From the sound of things, there are problems of coordination and communication among the various emergency personnel and agencies involved. Nagin seems to blame some communication breakdown for why the 17th street and canal levee wasn’t repaired. Does anyone know more about this? Who is calling the shots down there?
Justin – when you say “abandon,” do you mean evacuate? Or do you mean abandon, as in never return? They are extending the mandatory evacuation and bussing everyone out, but they plan to rebuild the city. And the emergency personnel, the Corps of Engineers, Nagin, and everyone else are working nonstop to stop what’s happening.
The human side of this tragedy is bound to have some heartwarming stories amidst the carnage, and glad to see these will be reported. But clearly, for the bigger picture, someone ought to be in charge and so far seems we don’t have that. Well, that’s Nagin’s version, but he is understandably and perhaps justifiably frustrated.
I heard that all attempts to seal the levee have failed… and if the water rises much more then the entire cities pump system will be unuseable… This is from the Toronto Star. So there’s still hope… just not a big window…
#8 – Greedy – that is what the reds are all about and that is all. They are supremely selfish and can only think about what they get and when. I’m so embarrassed.
The only thing good about all this is how its helping the stock market and big corporations—building supplies, energy companies, banking—all proving that without war and national disasters the Bush economy would be in a world of hurt.
Of course ! people are helping one another — it’s what most people do. Only the rich bastards like Bush who have never had to deal with adversity are above reacting with such compassion.
Big new’s report G.W. and Laura sent a check to help. No word how much and to whom. Nice gesture from one of the wealthiest famelies. So far that’s the only good thing I have heard about the Bushes in nearly 5 years. Of course lot’s of what they sent was our’s first, no matter, the south needs all the help we can muster. How about bringing all our troops home to help in this disaster and rebuilding. All of them, now.
Bush is really acting like a lame duck president!
Equipment and folks that could help in this emergency are in Iraq. FEMA should have been better prepared after 9/11 incident. I keep asking myself days following this disaster? Who the hell is in charge?
Maybe they will pay Haliburton another premium to “fix†the problem.

August 31st, 2005 at 11:45 amScott – from what I can tell from Nagin’s comments (as reported here http://www.cnn.com/2005/WEATHER/08/31/katrina.levees/index.html ) there is/was a plan but no one in position to execute it.
