The “poor and black have been left behind” meme is now in full swing on CNN and MSNBC.
At one point Friday, the evacuation was interrupted briefly when school buses pulled up so some 700 guests and employees from the Hyatt Hotel could move to the head of the evacuation line — much to the amazement of those who had been crammed in the Superdome since last Sunday.
“How does this work? They (are) clean, they are dry, they get out ahead of us?” exclaimed Howard Blue, 22, who tried to get in their line. The National Guard blocked him as other guardsmen helped the well-dressed guests with their luggage.
Meanwhile, from one victim stuck in the Convention Center…
The people are so desperate that they’re doing anything they can think of to impress the authorities enough to bring some buses. These things include standing in single file lines with the eldery in front, women and children next; sweeping up the area and cleaning the windows and anything else that would show the people [they] are not barbarians.

September 3rd, 2005 at 10:56 amI live in Chicago and many people who live downtown do not own cars. It is very congested and costly to own a car. These are not poor people. They use public transportation like most big city dwellers.
If Chicago had to evacuate in a hurry, well off people would not make it as the public transportation system can only handle so many people. Try getting a cab when the airshow ends.
The difference between the folks in NO and Chicago is, the Chicago (except southsiders) people wouldn’t last 2 days, they have no endurance and have no coping skills. The people of NO have showed courage that my suburban yuppies can only dream of having.

I think there is something that is not being critiqued. While i agree that classism, racism, and militarism are part and parcel of the massive incompetence and failure of the “system” to properly and effectively interdict in this emergency, i do believe that a huge part of the issue is partisan political punishment. Since Bushco took office, they have punished their political enemies through the use of the budget. Democratic congressional districts, Democratic Senators, Democratic Governors—have all been attacked by the cutting of funds. A recent study of Congressional earmarks shows that many more billions have gone to GOP party loyalists and their corporate campaign financiers, than to Dems. Bush landed, with Haley Barbour, in a GOP stronghold in Mississippi. He flew over NOLA. The message has been clear: if you support us politically you get resources and attention; if you do not you will get less and less federal support. Combining the political appointments of incompetent managers of bureaucracies with their own arrogant white classist elitism and desire to destroy their political enemies reveals the depth of the issues that foment chaos and anarchy in the US.

Imagine the Repugs saying it was wrong for Bush to be off playing golf, in AZ, and later in CA for speeches to people who were not at the time in trouble. Yep. It’s true. Most noted that Bush’s misshandling of NOLA will cost him politically on the scale from 1 to 10 (with 10 being a melt down) at an 8 or a 9!!!
You should have heard what the very conservative David Brooks had to say on the topic. He sounded like he had moved to the far left! He said that he’s so angry right now that this must be how Mark Shields feels. Really an amazing show of strong emotion and rational thought poured out against the King George.

When done and every one rescued or accounted for I’m going to start marching to get every last one of our politicians no matter the party, who has aided and abeted these criminals, out of office and in jail. Most coastal communities (at least those with functioning governments) have a disaster evacuation plan in place that involves some sort of provision for actual evacuation. It is almost inconceivable that NO had no plan worthy of the name. I find it hard to blame Bush for that. I can blame him plenty for not getting relief in more quickly but the magnitude of the human suffering, at least in terms of the number of people stranded, lies directly at the feet of the City of New Oleans.

Our society gives clues to the system in place. We all have heard the saying “He has more money than god.” There is also an episode of the Simpsons where god meets Homer and says “I’m too old and rich for this.”
This is the system on earth because this is the system everywhere.
I don’t want to suggest the upper eschelons are evil and good is the fringe.
But they have made it abundantly clear that doing business with evil (disfavored) won’t help people. They say only good would have the ear, since evil is struggling for survival, and therefore only the favored could help.
The clues are there which companies are favored and which are disfavored, but they conceal it very hard because it is so crucial.
I offer an example of historical proportions:::
People point to Walmart and cry “anti-union”.
Unions enable disfavored people to live satisfactorly without addressing their disfavor. This way their family’s problems are never resolved. Without the union they would have to accept the heirarchy, their own inferiority.
Unions serve to empower.
Walmart is anti-union because they are good. They try to help people address and resolve their problems by creating an enviornment where there are fewer hurdles.
Media ridicule and lawsuits are creations to reinforce people’s belief that Walmart is evil in a subsegment of the indistry dominated by the middle and lower classes.
Low-cost disfavored Chinese labor is utilized by corporate america to maximize margins. They all do it. Only WalMart gets fingered because they are the ones who help, and those who seek to create confusion in the marketplace want to eliminate the vast middle class who have a real chance and instead stick with lower classes who may not work otherwise. So they dirty him up while allowing the others to appear clean.
The middle class is being deceived. They are being misled into the unfavored, and subsequently will have no assistance from their purchases with corporate america.
I believe the coining of the term “Uncle Sam” was a clue alluding to just this::Sam Walton and WalMart is one of few saviors of the peasant class.
Amercia is a country of castoffs, rejects. Italy sent its criminals. Malcontents.
Between the thrones, the klans and kindred, they “decided” who they didn’t want and acted, creating discontent and/or starvation.
