Jonah Goldberg: Sheehan’s Message ‘Resonates’ With Nazis

Jonah Goldberg just posted this on the National Review’s blog, the Corner:

GOOD FOR CINDY! She’s rallied the Nazis to her cause (obviously unintentionally, but it’s interesting how her message resonates in such quarters nonetheless).

Sheehan is a mother who lost her son in Iraq who has a principled, anti-war message. It’s not “interesting” that this message is being manipulated by neo-Nazis to advance their cause of white supremacy. It’s despicable.

Goldberg’s use of the phrase “obviously unintentionally” doesn’t absolve him of anything. He asserts without qualification that “her message” — and not a perversion thereof – appeals to Nazis.

This is the guy NPR chose to fill in for Daniel Shorr.

well, so much for npr… it was already starting to be cautious years ago when the conservatives came gunning for it and now that bushco has loaded the governance structure with party-loyal ideologues, it’s gonna be a rapid descent into fox-hood… sad… they used to be the one place you could turn in the msm…

and comparing cindy with the nazis and white supremacy…? abominable… reading the national vanguard site, the say this:

“In that spirit, this weekend a contingent of pro-White protestors including Stormfront.org participants and National Vanguard members have joined Cindy Sheehan in Crawford to show our solidarity with her opposition to this Zionist war.”

what’s even more despicable than jonah goldberg is white supremacists seeing cindy sheehan as advocating their hateful cause…

  2. KJ Lovell says:

    Nazi’s taking up Sheehans cause?

ALL the news reports I have seen indicate these white supremists are PRO SHRUB!

Goes to show that you can’t trust everything the “news” or WH says, so get your hip boots on and figure things out yourself.

  3. loganme says:

To me this is just a sign of the far-right’s dishonesty and lack of comprehension of nuance in their arguments. Jonah Goldberg says that Sheehan’s message resonates with neo-Nazis, but if you RTFA you realize that they don’t resonate with her message but are against a war designed and propogated by neo-cons, not because it’s bad policy, but because neo-con = jew and these assholes are bigots.

  4. Ancient Purple says:

I see Jonah is still refusing to support this war by signing up to go fight in Iraq to protect America.

Good show, Jonah. You win the “Coward of the Decade” Award.

    Kudos, you big lug.

  5. Citizen80203 says:

Neo Nazi’s are despicable opportunists from the same mold as the Chaney-Rums-Rove cabal. They seize any and every opportunity to push their agenda into the mainstream, pushing their legitimacy upon the public like a heroin dealer seeking new addicts. Jonah Goldberg’s problem is the neo-con cabals track marks upon his own arm.

  8. spyder says:

Sometimes i wish i could generate just a tiny bit more compassion, so that i could actually feel a modicum of pity for those on the right, who so desperately need to deny their complicity in a period of US history that will be viewed, hell, is being viewed, as the most deplorable ever. Whatever their personal rationale about why the US needs to have insured the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis over the course of the last 14 years, and why the US needs to continue to slaughter its own future generations in an effort to forcibly control other populations, they will never admit they feel the anxiety. Instead, they produce endless ad hominem attacks, hoping against all hope, that the insane madness they are trying to avoid perceiving will actually go away.

Well maybe they can figure out how this hurricane is all the fault of those anti-war liberals living in the US; they can scatter more personal vindictive bile and continue to ignore what is so clearly obvious. That would make about as much sense as their unending, bitterly-attested support for destroying the planet for their own personal gain.

  9. simplefolk says:

Are the Fred Phelps’ of the world with Cindy Sheehan? They are just as far out there as these frickin’ nazi’s.

    Opportunists…the whole lot of them.

CIA, Nazis & the Republican Party

    A Fresh Look

    by Carla Binion

Investigative reporter Christopher Simpson says in BLOWBACK that after World War II, Nazi émigrés were given CIA subsidies to build a far-right-wing power base in the U.S. These Nazis assumed prominent positions in the Republican Party’s “ethnic outreach committees.” Simpson documents the fact that these Nazis did not come to America as individuals but as part of organized groups with fascist political agendas.

The Nazi agenda did not die along with Adolf Hitler. It moved toAmerica (or a part of it did) and joined the far right of the Republican Party. Simpson shows how the State Department and the CIA put high-ranking Nazis on the intelligence payroll “for their expertise in propaganda and psychological warfare,” among other purposes…

Journalist Russ Bellant (OLD NAZIS, THE NEW RIGHT, AND THE REPUBLICAN PARTY) shows that Laszlo Pasztor, a convicted Nazi war collaborator, built the Republican émigré network. Pasztor, who served as adviser to Republican Paul Weyrich, belonged to the Hungarian Arrow Cross, a group that helped liquidate Hungary’s Jews. Pasztor was founding chairman of the Republican Heritage Groups Council. Two months before the November 1988 presidential election, a small newspaper, Washington Jewish Week, disclosed that a coalition for the Bush campaign included a number of outspoken Nazis and anti-Semites. The article prompted six leaders of Bush’s coalition to resign.

According to Russ Bellant, Nazi collaborators involved in the Republican Party included:

    * Radi Slavoff, GOP Heritage Council’s executive director, and head of “Bulgarians for Bush.” Slavoff was a member of a Bulgarian fascist group, and he put together an event in Washington honoring Holocaust denier, Austin App.

    * Florian Galdau, director of GOP outreach efforts among Romanians, and head of “Romanians for Bush.” Galdau was once an Iron Guard recruiter, and he defended convicted Nazi war criminal Valerian Trifa.

    * Nicholas Nazarenko, leader of a Cossack GOP ethnic unit. Nazarenko was an ex-Waffen SS officer.

    * Method Balco, GOP activist. Balco organized yearly memorials for a Nazi puppet regime.

    * Walter Melianovich, head of the GOP’s Byelorussian unit. Melianovich worked closely with many Nazi groups.

    * Bohdan Fedorak, leader of “Ukrainians for Bush.” Fedorak headed a Nazi group involved in anti-Jewish wartime programs.

  16. Rotwang says:

Sorry, the “Nazis support Cindy Sheehan” meme is just legless from the get-go. Are we supposed to believe that the Skinheads are lefty terrorist appeasers who want just want to sit in on the harmony parts for “Joe Hill”? Not bloody likely.

Writers like Goldberg are fishing for any possible way to make Sheehan appear like a despicable flake. What they fail to understand is that, right now, more than half of Americans are beginning to think the same things she is.

All that aside, I frankly don’t care if Cindy Sheehan is an alien robot who covets Earth’s ammonia. As long as she continues to drive the Coward-in-Chief from one sputtering, inane sound bite to another, she’s doing God’s work in my eyes. Ironically, she’s “smoked him out of his hole”…and I hope she keeps him on the run.

  19. Bill says:

I always consider the “Nazi” comments to indicate that the writer has nothing of substance to say. Trust me, when they start throwing around baseless insults comparing the subject to Nazis, they are desperate.

As for Barry’s attempted sliming of Cindy Sheehan, what’s new? The White House spin machine functions solely to commit character assassination of political opponents.

  20. Adolph's razor says:

Regnery Press = Nazis. The Nazis and the right are one and the same. If they are supporting Sheehan, it’s specifically so the right can use that to attempt to discredit her. It doesn’t work this time. Barry is an idiot. Too bad Regnery and Swift Boat Kreigsmarine didn’t see Cindy coming. That little “movie” will flop.

Creeps like Barry are nauseating. They have nothing to say in defense of the moron-in-chief and his evil cabal, so they attack a middle-aged woman who wants to ask the MIC what is the noble cause for which her son died. To drag up unfounded and meaningless gossip is a sign of the depth of the hatred and meanness prevalent in the blind, brainwashed Repoublican Bush-lovers.

#22 – I’ll take a shot (no pun intended)at answering Cindy Sheehan’s question “what is the noble cause?” The noble cause is going after terrorists – whenever or wherever they are. Now before you start hysterically screeching, “THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF A 9/11 CONNECTION!!!!!!!” you might want to recall that Saddam WAS connected to funding suicide bombers in Israel – a true terrorist connection. Seems to me while rooting out the bastards in Afghanistan we might as well clean up the rest of the neighborhood. On an international level, where many “useful idiots” love to console themselves with the wide ranging usefulness of the UN, the UN Security Council was consulted (and months of warning was given) before the US policy to enforce cease fire conditions agreed to by the then-recognized government of Iraq. (Regardless of opinion, it was recognized through TWO administrations that Saddam Hussein was NOT in compliance with the terms he signed off on.) Must run – to wreak more havoc!!

  37. Brian says:

You’re kidding, right mighty? That ship has sailed.

THIS IS TOO FUNNY!! CONSERVATIVE PROTESTORS ASSAULTING EACH OTHER IN CRAWFORD!

    1) NEW FOX SHOW: “WHEN DITTOHEADS ATTACK REDNECKS”
“Ken Robinson, of Richardson, Texas, who described himself as a Vietnam veteran, was carrying a sign at a ‘You Don’t Speak for Me, Cindy!’ rally in Crawford. The sign read, ‘How to wreck your family in 30 days, by The Bitch in the Ditch Cindy Sheehan.’”

“Mr. Kristinn Taylor, an event organizer with (pro-Bush) FreeRepublic.com, heard about the (too extreme) sign and rushed up to Robinson. ‘This is our rally and you can’t do that here,’…Camera crews rushed in…Some of the crowd around Robinson came forward to shake his hand, while others chanted, ‘Idiot, go home.’…The two men then squared off and raised their voices. ‘Just get outta here!’ Robinson yelled, and AIMED A KICK AT TAYLOR’S MIDSECTION. Taylor called for security, and a young Woodway policeman quickly showed up…Robinson continued to protest loudly as police handcuffed him and led him away.”
    http://www.wacotrib.com/news/content/news/stories/2005/08/28/20050828wacarrests.html

    2) NEW FOX SHOW: “WHEN CHICKENHAWKS ATTACK HILLBILLIES”
“The pro-Bush, Crawford caravan was coordinated by Move America Forward…The crowd, which organizers said topped 3,000 but appeared closer to 1,500, chanted ‘Cindy, Go Home’ and compared her to Jane Fonda…In one heated moment, members of the pro-Bush crowd turned on what they MISTAKENLY thought were a group of anti-war protesters, CURSING THEM, THREATENING THEM, AND TEARING DOWN THEIR SIGNS. A police officer rushed the group to safety.”

Turns out the “anti-war” group was actually “The Protest Warriors,” a group of conservative extremists. Their signs said, in large block letters, “SAY NO TO WAR!” So the Bushies assaulted them. What the Bushies didn’t notice was the second message below, in smaller type, that said “Unless a Democrat is President.” The two sentences TOGETHER form an anti-Democrat message, but the overall effect was a botched, inadverdent message which appeared to say the OPPOSITE. So Bushies, reverting to their underlying psychopathic form, literally attacked members of their own team. Here’s a photo of the Bushies trashing the signs:

  39. Bob says:

Mighty….. as long as we’re in the neighborhood, why don’t we pay a visit to Saudi Arabia and a few of our oil rich friends? If you want to play the catch the terrorists game, jumping into Iraq was the wrong direction to go….. But, you know as does the rest of the world, that terrorists had nothing to do with bushco’s decision to attack a two bit dictator. It’s a shame that 1,800+ Americans have had to die to show the lack of insight, judgement, planning and good old common sense of this administration. This goofball president has taken the USA down a path that will not lead to anyting positive for the USA. So, screem and yell all you want about terrorists. . . the prez needs non-thinkers like you to keep his false hopes alive. The rest of us will calmly and rationally point out the daily lies and mis-steps of what is now be acknowledged as the worst presidency in the history of the USA. Quit an accomplishment for GWB, but then he’s never know about it since it will probably be in a newspaper.

  44. Robert says:

    Cindy Sheehan Connection With Nazi’s

Is this “hot off the press”?

One comment early on in this thread equates skin-head neo-Nazis with Nazis. This doesn’t fit for me. If anything, the skin-heads appear to me to be closer to proto-brown-shirt enablers.

There was another posting that hits the nail on the head. Operation Paperclip did bring Nazis into the U.S. after World War 2. These were primarily scientists who could contribute to the growing and vastly profitable military/industrial complex. The U.S. government also co-opted many pro-Nazi, German intelligence operatives, turning them into active American intelligence operatives in the “Cold War” against the Soviet empire.

Why did members of our government sponsor this policy?

Perhaps we should first ask another question: Who in our government sponsored this policy?

    W. Averil Harriman; the Dulles brothers; Prescott Bush. This short, parital list goes a long way in answering question No. 1. The fact is that these were the same people who supported the foundation of the German fascist party that became the scourge known as Nazi. These people were fascists themselves. After WW2, it was only natural to protect as many of the former German Nazis as possible and continue working to establishing the fascist state in America that had been their original intent.

During one of his political campaigns for President, George H. W. Bush had to do a fast two-step when the press learned and published the fact that a number of his backers in the Republican Party were former Nazis.

What we see taking place on the political scene in America is nothing new. The disturbing shift away from political discourse and toward the vitriolic “politics of personal destruction” is the public unmasking of an undercurrent that has existed in American politics that dates back to the 1930’s and even earlier. The hate-speak and Orwellian reframing of issues practiced by the talking heads of Rush Limbaugh’s ilk is indistinguishable from the propaganda spewed forth by Hitler’s minions in Germany in the period between the two world wars.

Is our current President bush a Nazi? Probably not. Is he a fascist? Yes. Is there any practical difference between a fascist and a Nazi? No, except the Nazis were the fascists my father and his brothers fought against in WW2, while the adherents of bush are the fascists I must fight today.

  45. yeranalyst says:

The world is a mixed up topsy turvy place. Sometimes my tinfoil hat starts to glow. I look at organizations like Stormfront a nazi outfit or white supremacist or whatever they refer to themselves as, and I wonder about the probability of such an outfit. They can’t believe that they are anymore than a fringe group, and are highly unlikely to become anything else. Their central tenet is that we (white people) must defend our blood line of noble European stock against the mongrelization of the Jews, blacks, anybody that is not white. Actually looking at some photos of this noble race, I think a little Downs syndrome must have crept in ( my apologies to those innocents that are so afflicted). They are a demented fringe group whose reason for going to Crawford TX is ostensibly to protest a war perpetrated by a Zionist cabal called the neo conservatives. The only accomplishment of their efforts is to discredit(unsuccessfully) Cindy Sheehan by association with the general idea of being opposed to the criminal war in Iraq.

Anyone with a remote inkling of the political spectrum of the United States can tell you that the Republican conservative movement is far more aligned with these brown shirts than the progressive peace movement.

This begs the question who really benefits from these thugs turning the war protest in Crawford into three ring circus. Who really benefits from the existence of these cretins generally. It would be interesting to investigate the deep background of these racist groups whose ideology and methodology are so repellent to the vast majority of Americans that they do not have a hope in hell of emerging from fringedom. Don’t get me wrong I think the majority of these people are ignorant psychopathic dyed in the wool racists and Nazis. I also believe that because of their hateful brand of extremism they could be attractive to anyone who wished manipulate and use them in a purposeful campaign of misdirection and disinformation. That is, they would make perfect Rovian foils. Or they could just as easily be used by the ADL or corporate war profiteers. As always one must ask who do these people and their behavior benefit in the world of realpolitik.
