FLASHBACK: Rove on Getting Caught Lying

FLASHBACK: Rove on Getting Caught Lying

From the 8/18/98 Dallas Morning News:

The public can smell a phony, [Rove] said. For public officials caught lying, the apology must be honest and sincere. “It’s a question of authenticity and whether they seem to have a plausible reason” for lying, said Mr. Rove, who is Gov. George W. Bush’s chief political strategist. He said he was speaking only for himself on this matter.

Long term, lies by public officials erode public confidence in government and make it hard for all elected officials at all levels to govern, analysts noted.

“To the extent that there is already a high level of cynicism among the people, it does not make it any easier to lead,” Mr. Rove said.

Of course, that was before Rove repeatedly denied he had any involvement in the Valerie Plame leak. We are waiting for our “honest and sincere” apology.

“..whether they seem to have a plausible reason for lying..”

I guess Rove might have a “plausible reason” for lying: the truth will embolden terrorists maybe. Or it depends on what the word “involvement” means.

  2. Mack MacKenzie says:

Rove & Libby are just the tip of the iceberg.

  3. Elvis says:

    An apology won’t cut it.

  4. AboveTheClouds says:

Rove speaking about honesty and sincerity? What a laugh that is! I think the numerous and heinous lies of this Administration and Rove are not only leading to an erosion of public confidence, but a real loss in their ability to lead.
Because of the attack an occupation of Iraq–our position in the world has not improved, and Bush has not done anything to improve it. Our economy, foreign and domestic, has not been made better by the invasion of Iraq. Why did we attack and occupy Iraq? Bush’s administration was using the invasion to take taxpayers’ money and give it to political supporters. Plain and simple.

  5. Robert says:

“The public can smell a phony” – Perhaps not at first. With good marketing a phony (Rove + George Bush) can bamboozle the public for several years. But finally, after 6 years of George Bush (I’m counting campaign time in 1999/2000), the Public is finally catching to what an incredible fraud George W. Bush is – Faux Ranch, Faux Texan, Faux Business Career, Faux National Guard Service, Faux Regular Guy, Faux Leader.

  6. Citizen80203 says:

The comment of “It’s a question of authenticity and whether they seem to have a plausible reason” is typical Rovian logic. It’s ok to lie for plausal reasons? The problem is Rove lies as at any time for any reason. We only have to look at the administrations press releases for the last five years and dear leader’s campaigns to see the lies that are threaded in between the truth. However, treason is probably as god a reason as any.

  7. Concerned Conservative says:

News flash! Public official lies to American people! Stop the presses!

Please, people, is Rove really any worse than most? I have heard politicians and their staffs lie so much over my lifetime that I have come to expect it. I guess he is right about people becoming cynical…

Now, if he lies under oath to Fitzgerald he should go to jail.

  8. Mack MacKenzie says:

The lies must stop! Enough is enough! One lie leads to another to cover for the first lie, and then another and another… Rove is a LIAR.

  9. Now That's Progress says:

More Hypocrisy and Lies, plus Fun with Popes

Think Progress reaches back into history as well, for some good advice on lying for Karl Rove from, well, Karl Rove.

    * I like this thought at Interesting Times on criticism that Democrats are recruiting tough guys as candidates to look like a toug…

  10. bushit says:

Wow, Karl Rove lied, how about that. This utterly incompetent administration makes the Clinton White House look like a band of angels. Rove and Libby will go down, and when that happens, Bush will be made out to be the total jackass that he is.

  11. Jeanne says:

Con men always say that it’s ok to lie for plausible reasons. That’s how they operate. And then they convince you why they had to lie. And then they lie some more. And then they convince you that they had a plausilbe reason for lying and then they lie some more. And pretty soon the lies are part of the natural rhythm of the relationship and the person listening to it maybe believes it or maybe stops listening to it. If every thing is going good it’s ok.
When things start falling apart the people like Rove start saying they didn’t lie. They reason this away by believing it themselves. The “plausible” part of the lie was ok because it was said for a cause but was not said by him because he is just a cog in the machine. He repeated what he heard. Another part of it is, the person who Rove is when he lies and smears is a person he is forced to be for the good of the party or the campaign or the agenda. It’s not really who he is. He seperates himself.

  12. Jeanne says:

Is Rove really worse than most? Yes unless you are comparing him to the freaks that are in Congress right now. Is he worse than Tom DeLay. No. Is he worse than John Conyers? Please.

  13. KJ Lovell says:

Rove lies SO MUCH he has to have someone else call his dog!

You lied, whatever the reason, you resign. And that goes for the rest of the bunch too.

Oh my gosh! I have heard for years from the rightwing wing nuts that PRESIDENT Clinton “lied”.

You lie, WE IMPEACH or more appropriately, CHIMPEACH. Nixon had the class to resign, but that is something we have NEVER seen in this circus, so I totally expect that it will take something like the warden scene in Shawshank redemption to get the bozo out of the house.

  14. KJ Lovell says:

Also, the criticism has NOTHING to do with their ability to lead. Falling off of things, and onto things make it difficult to lead.

Cronie phony appointments and promotions make it difficult to lead.

GETTING CAUGHT in your illegal dealings make it difficult to lead.

What is it they say? LEAD, FOLLOW OR GET OUT OF THE WAY. We know they can’t lead, they won’t follow….so GET OUT OF THE WAY!

  15. Citizen80203 says:

    CC

You are right about many public officials lying. It’s not that Rove lies so much as what he lies about that make him unique. Take Anne Richards-Lesbian. Take the 2000 primaries against McCain-unbalanced, father of a illegitimate black child, wife a lesbian. Take 2000 election-Al gore invented the internet, exaggerates about everything. 2004-Kerry did not deserve medals, Kerry lied about Vietnam, Kerry French, ect ect.

The guy is beyond a fucking liar, he is the proto liar.
This is why we hate the fat fuck.

  16. Gary Kleppe says:

Please, people, is Rove really any worse than most?

Damn right he is. Remember when he planted a bug in his own candidate’s office so that people would think his candidate’s opponent had done it? Then there was the time he printed up a letter on his candidate’s opponent’s letterhead offering “free beer, free food, girls and a good time for nothing” at the opponent’s headquarters. Oh, and who can forget the phony poll questions to smear McCain in the ‘00 primary. If I remember right, he’d done the same to Ann Richards in Texas.

And that’s just the stuff we know about. Rove is probably the biggest dirtbag in politics. And that’s saying a lot.

  17. Zookeeper says:

No one in this administration will EVER apologize for anything they have done. Rove was just saying what the people needed to hear from him — that’s all he does, he doesn’t know how to do anything else. Rove can always find a plausible reason for lying — saving his/W’s a**.

  18. lucy, you have some esplainin' to do says:

    #7

So it’s no big deal for Rove to lie because “I have heard politicians and their staffs lie so much over my lifetime that I have come to expect it”. News Flash! The everyone-else-did-it tack is an excuse you hear from little children. Forget the country kiddo, you should first be concerned about what’s spinning around between your ears if you truly subscribe to that rationale.

  19. SJS says:

News flash! Public official lies to American people! Stop the presses!

    Comment by Concerned Conservative — August 18, 2005 @ 11:59 am

No true conservative would even ask questions about a President’s sex life, married or otherwise. Sure, they all lie, and it’s the one’s in office whose lies are at issue, but there’s a difference what they lie about. If you can’t see the difference, it’s because you are still more “conservative” (read right extremist) than concerned.

  20. Marie says:

You bet Rove is worse than most!
All politicians Lie, in that they fudge the truth, and the public expects that. Rove, a protoge’ of Lee Atwater, the guy who was an unethical, take-no-prisoners, morally deficient individual, (who by the way, made a death-bed confession of his sins)has taken the methods of Atwater and honed them to an unprecedented degree.
Rove is so ruthless, so cunning, so amoral, that some people were unable to see the depth of his ability, to the detriment of the nation.
I think the tide is turning (it’s about time), people are wising up, lies are too prevalent, the administration has lost credibility and I hope for the day that they are all forced to leave office in disgrace.

  21. Marie says:

Apology? It is not even in his vocabulary, as it applies to himself.

  22. Marie says:

#18, the Republican/conservtives are very interested in sexual habits of public and private citizens. Just look at what riles them.
There is something wrong with a political group that focuses so much energy on sexual behavior.

  23. Citizen80203 says:

I think we can all agree that thanks to Grover, Lee, and Karl politics in America have changed for the worst. Have they changed for the worst permanently? Do we need our own scum bags to smear our way to power? What is the alternative?

    Judd,

I’ve sent you a number of messages with no response or acknowledgement.

  25. Concerned Conservative says:

#18 SJS — why did you assume I was comparing Rove to Clinton lying about sex with Monica. I couldn’t care less about Bill Clinton lying about his sex life unless it interfered with his ability to perform his job — which it probably did a little bit. I was making a much broader condemnation on how lying, spinning and out right cutthroat politics have become the norm. On both sides.

#22 Citizen — I believe the politics of personal destruction really began with the confirmation hearings of Robert Bork. You know, fat Teddy calling him a racist and other dems digging up his X-rated video rentals. Oh wait, I thought it was the repugs who were opsessed with sexual habits.

  26. Blue State Red says:

Judd doesn’t link to the DSN article (not surprising, given the number of times he has been caught in blatant mischaracterizations), but from the date I imagine Rove was commenting on Bill Clinton’s dishonest and insincere apology for lying in the Lewinsky case.

It’s too bad for the “Impeach Bush” left that Clinton set such a low standard of acceptable behavior. After Clinton got a pass on committing perjury while in office, anything a president says while not under oath is beyond the reach of the impeachment power.

Clinton was fined by a federal judge and disbarred for lying. President Bush will never suffer any similar disgrace, because he has told the truth to the best of his ability.

  27. Concerned Conservative says:

    Right on BSR.

Also, I should have added in my post prior to yours that I DO care about Clinton lying while under oath in court about having sex with Monica. THAT is a felony, I believe.

Tis the same old bullshit kiddie excuse I called him on in #17. Why does he take this lame course? A) he literally has nothing better to offer, and B) he can’t agree with you because the pathology involved won’t permit it; he simply cannot acknowledge Conservative criminal behavior without appending a rationalization for it. What an embarassment this chimp-chump is.

  30. Concerned Conservative says:

“In all lies there is wheat among the chaff”

  31. KJ Lovell says:

So, let me get this right….

Clinton lied about screwing the help, and that’s NOT OK.

Rove lies everytime he opens his mouth. Dumb-ya lied us into a war to make money for his family and cronies, but that’s OK?

    Sex is bad……war is good…..

    need more input…..

I believe Clinton was trying to not drag the reugnican paid whore through the mud. He lied. HE SHOULD HAVE SAID SOMETHING LIKE THIS….

I believe that it is NONE of your business WHAT I DO WITH MY PRIVATE PARTS, TO WHOM, OR ON WHOM. GET OFF MY BACK AND go try YET ANOTHER WITCH HUNT.

I always believe you should use the words that people can understand, so

If you believe sex is bad – and treason is good….

    …GO FU****k YOURSELF……a quote from cheeney!

  32. lucy, you have some esplainin' to do says:

The same goes double for sad-sack Blue State Red in #25. How pathetic this current crop of conservative cannots are. Your masters are going down, clowns; stick around and watch the show. Then, when the Dems get back in we can pull them away from the helm and get this drifting ship of state back on course.

  33. KJ Lovell says:

Or, Clinton should have been more diplomatic…..

and shred the dress and the whore and anything that would HELP THE “INVESTIGATION”

or maybe he should have just CLASSIFIED THE WHOLE DAMN TOWN…..until 50 years after his death….. like….

    DUMB-YA

  34. Concerned Conservative says:

Lucy, actually I’m no great fan of “chimpy”, as you guys call him. My main point is I wish lying did not happen in politics but it does — on both sides. But it is not criminal behavior unless it is in court under oath. And as I said if Rove lies under oath to Fitzgerald — lock him up.

  35. KJ Lovell says:

Aw! now we have it on authority….

    If you lie under oath……..

    Is that so much like…..

“IF SOMEONE LEAKED THEY WOULD NO LONGER BE IN THIS ADMINISTRATION”

    UH, … I mean

if someone leaked and they got caught…..i mean if someone got caught… i mean if they go to prison….

    uh, get executed……..then i will fire them….

(can I get the banana now?)

  36. Concerned Conservative says:

    KJ,

Can’t find the meds today? I said it wasn’t the sex or even that he lied — it was that he lied UNDER OATH.

    Sheesh.

  37. Citizen80203 says:

    CC and Blue balls

Amazing that it all goes back to Clinton. Well, get over him and your homoerotic fantasies about him. He is out of office. As for your dear leader, telling the truth to the best of his ability, well he is chimp like in his simplicity, so I’ll give you that maybe he was told lies without complicity. But that still leaves him a chimp like simpleton, no way around that. Echoing the lies about WMD and throwing flowers is still lingering out here in America, and chimp boy seems to have a “credibility” problem.

  38. Blue State Red says:

Sorry, I automatically ignore crass insults and profanities. The debate’s the thing. See if you can keep up.

As for Clinton, maybe he should have said something else, but he didn’t. Given the choice, he chose to lie under oth – something of which President Bush never will be guilty.

George Bush’s alleged lies are a matter of opinion. Bill Clinton’s lies are a matter of record. Deal with it.

  39. KJ Lovell says:

    Wouldn’t the real question be…

Why would anyone give a crap what Clinton did with the REPUG-whore?

Why did we have that “open checkbook” for starr, and

Now we have Fitzgerald, who has a long uphill climb over the BS-WH, and even if TREASON happened,
if they “don’t lie under oath” it is

    OK….

so by your logic, is it a greater sin to Kill or sleep with someone’s wife?

Where do I get the 10 commandments score card? My bible doesn’t seem to have one…..

it certianly does not say anything about if I lie to God and am not under oath, that is OK>

  40. Gary Kleppe says:

#22 Citizen — I believe the politics of personal destruction really began with the confirmation hearings of Robert Bork.

Either you’ve a short memory, or a selective one. Does the name “Joseph McCarthy” ring any bells?

You know, fat Teddy calling him a racist

GOPer Arlen Specter said the same thing, as I recall. And actually I think the specific accusation was not racism, but of being pro-segregation. Accuracy is always nice, y’know.

and other dems digging up his X-rated video rentals.

Liar. That wasn’t Dems, it was a news outfit named City Paper, and the Democrats condemned the action.

Oh wait, I thought it was the repugs who were opsessed [SIC] with sexual habits.

No, but it is the Repugs who are such utter hypocrites that they’ll use any smear that they think can help them gain power.

  41. Citizen80203 says:

    Blue balls

Go somewhere else to suckle up. We really don’t care for your pathetic diatribes. You add nothing, you are mostly incoherent, childish with your attacks, then girl like with your retorts. Go post at Little green balls or the like.

  42. KJ Lovell says:

Which repug was it that had to say he was sorry for making racial slurs?

Oh, the one that raped the black maid and had a daughter.

Yep, it is ALL ABOUT SEX with them.

If you worry about other’s sex lives, YOU ARE THE ONE WITH THE PROBLEM!

  43. KJ Lovell says:

Still waiting to know if I lie to God and am not under oath if that is
OK also….. Just needing to know.

  44. Gary Kleppe says:

I said it wasn’t the sex or even that he lied — it was that he [Clinton] lied UNDER OATH.

Actually, he didn’t. His answer was truthful according to the precise definition of the terms as laid out in the question. In the legal profession this is known as a “perjury trap,” something that no reputable lawyer would stoop to doing. It’s why the GOP Inquisition’s charge wasn’t perjury, but rather contempt of Congress.

  45. KJ Lovell says:

Yep, Clinton uses some repug-quotes back on them during that “investigation” and it pissed them off…

    I LOVED IT…..

    BUT HE DIDN’T LIE!

concerned commie’s logic today just pushes that point.

hey, come on! Where do I get my 10-commandments score card? You have one obviously… share please do.

  46. KJ Lovell says:

    mommy…. there’s a reugnican under my bed

  47. KJ Lovell says:

    So to review…..

YOU CAN LIE AND COMMIT TREASON – that is OK.

IF YOU LIE “UNDER OATH” – not so OK.

What if you murder and lie about it, just not under oath….. – must be ok

  48. Jeanne says:

Was it ok to lie about Weapons of Mass Distruction?

  49. Blue State Red says:

History lesson: The Republican who fathered a daughter by a black woman was Strom Thurmond. He committed this dastardly deed when he was a segregationist Democrat (you know, like Robert Byrd). He found the courage to apologize and take responsibility when he was a Republican. We report, you decide.

  50. plo says:

yeah KJ, conservatives dont care if you lie and are not held accountable because you run congress. but lie about sex under oath? thats very bad.

  51. Blue State Red says:

Thanks #51 and #52. Imitation – even a poor one – is the sincerest form of flattery.

Ooooookay, you just pegged the stupidity meter. And after I went to all that trouble to cut in extra resistance to raise the scale.

    Here are two statements.

    1) “It was wrong to invade Bork’s privacy by publishing his video rental records.”

    2) “Bork is fit to serve on the highest court in the land.”

Stare at these for a long time. See if you can discern any difference between their logical implications. See if any sensible person could believe that one must imply the other. Feel free to go rent a sensible person if you don’t happen to have one handy.

  73. Jennty says:

So in their little narrow minds, those two statments ARE in fact the SAME statement.

Perhaps you shouldn’t. You may be too far gone. Even some of the wingnuts are concerned. But more concerned about losing power, as this BTC article points out.

    http://www.btcnews.com/btcnews/1077

You don’t really care about America, or Iraqis. You care about being made to look foolish, and suffering from the rising tide that will sweep you back to the extremist fringe from whence you came. It will get ugly. It will be painful. You and your kind have caused much pain. It’s your turn to suffer, and suffer you will.

  75. SJS says:

You must be joking. Become? Try always has been. You have extremists running the country. Clinton was a conservative Republican. A Democrat in name only. Once you get that, you might be normal again.

  76. SJS says:

All modern Democrats = Eisenhowerian conservative Republican moderates.

All GOP = Extremist wingnuts. Not conservative. Not even true Republicans.

Once you get that, you will know where we, and you, are.

THe Fascist rethugs are imploding and they know it. They have been caught lying us into an illegal war red handed, resulting in the deaths of 100,000+ innocent iraqis. They have bankrupted our country to make their buddies rich. They have made the entire world hate us. ANYONE who still supports Bush should be tried for treason. EVERYONE in the Bush administration should be tried for war crimes and locked up for life. EVERY law chimpy signed should be stricken from the books. Period.

History lesson: The Republican who fathered a daughter by a black woman was Strom Thurmond. He committed this dastardly deed when he was a segregationist Democrat (you know, like Robert Byrd). He found the courage to apologize and take responsibility when he was a Republican. We report, you decide.
