that slams labor unions who criticize Wal-Mart. Turns out the paper forgot to mention that the author of the op-ed works for a nonprofit whose main funder is the Walton Family Foundation, the charitable arm of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton.
Think of Wal-Mart as a giant Count Dracula, for it is a success story of Vampires. Wal-Mart the Vampire Store, sucking the blood of small business, small consumers, small-wage earners. “Buy American”? Mierda. “Sell out Americans” comes closer to reality.
I won’t shop Wal-Mart unless ABSOLUTELY necessary as it put two regional big-box companies that I worked for out of business. Not to say that we were doing everything right, but WM, with its pricing tactics was the final killer. And that doesn’t include all the little guys it finished off over the years in every town it has gone into.!! Buy American? A joke if you’re shopping there!!
Once Wal-mart thinks they have a stranglehold on the competition the prices will slowly rise, as they have at Lowes and Home Depot. Most mom and pop hardware stores have gone out of business and I have watched the prices at these stores get quite unreasonable.
I don’t do business with any company that supports BushCo.
I’m doing what Campaign Manager suggested a couple of weeks ago.
He said to write “screw you Bush supporter” on any type of offer you recieve in the mail and send it back. It works great with credit card companies as they always include postage paid envelopes. Magazine and newspaper subcriptions usually include postage paid envelopes too.
I get great satisfaction from it. Thank you Campaign Manager, great idea!
I don’t blame the paper for not censoring its op-ed columns, but it should have noted the affiliation.
#8, Susan, my co-worker has been doing this for a while and he’s gotten me doing it too! I figure every little comment that gets out there can have a subliminal effect.
My wife and I own a small “Mom and Pop” business and have no problem with Wal-mart. In fact we employ as many of the Wal-mart marketing practices as we can adapt. The problem is not Wal-mart. The problem is the restrictive trade practices of the Bush administration that favor the large Corporations. It is the duty of the small business owner to develop his product and market in such a manner that the Wal-marts and the shrubbery cannot touch them. It is possible.

No one “has to” shop at Wal-Mart. There is ALWAYS an alternative. I own a “mom and pop” business and I DO have a problem with WalMart practices. They lie, they cheat their suppliers, they do not pay their employees and they are unethical. They will buy from one supplier long enough until they can have it copied in the orient they they will drop the supplier like a hot potato. I hope that these are not the practices that are being adopted by others.
#10,
Are all your employees making crappy wages and offered part-time only without benefits? Do they have to use government assistence for food or medical care? If the answer to either is yes, you’re no better than Wal-Mart and should be boycotted as well.
I think people are forgetting that the public helped create Walmart. Why would you want to pay more for something if it was cheaper at Walmart? I do not agree with Walmart’s tactics, however. For years, they touted the “Bring it home to the USA” campaign while they were the largest importer among the big three discounters. I also believe that they should pay fair wages to their employees as well, some of which they have gotten away from since Sam died. In their early days, Walmart employees received shares of stock in lieu of higher wages and many store managers retired as millionaires. Now that they are the behemouth corporation with little room for growth, they are no longer the darling of Wall Street, but they need to compensate their employees better. Boycott them if you want, but they are not going away, not until someone comes along that can do it better.
Wal-Mart has single-handedly ruined three businesses in the three years since it was built directly behind $200,000 townhomes. Two hardware stores and supermarket that have been in our community for over 25 years are gone and their employees displaced into a job market that practically promises they will be forced to take similar jobs at less pay with fewer benefits if they can find one at all.
#16 I have a Costco membership but they are not yet in Wal Mart’s league. They do well against Sam’s though. I have to agree with #15, WM is number one because they are the best at what they do. Hate them all you want.

The online version of the op-ed piece has a clarification now. Nevertheless, sloppy editing by the Globe…

August 17th, 2005 at 10:26 amCostco does pretty well, and they offer good wages and benefits to thier employees. Of course what they do is slightly different.
to be honest I go to target not that much more expensive and usually better quality.

August 17th, 2005 at 2:19 pmThat is why people fight to keep wal-mart out of thier communities.
up her in washington and oregon there is 2 or 3 fights to prevent wal-mart from opening new stores.
