Eduardo Penalver tackles the strategic implications of Roberts’ nomination. Risa Goluboff delves into Justice O’Connor’s statement on her likely replacement. And Tim Wu argues that the “most astonishing thing about Roberts is not his Harvard-heavy resume, his judicial record, nor even his John Edwards-hairdo. It’s how little he has said about anything.” Enjoy.
That is why bushco showed more smarts than usual for this appt.
They like:
1) big time conservative
2) no messy paper trail
3) look how young he is. He’ll be there 30+ years
I think we should ask thorough and probing questions of the guy in his Senate hearings, but I don’t think we can stop this one. Gotta give dumbo more credit than I like giving him. Damn!
July 22nd, 2005 at 2:52 pmWait – there’s more! Roberts is widely considered to be the most talented constitutional lawyer of his generation. In addition, he understands Article II (the Hamdan case), and its interplay with Articles I and III, better than any sitting member of the Court. He respects the legislative process, which means he believes you and I have a right, through our elected representatives, to enact laws that address our needs and concerns (the Acree case). In fact, he believes we retain that right even if, in hindsight, our laws turn out to be bad ones (the Hedgepeth case). So he is a pretty darn good pick, if you ask me.
July 22nd, 2005 at 3:27 pmHe simply doesn’t deserve the job. Hiring Roberts is like hiring a mechanic to do the job of a mechanical engineer. Big difference. He needs to put his time in like everyone else.
July 22nd, 2005 at 10:34 pmhe may or may not deserve to be nominated based on his time served, but he has been nominated. he’s most certainly not a right-wing nut going by his records. he seems very rational and not inclined to rock the boat.
July 23rd, 2005 at 9:53 pmSusan,
Sweetie. Men who have never been judges before or for briefer periods of time than Roberts, have been appointed to the Supreme Court.
Your just a woman who is against anything the Bush administration does. You don’t even realize this guy is the kind of person who should be on the Court, not some partisan hack.
July 24th, 2005 at 5:10 amI’d love to hear a reason to keep this appointment from moving forward, but so far my reaction is, it could have been MUCH worse. In fact its surprising Bush even put Roberts forward – there MUST be something wrong with him.
