President Reagan on Leakers

President Reagan on Leakers

For those who have tried so hard to downplay the importance of Valerie Plame’s outing; for those who say the leak wasn’t important because Plame worked at Langley; for those who say what Rove and Libby and others did wasn’t a blow to our intelligence services, we suggest you read President Ronald Reagan’s remarks at CIA headquarters upon signing the Intelligence Identities Protection Act (which the Plame leakers may have violated):

Whether you work in Langley or a faraway nation, whether your tasks are in operations or analysis sections, it is upon your intellect and integrity, your wit and intuition that the fate of freedom rests for millions of your countrymen and for many millions more all around the globe. …

Like those who are part of any silent service, your sacrifices are sometimes unappreciated; your work is sometimes misunderstood. Because you’re professionals, you understand and accept this. But because you’re human and because you deal daily in the dangers that confront this nation, you must sometimes question whether some of your countrymen appreciate the value of your accomplishments, the sacrifices you make, the dangers you confront, the importance of the warnings that you issue.

And that’s why I have come here today; first, to sign an important piece of legislation that bears directly on your work, an act of Congress whose overwhelming passage by the representatives of the American people is a symbol of their support for the job that you do every day. But even more than this, I’ve come here today to say to you what the vast majority of Americans would say if they had this opportunity to stand here before you. We’re grateful to you. We thank you. We’re proud of you.

    Touche.

IOKTLIYAR - It's OK To Leak If You Are a Republican

  2. Jay Says:

This reminds me of how good Reagan's speech writers were (Peggy Noonan included....yuck!) and how beautifully he could deliver the speech, the man above all else had a gift for bringing the written word to life (all actors do I suppose). Bush has excellent speech writers too, unfortunately for them the messenger is only semi-literate.

  3. Don Davis Says:

Now that the WH has leaked S. Ct. niminee Roberts will DUHbya lie abour firing somebody else?

  4. Marblex Says:

    Lip service.

  5. Susan Says:

The speech highlighted here by Reagan is why most Republicans are demanding that the Plame leaker be held accountable.

It's their only choice if they don't want to be called hypocrits.

  6. Susan Says:

Hey, were are all the wingnuts? Guess Reagan got em this time!

    Good job ol dead guy.

  7. The Oracle Says:

Bush, Cheney, Rove and the rest of the neo-con gang in the White House for the past five years have CORRUPTED our intelligence agencies with their extreme right-wing hackery and quackery.

    Just wonderin'....

As our military has had difficulty in recruiting warm bodies to fight Bush's War in Iraq, are our intelligence agencies also having difficulty recruiting new covert intelligence agents, especially after Valerie Plame's CIA cover was blown by the neo-cons?

  8. palamedes Says:

Can anyone tell me if this speech is on tape, and from where it might be accessed?

  9. Michael Says:

You KNOW things are bad when you start reflecting on how good Reagan was...I do it, too...

Funny; my work place is full of Republicans and yesterday I ask those loyal Repubs (with are all of fighting age) what they thought of the facts that the military is having a hard time finding warm bodies for their war. A couple stated that it was all just a liberal plot to undermine their war efforts.

Others stated that the draft should be enacted once again!

I then stated, but you all are of fighting age, why wouldn't you (if you really believe in you President's war) sign up and show your support. After all you say your war is justified.

To a person, they all said no. Again, some stated the draft would be the right way to go about it.

But then as an after thought; they all did the math just to make sure that they were too old to be drafted before saying they concurred.

After thought; it seems it isn’t that funny after all!

After the attack on Peal Harbor; Thousands of loyal Americans join the United States military to show support for that administration and go off to fight and die for what they believed in. But here after the attack on the United States not even so call loyal Republicans of fighting age are willing to sign up to help our brave Soldiers fight a battle in which they themselves helped bring about.

They say they back their Prez, but words without actions are just empty words.

Seems they really don’t support their President after all!
