Bob Novak Lies Again

Bob Novak Lies Again

Here’s what Bob Novak just told Candy Crowley on CNN:

NOVAK: “I can’t — I can’t tell anything I ever talked to Karl Rove about, because I don’t even think I talked to him about anything, even the time of day, on the record.” [CNN, Inside Politics, 7/26/05]

Oh really?

Bob Novak op-ed, The New York Post, May 3, 1999

“According to Iowa sources, Rove asked for cancellation of this year’s vote. Iowa Republican Chairman Kayne Robinson declined, though voting this time will be limited to Iowans. Rove, however, told me he definitely made no cancellation request and merely joked about busing in Texans.”

Bob Novak op-ed, The New York Post, June 18, 1999

“Bush campaign manager Karl Rove told me his candidate wants ‘judges that share his philosophy, and this (the ‘96 platform language) is his philosophy.’”

Candy won’t care, she’s got a buffet to hit.

  2. truth4achange says:

Yes indeed, among the increasing circle of folks who seem to be caught up in this mess, not nearly enough attention has focused on Novak, a hack with no remaining shred of journalistic integrity and shameless shill for the GOP.

  3. JFG says:

Very good. You get a passing grade in “Search Engine 101.” Now, kindly (1) provide the comment or question to which Novak was responding, and (2) explain why anyone should care, one way or the other.

You fever swamp lefties must think everything is a conspiracy. I can’t think of any other reason to go down this rabbit hole.

  4. progressive and proud says:

Circle, Trolls, circle. Your insecurity is starting to bubble up. I notice there are a lot of trolls here lately…hmmmmm.

  5. HUAC says:

You fever swamp lefties must think everything is a conspiracy.

Already they are calling Fitzgerald a lefty? Who is going through the looking glass and going down rabbit holes?

  6. Clandy Stein says:

No JFG, we do not think everything is a conspiracy. We do know the Bush administration CONSPIRES to hide truths from the American people, who are, by law, their employers.

Since you also rail against ANY investigation of this administration, you must be afraid of what those investigations may reveal. Now if Bush and Company had nothing to fear, and if you truly believed this, then you would support these investigations, especially when so many factual discrepencies emerge daily from Bush administration mouths. If you are not afraid, JFG, then you should support an investigation that you believe will turn up nothing and exonerate your overlords, because not only would it clear your idols, it would put egg on liberal faces, and isn’t belittling liberals and democrats your raison d’etre?

You have only one real reason to contest investigations and that has to do with cost. But where did you stand when Ken Starr spent millions to discover that Clinton had an affair with an intern? My guarantee is that you were all for spending that money, a cheerleader for taking down a president elected by far larger majorities than Bush, a man who had far higher approval ratings AFTER his baseless impeachment than George Bush does now.

Face it, Bub, you’re a petulant, sycophantic hypocrite. When questions arise about real issues of national importance, like national security and our fight against terror, you suddenly puff and bloat in moral outrage. You’re no American, JFG. You’re a minion, loyal to your party first and your nation a far second. That makes you the most foul kind of “patriot,” which is to say you are no patriot at all.

  7. Clandy Stein says:

Oh, and JFG, Mr. Iraq war supporter, unless you’re writing from a bunker you are also a coward who talks through both sides of his mouth.

  8. Robert says:

Picture of one of those “off the record” meetings…

  9. Ben says:

Wasn’t Rove fired from Bush #41’s campaign for leaking to Novak?

  10. HUAC says:

  11. HUAC says:

I do believe he was, Ben.

  12. Brian says:

I wonder how many CIA employees think about Novak at night, wondering what he’s doing, where he’s going…

  13. Karl Rove says:

I don’t know, I kind of like this JFG fella.

  14. Karl Rove says:

I even told my good friend Bob all about him.

  15. Karl Rove says:

And I was NOT fired. I took a leave of absence for personal reasons.

  16. The Janitors, American Federalist Urinal says:

Karl, we will always have a place for you here. We can always use more “attendants” in the Mens Room.

  17. Ryan Neat says:

Novak is a compulsive liar. He lies about his own lies and contradicts himself more times than I care to measure.

He’s a classic propagandist enabler. He must suffer from dementia, because it’s clear he’s not a sane person…

  18. Ryan Neat says:

    Ben,

Yes Rove was in fact fired from BushI’s campaign because he leaked information to Novak against the direct ‘orders’ of the bush campaign headquarters. Both Rove and Novak are part of the right wing NeoCon/NeoFascist machine. They’re both children of the Leo Strauss school of propaganda (lies are considered critical and necessary tools in this technique), and only idiots or fellow propagandists don’t realize this.

These guys, their origins and even their techniques are well known, and the teachings of Leo Strauss are a matter of ‘public’ record.

I suggest the right wing sycophants on this site read this book.

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0300104367/002-9966106-1483256?v=glance

If they aren’t aware that they’re fascists before reading this book – hopefully it will shed some lights on the fact that they’ve become (or support) demented fools in pursuit of their own greed and fear..

  19. Maira Largo says:

We know Karl is guilty. Bush knows the turd is guilty and the White House is whipping up a new batch of scrambled eggs. Meanwhile, a Supreme Coury justice is to be named; hatred of America is growing; Haliburton is making millions; blatant corruption like Tom DeLay and Christopher Cox are expanding their political in Congress; the Patriot Act is bloated with infringment on our civil liberties; labor unions are shrinking under Republican lobbyists; Bush is vacationing for a month; John Bolton could sneak into the UN while Congress is in recess for a month, and the body count in Iraq is growing. Anyone protecting the malfeseance of the Bush administration is tainted in blood.

  20. Clandy Stein says:

Go father, Maira. Anyone supporting the robber barons in power is accomplice to the crime of treason, because at the root of every single move by the neocons is the lust for more money. How they get it, through lies, intimidation, feeding terrorism and the sacrifice of our soldiers is unimportant. They will kill to get what they want, which sadly is everything.

  21. Marie says:

    Clandy Stein,
Regarding your comments today – I couldn’t have said it better! Right on target.

  22. Marie says:

Novak is a cowardly weasel. He apparently values his own behind over the national security. He has aided and abetted a White House crime. Of course, all the Bush bootlickers will cry foul! Nothing has been proven yet, but it ain’t over yet. Watch out for the Republican machine to begin an attack on Fitzgerald. Pat Roberts is looking into the leak investigation — except he is looking into Fitzgerald’s investigation! Fitzgerald’s term is up in the fall, about the time that the grand jury is finished. Will he be fired? Will be he replaced before then? The Bushies will have to get rid of him in a way that will fool most of the general public — not a difficult task — but one they will.

  23. Susan says:

I’m pretty sure Novak will do some time over this. Changing his recollection=perjury… Perjury is a serious offense.

  24. Steed Lankershim says:

There must be a lack of real evidence lately because this has descended into keyboard rage and name calling from the lilly-white left. The conspiracy theories are entertaining here at thinkparanoid.org. By the way, what’s the crime? Has that been announced yet? And can someone address the story about the Russian’s foiling Plames CIA activities in the late nineties?

  25. melior says:

By the way, what’s the crime?

That’s for Fitzgerald to know, and you to find out, to paraphrase Rehnquist. Meanwhile we get to laugh as you twist the sheets in flop-sweat panic knowing that the whole house of cards is about to come down on your beloved BushCheney.

    Enjoy!

  26. Nixon's Ghost says:

And can someone address the story about the Russian’s foiling Plames CIA activities in the late nineties?

Bush looked into Putin’s soul. Who knew Godless communists had souls? Anyway, all was forgiven, and Bush used his Texas Jedi mind tricks to make the Russians forget. Yoda is a Marxist troll.

  27. jerry says:

I’m more interested in whether the child-gods in the West Wing got someone killed with their leak games.

Mrs Rove/Novak, did anyone die as a result of your conversations regarding Ms. Plame?

  28. Nixon's Ghost says:

Oh, Jesus! I think Cankersore is referring to this Moonie drivel in the Washington Times! Get that treated! It might be herpes! It’s contagious!

    http://mediamatters.org/items/200507260005

  29. Ryan Neat says:

    Steed,

One of the crimes is outing a CIA agent, the investigation is merely determining who’s guilty of it. The other crimes that are likely to also receive indictments are obstruction of justice, perjury and possibly even treason if the statute is applied to its logical conclusion.

Pay attention and don’t be so stupid, it gets tiresome repeating the law to idiots like you that don’t pay attention…

  30. Mr. Evil says:

These are the very same political hacks that toiled tirelessly trying to destroy President Clinton. Even while he was embroiled in that pressure cooker he managed to balance the budget and produce a surplus, create over 22 million jobs for Americans from the time he took office and for you super right-wing religious screamers, abortions declined 17% during his tenure as president.
Now tell me, what in the hell tangible benefits has President Bush brought to the American people during his tenure in office that can compare to just those 3 accomplishments?
Oh… I’m sorry, I’m criticizing him. I must be a liberal, America hating, tree hugger wacko. Nah, not really. I just have this problem with preferring truth over lies, results over failures, vision over shortsightedness. Most importantly, changing the rules to suit you as you go is just plain childish.
Republicans hate America, the constitution and especially the bill of rights.

  31. EconAtheist says:

LOL @ the neo-trolls… how pathetic.

  32. Nixon's Ghost says:

I agree with you completely, Mr. Evil, with one exception. Most of them aren’t real Republicans or even conservatives in the classical sense. Eisenhower was a Republican. They would call him a liberal today. In fact, I have heard some of them do that, and that puts them in the same ballpark with the John Birch Society. They thought Eisenhower was a commie.

  33. Ryan Neat says:

    To a fascist, everyone is a commie…

  34. RBC says:

Now wait a minute, let’s define sycophant: a servile, fawning paracite. You know, I think that’s about right. I just wonder how they sleep at night. Knowing your partner to an intentional outing of one of our most dedicated service persons, in one of the most critical fields, wow. Yes, to describe Novak, the ‘belt-way-girls and other apologists as ‘fawning parasites’ is grossly understated. How ‘do’ they sleep?

  35. RBC says:

Just keep them in the definition. Look how Mr. Evil feels, defensive (although I do agree with your points). Screw that. Facts don’t affect these people. They’re “servile, fawning parasites,” sold out rats of our nation, and a disease to the minds of our people. Go C.I.A.!!! Thank you for not letting that **it ride.

  36. Mr. Evil says:

NeoCons would have been the proper term, but I haven’t heard much if anything from republicans denouncing the lies, the favoritism, the systematic destruction of our civil rights, etc. So that’s why I generalized “republicans”.
I will give credit where credit is due. Larry Johnson, a former CIA case officer (officially under cover while in that capacity) and to this day a registered republican, wonders when any republican in congress will have the backbone to stand up to Karl Rove and Scooter Libby for their tit-for-tat actions against Valerie Plame and also to hold President Bush to his word.
I refuse to believe that any CIA officer is “fair game” as Rove put it. I may not agree with everything the CIA does or has to do, but I appreciate the nature in which they have to accomplish objectives. But any half-wit could figure out that if everyone knows who you are and where you work obtaining valuable information would be next to impossible. In all reality they would probably end up dead.
Karl Rove and Scooter Libby and all the other neocons in this administration are playing a dangerous game with complete and total disregard for the ramifications.

  37. Steed Lankershim says:

    Here it is on factcheck.
June 1997 – Joseph Wilson returns to Washington DC as Senior Director for African Affairs at the National Security Council. At about the same time, Plame also moves back to the United States (Wilson, Politics 240), in part because the CIA suspects her name was leaked to the Russians in 1994.

Just wondering how this fits into the picture.

  38. dano347 says:

Just wondering how this fits into the picture.

    Comment by Steed Lankershim

Can you actually show that it means ANYTHING? Throwing crap again? You guys are REALLY getting worried aren’t ya’?

Please explain what this has to do with Karl Rove’s actions in outing a CIA operative in time of war.

  39. Albert says:

I have seen mention of Rove getting fired from Bush I’s campaign for leaking to Novak several times here. There is a good summary at Wikipedia:

“In 1992, Rove was fired from George H. W. Bush’s 1992 presidential re-election campaign for allegedly leaking information to journalist Robert Novak. State campaign manager Robert Mosbacher had allotted Rove only one-quarter of the campaign’s $1 million direct mail contract, after Rove had the entire contract in 1988. As Novak wrote, “Also attending the session was political consultant Karl Rove, who had been shoved aside by Mosbacher”. Novak’s column described the firing of Mosbacher by former Senator Phil Gramm.

Novak and Rove deny that Rove was the leaker. Mosbacher maintains that “Rove is the only one with a motive to leak this. We let him go. I still believe he did it.”

(Sources: “Karl and Bob: a leaky history,” Houston Chronicle, Nov. 7, 2003, ; “Genius,” Texas Monthly, March 2003, p. 82; “Why Are These Men Laughing,” Esquire, January 2003)”

Look, this guys nothing more than a lying, venal little douchbag. he long ago sold his soul and his credibility for thirty pieces of silver. my only hope is that i get to heaven, and there’s a little porthole i can look through to watch all these sob’s slow roast on a spit.

  41. Plantagenet says:

Why the surprise that Novak lied? I’d be surprised if a repuke were to intentionally tell the truth. They’re all so fucking despicable the only from of communication they understand is lying. That’s the difference between an honest American and a republican.

  42. emald says:

The current lying administration, illeagally put in office, are the worst sedionists possible. They preach a strong loyalty but act out a treasonous reality. These idiots have destroyed the United States and won’t quit untill they have turned it into an ugly caricture of itself. People like Novak are their enablers casting lies as truth.
All this administration, and those who support them, are traitors to our country. People who seek to avoid paying their dues (taxes) are seditionists. We have indeed become the great babylon. Pity, we could have been so much more.

  43. Jeff says:

Isn’t it wonderful to see the trolls spin the Rove/Novak story; too bad it had to be at the exspense of a CIA operative.

  44. Ryan Neat says:

    Rove,

How baseless your lies are. First of all the revelations around the Corn article are all myth and lies and were dispelled by Corn as well as the ‘written’ texts from Corn – I suggest you review davidcorn.com to get your propaganda story straight.

Second of all Wilson was in fact proven CORRECT on the Niger case, not false – so that’s yet another propaganda lie you’ve made.

Third of all how would the ‘friend’ of wilson not saying anything to wilson be him giving up the identity of plame? You make a ridiculous jump in logic that a baboon wouldn’t be stupid enough to make?

Are all right wingers this stupid? They appear to be from the level of crap that they post on this site. I suggest you go review some great works from the Greek Philosophers on ‘debate’ and stay away from Leo Strauss and the other Nazi Fascists who CONservatives seem to idolize these days…

  45. morris1030 says:

ODDLY, AND NOT ODDLY…MANY OF THE EXTREME RIGHT WING NEOCONS WERE EXTREME LEFTISTS……TROTSKYITES. THE POLICY MAKERS AND SO CALLED INTELLECTUALS OF THE RIGHT ARE EXTREMELY PRO ISRAEL, DISSILUSIONED LEFTISTS WHO HAVE TAKEN THE RIGID FERVOR OF THE LEFT AND HAVE TRANSPOSED AND MORPHED THEIR FANATIC IDEALS INTO THE POLITICAL/WORLD MESS THEY HAVE CREATED. THIS IS BUT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN. lEFT/RIGHT EXTREMISM COUPLED WITH SMUGSURE RIGHTEOUS FERVOR, AND RUTHLESS BEHAVIOR. THE END JUSTIFIES THE MEANS.

  46. Karl Rove says:

Jeff (#45): If that is your best shot you need to go back to the kiddie room. Grade: D+ (poor logic; spelling errors; below average social skills)

Ryan (346): As yto your three points:

First, if you compare the Corn article with any other article, including Novak’s, Corn was the very first journalist to describe Valerie Plame as “an undercover CIA officer.” Novak merely described her as “an Agency operative on weapons of mass destruction.” So your beef is with Corn, not Novak.

Second, you obviously have not read the Senate Intelligence report, or the British report in which the Blair government stands by its original intelligence. You are also ignoring Wilson’s bogus claim to have seen a “forged document” that was unavailable to him at the time of the Niger mission.

Third, you misread the last sentence of my third paragraph.

Grade: C- (poor reading comprehension; shallow analysis of facts)

morris1030 (#47): Pssst, hey buddy, your caplock button is stuck! Grade: F (ineffective self-expression; mired in 1960’s Marxist-Leninist anti-Semitism)

  47. RS Janes says:

In the 30 years I’ve been reading Bush Bagboy Bob Novak I don’t think I’ve caught him in a truth yet. Every item he writes is tightened around the spindle of far-right ideology until it uncoils like a venomous snake, and the Plame case won’t be the first time Novak has been used by the wingnuts as a rubber hose to beat up an opponent.

But the jig may be up for Mr. Moneybag-Eyes; rumor is he made only a limited deal with Fitzgerald to keep his wrinkled hindquarters out of the hoosegow; he may be liable for perjury and — be still my heart — charges under the Espionage Act which, allegedly, aren’t covered in his bargain with the prosecutor. After all, he was party to a treasonous act in time of war. (Even though we are not in a war declared by Congress, it’s generally accepted that, as during Vietnam, these laws can be invoked under certain circumstances.)

It’s possible Karl Rove and Novak may be sharing a cell yet; if they do, my guess is Karl will get the ‘top bunk,’ in the Jeff Gannon sense; Bob probably won’t notice the difference: after all, he’s been bending over for sleazy neocons for decades anyway.

  48. Karl Rove says:

Hey RSJ (#49): I suppose there’s a slim chance that somewhere over the left end of the rainbow dreams like yours might come true. So go ahead, close your eyes, click your heels three times, and say “There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home . . .” That’s about your only option at this point, because we keep winning elections!

  49. SergeiRostov says:

“First, if you compare the Corn article with any other article, including Novak’s, Corn was the very first journalist to describe Valerie Plame as “an undercover CIA officer.â€? Novak merely described her as “an Agency operative on weapons of mass destruction.â€? So your beef is with Corn, not Novak.”

Sorry, no. It’s been the practice for over thirty years among both journalists and authors to refer to the CIA as the “Agency”; in fact, this usage is even the norm among the general populace, and has been for some time.

“you obviously have not read the Senate Intelligence report”

The SIC report in its Conclusion 13 says states that Wilson’s report “did not change any minds”. In other words, the INR analysts who already agreed with Wilson believed even more strongly that the yellowcake story was bogus. As for those who didn’t, how could his report of a lack of evidence reinforce their conclusions? So your comment makes no sense.

“or the British report in which the Blair government stands by its original intelligence.”

    From factcheck.org http://www.factcheck.org/article222.html

“…The Butler report’s conclusion that British intelligence was “credible” clearly doesn’t square with what US intelligence now believes….”

“You are also ignoring Wilson’s bogus claim to have seen a “forged documentâ€? that was unavailable to him at the time of the Niger mission.”

Wilson never claimed to have seen the document at
the time of the mission. His claim (NYT Op-ed 7/6/03) was that he found no evidence of the sale (which is true); he does not mention the document at all. He did say at a later time that he saw the document, but that he saw it well after his mission to Niger.

    SAR

  50. Gotham Image says:

Judge Tatel’s recent opinion is what will carry the day, Karl.

  51. Karl Rove says:

SAR: You have made my point. Actually you have made several of them.

First, the distinction between the Novak and Corn articles consists not in the words they used to refer to the CIA/Agency, but rather in the words used to describe Valerie Plame’s employment status there. When Novak called her “an Agency operative on weapons of mass destruction,” he made no reference to her operational significance, whether covert or not. Corn, on the other hand, called her “an undercover CIA officer” – explicitly stating that she was a covert agent. Corn was thus the fist person to publicly describe Valerie Plame as a covert agent – and he did so on the basis of his interview with “Mr. Plame,” Joe Wilson himself!

Second, as you point out, the Senate Intelligence report concluded that (1) the British continued to stand by their original intelligence on Saddam’s “yellow-cake” purchase efforts (as they do to this day), and (2) whatever info Joe Wilson brought back from Niger failed to change any minds at the CIA about those efforst. Thus, Joe Wilson’s public claim to have “debunked” this intelligence is false.

Third, as you point out, Wilson also claimed to have seen the so-called “forged document” – the only problem being that the document was not available to him when he claims to have seen it.

The double standard here is obvious. The left treats a lying egomaniac like Joe Wilson as a hero, but calls George Bush a liar – and worse – because he relied on faulty intelligence that nevertheless represented an international consensus on Saddam’s current and future weapons capabilities. Until the left proves itself capable of intellectual honesty in these and other national security matters, the voters will never trust them with political power.

  52. citizenx says:

    A reptilican speaking of intellectual honesty-now that’s laughable.My father was a true republican,rove-
and you have made a mockery of what I was raised to believe the republican party stood for.At the very least you are guilty of exploiting the tragedy of 911 for political purposes, which is to be expected from the likes of you lot,at the worst one can assume that
you perpetrated the tragedy to impose your draconian
will upon an unsuspecting public, purely for the benefit of your corporate masters. There are no words to describe the depth of your treachery should the latter turn out to be true. One has to wonder what spawned the intense hatred you have for the common man
or anyone that dares to disagree with you-you guys claim to be God-fearing christians but are utterly incapable of practising the basic tenents of christianity.Have you ever earned an honest days pay?
Have you ever physically worked a day in your life?
Have you ever been a victim of circumstances beyond your control? Have you ever gone hungry because you had to pay rent before you could eat?Or have to get up at 3 am to drive 100 miles to work because that’s all you could get because the job you used to have was outsourced to benefit the companie’s bottom line?Or picture this rove-30 years of service to the company only to have your pension yanked because the present political climate allows the ceo’s to screw you? Imagine having to cancel retirement so your boss can enjoy a multi-million dollar bonus. Can you? Of course not. You cannot possibly fathom the burden that the working class must bear. And I’m not talking about America here-we’ve got it sweet compared to most of the world-I’m talking about an African who has to feed a family of six on a dollar a day if he’s lucky. Now your’re probably saying “What the hell are they having kids for if they can’t feed them?” Well in case you haven’t noticed,Africans don’t have social security-They have to hope that enough of their children survive to care for them in their old age-the more kids, the better the chances some will live.Put yourself in that position for a second if you can-and then look in the mirror and call yourself a good christian-I challenge you.

  53. Bob Novak says:

Just a suggestion: Someone may want to pay attention to the FACTS. See my July 31, 2005 article at http://www.HoustonChronicle.com.

And if it’s a full revelation your are seeking, be careful what you wish for. When this investigation is over, some people are going to wind up with egg on their faces.

  54. Silent Lucidity » Blog Archive » It Depends On What “on the record” Means? says:

[...] But the liberal Think Progress blog notes what it calls an outright lie right off the bat: Novak never talked to Rove on the record? Then how come he quoted Rove at least twice? [...]
