Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, The Today Show, 9/1/05:
What we can do and what we have done is get ourselves to the utmost level of preparedness.
One of the things that came out of 9/11 in 2001 was an increased focus on getting ourselves ready to deal with all kinds of catastrophes. And while nobody can ever be completely prepared for an event of this horrible magnitude, I’d say we’re much better prepared than we’ve ever been.
Knight Ridder, 9/1/05:
Being prepared for a disaster is basic emergency management, disaster experts say.
For example, in the 1990s, in planning for a New Orleans nightmare scenario, the federal government figured it would pre-deploy nearby ships with pumps to remove water from the below-sea-level city and have hospital ships nearby, said James Lee Witt, who was FEMA director under President Clinton.Federal officials said a hospital ship would leave from Baltimore on Friday.
“These things need to be planned and prepared for; it just doesn’t look like it was,” said Witt, a former Arkansas disaster chief who won bipartisan praise on Capitol Hill during his tenure.
FEMA said some of its response teams were prepared.

Poor Judd - you have resorted to petty b*tchin at this point. That’s fine - your stupidity is the GOP’s best friend.
September 1st, 2005 at 10:32 amWhen you don’t have anything to say on the substance, attack the messenger.
September 1st, 2005 at 10:33 amYeah, what Shirtoff sed. Thats wut I think too.
September 1st, 2005 at 10:36 amI thought Progressives were filled with compassion. I don’t see much of that on this site. All I see is Bush bashing and alot of bitching. I don’t see how things would be any different under a President Gore or Kerry. You guys need to change the name from Think Progress to Bitch Progress because I have yet to hear about any new idea aimed at fixing society’s problems.
September 1st, 2005 at 10:39 amJudd - talk about attack. This site in one big attack dog against the Bush Administration.
What’s interesting is that the public hates you people more than they hate Bush. LOL!!! You have no power base because all you do is attack without proposing alternatives.
September 1st, 2005 at 10:43 amI’d like to dedicate this next number to my biggest fan, RED. Here goes:(Dueling Banjos)
September 1st, 2005 at 10:47 amThat’s telling them, Red, I’m with you. But correct me if I’m wrong, but does mentioning Gore and Kerry’s names mean we are no longer going to mention Clinton’s everytime something goes wrong?
September 1st, 2005 at 10:51 amJust like dangling the troops in front of the Iraqi insurgents with “bring it on” so they have done the same with the public by not finishing the levee projects, cutting budgets, sending national guard troops and equipment to Iraq, and being way too slow to respond in force etc. etc.
September 1st, 2005 at 10:52 amThis is streamlined Homeland Security? Looks like they are tangled in red tape, literally. Who will they blame?
Disgraceful.
Gopd save us if Chertoff thinks this absolute horrific mess has been “better prepared than we have ever been”…and whats with him spebnding time on national TV launching National Preparedness Month…where are his priorities

September 1st, 2005 at 11:01 amNED AND RED
Dont like the bitchin eh. Everyone just bashing Bush.
Listen assholes, this disaster lies at the feet of The Shrub and his administration. Since you are too frigging stupid to figure it out, I will let you know.
1. In 2002 Bush fired the man in the Corps of Engineers for asking for more money instead of a budget cut. Money was requested specifically for New Orleans.
2. In 2004 all work was halted on the dikes and levees projects in the New Orleans area for the first time in 37 years because of no funding. Progress was being made but halted by guess who, your buddy Bush.
3. Bush cut the FEMA budget and let them know that he was going to make changes. FEMA became demoralized because just the previous year Bush heaped praise on them for their Florida work.
Look before you leap folks, the life you save may be your own. I guess your ignorance is bliss.
September 1st, 2005 at 11:06 am#7
My point is this, each time democrats continue to attack the Bush administration or the GOP they fail. Look at Delay, Rove, etc. Without any new ideas on where to take the country, I guess thats all they have. Well, the public hates that a whole lot more than they hate Bush. Last year’s election should have taught you guys something. I guess it didn’t.
September 1st, 2005 at 11:07 amExcept that FEMA is being phased out! How much did knowledge of the impending implosion of FEMA lead to their reduced readiness to handle this crisis? How much did their move into DHS reduce their ability to continue to do their jobs? You can’t blame FEMA’s soon to not exist status on Congress but even if you do, it’s a REPUBLICAN run institution!
September 1st, 2005 at 11:09 amChertoff! The name actually means “of the Devil” in Russian.
September 1st, 2005 at 11:09 am#13 so if people hate “us” more than they hate bush then who do they like because the shrub’s approval rating just keeps going down and down…
September 1st, 2005 at 11:10 amNeD must be 12 and playing with his mom and dad’s computer. The mom that doesn’t hold him enough and the absentee dad. NeD is textbook. LOL - yeah, right. He ain’t laughing and we all know it. What’s the word…oh yeah…TRANSPARENT.
September 1st, 2005 at 11:13 amWithout any new ideas on where to take the country
You ignorant twit! Low taxes (no taxation without representation) and limited government were the original ideas of the liberals who founded this country. Exactly what ideas do conservatives have? Expanding government and debt and tax reductions on the rich during war time and a time of natural disasters? Go back into the bedroom and screw your mother, your sister, your mother, your sister. your mother, your sister… how do you refer to that poor girl your father molested just like you are doing?
September 1st, 2005 at 11:15 am“…Much better prepared…â€
This is all just Orwellian doublespeak. If they say it long enough, loud enough and the lazy, brain-dead corporate mainstream media blindly reports it, people will believe it. Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama are some of the poorest states in the country and they were solidly red in the last “election†which just goes to show how gullible people can be and how they can be talked into voting against their own best interest.
Let’s face it, the Bush regime hates poor people. They will do as little as possible and crow about every bag of ice they deliver like it was a gift from God himself. It won’t be until the effects of the increased gas prices and building supplies start hitting businesses that this administration will do anything substantial. Once Bush’s base, the corporations, start griping that no one is buying their made in China crap, $4 coffee and $140/month cable then this regime will kick into high gear. Until then, we are utterly alone without any vision or leadership let alone compassion from this illegitimate administration.
September 1st, 2005 at 11:16 amNED and Red,
We don’t hate George W. Bush, we just think (and it can be proven with facts) he’s the most incompetent President in US History.
September 1st, 2005 at 11:17 amLast year’s election should have taught you guys something. I guess it didn’t.
Sure it did: “He who votes decides nothing; he who counts the votes decides everything.”
Of course, that’s a lesson you’d probably rather we didn’t learn.
September 1st, 2005 at 11:18 amNobody cares what Red’s point is. As if he speaks for the public or even knows what they want. Again, all of these trolls are transparent and obvious. They don’t even believe the bull they write - it is just too stupid. Nice try, but very very ineffective here; much like your leader and mentor. It just ain’t sellin’ anymore.

There is no other way.
Gary - why are you such a liar? You have no proof the election was stolen. You need to come back to reality and realize that everyone hates the way you think. Maybe you should come up with a better argument than calling everyone chickenhawks that disagrees with you. We know that didn’t work well Kerry. (Of course, as far as I know, you never slandered the troops like he did).

September 1st, 2005 at 12:04 pmFuehrer Bush’s urban renewal plan for New Orleans
September 1st, 2005 at 12:05 pm- build unnecessary canals through poor neighborhoods like the MGO and the 17th st canal so rich people can move their yachts to the gulf quickly
- screw up the levees so they break
- syphon off local, state, and fema funds to homeland security and iraq
- pack people into the superdome and leave them to lie in their own feces
- keep telling people help is on the way
- get chertoff to babble on about watching for terrorists at DC train stations
- and after the poor in new orleans are dead or evacuated - start bulldozing and bring in the land speculators
Way back on Monday it was obvious to anyone with a brain (which leaves out republicans) that the superdome needed to be evacuated
here it is thursday and people are stewing in their own feces

September 1st, 2005 at 12:09 pmHow long has it taken NorCom to get to n.o. Two days ago they said they were on their way. After failing to protect us during 911, when NorCom didn’t respond at all, they are failing to respond again. They are consistent.
September 1st, 2005 at 12:10 pmWhen the going gets tough, Bush remains in Crawford then goes to a military audience to sell his lame medicare bs, then flies to DC with his dog, meets with high level flunkies the next day and then travels to n.o. on friday. Meanwhile people are dying, infants have no water, children are being raped in the superdome.
September 1st, 2005 at 12:13 pmYou BUsh apologists are sick.
Problem is fishboy, we don’t want to debate your kind, we want you to leave so adults can post. Trolls like you add nothing and have nothing but platitudes to offer. Dear leader and the republican party are going down, and you can not even defend them with logical arguments. Go away fishboy.
September 1st, 2005 at 12:14 pmWhat’s the difference between Katrina and Bush?
Katrina is the greatest natural disaster to hit the US
Bush is the greatest unnatural disaster to hit the US
In just a few short years he has taken us into an unnecessary illegal war, drained the surplus, syphoned off billions to the rich, halliburton, military industrial complex, begun the dismantling of medicare and social security, unbelievable
September 1st, 2005 at 12:18 pmAnd now, enfeebled FEMA, thanks to BUSH, is unable to respond except to keep saying ‘help is on the way’ ‘help is on the way’
September 1st, 2005 at 12:18 pmCMW - you Bush haters are sick. What’s the difference between you and me - my party has every branch of govt and your’s doesn’t. Scumbag.
September 1st, 2005 at 12:19 pmNortheast - this is a serious point. Really. Federal spending decision to allocate LESS money to NO to maintain its levees has made this tragedy worse.
Why is there less money? Tax cuts and costly foreign wars.
What you now see in New Atlantis is a direct consequence of what happens when the Federal government starts cutting expediture - critical projects like flood defenses get forgotten.
Later we rethink priorities, but now is the time for the prime-time patriots to open their wallets and sent those tax returns to the people in LA and MI that really need it. No excuses. Put up or shut up.
September 1st, 2005 at 12:21 pmnoreaster - you’re a big wind

September 1st, 2005 at 12:30 pmCome on, how could Bush have known we needed hurricane protection when the science on global warming is still in dispute?
September 1st, 2005 at 12:46 pm#44 - what, the state of La cannot increase spending to secure the levee. Not everything is Bush’s fault people - you need to start realizing that.
CMW - for 30 years, the left wing has been on the wrong side of every foreign policy decision in this country. You people have evolved from commie to terrorist sympathiszers. You have ruined this country - you beleive in nothing except yourself and you HATE America.
September 1st, 2005 at 12:47 pmNortheasternDumbo,
You mean your party STOLE all 3 branches of government through rigged elections, rigged equipment, enethical tactics, and a general disregard for the principles of representative democracy. You’re correct they are a different party, but they clearly represent your selfish, dimwitted view of fascism…
September 1st, 2005 at 12:48 pmDoes Holland make Amsterdam pay for its dikes out of local taxes? Is Venice responsible for its own protection? Does Italy slash the Venice water protection budget?
Actually, that is the way Bush ran Texas. No state income tax to satisfy his base. But localities have to fund everything with property and sales taxes, which are ridiculously high from what I hear.
The Republican motto: let someone else pay for it.
September 1st, 2005 at 12:56 pmAnd Texas has a system of toll roads that would make Europe blush.
September 1st, 2005 at 12:57 pmTrolls are bloated viral bags, bursting their rightwing viral load upon us with the same intelligence as a virus.
“You people have evolved from commie to terrorist sympathiszers”, “my party has every branch of govt and your’s doesn’t. Scumbag”, ” You guys need to change the name from Think Progress to Bitch Progress because I have yet to hear about any new idea aimed at fixing society’s problems”, and of course “You have no power base because all you do is attack without proposing alternatives”
So many labels for these virus bags come to mind, but why try and label losers. Their words speak for themselves. May they just bleed out muttering incoherencies, then go still in 2006.
September 1st, 2005 at 1:09 pmRyan,
You should know better than to say the elections were stolen. I want to see any evidence (actual proven evidence) that they were stolen. I voted in Ohio last year. I did not see one scrap of voter fraud. There were thousands of lawyers and overseers watching the elections. How could they have missed the fraud? There has been no mention in the MSM. Get it? There is no story. Never was. Never will be. Or you can just keep telling yourself, election was stolen, nothing wrong my party or what they stand for. You guys need to wake up to reality.
September 1st, 2005 at 2:18 pmSo many labels for these virus bags come to mind, but why try and label losers. Their words speak for themselves. May they just bleed out muttering incoherencies, then go still in 2006.
Losers? Again, who lost the last election?
September 1st, 2005 at 2:20 pmRyan - hope Bush continues to keep stealing elections. Then, we pack up the Supreme Court with hard right judges and make sure they never let the GOP lose again. IN your world Ryan, there is no hope for you.
September 1st, 2005 at 2:25 pmNoreaster
September 1st, 2005 at 2:43 pmYou’re a fascist. You hate america. you are the terrorist.
CMW - not quite. I don’t sympathize with terrorists at Gitmo and slander the troops on a daily basis. Also, I love American culture, I prefer Christianity to fanatical Islam (unlike most of you here who hate Christians). AND I love the President. He’s a swell guy.
September 1st, 2005 at 2:51 pmNED’s right. All those people stuck in the Dome and those others that didn’t have a car to escape Katrina should have spent all thier own money on the dumb ass levee. It’s not the government’s problem. I’m starting to see things the way NED sees them. Thanks NED
September 1st, 2005 at 3:15 pmI’m with Northeast Dilemma here. But correct me if I’m wrong, but did you notice how much…shorter… Junior was between his dad and Bill Clinton during the press conference today? Him being a swell guy, NED, and I certainly agree with you there, lets me and you and Red show our support by getting him some platform shoes, OK?
September 1st, 2005 at 3:38 pmChertoff is part of the problem. Since Bush authorized Chertoff and Homeland Security to oversee FEMA, the agency is completely bogged down in red tape. The former president of FEMA blasted Bush and Chertoff yesterday. As far as foreign aid goes, Bush and the neocons don’t want the public to know how imcompetent they are so they have refused all help. Of course the rightwing media will not report this. In fact, FOX and MSNBC have been accusing and complaining about lack of help and sympathy. As usual, they are wrong. They only care about instilling fear, hate, and racism.
Being kept from these American people also by their Military Rulers have been the uncounted offers of assistance from Nations all around the world, including: Venezuela has offered their Medical Airlift Command for the evacuation of peoples trapped in these devastated regions; Holland has offered the resources of their Public Works Ministry (and who are the acknowledged World Experts for below sea level water evacuation procedures); Russia has offered over 100,000 temporary living structures, along with Military Personal to assist their American counterparts; Iran has offered 1 Billion US Dollars in immediate assistance and guaranteed 5,000,000 barrels of oil at $35.00 US Dollars; China has offered their Military Rescue Forces (Who are acknowledged as one of the best in the world for rescuing peoples in flood ravaged areas.)
All of these offers, and more, the Military Leaders of the United States have declined, and for the their previously stated reason: “The United States Government and its People Respectfully Decline your offer of assistance and refer you to our previous State Department Bulletin (NCO:13788) in which we had stated that this remains an internal action.â€
September 1st, 2005 at 3:47 pmI just can’t resist a comment to Northeast Dilemma and all the rest of the extreme radical right wingers on this blog. When one group dominates by any means possible the majority and all free people loose, it is apparent we then become a controled, dictated to, society. Balance and freedom for all the people can not be achieved when our officials are only concerned with their own power and wealth. Again I will not confuse you with the fact’s, since your mind’s are made up but let me tell you youngsters, I have lived much longer than most of you and our country is in one hell of a mess and it all started the day after Bush took office. His ajenda is not that of the american people. Revenge against Iraq and the American poor and middle class is the Bush ajenda. Now in response to all your mean spirited comments towards all the lefties let me say they are just like spoiled children on a play ground. True at the present time you hold all the marbles, but lack the intelect and compassion for your fellow man to keep them forever and remember when you have all the marbles then the game is over. Who will do all the work the rich require to survive.? Who will buy all their stupid imports.? There are 2 thoughts that motivate the humin spirit, Love and Fear. We the people are fed up with the Fear based bunch and are about to take our marbles back. Finelly I ask all the rabid, radical, right are you prostitutes ( get paid for their services) or whores. Frankly I respect a prostitute more as they get paid by the job or word which may be the case of your posts.? Which is it.? If neither, how about some self education on your part and showing compasion for your fellow man. Bush is the devider…Impeach now…..Blessings…
September 1st, 2005 at 3:48 pmYeah liberals do suck… What good have they ever done for this country? what a terrible idea it was ending child labor! and the 5-day work weak, well I don’t think we’ll ever recover from that mis-step. Well we’ll soon be back to the good ol days of crushing poverty for the elderly, lynch mobs for them “uppity” blacks, and a burning cross on every lawn. Liberals, if y’all would just SHUT UP you’d see how everything is awesome in the country and everything that isn’t awesome is your fault.
And then I will kiss some snakes! I will hug and kiss some poisonous snakes!
Now THAT’s sarcasm!
September 1st, 2005 at 3:48 pm“Losers? Again, who lost the last election? ”
The American People lost the last election!! I ask you to do one thing - tell me something that Bush has done that helps the “little people” you know, those people that aren’t born with a silver spoon in their mouths (or noses, for that matter)
I can name you MANY MANY things that Bush has done to undermine the basic tenants of the “melting pot” that is the United States of America. And amazingly enough, I don’t have to use foul language or even denigrate the opposition. Bush is bad for this country - wake up and join the rest of the world. Check out Bush’s approval ratings - the US citizens are finally hearing the truth and are beginning to realize that Bush is either a liar or terribly misguided!
September 1st, 2005 at 3:48 pmoops, “work week” not “work weak”, duh…
September 1st, 2005 at 3:50 pmOle seventeen, the Bush bunch directed you here, from where.? They are paying you how much for each venemonious word.? Hummm I think your bunch are in their last throws of distruction. The louder you yell the more apparent we seem to be hitting your nerves. Don’t the radical right have their own blogs.? Why don’t you preach to your own choir, oh, I forgot, no pay there.
September 1st, 2005 at 4:36 pmNED the reason Bush is so despised here is because he and his actions are despicable. We do cite reasons however, and back them up with facts. You, however, simply attack the messengers. You must admit that he can’t blame this one on Clinton no matter how hard he (and you) might try. This is his disaster — his slashed funding — his total disregard for the poor and black (what the hell, they’re the Democrats in this red state, so they’re expendable).
September 1st, 2005 at 5:10 pmSo this is what they call “prepared”? Jeezuz I hate to think of what unprepared means to them.
September 1st, 2005 at 5:12 pmThey’ve had Homeland Security for years now — and this is the best they can do in an emergency?!

2 elections officials indicted in recount
Two Cuyahoga County elections officials were indicted Tuesday on charges of not handling ballots correctly during the recount of the 2004 presidential election.
Kathleen Dreamer, manager of the board’s ballot department, and the assistant manager, Rosie Grier, were each charged with six counts of failing to follow Ohio laws that spell out how ballots are selected and reviewed during a recount.
The most serious charges carry a maximum of 18 months in prison.
