Rumsfeld Let the Dogs Out

If you were ever in need of stronger evidence linking Donald Rumsfeld to Abu Ghraib, look no further than yesterday’s court testimony provided by two Army dog handlers who stand accused of prisoner abuse at the detention center. At the hearing Maj. David DiNenna, the top military official at Abu Ghraib in 2003, testified that the former commander of Guantanamo Bay Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Miller came to Iraq to encourage new interrogation techniques.

As the Washington Post reports:

“We understood he was sent over by the secretary of defense,” DiNenna testified by telephone. DiNenna said Miller and his team were at Abu Ghraib “to take their interrogation techniques they used at Guantanamo Bay and incorporate them into Iraq.”

And when you remember that Rumsfeld approved the tactics at Guantanamo, the argument that he bears responsibility for the abuse at Abu Ghraib becomes more compelling. Just to review, we now know that:

1. Donald Rumsfeld approved the use of dogs for interrogations at Guantanamo.
2. Guantanamo commanders traveled to Abu Ghraib in 2003 and encouraged officers there to use dogs.
3. Officers at Abu Ghraib understood — and have now testified under oath — that the Guantanamo commanders’ visit was at the behest of Donald Rumsfeld.

And Rumsfeld persists in claiming that Abu Ghraib was the work of just a few bad apples. Huh… wonder why?

If Asked ,he’ll purse his lips put on his childish little lisp and fire back a condescending rhetorical question. There, Handled. The act is getting old.

  2. Brian says:

The new Iraq gov’t was formed in the middle of the night. The decision to pull out of Iraq was also in the middle of the night when Rummy said “no more nation building you messianic freak”

Rummy knows the additional footage of boys and girls being raped will soon hit the public.

  3. Zwack says:

Perhaps it’s because Rumsfeld genuinely believes that it was the owrk of just a few bad apples…

    Him, His boss, His colleagues…

Just in case any Trolls come along and demand proof or accuse me of irrationality or paranoia…

This is just speculation, is intended to be vaguely humorous, and I have no proof or evidence for any of this. It does however fit the facts, and I have no evidence that doesn’t support it.

Rumsfeld, Bush et.al. are war criminals:

Every week there is another story of Rumsfeld’s approval of deplorable tactics, and the liberal blogs report it and we all complain about it, but that’s where it stops. Until the press keeps these stories in the forefront and continuously reminds the public of the facts, these news items will never accomplish anything more than further infuriating some of us, and giving the perpetrators another mosquito to flick away. Stop them? Who is going to stop them? They can do whatever they want – and they are.

  6. Marie says:

    Don,
Sure Rummy is a war criminal but there is no one to bring charges much less prosecute. They can operate with impunity.

  7. Christopher says:

Rummy the Dummy is one sick mofo.

You just get the sense these neocon thugs get off on this type of abuse.

    A pox on his house.

Speaking of bad apples: Do you know why that phrase started? If you take a barrel of perfectly sound apples and add a single bad one, within just a few days you have a barrel about half full of bad apples. For some reason I am reminded of that terrible day in 2001, January 20th.

We have a shi*t load of bad apples…

  11. Don says:

    Marie,

You’re right. We can’t bring charges. Maybe someone smarter than me can devise a ‘people’s court’ where we can bring charges and prosecute these people for their war crimes, and at least maybe get some publicity and some airing of their wrongs. In the meantime these criminals control the agenda, the Congress, the PR, the media, the army, our money and too often even our children. About all we can do is educate ourselves and try to get the word out. See our website: http://www.warisaracket.org for more ideas.

I’m just reading a great book by Norman Solomon: WAR MADE EASY — How Presidents and Pundits Keep Spinning Us To Death. Solomon closes with a 1946 quote from Hermann Goering: “Why, of course, the PEOPLE don’t want war . . . But, after all, it is the LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship. . . [V]oice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.”

No no no no no…. You just don’t understand.
These things may be wrong or against the law for most people, but It’s OK If You’re A Republican…. Haven’t you learned anything the last five years?

  13. Marie says:

    Don,
I just bookmarked warisaracket.com so I can check it out regularly.
I enjoy reading comments from like-minded people who are smarter than I am. I suppose that is normal, but today, except for the blogs and Air America, there is no broadcast of my views.

Marie: I assume you know about Buzzflash.org, truthout, org, commondreams.org and antiwar.com, –and take a daily look at GISpecial at militaryproject.org. Also any book by Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn.

TonyC: Actually, while things are really bad right now, the Dems are no better. See, there was this little dust-up in Vietnam . . .

  15. cynical ex-hippie says:

Hmmmm… Dems/Vietnam, Reps/Iraq. Maybe it’s neither party, just the Texans.

    Fake,
Ever heard of intent? Ever heard or conscious action? Ever heard of free will? They don’t compare to neglect.
AND The ACLU does not fight for WHAT groups believe in .They fight for the freedom to believe what you want and provide a valuable balance to right wing facism even though some cases are distasteful.

  17. Marie says:

We will never see the additional footage of the abuses at Abu Grhraib and Guantanamo — the Pentagon has quashed all of them. These are the ones that even Rummy admitted were upsetting. Sy Hersch said they were explosive.
But Rummy, Gonzales and company NEVER sanctioned torture, right.
I dread the day when one of our own is captured. We could see that beheading is merciful in comparison.

“I suppose that is normal, but today, except for the blogs and Air America, there is no broadcast of my views.” I’m surprised that the editorial content of Air America doesn’t just rock the radio world – how are their ratings doing, anyway? There ARE other broadcasts of your views – Al Jazeera puts your tripe on all the time.
