“Parliament announced it had no plans to meet Thursday night and no date for a future session, signaling Iraqi factions were failing to reach agreement on a new constitution before a self-imposed midnight target,” AP reports.
What are liberals so afraid of here? Why are they all hoping this process will fail and hang on to every setback as if it were the moment of truth, “Bush’s Failure”. When Iraq becomes the model and the first democracy in the Middle East, I won’t say I told you so!
Red, We are not hoping that the Iraqi process fails. We have simply been more realistic than the Bushies, who tried to reshape Iraq into an oil-rich puppet state for Halliburton, Bechtel, etc. etc.
Afraid that Bush turned Iraq into the world’s largest terrorist training camp; afraid terrorist training camps are operating in Pakistan, where the London bombers were trained; that our navy was attacked in Jordan; that bin Laden was never brought to justice; that democratic activists in Lebanon keep exploding; that any attempt to point this out results in our patriotism being called into question.
They have nothing better than to say we want failure. That is pathetic and you know it. We are merely saying I told you so. And we did. We are nation builders and you can’t force democracy on anyone – then it’s not democracy anymore. Are you people really that stupid?
Who’s building a nation here? We aren’t holding a gun to the constitution writers heads telling them how we want Iraq’s government to be formed. When Iraq does pass this constitution, would you be willing to give Bush any credit for freeing these people from a horrible dictator?
We should give Iraq our Constitution.
We’re not using it.
August 25th, 2005 at 11:16 amNow that’s funny.
August 25th, 2005 at 11:17 amAnd Chimpy and friends want a theocracy here,
August 25th, 2005 at 11:21 amso we can use theirs.
Very good, MisterB!
August 25th, 2005 at 12:12 pmA constitution is to terrorists as a garlic cross is to vampires.
Once the political process is complete (ahem), the Iraqi security forces (ahem) can carry around a copy of the constitution to ward off evil.
And, this is in no way simliar to Vietnam.

August 25th, 2005 at 12:45 pmDavid Brooks is upbeat about this whole situation, in today’s NY Times, “It’s not a problem if Iraq breaks up, only if it breaks up violently.”
Yes, David, let’s just hope Iraq doesn’t get violent.
