Tom DeLay: Response to Katrina a “Phenomenal Accomplishment”»

Speaking on the floor of the House an hour ago, Tom DeLay evaluated the response to Hurricane Katrina:

It’s easy to be a Monday morning quarterback, but you should have been in that control room where those people were making life and death decisions, people that stayed up and got no sleep and very little food for five to six days straight trying to make the right decisions to save people. What happens when we come up here? They point the finger. You didn’t make the right decision here. You didn’t take care of my aides there. You didn’t do this. You didn’t do that. The point is if you look at the big picture, it’s a phenomenal accomplishment by everybody involved. It’s unbelievable. I am constantly struck by where we are today just a little over a week from the worst catastrophe that this country has seen.

    Sadly, I was constantly struck by where we were just UNDER a week after the worst catastrophe this country has seen. Remember where that was? Inaction and negligence turned a natural disaster into a manmade catastrophe, with elderly dying in the streets, babies starving and thirsty. But as always, Republicans don’t want you to focus on what went wrong in the past. They only want you to forget about what they’ll do wrong in the future.

    The US can deliver a “smart” bomb on civilians in Iraq in under 40minutes. But the US can’t seem to deliver food, clothing, or aid to it’s own people in under a fortnight. :-(

    They are the epitomy of pure greed. They think about themselves first and that is the last thing we need in a politician. Those that want such power and need billions of dollars to be happy and successful are overcompensating for shortcomings. These types never are really “happy.” They feel they never have enough and there is always a void to fill.

    Well now, by my calculations it has been four plus years for this skel “ceo president” to get his response to anything ready. So far it has been excuses and colossal failure. Perhaps we are turning a corner in the amount of time it actually takes, just don’t hold your breath in the bathtub.

    Things seem to be coming together, but this, Stan, is in spite of FEMA, bush, cheney and delay.

    They are still screwing up so much it hurts to see it. Take Gulfport,MS for example. FEMA has directed truck load after truck load of water there. The cops cant cope with the situation, they have a small force.

    There is enough bottled water on the ground there to last the whole county for years to come. Other items, short, or out of them entirely.

    Oh yeah, FEMA ran by brown is a great, great organization.

I really must applaud this administration for not letting a little thing like allowing hospitals to run out of fuel get in the way of their political success.

    Look at FEMA. Became a good agency under Clinton.

    You people disgust me. I the wake of all that has happened, all you do is whine and complain. If the proper evacuation steps had been followed in the first place(using the cities buses to remove people), there would not have been as many people to try to save. But the president doesnt control that so lets not mention it. Or turning away food and water so the Superdome doesn’t draw more people. Oh wait, that was the states fault again, lets not mention that either.
    As for the efforts that have been taking place, we should be applauding, not complaining. The rescuers are people too. The equipment they use is not indestructable. Under a “manditory evacuation,” are they supposed to remain in the storm? They, like everyone else had to seek shelter. Then they had to return and get control of the situation, which should have been the local governments job. Oops, didn’t mean to say that.
    If President Bush himself had rescued half of the people in the Superdome the day after the storm, all you people would do is bitch about the other half having to wait.
    More help and perhaps ideas of how to better the situation is what is needed now. Not finger pointing. You people who fault Bush do so no matter how he reacted.

How about taking individual responsibility for your republican skel ideology? All else is “up or down”, “blame gaming”, and “flip flop”. So just do human kind right and go f**k yourselves!

    Not true, Charlie. There are medical teams across the country ready and waiting for FEMA to get their act together.

    It is you who disgust me. Bush waited days before doing anything. Forget the poor people and city buses. What about hospitals? Hospitals cannot be evacuated on short notice. They have to ride it out and rely on their own generators. They required fuel supplies after the storm. Fuel which should have come from FEMA, and never did. Patient depending on life support — including babies in incubators — died because of Brownie’s inaction. And Bush supporters have the gall to complain about criticism. As if criticism prevented the fuel from coming in.

    There is no excuse for allowing babies in incubators to die.

    And in spite of that, you still want to play this blame game. Why don’t you forget the blame, try and help out, like a lot of us are trying to help. But we can’t because FEMA is sloooooow organizing the help. So what do we do if FEMA is keeping us out? What do you suggest?

    When thousands of our own citizens die needlessly, and the lives of the living, the dead, and the dying in the aftermath of a disaster, are trivialized by politicians who ignore the fact that they have failed in their mission to serve the people, that is when things have gone too far.

    This is the point at which we must, as a nation, stand up and cry defiantly “This far, and no further”.

    This is the point when thousands of evacuees and millions of Americans must confront their leaders and say “enough”.

    This is when the “accountability moment”, the “Monica moment”, the “Plame game”, and the “blame game” must be met with realism.

    This is when the sound and the fury of a nation scorned through spin must take back the attention of the faux leaders.

    This is the point where those who have sown the wind must reap the whirlwind.

    In the words of Frederick Douglass, who presented the quote above, a few other pertinent quotes:

    I put my name on the FEMA volunteer list yesterday. Since the request wasn’t made of the hospital I work at until Tuesday of this week, I would like to suggest that FEMA recruit and organize emergency medical responders BEFORE the next catastrophic event.

    That just seems to make sense to me. The medical teams could have been in place a safe distance from the coastline on the day BEFORE the hurricane hit.

    It would require some planning and reasonable preparation. But, it isn’t outrageous to expect our government to use our taxes to plan and prepare. Is it?

    The Bush White House, if nothing else, is a marketing machine, a triumph of style over substance. In the summer of 2002, Bush Chief of Staff Andy Card admitted as much, declaring the time for selling the planned war with Iraq was not yet ripe, “from a marketing point of view, you don’t introduce new products in August.”

    Therein lies the problem for President Bush in the marketing of his administration’s abysmal response to hurricane Katrina. Bush has no product. Even worse, he has no pitch man, or worse still, pitch woman. In a nutshell, George W. Bush needs the Lisa Beamer of New Orleans. But sadly for President Bush, in New Orleans, the color of suffering - and heroism - is black.

    The American citizens did a phenomenal job. Our government failed.

    Our members of Congress also failed to exclude the victims from the new bankruptcy law. They have until Oct. 17th like everybody else. They can file in Baton Rouge. Too bad for most of the displaced Americans who are expected to pay car notes and mortgages, they are miles away from Baton Rouge.

    Many are stuck in DeLay country and they will get absolutely no relief or services. This decision to allow active duty military the exemption but not the disaster victims should just about seal the deal on a NEW CONGRESS.

    I’m using my radio show to let Congress know that no current member will be getting my vote in the future.

    A skel in loser-speak is synonymous with a troll.     This thread my dear is really not about DeLay and his Evil minions patting themselves on the back for a job well done. You should ignore the constant prattling about Bush hating Blacks. This thread like so many others on this site is about deflecting from the real story of the New Orleans disaster. The real story is a racial one. It’s very uncomfortable for me to discuss and absolutely forbidden by these fellow travelers you admire, so you know its got to be bad, and it is.

    The real story is about how in a modern American city a large portion of the black population went “jungle” on us. Dr. John Ray puts it this way and as usual doesn’t pull any punches:

    ” As soon as normal restraints were loosened large numbers of blacks completely ignored all laws and decencies and behaved like insensate beasts — looting, raping and even shooting at rescue helicopters. For troops to be sent in with “shoot to kill” orders against black gangs and looters in an American city is so extraordinary that it reveals how total was the breakdown of civility in post-hurricane NO.

    Given the fragility of civilized behavior among large numbers of blacks, it seems to me that this should be a wake-up call to Americans every bit as vivid as the 9/11 events were. Black criminality must now be targeted as relentlessly as the lawless Muslim regimes in Afghanistan and Iraq were. All criticism of “racial profiling” must stop. “Racial profiling” must in fact be stepped up if the large bestial section of the black population is to be put in the one place suitable for them — jail.”

    To those of you who are misinformed, undereducated, less worldly and those of you given to fits of uncontrollable sloppy sentimentality this may seem like a harsh judgment of a people who you’ve been taught to admire and emulate. But let’s face it kiddies, anyone that wasn’t born in the ghetto and owns a rap CD must be the product of public education and by default misinformed, undereducated and less worldly. Not to mention the fact that all their taste is in their mouth. In short, most of you don’t know shit from shitake.

    Plus, how many check cashing places are in your neighborhood? How many pawn shops? How many liquor stores?
    How many Barnes and Nobles are in the ghetto?

    Third, that “off the boat” analogy is bunk and I am frankly sick of hearing it. Your granddad may have been poor at Ellis island, but he didn’t suffer from the affliction of being black when he wakes up in the morning and black when he goes to bed.

    Did you ever hear of 40 acres and a mule? They never got any reparations for being enslaved for hundreds of years. Did you know that by the time southern blacks were permitted to enter the north to participate in the second industrial revolution, the market was inundated with Irish, Italian, and German immigrants? Did you know that you are more likely in your family’s second or third generation in America, ever hear “Irish Need Not Apply” like slogans when you go to find work?

    Meanwhile, blacks are in their 13th to 15th generation and are still treated like second class citizens in many aspects of american culture. You remember that when you tighten your grip on your knapsack when a black man gets on your elevator.

    Lastly, I’m white, I grew up in a black neighborhood and later a poor white neighborhood. I have heard all of that bunk all my life and I dispute it. Why can’t people who have never even had a black friend get past all of the lame excusses for their bigotry?

Lastly, research who was left without the means and therefore remained in the cities.

It’s not that common to find a person that’s lived to be “old” who has failed to see what is behind this “Progressive” movement and where it is leading our country. But then again there is that harridan Cindy Sheehan. She is certainly no spring chicken is she? She is absolutely heartless if not outright insane for using the memory of her slain hero son the way she has. Thank God she is last month’s news.
