Bush Acknowledges He’s Not On Top of Katrina Situation

President Bush speaking to reporters this morning:

We’ll get on top of this situation and we’re going to help the people that need help

The storm hit the Gulf Coast Monday. Why isn’t the Bush administration on top of the situation yet?

  1. wishing says:

Probably because his frat buddy is in charge of FEMA

  2. Vince says:

Man…let’s kick this prick while he is down….him and all his sycophants….POWER TO THE PEOPLE….let’s take this country back!!!!!!

  3. Jay says:

This is what happens when a boy is appointed to do a man’s job. So President Gomer is on his way to “the impacted area”, I’d be extremely surprised if he ventured into New Orleans on foot. The Secret Service presence would have to be extremely heavy, Bush has become a wanted man…errr boy.

  4. Darth Filibustrous says:

‘..In Washington, President Bush admitted “the results are not acceptable”…’

While he doesn’t say, “My response was not acceptable”, I think this is the closest he has come to admitting a mistake. If so, I’m pleasantly surprised. Or am I wrong about what exactly he’s saying?

  5. BUSH LUVER says:

I TELL YOU ALL YOU NEED TO DO TO PREVENT LOOTING DOWN THERE IS PUT A HELP WANTED SIGN IN YER WAL-MAT WINDOW. THAT WILL KEEP THEM OUT!

  6. bk says:

Just in case you were wondering where our leaders have been in this time of need…

  7. Mary Popsin says:

That’s because Bushie doesn’t care about the poor people in New Orlean’s. If they had the money to fund the leeves this would not of happen. You can hear how the Republican think. Look what the house speaker Dennis Hastert said the we should bulldoze the city.
He’s got his nerve we rebuild Florida every year. These are all the rich one in Florida. What do expect from a Republican.

  8. ex_enabler says:

If Bush had gone to AA instead of trying to cure himself with some right-wing preacher he would have learned some valuable lessons that might have prevented this disaster.

“California — I am a housewife with four children and have been a member of AA for five wonderful, rewarding months. At the time I went on my last binge I financed a bottle of whiskey with the money from my baby’s piggy bank, in which there was also a silver dollar given to him by a neighbor at his birth a year ago. I vowed when I got sober that I would replace that dollar somehow, some way. I was so ashamed. ”

  9. Lisa says:

Because short-term political gain, not long-term policies that make this country great, are what matters most to this administration.

  10. Tony says:

Man, I wish we had a source of oil we could tap to replace the temporary shortage…oh, that’s right, we’re not allowed to, thanks to the Dems. So no complaining about gas prices.

  11. David B says:

This is shameful in the greatest civilization the earth has known. There is a total lack of leadership and accountablity at the highest levels of our government. I know this is politically incorrect at this time, but I can’t help but wonder how the republican administration is working out for these 3 red states now?

  12. $hrub says:

OOPS! Sorry dead people. You did not die in vain. I’ll be ready next time, if I’m not on Vay K.

  13. Andrew says:

Are you talking about ANWAR? That oil field in Alaska it would take TEN YEARS to start getting oil out of? Yeah, let’s get right on that… Get your head out of the sand genius. Besides, GAS prices are up (now going BACK DOWN) because of REFINEMENT issues, not OIL SUPPLY.

  14. Keith H. says:

That’s right, I said it, the current efforts are unacceptable. That’s why I’m goin’ down there to straighten things out, get things back on track, just watch me, I am your hero.
    Signed,
    junior

  16. Athiest says:

” Dennis Hastert said the we should bulldoze the city.”

Actually, I wonder if that isn’t such a bad idea. Looking into the future, there may be more of these cat 5 storms. Would it be a) feasable to move the city to higher ground b) would the cost of rebuilding at a new location be about the same as rebuilding the existing location c) is that just a silly idea? I mean seriously, you could help prevent a desaster like this in the future and the opportunity to move out of harms way doesn’t really present itself very often.

Just trying to think outside the box.

  17. Government Insider says:

Atheist – You’re actually thinking very much inside the box. New Orleans is NOT going to be rebuilt. The decision is all but made.

  18. Andrew says:

I realize the cost of preventing something like this was very high ($20 billion?) and we’re running a budget deficit and all but how much will this cost us to clean up? What’s the effect on GDP (and therefore tax revenues) of having 500,000 people out of work for 6 months??? And we’re still being preached to about MORE TAX CUTS???

This administration has demonstrated a clear lack of vision and an unwillingness to demonstrate the capability to make difficult decisions. It’s time they just stepped aside and admitted defeat.

  19. Vince says:

Hope everyone saved their Bush tax cut for gas now….that man has VISION……see?
If only those impoversihed citizens of New Orleans used that money for inflatable rafts and MRE’s!!!!!
    Yes, rape the environment!

  20. Mary Popsin says:

#18 Explain yourself that they are not going to rebuild New Orleans. Who is making this decision?

  21. WaltTheMan says:

New Orleans must be rebuilt. It is a part of our American heritage. It’s but a single city – Germany reconstructed hundreds of monuments and cities fragment by fragment after WWII, they were not about to allow two millenia of history disappear forever. Certainly we owe this pearl of history and tradition to our descendents.

  22. cynical ex-hippie says:

Tony, people are dying and you’re worried about the price of filling up your gas tank? There is still gas at your local station. There is no water where many refugees are. Now is not the time to parody right wing stupidity.

And Bush’s solution, drilling ANWAR, is to increase world supply by 1% over ten years? Yeah, brilliant thinking there.

  23. Athiest says:

#22 I wouldn’t suggest actually bulldozing the city. You can save all the monuments and historical sites and protect those against future floods. That may cost less than protecting the whole thing. I can’t really say though, I’ve never been there so I have no idea of the locations of the historical sites.

I guess to me the idea of moving to higher ground (or safer in the case of other cities with other dangers) is certainly not practical for existing, unruined cities.

  24. KJ Lovell says:

So dumbya is quoted as saying “help those that need help”

For him to put it that way, I don’t have much faith that the poor will be taken care of.

  25. Government Insider says:

#21 – U.S. Congress decides how much Fed money will go into rebuilding. Fervent budget planning is underway. The business community and lobbyists are united in their preference to focus on rebuilding the refineries. General consensus is to build low income housing on higher ground, and encourage residents to permanently relocate.

If you have other ideas, I would encourage calling your Congressman now.

  26. Mark says:

As usual the response will be “it’s hardwork” and we’re making “progress”. Count the number of times that these phrases will be mentioned.

  27. Mary Popsin says:

#26 The hell with the dam refineries the people need to have their homes rebuild. Instead of giving our tax dollars to the Iraq war we should be taking care of our citizens in america. My point is we rebuild homes that are on the beach in Florida every year when they have hurricanes but we cann’t rebuild New Orleans.

I guess that Florida has a Republican Governor and he is Bushie brother and Louisiana has a Democrat governor that is how the Republican think. They are only for the Republicans that vote for them. The president is supposed to be for all american even if we do not agree with him. If the government would not vote on so much pork we would have money for real problems.

  28. Fred says:

Love the title here,”He’s not on top of Katrina”. NO, better; ” Katrina’s behind him with a strap-on”.

  29. Wills says:

Possibly it is because their religious beliefs tell them that it is not their place to help. Their kind of right wing religion is more suited to evolution (survival of the fittest)and individuralism (bootstrap theory) than to the New Testament message of Jesus. They like it that way because it is cheaper.

  30. cynical ex-hippie says:

The president is supposed to be for all american even if we do not agree with him.

Tell that to Karl Rove, he could use a good laugh.

  31. Linda says:

You bet I’m outraged over the handling of post-Katrina. But rather than give into ranting, I want some answers –
    (1) Why aren’t we using airdrops of news flyers (laminated, of course) to spread information to Katrina’s e victims – you know, like we did in WWII?
    (2) Why can’t we just airdrop plastic-wrapped newspapers?
    (3) Why aren’t we using bullhorns to communicate?
    (4) An old man in Mississippi was dehydrated and hungry. He could have gotten nourishment at a Red Cross station just one mile away. Unfortunately, he didn’t know it was there. Could a simple beach plane with a trailing message (Red Cross Help at **address**) have done the job?
    (5) Why do I keep hearing that the priority is for choppers to drop 3000-pound bags of sand onto broken levees in an already flooded city? Why isn’t the priority to drop 3000-pound bags of food, water, medicine, batteries, radios, and cheap B&W TVs?
    (6) Lastly, do Americans realize that Congress recently passed a $286-billion Highway Bill that includes $24 billion for 6,371 nonessential pork projects? How can I/we demand that this bill be repealed and rewritten so that its $24 billion ~ our tax dollars ~ can be spent on humanitarian aid instead? At least then we’d be channeling our outrage into something constructive!

  32. Laz says:

If we cannot even respond to a natural disaster we saw coming, what makes us believe the administration could react to a terrorist attack without warning? Four years after September 11 and we cannot respond to a crisis? What is going on in Washington?

  33. Mary Popsin says:

#32 I agree with what you are saying but we got a Republican congress. On less their is an outcry from the American people nothing will happen. There is alot of pork like the bridge that goes to nowhere in alaska.

  34. Marie says:

Bush has never been on “top” of anything except maybe his golf game. An utter failure. We must not let this issue fall from prominence. This is the beginning of the Bush reign.
Thomas Jefferson once said “…we will see this reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve…”

  35. Ryan Neat says:

    Laz,

We can’t expect this government to execute anything effectively – as they never have! The only thing the continue to do expertly is undermine the economy and the american traditions and values that made this country great!

  36. Marie says:

#35 eeks! I meant the beginning of the end of the Bush reign!

  37. jamahl says:

People, he was on vaction. HELLO!

  38. Steve says:

I hadn’t heard the term “first responders” prior to 9/11, but Bushie and friends promised to fund all first responders in every city of this country, that obviously never happened. We are no closer to handling major emergencies in this country today than we were almost 4 years to the day after 9/11. But you can hear the always present mantra now-the intelligence told us that there wasn’t a present danger to the survivors. Sounds like the “yellow cake” intelligence to me.

  39. Livin N OC says:

If a majority of people are gonna sit here and bash Bush about this and that, then why did people vote him into his second term?? Now wheather people like it or not he’s our leader for another 3 1/2 years. So maybe next time more people will educate themselves and VOTE! Vote for what they believe in and not vote by what other people tell to them or whatever reason they have.
