What Do They Know That We Don’t?

Considering that so many of John Roberts’s positions remain unknown (or at least unclear), the Conservative support behind him seems remarkably consistent. Without going into details, Weekly Standard Editor William Kristol “unreservedly” praises the Roberts pick:

He’ll be a little more incremental, a little more cautious, than some of us rabid constitutionalists will sometimes like. But he is a conservative pick, and a quality pick–and, to my surprise, a non-PC, non-quota pick.

Larry Kudlow of the National Review followed suit, lauding Roberts’s record on economic issues:

Let it also be said that President Bush was true to his word. He nominated a conservative based solely on the judicial merits, a church-going Catholic father of two children who is a truly distinguished lawyer and jurist.

Manuel Miranda, writing for the Wall Street Journal, goes beyond Kudlow and Crystal, praising Roberts as a judge in the mold of Scalia or Thomas.

Last night George Bush kept his campaign promise that he would name a justice in the mold of Antonin Scalia or Clarence Thomas In John Roberts, the president got what he wanted, and we conservatives did too.

These might be honest sentiments. But there is surprisingly little worrying among the Right about abortion, and whether or not Roberts will prove his Conservative credentials on the big social issues. Do Conservatives know something we don’t? Or could it be that, after a day of rumors swirling around Edith Jones Clement, John Roberts simply looked so good in contrast that Conservatives could not help but fall in love?

Well, Roberts is not without a detractor. The loudest (and loneliest) dissenting voice was that of Ann Coulter:

So all we know about him for sure is that he can’t dance and he probably doesn’t know who Jay-Z is. Other than that, he is a blank slate. Tabula rasa. Big zippo. Nada. Oh, yeah … We also know he’s argued cases before the Supreme Court. Big deal; so has Larry Flynt’s attorney.

But unfortunately, other than that that, we don’t know much about John Roberts. Stealth nominees have never turned out to be a pleasant surprise for conservatives. Never. Not ever.

But does Coulter have a point, or does she just need someone to hate?
(Or both?)

Without a lot of hard facts, I am inclined to wait on determining what I think if him.

  2. Lyle says:

Ann Coulter doesn’t like him. And some other conservatives have suggested he could be another Souter, so I don’t think it is enlightened to say that Republican support is “consistent”. There is some risk involved with him.

The guy is just a stud jurist and I think will serve America well no matter where he comes down on the judicial political spectrum.

  3. Robert says:

It’s William Kristol – Spell checker gone wild!

  4. LWordLover says:

I can’t stomach coulter and her holier than thou bullshit. Or is it ingrham I can’t stand. Just think the right will be very disappointed by this pick in the long run.

  5. Admin says:

Thank you for the correction Robert.

I see that he’s a through and through conservative. I’m not so fearful of that but it’s what KIND of conservative that has me thinking.

Is he a conservative that would have taken Michael Schavio’s wife & given custody to Jeb Bush (via the State of Florida)?
Apparently his wife’s FFL group was active in trying to stop them from pulling the plug on her.

Is he a conservative that will allow an adult to practice birth control?

Is he a conservative which would stop a runaway government from stepping outside it’s legal capabilities? (ie – how would he choose to see the prisoners being held in Guantanamo Bay or the recent emminent domain case in CT).

Hopefully, he will be asked these questions. But really, if he chose not to answer them, it looks like a majority of Senators (including many Democrats) are already on board.

Conservatives (Sandra D) scare me alot less than activists (Scalia).

  7. Marblex says:

Can you say, “prison camps?” That’s why Roberts got the nod.

He approved Chimpy’s “military” tribunals (read kangaroo court.) Now the Preznit has the unfettered discretion to imprison ANYONE ON EARTH on his WHIM, INDEFINITELY WITHOUT ACCESS TO COUNSEL and where your only access to any opportunity to “clear” yourself is a military trial where you are not entitled to the presumption of innocence, you don’t get to see all the evidence against you and the fact that you’re allowed to mount any sort of defense at all passes as “justice.”

    THE COUP IS COMPLETE.

  8. Lyle says:

the “coup” is complete? that’s absurd. ah, the immature thoughts of the hard left. coup d’etats don’t happen quietly or peacefully, they happen violently. Bush was elected by the American people.

it’s been reported in the Washington Post that Roberts has never been a member of the Federalist Society.

  9. Ryan Neat says:

    Lyle,

A ‘rigged’ election is still a coup… Get a clue!

  10. The Northeast Dilemma says:

#7 – I hope liberals run on what you speak of. Most Americans are not interested in civil rights for terrorists especially in light of what is going on in London. Most would call that terrorist sympathizing – it will be an excellent talking point if the left runs on it.

I like Roberts, supect that he’s conservative, but have some doubts. Gore’s 2000 campaign lawyer – David Bois – said he supsects Roberts will be most like Stephen Breyer. That would be awful. As for Ann Coulter and the moonbat right – they are just making sure Bush doesn’t go soft in case the Chief steps down this summer.

I hope this guy Brad is right.

  12. Sharon Cox says:

This Mr. Roberts is just getting his just rewards from Bush. Helping to take the 2000 election, swing as far right as possible and be vague and under the publics radar, look good, be smart and appear to have no flaws is all one needs. In the present right wing domination there is no winners for the people. Moderates are sitting on the fence and not wanted by this bunch. Those of us on the left can scream all we want. Untill the public wake up to all the corruption, distruction and lies we just wait and write. March anyone.?

  13. boing says:

NED doesn’t realize due to ideological hysterical blindness that Americans are tired of being strip searched to get on a plane, tired of being jerked around by fake terror alerts that only serve the GOP, sick of having their most cynical musings about the workings of the US government and our democracy confirmed by the daily misdeeds of the Bush administration and its GOP governors, and the sickening stench of moral corruption from the right.
Remember when GHW Bush quit the NRA because ofWayne La Pierre’s comments about jack booted government thugs? People still don’t want jack booted government thugs horning in on our business, even if they have GOP patches on their uniforms.

  14. Susan says:

Roberts simply is not qualified for the job. What gives a guy with very little experience as a judge the right to this job?

This is the Supreme Court we’re talking about. He doesn’t deserve it and hasn’t earned it.

    Bottom line.

  15. Lyle says:

    Susan,

Even Justice O’Connor thinks this guy is a fantastic nominee for the Supreme Court. He’s been hailed as the greatest Supreme Court advocate of his generation. Seems like that would make him a pretty good candidate.

Furthermore, men who weren’t not judges for very long or ever have been appointed to the Supreme Court.

  16. kjlovell says:

Ann Coulter…. Ah yes, I remember her she’s the “Cum-runner” for Tripp and Monica.

I guess she doesn’t like him because he won’t sing her praises and jump on her.

As far as Roberts, his past involvement with scandal paired with monkey-boy’s endorsement is all I need to say he probably is dangerous.

  17. chirles whitmore says:

I am so outraged by the wusses on C-Span and the absence of any attempt to FORCE the White House to TURN OVER all DOCUMENTS from/to/work product of JOHN ROBERTS during his work for BUSH I !!
Don’t the people have the right of subpoena anymore? Is the Bush family in CHARGE of EVERYTHING? I’m really incensed!!! Everybody in the U.S. is limp! Nobody seems to give even a rat’s ass about the effects of no one acting in a strong, decisive manner. I’m not afraid of the administration!!! Just give me the SUBPOENA, and watch a truly sad and miserable CITIZEN of what is turning into the WORST excuse for a DEMOCRACY in the WORLD!
They expound on C-Span about the “record”, and almost shrug their shoulders before acknowledging that the decision made about Mr. WHITE BREAD will have to be made with the papers that HAVE been turned over! WHY??? PLEASE, I need to be a good wife for my husband, who is ailing…I am so obsessed with the Media, Cable News, and now Liberal Pundits, because all of them don’t have the vision or accept the need to be brave and powerful and COMMITTED to saving our Republic!

PLEASE, what is the reason for this cojone-less
group we now call PROGRESSIVES not making any progress? DOesn’t anybody care enough to make a super-stink about Bush’s having gotten away with murder, lying, war-profiteering, hiding his own gubernatorial records by stashing them in Poppy’s Library, stealing two elections, stealing the Southern Ohio Congressional election of a super-qualified Iraq vet-still in one piece-a lawyer, a guy who speaks articulately, a guy with balls, and what happens? The biggest radio station in the area goes black 30 minutes before the winner is announced. And what did we do about that?

It’s all the same pattern, but this time I CAN’T TAKE THIS ANYMORE, I AM MAD AS HELL, AND I DO WANT EVERYBODY TO OPEN THEIR WINDOWS AND SCREAM IT OUT!
Please find a Con-lawyer to answer why we can’t hold up the hearing for ROBerts until we have the records, I’m begging you!
