Fitzgerald Still Questioning Witnesses, Zeros In On Rove

The right-wing argues that the outing of Valerie Plame’s identity of as a CIA operative isn’t significant. Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, by all accounts a no-nonsense guy, disagrees. He continues to actively pursue the case and appears to be increasingly focused on Karl Rove.

From ABC’s The Note this morning:

Based on ABC News sources (and our own video camera) it appears that at least two witnesses testified before the grand jury last Friday, both close associates of Karl Rove.

ABC News has learned that one was Susan Ralston, Rove’s long-time right hand. The other, per ABC News’ Jake Tapper, was Israel “Izzy” Hernandez, Rove’s former left hand (and now a top Commerce Department official). It isn’t clear if either had been asked to testify before last week.

Looks like Fitzgerald doesn’t believe Rove has been “exonerated.

Did anyone catch Santorum w/George Stephanopolous this week? I swear I heard him say liberals are trying to "dissemble" the family institution. Does that mean to take apart?

  2. Jesus Christ God of WAR Says:

The outting of Ms Plame "isn't significant"? Wow! And I'm the Son of God!

The Bastards continue to lie. Here's some of the damage that was done by Novak, Rove, Bolton, Cheney, and Bush:

Ask not for whom the bell tolls, Karl Rove...

  4. sam Says:

Why are Plame and Rove still being discussed? This story appears to be dead. No one is going to be prosecuted and any damage has already been done. Time to move on.

  5. Brian Says:

    You're a traitor, Sam.

  6. Chris Says:

sam is clueless, hes one of those sheep like Fox viewers. since Fox wont report it, its not a story to him.

  7. hotfroggy+ Says:

how can you say this... "time to move on"? christ, these people will stop at nothing to move more power (profit!!)into their own hands. the whole system of check and balances must be applied to all aspects of government, the president and his hoodlum friends are no exception! while the damage is done, to turn and walk away from upholding constitutional law is no small matter! these crooks make the nixon era crooks look like amatuers!!

  8. truth4achange Says:

Its amazing, isn't it? In administration that prides itself on honesty, integrity and loyalty, millions of dollars have been wasted on investigation, careers have been ruined, and right wing spin machine turns every faster.

    Sen. Graham, Lindsey (R-SC)
    Sen. McCain, John (R-AZ)
    Sen Roberts, Pat (R-Ks)

to let them know the CIA leak is not going away while on vacation.

  11. Krazny Says:

looks like the right wing is really pushing the "nothing to see here" angle on this story.

  12. Ryan Neat Says:

When the right wing says there's nothing to see, it means they know they've screwed things up enough to be descructive... They're really talking to themselves and their like minded lemmings at that point to not look at the evidence in hope that they don't lose their base. They send all of the stupid foot soldiers out with those marching orders - unbeknownst to them...

  13. Ken Mehlman Says:

The fact that Sue & Izzy were subpoenaed to testify before the grand jury actually vindicATES and exonerATES Karl Rove, not implicATE.

(Hey fellow Repubs, can you come up with a word that rhymes with Scooter? Our spin department needs some poetic help please...)

  14. cynical ex-hippie Says:

I hope Dem hopefuls are taking furious notes on all these Repub talking points. Could be useful in 2006 to point out who defended this travesty.

  15. Krazny Says:

    Ken,

can you explain how that exonerates rove please?

  16. Brian Says:

    Alittle jumpy, krazny?

  17. Krazny Says:

Not jumpy just asking a question.

I thought we were allowed to ask questions?

or did I miss a memo somewhere?

  18. bootz Says:

Why are Plame and Rove still being discussed? This story appears to be dead. No one is going to be prosecuted and any damage has already been done. Time to move on.

Is that how it works? The damage has been done so there's no use in pursuing it any further? That's good to know. I guess that would apply if I were to go out and rob a liquor store. When the cops catch up with me, I just say "Hey guys, you're too late. The damage has already been done, so just move along."

Just saying that nobody is going to be prosecuted and it's time to move on doesn't make it so, no matter how hard you wish it were true. One sure sign that it isn't dead is that people like you, Sam, feel compelled to try to convince us that it is. And one sure sign that there are going to be prosecutions is the desperation of the right in its attempts to smear anyone and everyone that dares to push this case or provide evidence that tightens the noose around Rove's neck.

    Thou protesteth too much.

  19. kindness Says:

Sam & someone else were saying the same thing in other threads yesterday.

Yo bushies, that bleeting sound you make may work with you lemmings in the Phaux News crowd, but we still have a republican Federal Prosecutor talking to witnesses about your "heros" failings.

Maybe what you need is more Koolaide....

  20. Gary Kleppe Says:

Krazny: I think "Ken" was pulling our collective leg.

  21. Jesus Christ God of WAR Says:

It appears that Bush supporters have looked in the mirror and realized to their un-ending shock that they are reduced to defending the first true openly visible traitors of the 21st Century.

How anyone can support these traitors (not to mention lying cheating amoral unethical greedy killers) is far beyond me. But Repugs appear to have convinced themselves they've found a way. :-(

"Nothing to see here, move along"? I think not! EVERYTHING to see here and more to dig out!!!

  22. EasyRider Says:

    Sam
What Brian is saying is that if you do not support the National Security agencies and are willing to support people who want to do harm to those agencies, then you are support the commission of a crime against the America government.

Guess what that is! Treason. That Sam is the choice you make. This is not political, but the delibrate exposing of National Sercurity agents was a political act that was commission of the crime of treason.
And you are supporting that act of treason.

  23. Robert Says:

neuter rhymes with scooter.....hmmm......I like where this is going

also: cooter (kind of Bush appropriate

  24. Dan Says:

The glacial pace of Fitzgerald's investigation coupled with the failure of this scandal to meet public scrutiny prior to the 2004 election, leads me to believe that nothing will come of this entire affair.
The events and facts of the scandal are relatively short and sweet; the Adminstration is in good and friendly (Fitzgerald's) hands.

  25. Marie Says:

Sam, First I thought you were nuts; then I thought you were a "plant"; now I know you are an ignorant psycho sent here by the Rethuglicans.

  26. mudkitty Says:

Why worry about 9/11? The damage has been done. Move on. So what if Bin Laden get let off the hook?

  27. Ryan Neat Says:

    mudkitty,

Great retort - but haven't you noticed, Bush has already moved on? He chose not to hold Bin Laden accountable for killing 3000 americans, yet he and the rest of the right wing would love to see Clinton in prison over a blow job. These guys are senseless idiots...

  28. Texas Dem Says:

What bothers me is whether or not Fitzgerald has to give his findings to the White House first for their review before actually indicting. I sure hope not.
Remember those other reports that were given to the White House for cleansing and there was so many black marks on it, one could not get an idea of what was said.

I hope we get an indictment first and then the White House finds out the information at the same time the American people do.

  29. Brian Says:

I can only explain the length of time and the absence of a gag order as Fitz's way of softening the public and the administration. I hope this is the case.

  30. I'mSwiss2 Says:

Gee - I thought I was the one who came up with the word "Repugnantcans." I'm crushed.

  31. bootz Says:

The glacial pace of Fitzgerald’s investigation coupled with the failure of this scandal to meet public scrutiny prior to the 2004 election...

    1) The "glacial pace": Fitzgerald was appointed special counsel on Dec. 30, 2003. I don't think a year and a half is overly long for an investigation into possible criminal behavior by high officials in the White House. It took many weeks for the CIA to finally get a response out of the DOJ just to start the investigation. On top of that, Fitzgerald has had to question some of the same people several different times, apparently due to conflicting or changing stories. So much for full cooperation.

    2) "failure of this scandal to meet public scrutiny prior to the 2004 election": Please elaborate on that one. It's not clear what you're trying to say.

    3) "the Adminstration is in good and friendly (Fitzgerald’s) hands": You might want to check into Fitzgerald's other cases. I don't get the sense that he plays favorites.

  32. Dan Says:

    To bootz,
Had the investigation been at the place it is now one year ago, it would have been a "front burner" issue in the election. It is my sense that the whole affair was deliberately pushed into suspended animation until such recent time that, finally, some truth had to call out. The investigation's timetable is sympathetically designed to minimize damage to the administration.

  33. Mr. Evil Says:

    Don't forget pooter!
Hmmm... Osama bin Laden was trained by the C.I.A. and funded by our government in the '80's to fight the former Soviet Union in Afghanistan. You know what they say about the C.I.A. don't you? Once a company man always a company man!

  34. I'mSwiss2 Says:

Dan - no "front burner" issue would have changed the election. A front burner issue does not unrig the voting machines. Let's review what's happened the past 5 years:

2000 - the Repugs rig the election and voting machines in Florida and steal the election with the help of the repugnant Supreme Court (about to get even more repugnant)
2001 - the Repugs capitalize on 9/11 murder and death and insist Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden have a connection and Iraq is responsible for 9/11
2003 - George Bush cites a known falsity in his State of the Union address(and we know that because of Joe Wilson)
2003 - The Repugs take us into a war with a lie about Iraq having WMD -killing thousands of innocent people
2004 - the Repugs rig the election and voting machines in Ohio and steal the election
2005 - Karl Rove is identified as the one who revealed the identity of Joe Wilson's wife as a CIA operative. Bush backs Rove, says screw you to the people.

    and beyond:
Rove works with Diebold on 2006 elections, and plans for the electronic voting machines in Pennsylvania for 2008.

Along the way many have come forward and tried to get the American people to understand the truth (Clarke, O'Neill, Wilson, etc). The media assists the administration in perpetrating lie after lie and deception after deception, and the American people, greedy and placated by their latest shopping spree, brainwashed and ingorant in a trance in front of Fox TV, fall for it. The internet becomes the last hope to free us from the asses of evil and corruption. We are running out of time.

  35. bootz Says:

Dan, I agree with you about the timing. But, you can stack this one on top of a huge pile of issues that were stonewalled, lied about, and just plain buried before the election. If the news media were simply doing their job, it would have changed the outcome. And considering the number of crimes and ethics violations that will never get investigated while the Republicans are in power, we have to feel lucky that this one is going anywhere. No matter how smug and self-confident Bush and Rove appear to be, there's no way they wanted this kind of negative attention over this long a period of time. It's taking a toll on Bush's approval and favorability ratings across the board and his poll numbers for credibility continue to drop. People are catching on.

  36. Donald from Hawaii Says:

Dan: "The glacial pace of Fitzgerald’s investigation coupled with the failure of this scandal to meet public scrutiny prior to the 2004 election, leads me to believe that nothing will come of this entire affair."

The Watergate scandal also met a similar fate of public indifference prior to Richard Nixon's 1972 re-election. Too bad that citizens caught on afterward, and Nixon was unable to finish out his second term, eh?

  37. hotfroggy+ Says:

while the story may be "dead" in your world, NPR is devoting a 1/2 hour today, right now, to the "plamegate" affair and just why it is important. if you think this issue is going away, think again and turn on your radio! thank god the repugs don't own public radio, or do they?

  38. Krazny Says:

There trying with public radio. However news is news is news. despite there attempts to paint NPR as liberal it is not succeding.

  39. Nicky Says:

Move on? From a case of treason in the White House where the evildoer hasn't been punished yet? *guffaw*

You can't play the "move on" card unless you said the same thing about Clinton's indiscretions with an inten. They made a federal case out of that, but now with a TRAITOR in the WH as the President's right hand man they say "move on". *guffaw*

  40. Maezeppa Says:

I agree with Sam - It's time to move (Karl Rove) on (into the federal pen).

  41. Blackdog Says:

Keep the pressure on until the fat lady sings. This travesty against the nation needs full sun. Let's watch and see if the repukes try to fire the prosecutor instead of extending his term. Go for blood.

  42. Ryan Neat Says:

I always love it how the treasonous and treacherous right wing fascists scream 'move on' when treason and betrayal of the american people are involved - but they can't seem to buy enough copies of the 'star report' to get their pornographic highs...

    They're sad little Sociopathic morons!

  43. hal lewis Says:

I held clearances as high as Top Secret-special access required. To get a TS clearance you have to sign a document stating that you will not disclose classified information and will out anyone that you know who does. The penalties, if convicted have the "up to phrases" ie a fine up to some amount and/or jail time up to some amount. Any attempt at a cover up will be countered by grand juror statements and a continuation of damaging statements by current and retired CIA people who have to be livid about the outing.

  45. Anne Says:

Not only is the Valerie Plame investigation on-going, but did you all know there is a second CIA officer who was fired and discredited for disputing the administration's claims prior to going into Iraq? His case is currently in federal court. He was in the same unit as Plame. It was in the NYT on 8/1/05, article by James Risen, and covered at Yahoo News and MichaelMoore.com.

  46. Ryan Neat Says:

    Anne,

I saw that. Like all alcoholic and abusive dysfunctional families - the administration cares more about protecting its image and its dysfunction than it does the truth or 'getting better'. Classic psychosis, unfortunately the world has to pay for these freaks own personal demons...

Isn't Jeff the guy who continues to show up at various GOP shindigs? Isn't Jeff the guy who had daily access to White House press briefings even when there were none? How about that picture of dumya rubbing Jeff's bald head? How much of the taxpayers' money got sucked into Jeff's wooden drawers?
Oh, Jeff, how could you, y'all?

  49. Anon Says:

Well the Tom Flocco site appears to be experiencing a DOS attack! Not surprising because of the explosive nature of the scoop!.

    A summary:

A Chicago grand jury has indicted the President and Vice-President of the United States along with multiple high officials in the Bush administration

Chicago -- August 2, 2005 -- TomFlocco.com -- U.S. federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald's Chicago grand jury has issued perjury and obstruction of justice indictments to the following members of the Bush Administration: President George W. Bush, Vice-President Richard Cheney, Bush Chief of Staff Andrew Card, Cheney Chief of Staff I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez, former Attorney General John Ashcroft, imprisoned New York Times reporter Judith Miller and former Senior Cheney advisor Mary Matalin.

There were no indications given as to whether the President and his top staff members would appear publicly before cameras at the grand jury proceedings, given the gravity of the charges.

Besides the Valerie Plame CIA leak case, the Fitzgerald probe is reportedly far-reaching and expanding much deeper into past White House criminal acts involving Bush-Clinton drug money laundering in Mena, Arkansas to White House involvement in 9.11; but also for sending America's young people to their deaths or to be maimed in Iraq and Afghanistan under false pretenses.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair was indicted for obstruction of justice and is reportedly consulting with members of Parliament and legal aides regarding how to avoid appearing in the U.S.A. for interrogation before Fitzgerald in Chicago.

The revelations emanated from sources close to the grand jury who spoke with federal whistleblower Thomas Heneghen in California who said White House Senior Advisor to the President Karl Rove was also indicted for perjury and was reportedly involved with Mary Matalin in a major Bush administration document shredding operation to cover-up evidence.

Heneghen had reported over ten days ago on a TruthRadio.com broadcast [Every Monday and Tuesday evening from 8-9 pm EST--www.truthradio.com--special briefing on Wednesday evening August 3 at 8 pm EST]] that his sources close to the grand jury said former Secretary of State Colin Powell had been subpoenaed and had testified against President Bush, telling the citizen panel that the President had taken the United States to war based upon lies--a capital crime involving treason under the United States Code.

Heneghen also reported a week ago that Gonzalez and Card had been subpoened and that Tony Blair had defied his subpoena after the response time limit had expired.

Yes, Some of us are very aware that there is another spy who tells a tale not unlike the one of Plame. But the MSM is pretty quiet about it. It is barely mentioned in the press or TV. The CIA employees are FURIOUS, but you see where that will get them: Demeaned, dismissed, disrespected, disregarded, then exiled. This is King George -- we're subjects -- and CIA, FBI, and everyone else in govt. must entertain the King and keep him happy or there will be hell to pay at the hands of his personal prime minister - Rove.

In mid-1999, the clinton lifted export restrictions on computers operating between 2,000 and 6,500 MTOPS. A standard single processer 3ghz destktop PC is in fact FASTER than these 'super computer' speeds - that's how insanely out of date the restrictions were, and how STUPID this guy and the rest of the right wing smear machine is. I personally think it all would be decisive if we go back to the reason the towers fell....the truth about 911 will set us all free....no other steel frame building has EVER collapsed 'cause of fire..get to the scientific reason for the collapse and......everything else followed, and makes perfect sense.

Iraq was and is a disaster....let's not let them continue. We need more whistle blowers!

Rove is a small--but prosecutable--detail in the fabric of wholesale criminality of the Bush Crime Syndicate and its Satanist networks.

It's so easy to spend all our energy on straining at this gnat and still swallowing all the camels : war profiteering, election fraud, drug-running and money-laundering, but most especially, LIES, DECEIT, CONCEALMENTS, SECRECY AND BACK ROOM DEALS.

This is not merely bring down the US : this is bringing down Civilization, the permission to fabricate, obfuscate and mislead.

Rove to be indicted "this week or early next",
    by PACollegeDem

    Wow! Big news--Chris
I realize a few diaries have already talked about RedState user OhSure's comment (supposedly confirmed by good sources) that Rove is to be indicted soon, but here's a little more on the coming indictment from Dissident Voice's Joshua Frank (the link comes courtesy of Come And Take It, a community of Texas left wing bloggers):

Occasionally I get emails from Washington folks who work on the Hill claiming to possess juicy insider digs on our public servants and their corporate paymasters. I usually delete said emails, as I don't want to be responsible for propagating dirty rumors or false information that can't be corroborated. I'd rather let Judith Miller and the New York Times do that. Nonetheless, in the past 24 hours I have been contacted by three separate congressional Democrats in Washington, by email and later phone, who all say the same thing: Karl Rove is about to be indicted.

Joshua Frank also makes note of the RedState comment:

Apparently, I'm not the only one who has been leaked this information either. Over at Redstate, a right-wing Internet blog, one member who calls himself "Ohsure", also claims that "[four] Great sources confirmed" the matter, and later added: "I not only don't do this, I have never done this. But here it is; `Karl Rove will be indicted late this, or early next week.' I'm trusting a source. So either I am made a [sic] into an overzealous horses a**, or..., I have good sources and may be more trusted to get these things right."

It looks like Rove isn't going to be able to weasel out of this. I've been skeptical since the start (as one Kossack put it "I'm afraid to get excited about this like a poor kid is afraid to get excited about Christmas) but this is definitely hopeful news. The Washington buzz is that Rove will be indicted; now let's work on that conviction.

But what about all the speculation that this could unravel something a little higher up? It looks like the White House is seeking some heavy duty cover; namely Jim Sharp. The link, also via Come And Take It, has some exceprts from FindLaw and RawStory explaining the implications of Bush seeking outside counsel and elaborating on Jim Sharp's expertise in covering up GOP "accidents", including his involvement in representing some big players in Iran-Contra.

The ball is rolling, and it will not be stopped.

    Also from http://cloakanddagger.de/

Tom Flocco was warned by a U.S. Intelligence source that a contract FBI Division 5 operative had compromised his website without his knowledge. He made the decision to immediately move the site to a new server since the site was unstable and experiencing intermittent availability. The recent stories "Financial Terrorism Towers Over 9.11" and "Bush and Cheney Indicted" will both be placed up online with his archive shortly, while his website is restored. Tom was locked out of the administration editor which allows the posting of stories and news on his site; and the site went up and down on the web during certain parts of the last few days without his knowledge or control.
