White House Energy Policy Running On Empty

Getting from here to there is getting harder and harder to afford these days; the price for a gallon of gas in the U.S. has gone up twenty cents in just the past three weeks. President Bush readily admits the giant energy bill he signed last week would do nothing to impact skyrocketing gas prices. Is the White House doing anything to ease America’s sticker shock at the pump? You be the judge:

In a White House press briefing yesterday, a reporter asked:

Is there nothing that the federal government can do to help Americans who are feeling it at the pump?

The White House answer? Er…we made a web site:

The Department of Energy and EPA have a joint web site called, Fueleconomy.gov. This is a place where people can learn about gas mileage tips.

The Fueleconomy.gov site provides ground-breaking fuel economy tips: drivers should obey the speed limit, use cruise control and put items in their trunks instead of on the overhead rack to reduce aerodynamic drag. What it doesn’t explain, however, is why the Bush administration this week killed a proposal which would have actually done something to conserve gas.

It’s true. The New York Times yesterday announced the White House was abandoning its 2003 proposal to extend fuel economy regulations to include Hummers and other huge SUVs, some of which get as little as 8 miles per gallon. When fuel efficiency standards for American cars were first crafted in the 1970s, you see, big, heavy vehicles for personal use – like SUVs and Hummers — didn’t exist. Today, that class of vehicles remains outside current fuel efficiency laws and Big Business automakers, who love the big profit margin, want to keep it that way.

Another tip: If possible telocommute from your Texas ranch rather than going into the office.

And stop driving so far to protest! Staying home and yelling at the TV is just as effective as petitioning the President in person.

Have you heard the latest CNBC spin? Paraphrasing: “Gas prices go up when there’s increased demand, and increased demand happens when the economy is going good, more jobs, more productivity etc. So this is really a sign of good times”

    Why should anyone be surprised.
They have no answers — only spin — served with a side of smoke and mirrors.

If Daddy and Cheney didn’t own the oil companies the Shrubbery could do two things: (1) Eliminate all gasoline taxes (Federal, State, Local); (2) make up the difference in tax income by imposing an excess profits tax on all oil companies that cannot be passed on to the consumer; (3) charge all oil companies with conspiracy to defraud under the anti-trust and antiprofiteering during war time laws; and refuse all technical support to OPEC countries retroactive to the first american technician until the price of oil is below a fair price considering production costs (say $25.00/barrel). Retroactive meaning we will level their oil fields if they don’t cooperate.

One thing we learned from the 60’s is that actual live protesting attracts television news cameras and attention. Until the people start getting mad and actually protesting en masse nothing much is going to be done about the gas prices or anything else for that matter.
This administration is run by greedy, powermad idealogues that will stop at nothing to get their way and get our money. All they want us to be is a good little automaton and graciously and blindly accept all that they tell us. If that’s the kind of life you want and the kind of world you want to live in then just turn on FOX news or American Idol again and go back to sleep!

Here’s an idea. Stop buying gas hog autos. Just like we did duriing the energy crisis in the 70’s.

  10. cynical ex-hippie says:

Can’t tax overseas oil companies. That money goes straight to terrorists. Mabye another flag on your SUV might help?

  11. just john says:

Has anybody considered a change to toll bridge and toll road policy to reclassify SUVs as other than passenger cars? They obviously mass more, which implies more wear-and-tear on the roads, so I think it would be hard to argue against the notion.

I imagine this would be a state-level decision, for most places.

  12. Spudge_Boy says:

Both GM and Ford were delisted because they don’t have smaller cars on their roadmaps, only gas hungry SUVs.

There is also another story going around about some “geeks” that have tweaked a Toyota Prius to get 250mpg.

The problem is the auto companies working hand-in-hand with the oil companies. If Bush wants to cut down on the American addiction to foriegn oil, he should hit the oil industry and automakers with fines. Oh wait, those are all of his friends. Won’t happen.

  13. Concerned Conservative says:

You guys should be happy that gas prices are so high –talk about increasing demand for hybrids! They’ll be flying off the lots now!

  14. Spudge_Boy says:

“Has anybody considered a change to toll bridge and toll road policy to reclassify SUVs as other than passenger cars?”

Did you know that you get e bigger tax break if you buy a Hummer than if you buy a Toyota Prius. Why, because it IS in a different category than passenger cars. It is considered a Commercial Vehicle and gets those tax breaks.

My problem is that I don’t know why anybody would pay so much money for an ugly Hummer body that is put onto a Chevy Sonoma frame. Just buy the Sonoma. Your Hummer/H2/H3 IS NOT a Humvee. Not anymore than my lightsabre can really cut through stuff.

  15. Spudge_Boy says:

“You guys should be happy that gas prices are so high –talk about increasing demand for hybrids! They’ll be flying off the lots now!”

Do you think before you post? Why would that make us happy?

Anyone here own a car company?

  17. Mr. Evil says:

Since bribery is illegal, why aren’t most lobbyists in jail? Why isn’t Tom DeLay indicted, prosecuted and in jail? And if lobbying is such an important part of the legislative process, who lobbies for the American people?
A good start to reorganizing our government back to the way it was intended to function is to outlaw lobbying altogether. Then bribery will once again be a serious offense with serious ramifications.

  18. Concerned Conservative says:

Actually Just John, there already is a tax on heavier, lower gas mileage vehicles — the gas tax. I think increasing that would be a simpler way to force people to stop driving what they want to drive.

Spudge Boy, sorry, I just thought most people here are pro-hybrid…

Tell me that the war in Iraq has nothing to do with the price of gasoline in America.

I never said it doesn’t. I just don’t think Iraq and the price of oil are the most critical issues for America. Right now, almost all the issues we have to deal with are critical, thanks to the incompetent psychopaths in power.

  29. Jesus says:

  31. Jesus says:

    Justine,
There is a lesson to be learned here . Don’t be in the slightest vague on issues when there is a lack of real right wing trolls in the thread . You will draw out the left wing loonies looking for raw meat.

  32. Concerned Conservative says:

KillCon, no question that tax breaks for Hummers is a joke. But Hummers represent a very small percentage of the SUVs/trucks that get low mileage. You really have to make it painful for all the SUV/truck owners if you are going to make a dent in the oil problem in the short run. Good luck telling all the self-employed contractors that their tax break just went away on their truck — that’s a tough one come election time…

  51. KillCon2005 says:

    I love this part.

Now it is true that I believe this country is following a dangerous trend when it permits too great a degree of centralization of governmental functions. I oppose this–in some instances the fight is a rather desperate one. But to attain any success it is quite clear that the Federal government cannot avoid or escape responsibilities which the mass of the people firmly believe should be undertaken by it. The political processes of our country are such that if a rule of reason is not applied in this effort, we will lose everything–even to a possible and drastic change in the Constitution. This is what I mean by my constant insistence upon “moderation” in government. Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas.5 Their number is negligible and they are stupid.

I also think he would be opposed to Roberts on the SCOTUS and hate the idiots at Justice sunday.

  55. Mikey says:

“…in the 1970s, you see, big, heavy vehicles for personal use – like SUVs and Hummers — didn’t exist…”

I’m not arguing the point of your post but in reality, most cars in the 70’s were big, heavy vehicles that got under 15 MPG.

The fact that the Bush administration does not impose tougher fuel efficiency standards on ALL vehicles is appalling, and the tax loopholes on those useless hummer vehicles needs to be closed immediately. People who buy them are idiots who have bought into the BS marketing. What they don’t realize that 1) they aren’t Humvee’s (as pointed out in an earler post) and 2) they are based on the same chassis as a chevy suburban, with cheap to manufacture, ugly, flat body panels. So congratulations hummer owners, you just bought a glorified suburban, manufactured for the sole purpose of tricking sheep like you into buying a ridiculously overpriced, obscenely profitable, status symbol.

  56. Concerned conservative says:

KillCon, I read the paper. It sounded like the words of a moderate conservative. I’m not far from his philosophy — but a bit more on the free market / libertarian end of the spectrum. I don’t like Bush in terms of his big government approach — too invasive and trying to micromanage an economy that is too big to be micromanaged in my book.

  60. Concerned Conservative says:

  61. KillCon2005 says:

    C C,

There are radical whackos running this country. There are radical whackos here doing whatever they can to confuse, mislead, and rewrite history and our constitution. They are not conservatives, but have hijacked that cause and ideal, and the GOP as well.

Republican mainstream unhappiness with the Birchers intensified after Welch circulated a letter calling President Dwight D. Eisenhower a “conscious, dedicated agent of the Communist Conspiracy.” Welch went further in a book titled The Politician, written in 1956 and published by the JBS in 1963, which declared that Eisenhower’s brother Milton was Ike’s superior within the Communist apparatus and alleging that other top government officials were also communist tools, including “ex president Truman and Roosevelt, and the last Sec. Of State John Foster Dulles and former CIA Director Allan W. Dulles.” Conservative writer William F. Buckley, Jr., an early friend and admirer of Welch, regarded his accusations against Eisenhower as “paranoid and idiotic libels” and attempted unsuccessfully to purge Welch from the JBS. Welch responded by attempting to take over Young Americans for Freedom, a conservative youth organization founded with assistance from Buckley.

There is even an edit war going on at Wiki over the entry on JBS. If you are truly a loyal, conservative American, you will fight to take your party and cause back from them.

  62. KillCon2005 says:

Sound familiar? That short passage from Wiki? I will try to find Ike’s kid’s letter for you.

  63. KillCon2005 says:

C C, from here on out I will accept you as a truly a concerned conservative. You should be concerned. Some of us were just more concerned sooner, but better late the never. Welcome.

I do tend to the dramatic from time to time. I also think extremist wackos running the country falls under the purview of the oath one takes swearing to “defend the constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”

  64. Concerned Conservative says:

    KillCon,

I always thought the JBS was pretty far out there, seeing conspiracy when it wasn’t there, overusing hyperbole, etc.

“Buy beleaguered, overworked White House aides enough drinks and they tell a sordid tale of an administration under siege, beset by bitter staff infighting and led by a man whose mood swings suggest paranoia bordering on schizophrenia. They describe a President whose public persona masks an angry, obscenity-spouting man who berates staff, unleashes tirades against those who disagree with him and ends meetings in the Oval Office with ‘Get out of here!’

In fact, George W. Bush’s mood swings have become so drastic that White House emails often contain ‘weather reports’ to warn of the President’s demeanor. ‘Calm seas’ means Bush is calm while ‘tornado alert’ is a warning that he is pissed at the world.

Decreasing job approval ratings and increased criticism within his own party drives the President’s paranoia even higher. Bush, in a meeting with senior advisors, called Senator Majority Leader Bill Frist a ‘god-damned traitor’ for opposing him on stem-cell research. ‘There’s real concern in the West Wing that the President is losing it,’ a high-level aide told me recently.

‘I was really very unsettled by him and I started watching everything he did and reading what he wrote and watching him on videotape. I felt he was disturbed,’ (psychiatrist) Dr. Justin Frank said. ‘He fits the profile of a former drinker whose alcoholism has been arrested but not treated.’ Dr. Frank’s conclusions have been praised by other prominent psychiatrists, including Dr. James Grotstein, Professor at UCLA Medical Center, and Dr. Irvin Yalom, MD, Professor Emeritus at Stanford University Medical School.”

  69. Mr. Evil says:

Probably most people will disagree with me but, I don’t put much value, if any at all, on the labels ‘conservative’ or ‘liberal’ or most any others. I prefer human, American.
Is Tom DeLay a true conservative when he takes gifts and lobbyists money to take lavish trips and eat in the finest restaurants all over the world? What about the ‘conservatives’ that like to have kinky sex while wearing diapers and calling whomever they are with “mommy”? Is it ‘liberal’ to be so politically correct that you almost have to rewrite the English language to talk about any subject without being scolded?
Lots of people like to live their life on whatever label is popular at the time. They just like to hang on to the coattails of the winning team of the moment.
I believe most of the people who take the time to post to this blog (and all others similar) are intelligent and passionate about life and just want the ability to be treated fairly in the workplace and to progress throughout their lives to benefit themselves, their children and family.
Those who sacrifice their ability to reason and to accept whether something within our government is simply wrong become automatons and you can see that today most anywhere you turn.
Our country and it’s freedoms are being destroyed from within by people (neocons) who will stop at nothing to make you paranoid so they can initiate their real plan to make the U.S. a country of elites and servants. Good-bye middle class. Why do you think that the present administration does virtually nothing to combat illegal immigration primarily from Mexico? Cheap labor for all the jobs that cannot be outsourced to India or China.
Our founding fathers had immense vision for this country and it’s future, but, sadly, no one person or group can predict the future. They weren’t perfect people either, but they knew they had a grand opportunity to build something special based on individual freedoms basically unknown on this planet up to that time. Does any one of you want to sacrifice your freedoms bit by bit until they are virtually a thing of the past? I won’t live in manufactured fear and I’m willing to bet most of you won’t either.
So ask yourselves a question; will you still call yourselves ‘conservative republicans’ or ‘liberal democrats’ when the only job you or your children can get is one in the service industry… beholden to the elites? In other words, second class citizens.
    Not me.

Makes you wonder what Bush’s ‘ism’ is.

    Navy Vet-
I heard there wasn’t a oil shortage, but that there aren’t enough refineries to process it. It seems we haven’t built a refinery in this country for 20 years. There are rumors that Eastport, Maine is having a oil refinery built there, as it’s on the coast.

Speaking of Maine, I’d like to mention some of our states that go through winters of 30 below zero, wind chill factors of 50 below. Howling northeasters, snow to the roofs of houses. What is happening to gas is happening to heating oil. It’s not a luxury, but a matter of life and death. You can best bet that this winter will have obits of alot of senior citizens and young children, the 2 most vulnerable groups.
