Almost everyone appears to understand the need for sacrifice these days but President Bush.
The Washington Post notes that even the president of the American Petroleum Institute, Red Cavaney, is imploring Americans to use less of his product. “The impact of this devastating storm on oil and natural gas operations will be significant and protracted,†Caveney said. “Let us understand: This is not an easy thing.” His solution? “Right now would be a good time for everybody to sort of ramp up your energy conservation.”
The American Automobile Association has urged motorists to conserve fuel. Boston drivers are willing to heed the call. And even the president of an oil company acknowledges “conservation is going to be very important†and is urging people to change their consumption habits. Everyone understands the need for conservation during this trying time for our nation… except the President of the United States.
Despite a Drudge rumor yesterday that Bush may call for some sacrifice in his speech and urge Americans to reduce their demand, he instead attempted to ease fears about fuel supply. “Our citizens must understand this storm has disrupted the capacity to make gasoline and distribute gasoline,†Bush said.
Bush needs to take some cues from the Governor of North Carolina, Mike Easley. “I am asking all North Carolinians to conserve gas,†Easley said. “I am immediately suspending all non-essential state government travel. I am asking state employees to carpool wherever possible. I am also asking all our citizens to be smart about their fuel consumption.â€
UPDATE: On Good Morning America today, Bush said, “I would hope Americans conserve if given a choice.”
Yea, I heard the morning talking heads (radio) saying how gas is $6 a gallon in Georgia.
Could it be that bushco is talking out of both sides of their mouths? I mean, it is the energy compaines raking in catastrophe profits here. Who does bushco represent more than any other group in this country? Big Energy.
Time for a change from these idiots. They don’t seem to realize that there is more to the country than 1 group of Fat Cats.
September 1st, 2005 at 10:19 amWell I am a bit surprised. Not that Bush is slow to react but that others are stepping up. Energy conservation may well be a tiny bit of good to come out of Katrina. Let’s hope other officials see this as a step toward the future as Americans now have a chance to prove that conservation is good and can lead to less dependance on oil from the Middle East. It’s not what Bush wants but screw that dickhead.
September 1st, 2005 at 10:23 amStay the course, fight ‘em there, war on terra, what mommy? learnin’ is the basics, mission accomplished, what mommy?, last throes,HUH?,where’s my guitar?,what mommy?, stop looters,HUH?
September 1st, 2005 at 10:26 amWhat is it about George W. Bush that he can’t bring himself to ask the average American to do a little sacrificing?
September 1st, 2005 at 10:30 amActually on Good Morning Muuurka he said people should conserve but I’m sure he muttered it under his breath or said it in swahili or something.
September 1st, 2005 at 10:53 amGas is only $6 a gallon where people are outright gouging. In some places there is a guy out at the sign constantly changing numbers and people are swirling around in circles going from station to station as the prices change. Of course this results in fist fights and cops having to break up small riots because of the chaos this creates around the gas stations.
September 1st, 2005 at 10:55 amGee do you think the ruinator of California will call for those in his state to reduce their massive consumption of fossil fuels??? Naaaaaa, with the election coming up, and his desperate need for campaign cash(the $50 million isn’t enough at all) he will posture and pose as the Bushco rat he is, suggesting that CA citizens can purchase their way to support.
September 1st, 2005 at 11:44 amAirforce 1 burns 10,000+ of gas an HOUR!….+ motorcade and on and on. CONSERVE MR BUSH, CONSERVE
September 1st, 2005 at 12:04 pmNo, Bush hasn’t called for conservation, he’s issued an executive order lowering the environmental, clean air standards for gasoline.
September 1st, 2005 at 12:07 pmPlease see this Kos diary post in which fuel conservation as part of a general national sacrifice figures prominently.
September 1st, 2005 at 12:33 pmHigh prices mean more profits for oil industry…
September 1st, 2005 at 12:34 pmStep 1: tax cuts
September 1st, 2005 at 12:58 pmStep 2: …?
Step 3: profit!
And it’s not like we depend on oil for daily life… I mean we could totally say “That price is WAY too high, I’m not buying that!” and then drive to work. Too bad it’s not like that and we depend on oil for our livelihoods. This means that the oil companies can charge whatever they want, because they can and we have to pay it or lose our way of life.
September 1st, 2005 at 1:03 pmThey’re like a drug dealer increasing the price to an increasingly desperate addict.
September 1st, 2005 at 1:07 pmUPDATE: On Good Morning America today, Bush said, “I would hope Americans conserve if given a choice.â€
One would hope we had a choice.
September 1st, 2005 at 2:03 pmThis is the begining of the end of the cheap oil age. In 3-5 years $3 gas will look dirt cheap.
September 1st, 2005 at 10:58 pmIn Europe the are paying less then $6, most of it in taxes, so the governments can lower taxes and maintain the same price level and avoide a price shock.
Common sense will get us through some tough energy years to come. One less trip to 7-11. Turn your heat or AC way down or off when you are not at home. Carpool, if schedules don’t match up exactly, sit and read a book or have a beer. Here in Asheville, NC, many of our gas stations have been out since Wednesday. People are not panicing, just being smart. Traffic is about half what it usually is, parking lots are half full, I’m a delivery driver, staying home today.
September 2nd, 2005 at 9:49 am#12- I have finally figured out step two: destabilize oil producing nations.
Damned underpants gnomes make awful politicians.
September 2nd, 2005 at 5:55 pmBush missed a good chance to do what JFK did when he said in ten years we will send a man to moon and return. Dummy says we will do that again and if he will go and not come back I would be all for it. What he should have said we will start a program that in ten years we will be free from foreign oil. We will need engineers, scientest of all kind, chemiest, and dreamers, because we don’t know where the answer lies. In nucular, bio, hydrogen or what. There is an answer to the energy problem and we will find it. But I will not hold my breath until he does, not the oil man he is
September 23rd, 2005 at 5:47 pmConserve gas? Hell, we don’t have gas! The pumps in our community have been out since rita came through.
