Novak Criticized Carville For “Foul Mouth,” Said He Was “Poisoning America”»

CNN’s Crossfire, 7/11/02, during a discussion about whether a woman who cursed at a police officer should have been arrested:

NOVAK: Mr. Walczak, you…probably don’t have much experience with foul mouths. But I can understand what the cops go through, because I have to deal with Begala and Carville. And I’d like you to listen to a little — just a little small selection of what I have to put up with. Would you listen?

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BEGALA: We’re going to kick a little right-wing ass.

JAMES CARVILLE, CO-HOST, CROSSFIRE: When these sons of bitches just knocked down two of our buildings.

BEGALA: (UNINTELLIGIBLE) fired my ass at MSNBC.

CARVILLE: If there is a completely neutral person, I don’t want to know the son of a bitch.

BEGALA: Bush is going to sign a strong Democratic bill, and that makes you look like a schmuck, doesn’t it?

(END VIDEO CLIP)

NOVAK: Isn’t that the decline of values in language that is… that is poisoning America?

My, how times have changed.

Novak wasn’t so critical of Dick Cheney’s foul mouthed “f— you” on the Senate floor last year. In fact, he thought it was even funny. What a hypocrite.

  4. Marie Says:

Let’s not forget Cheney’s “F**k you to Sen. Leahy in the Senate.
The sanctimonious right always get their collective shorts in a knot over language; it’s to keep our eyes off of their actions.
I have never seen a group, which, in general, is so hypocritical. They are very quick to point to the mote in the Democrats’ eye, while ignoring the log in their own — to paraphrase from their favorite book.
By the way, the ACLU is AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES union — they defend everyone whose rights have been abused. Hell, they even defended Rush Lintball. The righties LOVE to criticize ACLU for defending blacks, gays, atheists, and other minorities, but when they feel abused, who do they call?

Thinkprogress, some very revealing posts on Novak and Santorum. Truly enjoy how you expose how absurd these characters are…

That said, today being the 60th death anniversary of 140,000 in Hiroshima, I hope you have some posts about where the world stands today in nuclear non-proliferation, especially our own efforts to build new “mini-nukes” and “bunker-busters” and so forth.

  6. The Janitors, American Federalist Urinal Says:

Times have changed. This was Novak a few short months ago. Well, maybe it’s just Novak who’s changed…

    Bob in Paradise

How Novak created his own ethics-free zone.

    (…)

The election of George W. Bush elevated Novak’s power and reputation to their apex. The administration’s tightly controlled press shops released so few pieces of information—and so few sources were willing to talk to reporters—that any journalist who could gain significant access to administration officials could be sure of a wide audience. Novak did just that.

    (…)

On one special occasion during the past year, Novak made an exception and broke his radio silence on the Plame case. In March, at the ultimate Washington insider event—the annual Gridiron Club dinner—Novak starred in a skit about the Plame leak. Dressed in a top hat and cut-away coat, the columnist hammed it up in front of an audience of his peers, crooning to the tune of “Once I Had a Secret Love.â€? Novak sang off-key about outing “a girl spyâ€? thanks to “a secret source who lived within the great White House.â€? And he finished it off with a killer closing line, delivered with a wink and a grin: “Cross the right wing you may try / Bob Novak’s coming after you.â€? The audience howled.

And on the subject of Novak v Carville, why does CNN have a segment called “Strategy Session” in the first place? Discourse is getting worse and worse…

  8. Flamethrower Says:

I sent a mail to CNN, they actually responded. Here’s the text:

Thank you for your email to us concerning Bob Novak.

Mr. Novak’s behavior on CNN during Thursday’s broadcast of Inside Politics was inexcusable and unacceptable.

Mr. Novak has apologized to CNN, and CNN apologizes to its viewers for his language and actions. CNN has asked Mr. Novak to take some time off.

Mind you, I’ve sent hundreds of mails on various subjects, including blatant lies repeated by the hosts. This is the first response ever.

  20. Ron Says:

Robert Novak is a very tolerant Republican, I must say. He allows himself to converse with James Carville. That takes tolerance and compassion.

James Carville is always full of himself and el toro poopoo.

CNN would do themselves a favor by getting rid of Carville.

However, television is dead. I seldom watch much of it anymore.

CNN should have an hour program of people cursing and swearing anything and everything. Call it ‘You, Yourself and Them’ or something like that.

I curse and swear all of the time. There is nothing wrong with it, it makes me feel better. Try it sometime.

Had I been Robert Novak, I would have told James Carville to go to hell. What’s the big idea anyway? A Democrat marrying a Republican woman. What a wuss.

If they would all just quit lying all of the time, they wouldn’t be in the mess they’re in. However, the truth doesn’t pay, so the Bushits and the Republicans and the Democrats are not going to quit their lying. It’s their ‘bread and butter.’ It’ll never stop.

Four more dead American soldiers. That is twenty-seven in this week. Maybe lying doesn’t pay. It sure makes me cuss and swear. I’m with Robert Novak, it’s all bullshit.

Here is a email I sent to CNN on August 2.

    Subject: CNN

    Date: Tue 08/02/05 03:17 PM

I have seen several interviews that are a real disappointment to journalism. Your interviewers go into an interview being completely devoid of any knowledge on the subject being disgust, if you can say allowing the right-winger speak over the other individual comments and statements. The right-wingers are never stopped. They are never corrected for false statements. They are never confronted with the truth of the subject that they are supporting.

This happens on every show you air. It is the reason fewer and fewer viewers are turning in to your programs.

If you programs want to you must have real journalism and not enterentment as you goal. Enterentment is your weakness, not your strenght.

    For example:
Bible school being taught using public funds.
How about Intelligent Design? Who is behind these efforts? Where do they come from?

Here are some links to the people and institutes that are behind and just what are their goals?

  22. Darth Filibustrous Says:

Does anyone remember an incident last year in New Hampshire when a dude within the crowd called Novak a traitor and Novak physically attacked him? Don’t recall the details but it sure was funny.

  24. Anne Says:

Novak is simply disgusting. I can’t stand to look at his smug face, and when he talks my skin crawls. CNN, do yourself a favor and let him go to Fox, or some where else as bad.

  25. kindness Says:

Ron - at least Carville is honest. That’s more than can say about Novak or you for that matter.

  26. Peteykins Says:

Awesome catch, Nico. That’s f**king hilarious.

    Novak Cracking

Why so upset, Bob? Is it from giving up your friends to the federal prosecutor?

  28. Alan Vranian Says:

I associate myself with all the remarks above expressing my view, too, that CNN is losing its credibility very quickly. Your stories are becomming more and more right-slanted in indirect ways and the ongoing support of Novack was symptomatic of putting profit ahead of integrity, and you repeat them over and over and over ad nauseum. I tune in to watch Anderson daily for a while, and then Paula is usually just another rehash of everything else, nothing new. So I move on to more interesting stations who have less agenda.

  29. Alan Vranian Says:

oops (blush) I thought I was writing to cnn… sorry

Absolutely correct!!! Where is Ted when we need him? This doesn’t even pretend to be a news network, anymore. Such a loss during this period of weak MSM!!!

  31. EasyRider Says:

Here is a Right-wing site listing some activities by various right-wing organizations. Notice that Bob Novak, Ann Coutler, and Oliver North do a lot of speaking for the Young America’s Foundation. Young America’s Foundation is at the bottom of the site.

    The site is: http://www.heritage.org/ about/ community/ insider/ 2000/ may00/ events.html

How can you be a journalist and speak at these events?

  32. Waldo Says:

“NOVAK: Isn’t that the decline of values in language that is… that is poisoning America?”

Without seeing the video, I can’t be sure, but it seems like Novak may have been sarcastic here– I.E., ribbing the liberals for their “gutter language” but not sincerely so. He’s always making wry/snide asides, so this may have just been an example of that. Just to be fair..

speaking of fair, I hope everyone’s writing to the FCC demanding that Novak pay some exhorbitantly inappropriate fine for swearing on the air, a la U2’s “fookin’ brilliant” line at that awards show.

  33. Skid Says:

    Waldo,

FCC can’t touch Novak OR CNN. They are cable.

  34. Ron Says:

I would trust Robert Novak long before James Carville, sorry. Besides, all of this stuff is a red herring. It is the war in Iraq that is the problem.

    They’re shooting the messenger.

The war is based on lies. That’s treason. Impeach Bush.

Forget about Robert Novak. Keep your eye on the ball.

Be kind, kindness. I’m honest, but I don’t know about you.

The old saying goes like this: “Your dad work?” “No, he’s a cop.” Honest?” “No, just like all the rest.”

  35. Brian Says:

I finally figured it out: Novak sounds like Winnie the Pooh.

  36. Skid Says:

Better yet, write whatever papers that run his column saying you will cancel unless they drop him as well. Its a sacrifice, but do what you feel is neccessary, of course.

  37. Skid Says:

I’ll take Carville over Novak any day, for what little it matters.

  38. cynical ex-hippie Says:

No, he wasn’t cursing. He was plugging the new book by Professor Harry G. Frankfurt. Now stop that liberal hand-wringing! ;)

Um…which one of them is a “journalist?”

  40. little m Says:

CNN apologized but its Novak who should apologize - and CNN should insist that he do an on-camera apology. Novak can eat his words about foul mouths now - when he talked about foul language he was in actuality he means dems. This is just another double standards cause Novak seems ok when the Right uses improper language. Hypocrites………..

  41. kindness Says:

Sorry Ron, I know my scrren name here is kindness, but I am frequently less than kind. I just didn’t agree with your accessment. My opinion of Novak has never been very high. He always seemed to be rather high horse and more pious than though attitude and demeanor. After purposely outing Plame, frankly I think he should be charged with whatever the crime is for purposely outing secret agents.

Off thread. Go to MSNBC’s site and vote on dubya’s handling of the Iraq War. Current votes - 82% don’t think he is handling it well. I don’t care how you vote, just vote (of course I’m not going over to Redstate to tell them the same thing).

  42. little m Says:

From what I hear, Ann Coulter has a really foul mouth and as for Oliver North - he lied to Congress - boy you call them role models - I wouldn’t let me kids within 100 miles of them.

  43. TVsOff Says:

These antics on CNN don’t surprise me. It’s been my opinion for years that CNN stands for Comedy News Network.

  44. Jon Says:

Novak may have had a complete meltdown, but the Avenging Angel’s Conservative Villain of the Week is James Dobson.

  45. Ryan Neat Says:

If we had a penny for everytime a CONservative was a hypocrit, we could pay off the national debt!

  46. cynical ex-hippie Says:

Novak, put a nickle in the jar on your way out…

  47. kim Says:

Bob Novak is a huge figure in DC politics and journalism. I’ve watched and read him for decades, don’t often agree with his opinion, but count on him to convey Republican positions clearly and strongly. I’ve learned a great deal this way over the years. I am mad about the Plame story.

Regarding his tantrum yesterday, I don’t think it had anything to do with drinking, depression, etc…. Carville and Novak were needling each other throughout the program, probably ratcheting up pressure for the Plame segment. Novak freaked out, said something he shouldn’t, looked to the moderator to reign in Carville, realized he was in a bad position, and walked off.

A “time out” is probably fair but I’m looking forward to his returning, expecially for a rematch with Carville.

  48. Sara Says:

Dear Mr. Novak - Since you obviously don’t know how to do basic research, let me help you out a little - “schmuck” is not profanity! It’s Yiddish! A foreign language, which I am sure you do not speak. The translation is “jerk, fool, idiot, contemptible person” - seems to suit you perfectly!
Special thanks to the Yiddish Online Dictionary.

  49. kindness Says:

They’re old pro’s. Just like Arnold said…”I’ll be back”. (if only they would take Arnold away from me, AHHHHH!!!)

  50. Steed Lankershim Says:

This doesn’t even come close to Al Franken’s freakouts. But he gets a pass because he’s your hero.

  51. Dumb Fox Says:

#52 - Franken gets a pass because he doesn’t out CIA agents.

  52. Darth Filibustrous Says:

And Franken doesn’t have double standards - he never accused others of their “foul mouths poisoning America” just for saying “ass” or “SOB”.

  53. Anne Says:

    God, I miss Dan Rather.

  56. Marie Says:

#23 - Believe it or not, I sent a very similar letter in the past month to CNN. I wonder how many more of us are out there telling them what we think.

  57. Marie Says:

Novak and Carville always needle one another - it’s what they do. Yesterday, Novak knew that the next question was going to be Henry’s asking him about the Plame case, and I think the pressure of keeping all his lies straight, his federal troubles, and his exhaustion contributed to his cracking. Note he wasn’t looking at Carville, he was looking down at the desk and at Henry.
He is a mean-spirited, vindictive, hypocritical old man and he should have retired long ago. I hope he’s gone for good.

  58. Gerrie Blum Says:

There is more to the definition of “schmuck” than was found in the online Yiddish Dictionary.

The word actually comes from German (as much of Yiddish does) and means “jewelry” … particularly gold items like watch chains, lockets, etc. It originally came into Yiddish as an obscenity. (Perhaps an association with the “family jewels”?) and only in recent times has it attained respectablity as only pejorative. (In fact, it finds its way into crossword puzzles that originate in NY newspapers, along with “schlep” “nosh” and “shlemiel.”)

So, if you want to have a nosh with a schmuck like Novak, you’re a shlemiel. :-)

  59. cynical ex-hippie Says:

This doesn’t even come close to Al Franken’s freakouts.

Which show did Franken walk out on?

  60. Ryan Neat Says:

    cynical,

He didn’t, but CONservatives all grasp for straws when reality comes crashing down on their delusional heads… They’re all stupid hypocrits.

  61. boing Says:

Novak suddenly realized his whole professional life was a farcical mistake, stops on a road to being the Wall sTreet Journal Editorial Page’s prison bitch.

  62. Mr. Evil Says:

I think that Robert Novak is just coming to the realization that he is nothing but a sacrificial lamb for the Bush administration. James Carville has needled and poked at him for years with not even a hint of a reaction like the meltdown recently on CNN.

Carl Rove would sell out his own mother to save his chubby butt! I believe most of those chicken hawks would do so also.

If I were Novak, I would sing like a canary to keep myself from having a massive coronary from the stress of protecting these extreme lowlifes not to mention the possibility of going to jail for them.

  63. cynical ex-hippie Says:

Is it just me, or are young republicans getting fatter? Are they trying to emulate their hero, Chubby Karl? Or are the celebratory beer bongs taking their toll?

  64. whaaaaaa? Says:

Last week Leno ran a video of bush flipping off the press (which , of course, he uses to speak to the american people). I have not seen it since. How come it is not on every news show and blog. It hasn’t even made it on The Daily Show. It happened very recently and should plastered everywhere.

And, speaking of The Daily Show, they ran the clip of Novak uncensored 3 times in one episode. But, when John Stewart used the same profanity as a punchline, it was bleeped. Are they trying to bait a response from those who attack profanity, making Novak the center of attention? I sure hope so. I love The Daily Show.

  65. Ryan Neat Says:

    whaaaaa,

Because the MSM is a corporate bitch of the right wingers. The ‘myth’ of a liberal media is less real than unicorns…

  66. Bushit Says:

    Again, I say $%$%*#@ %^$$#$$@@%

  67. sara Says:

Thanks Gerrie! As a jewelry collector, that’s a useful word for me in more than one way now! Cool!

  68. Karen Says:

I’m thinking the bush house of cards could be short one joker….maybe not though,….even that was built with a stacked deck….

  69. Dr. Shock Says:

I’d love to offer Bob Novak a job hosting the Creature Double Feature, Saturday nights at 11:30 on FOX 49.

  70. cynical ex-hippie Says:

I’d like to think this will end like the final episode of Seinfeld. All the weird characters come together one last time, in a courtroom. Then we fade out as Novak leads Rove, Cheney, Bush, and Rumsfeld in a jail cell roundtable discussion.

  71. MisterB Says:

    Pot, Kettle, Black?

  72. Mark Says:

While Al Franken was doing comedy on SNL, Novak was busy justifying every imperialist invasion brought to you by Ron Raygun during the first incarnation of the 4th Reich that is now in its fully formed adulthood.Novak has carried the water for Republikans MURDERERS since day freaking one. Wake up, poor ignorant moron and read a history of your beloved Home of the Brave, Land of the Free. It’s called The Decline and Fall of the Third Reich. Hear the hob nails yet, fool.

  73. Michael Martine Says:

The whole thing was staged so that Novak wouldn’t have to answer questions about Plame. CNN giving him time off is an extension of that. They’re taking him out of the line of fire.

  74. Nana Says:

One day last week C Span was covering a Young America Foundation event somewhere–imagine my suprise when the guest speaker, Bob Novak spent several minutes telling the audience he was a registered Democrat and had been so for many years. He made it sound like that should give him credibility as a impartial journalist. The crowd ate it up–I wanted to Barf!

  75. Jan Says:

CNN was looking for the oportunity to oust Novak. He charmingly and timely gave it to them.

  76. pjr Says:

Laughably hypocritical and disingenous; what else would you expect from Novak, an anachronism of the worst order, and hatchet man for the far Right. I wouldn’t piss down his throat if his lungs were on fire.

  77. kim Says:

    Hey Gerrie Blum,
Are you saying that schmuck is the way Germans said “bling” years ago? :-)

    Thanks for the info!

  78. Virginia Herman Says:

I like Robert Novak. Carville is nauseating. How can anyone stand to listen to him?

By the way, how come CNN let Bill Hemmer go? He was my favorite. I’m switching to Fox News when they put him on the air.

  83. Blutus Says:

I too have wondered how Novak continues to escape prosecution. Supposedly he has hung around DC for so long that he has dirt on everywhere and, like J. Edgar Hoover, people are afraid to take him on. The mystery is why the right wing allows such a surly, unlikeable, sneering jack-ass carry their water for them.
And Bush is no monkey. Just look at him. Clearly a chimp.

  84. chester Says:

Cursing is much more appropriate than sticking your dick in an intern’s mouth in the Oval Office. Especially if you just happen to be the President of the USA.

  85. Blutus Says:

Yeah, that’s right Chester–Presidents can’t have oral sex. All male Americans that have a problem with oral sex, please raise your hand. I’m sure your moral superiority will comfort all those mothers whose sons lost limbs or died in Iraq defending America’s right to steal resources from whereever they want. What fools Americans have become.

  86. Phyllis Says:

I always had a lot of respect for all those with a ‘gift’ of the English Language. Anyone that has to ’swear’ to make a point shows a LACK of control over his emotions…how very sad that our Politicians, Reporters and those on CNN and other stations have to resort to ‘gutter language’ to make a point.

  87. tedbohne Says:

Novak’s a coward and a hypocrite. Follows “foul” language WITH foul language! I wish I’d been Mr. Carville, I’d have got up and drawn back five folded fingers at the south pole headed at ever increasing speed to Anchorage with NOVAK’S pudgy queer face enroute and let it fly.
