David Brooks: “This is the anti-9/11, just in terms of public confidence, when 9/11 happened Giuliani was right there and just as a public presence, forceful — no public presence like that now… Now we’ve been hit again in a different way; people feel lousy; people feel ashamed. … In part that is because of the failure of Bush to understand immediately the shame people felt.”
I saw him on PBS last night and I was shocked at his anger with Bush this week. I believe he thinks that this event will spell the end of the Republican reign.
September 3rd, 2005 at 4:16 pmI can only hope he is right — but what a price to pay.
Is David Brooks suggesting that the NO mayor is not there?
September 3rd, 2005 at 4:30 pmI only read the transcript (which I reccommend to all — PBS also has it availble in RealAudio). I think David’s anger is related to the statement by Wes Clark — “Where is the leadership?”. Bringing in supplies is critical but making the people confident that supplies are arriving, that the people will be aided… that’s a critical factor of leadership. And here, in the middle of this catastrophe, there’s this overall sense that our leaders are MIA. Where is the fury? A hug and a smile by Bush means nothing. HE should be furious — emotional and irrational and determined. He should be dynamic. And the Mayor of NO did that, but only on radio and in a sort of helpless manner. The fury of the storm needs to be responded to in kind with the fury of our determination to overcome its destruction and SOMEONE NEEDS TO VOICE THIS CONVINCINGLY.
September 3rd, 2005 at 4:40 pmSusan, Brooks wasnt criticizing NO mayor. I just posted the next line from his remarks — he calls out the president.
September 3rd, 2005 at 4:42 pmI wasnt sure. Thanks for that Admin. I know I heard the mayor cussing on Air America Radio the other day. He was madder than hell. (In case your wondering Air America bleeped)
September 3rd, 2005 at 4:48 pmI am going Mad over this! I find it amazing that we think about the leadership in 9/11 and we think Giuliani. He was there and he was genuine and he helped. We got Bush sitting in a classroom twiddling his fingers thinking of what the hell he is going to do. Now we have Gov. Blanco pulling in a great guy for the job that has experience in disaster relief and Bush has the guy that was accused of changing his National Gaurd records. He has no experience at all, I know all people have their first times, But the guy in charge of FEMA should have A LOT OF EXPERIENCE IN EVERYTHING! I feel really bad for those people and I am ashamed because I sit back and I know that the whole world is watching our country and saying “They can’t even take care of their own people!” Countries are probably wondering why they didn’t attack us while they had the chance. We dont have enough troops here, They are all in other countries fighting a war.
Last night I watched “Real Time with Bill Maher” and Anderson Cooper was on their and he said something along the lines of “They call it Advanced Planning…” The Transcript for this show is not yet posted. I am not sure on my memory but that is how I remember what he said.
September 3rd, 2005 at 4:54 pmA lot of people are throwing crap at the NO mayor, and it is unfair.
He could do aabsolutely nothing, he has to depend on State and Federal agencies.
Bush was on vacation and too busy presenting birthday cakes and playing his guitar.
Nero fiddled whil Rome burned. Bush guitasred while LA was hit by a disaster.
What a guy!
September 3rd, 2005 at 5:19 pmPablo is right on this one. The mayor is limited. Shit rolls down hill. The guy at the top is the first to blame, then his appointees, then the locals — this was way too much for local government — this is a federal matter.
September 3rd, 2005 at 5:21 pmAnd whats that FEMA guys name again? He’s blaming the victims because they chose to stay.
Since when does your rescuer pass judgement? I’ve had to have paramedics help me when I hurt my back. They didn’t lecture and blame me for playing volleyball. Volleyball was a choice.
September 3rd, 2005 at 5:28 pmOf course Bush supporters are going to blame the NO mayor, but the NO mayor had all his forces out from day one. A handful of cops can only do so much. The feds were slow.
September 3rd, 2005 at 5:44 pmI have always been critical of Brooks. He has consistently been another Bush mouthpiece on every screw-up since the beginning. BUT!! Friday on the NewsHour. I was shocked. we will have to see if he tones it down in the next few days. If Brooks can be turned, we all have hope.
BTW, remember Terri Schiavo? Bush hopped a plane in a serious jiffy on a weekend to sign emergency legislation … for one unfortunate soul who was going to die from dehydration. What about the 1000’s in NO??
September 3rd, 2005 at 5:51 pmIt’s funny. I always thought Brooks was
September 3rd, 2005 at 6:10 pmnot completely taken over by the dark side.
Mostly yes, but there was always something
that made me hold back on complete contempt.
Susan, one of the people being blamed by Bush supporters is Gov. Blanco, who requested help four days before Bush haulded butt back from vacation. This guy pulls another “My Pet Goat” and the Repugs and Faux News want to shift the blame away from him. Already they are screaming for us to quit doing the “blame game” or using this tragedy for political purposes, yet make sure that Bush, Trent Lott, and DeLay are cleaning up their image with plenty of photo ops and warm and fuzzy speeches.
What a bunch of hypocritical SOBs.
September 3rd, 2005 at 7:15 pmI do think, however, that it is high time for Pelosi and Dean to get off their asses, get on TV, or even get down there to show support for the victims, and stand with the governor of Louisiana and the Mayor of New Orleans before they become Bush’s scapegoats.
At least the Black Caucus was on the ball. Now where in the hell it the democratic leadership in all this? They need to take the lead here and show the country they can support and lead as good as the Repugs down there.
September 3rd, 2005 at 7:23 pmCouple things:
David Brooks said something along the lines of this must be how Mark Shields feels when David spoke of his anger. I hope everyone noted that David feels that these kinds of events are not just tipping points, but points of explosion. Will the American society wake up and realize that Bastard Bush sold them short years ago? It seems David feels this is the case.
The Dems have been allowing Bastard Bush to argue against himself for a very long time. With no one to argue against, Bush has stumbled dramatically. But in the case of NOLA, if the Dems don’t come forward with a strong plan with backing to rebuild and set things aright, I’ll bet the nation will be looking for its new Kingfisher. Dean could play this role nicely. Too bad Paul Wellstone is not longer with us. He could have played this role even better than Dean.
Whichever way this goes, its the Dem’s to win/loose/draw now.
September 3rd, 2005 at 7:31 pmAs if Bush even knows the meaning of the word “shame”.
