Conservatives’ Short-Term Memory Problem»

How did Bill Frist commemorate the one-week anniversary of the London terrorist attacks? By cutting transit security funds.

On the way to passing a $31.8-billion Homeland Security spending bill Thursday, Senate Republican leaders beat back a series of attempts — pressed by senators from states with large urban centers — to increase money for mass transit protection by as much as $1.4 billion. …

In the Senate’s spending bill, rail and transit safety measures were allotted $100 million, a drop of $50 million from last year.

One week.

And the Senate did the very same thing after last year’s metro attacks in Madrid, blocking two bills to beef up transit security. Keep in mind that a recent study by the American Public Transportation Association estimated that rail systems need some $6 billion for security improvements. This year’s amount, $100 million, is about eight hours of typical spending in Iraq. It’s just beyond belief.

What? You thought they were serious about being opposed to terror? It keeps the sheeple in line.

  2. Krazny Says:

Senator Patty Murray in Washington state, (my home state) has been fighting since 9/11 for more funds to help defend and protect the ports in Puget Sound with almost no help from the republicans.

Makes you wonder who is soft on defense?

  3. John S. Says:

We all can see very plainly (based on the facts) who is soft on terror and who is not.

Unfortunately, Democrats have been unable to get this point across over the cacophony of Republican rhetoric.

That is - and always has been - their biggest problem.

  4. Susan Says:

The state of Illinois and the city of Chicago went ahead and spent state dollars on homeland security and continue to wait for the promised federal funds to replace them.

We the People of Illinois believe that BushCo is trying to bankrupt our state because we are Blue.

We had a balanced budget until we spent money on Homeland Security. Now we are in the hole, just like BushCo planned it.

This is one of the many reasons my Republican County is turning Blue.

  5. cynical ex-hippie Says:

Talk about soft on defense. The London terrorists came from Pakistan. The same Pakistan where Bush refused to chase bin Laden. The same Pakistan we’ve been screaming about when the Yellowphants talk about how we’ve pacified Iraq.

  6. Krazny Says:

Wonder where steed and fake are? There being awfully quite about this thread.

  7. Say What? Says:

Actually, ce-h, the London bombers were born and bred Englishmen of Pakistani descent. Which makes what they did all the more bizarre.

  8. cynical ex-hippie Says:

The all went to Pakistan to receive training. The operation looks like it was orchestrated from Pakistan. Terrorist training camps are operating in Pakistan. Bush should have known this. He should know it now.

  9. Jim Says:

“We all can see very plainly (based on the facts) who is soft on terror and who is not.”

I certainly hope you’re referring to individuals on a… well, individual basis… and not on political boundries.

You see, I am from New Jersey, where are ex-Democrat-Govenor, James McGreevey, hired his Gay lover from Israel as our top dog of NJ Homeland Security. So I would gather he would fit your idea of “soft”.

To sum it up…. Democrats and Republicans… same shit, different piles! Maybe Bama can bring some respect back to the political arena…. maybe.

  10. Jim Says:

“Talk about soft on defense. The London terrorists came from Pakistan.”

    “…Pakistani descent…”

I am a corn-fed white boy who grew up on a farm in Oregon. My wife is a rice-fed brown girl from Hyderabab, India (Southern). I was married in India and have been there since. Anyone who knows anything of India’s struggles will tell you flat out that Pakistan should be on the “Axis of Evil” list!

  11. Mikey Says:

The guys that were detained in California (reported a few weeks ago) were also said to have trained in Pakistan. The US is well aware of terrorist training camps in Pakistan.

  12. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

Susan - why don’t you ask your loser governor to fund more for homeland security instead of being constantly mired in ethical problems. STOP hating America!

  13. Darth Filibustrous Says:

    Dilemma -

Instead of attacking Susan’s governor, try defending Frist slashing money for rail and transit safety measures by 50%.

    Go. You’re on.

  14. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

There is such thing as state government - homeland security is not the end all be all Darth. AND it’s wonderful talking point to crow about, but welcome to Washington DC’s pork barrel. It’s bipartisan, you know.

  15. From da hood Says:

    STOP hating urban America, Northeast..

  16. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

I live in NYC - I know urban America. I pay city taxes. Trust me - there is money to be spent. We’re to busy spending them on liberal social engineering programs and unions. I love urban America, but they are not strapped for cash. AND if they are - who’s fault is that?

  17. Publius Says:

One of the biggest problems that the Senate has, is that around 16% of the US Population controls around half the seats in the Senate. Does that make sense? Or should we do Proportional Representation? I agree with Northeast Dilemma though, that if they don’t have the money, it’s their fault. But we should be looking for every way possible to protect our people while we also guarantee their liberty.

  18. kindness Says:

Hey Jim, do you think Osama is in the Pakistan tribal area? I do.

TND- I grew up in NY. You are no New Yorker. New York republicans are reasonable folk. My whold family is republican & still there. They despise what bush43 & co have done to the republican party. They actually like Hillary. They think she’s geen good for the state. So, put it where the sun don’t shine. We don’t care what you think.

  19. Susan Says:

Dilema its nice that you obsess with me but aren’t you getting a bit out of control?

Ask and you shall recieve? Ha! Ha!

That only works when Bushie asks YOU for a blow job.

(A little advice) Get checked out when your done, that thing has been in Rove’s ass many times.

  20. Susan Says:

Hey retarded fake New Yorker, (Dilemma)

If you had a brain and could comprehend simple sentences and had even a slight vocabulary you would know what the word “promised” means.

But why would my state Government expect BushCo to fullfill any promise he makes?

My bad for expecting basic comprehension skills from a freak of nature or to expect BushCo to fullfill a promise of federal funds.

Get a clue retard. If you were a real New Yorker you’d know that Bushie has NOT fullfilled his promise to New York either.

Your mentality proves you are from the deep, sweaty south where inbreeding is still prevelant today.

  21. cynical ex-hippie Says:

So now NED argues that the federal government should not be doing everything it can to fight terror and protect citizens?

    Interesting…

  22. Zookeeper Says:

I may be paranoid, but wouldn’t Georgie’s poll numbers rise, at least for some time, if there is another attack? By continuing to slash/underfund transit security we certainly are at risk in that area. Maybe the repugs are willing to take that risk…?

  23. Jim Says:

“There is such thing as state government - homeland security is not the end all be all Darth.”

Um, you are right… BUT that is the topic of this thread isn’t it?!

  24. John S. Says:

    Jim-

Our favorite conservative shills really don’t bother to readthe topic of these threads before they start posting in them. They usually just look to post trite and nasty comments about the posters and/or Democrats/liberals/non-conservatives.

There are relevant comments realted to the topic of the thread, and then there are comments the conservative shills make.

    Never the twain shall meet.

  25. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

Susan - I am a real NYer. I live right near your favorite spot - the UN. I just happen to think for myself, not the NY Times.

John S - you have a nice weekend. This conservative shill is tired of fighting with you left wingers. I must admit, it’s been real.

  26. RPin Says:

John S - you have a nice weekend. This conservative shill is tired of fighting with you left wingers. I must admit, it’s been real.

Given the nature of this site, any conservatives coming here would be indeed looking for a fight. The whole idea of the site is left wing based. If you were looking for a place where they would appreciate your ideas, may you look for a right activist blog (I have no idea if there are any) instead of posting arguments that are likely to develop in flame wars.

Maybe your opinions would be more welcome if this was a nonpartisan effort in debating politics rather than a left wing tool to spread their beliefs. Not that I’d think such effort is ever capable of becoming reality. From what I see so far, liberals and conservatives are both uncapable of respecting the ideals of the other.

  27. John S. Says:

    NED:

You have yourself a nice weekend too. I may think you’re a crackpot, but I’m not above extendin you a civil pleasantry.

    :)

  28. Susan Says:

Dont expect me to believe anything you post Dilemma, you’re a liar.

And when you speak of ethics in Illinois, go ahead and google George Ryan and Jack Ryan. Check out Alan Keyes, now there’s a freak you can relate to.

All are Republicans who have tried their best to destroy the intergity of Illinois and failed.

I hope you have a rotten (like your crotch) weekend and melt in your dirty ol trailer.

And remember to wash that mouth out of yours.

  29. Susan Says:

And lets not forget the honorable (lol) Henry Hyde.

    You’ll love his cheatin ways.

He won’t be running for another term now that his extra-marital affairs are public knowledge.
