$10 billion this quarter — the most any company has ever profited in a single quarter.

Imagine that. Well, I’m sure the one party republican skels will have to take more action, to improve this dismal profit margin.

  2. Jesus Christ God of WAR says:

Any link between this and the Energy Industry policies that Dick “Hung Like a Whale” Cheney wrote up behind closed doors five years ago? Any link between this and King George’s operating plan to invade Iraq and to drive oil costs at the pump as high as they could?

Nah. It’d never happen here in the Good ‘Ol USA, would it? :-(

The UN has ranked Norway as the most prosperous country in the world for the fifth year running.

The US, on the other hand, is turning into India – with very rich, very poor, and even a cast system of ‘untouchables’.

  5. Mikey says:

Bush’s “less taxes” philosophy relies on coporate responsibility right? So I expect some of that profit to be used to help Katrina victims. I’m sure they’re doing the right thing by cutting a check right now. Yeah, right.

Has anyone seen the latest BP commercials where they claim to be friends of the environment, blah, blah, blah. Has anyone from thinkprogress researched these claims? Just curious.

  6. brain-noogie says:

How horrible….sounds like they need another tax break.

FOX helping out the Oil Co.s:
On my local sleazy FOX radio news they have phoney phone calls that they try to pass off as real. The phoney “performer” caller (probably an intern) says “Quit whining about gas prices, just pay them like everyone else. No one is ripping you off, this is just supply and demand.”(as the show host pretends to interact with the caller with the initial question and a couple of yeas)
How do I know it is phoney ? They made the mistake of playing it twice in one morning (diff. host)and quickly cutting the call the 2nd time around when they realized,….. dead air…….. and said nothing about it. And it sounded staged. SCUM

From what I learned in World Civ is:

The number one catalyst for violent revolutions is to “redistribute wealth.”

The second greatest catalyst is to end political suppression of the majority by a minority.

This was demonstrated in our own revolution and those of France, Russia, and just about every other revolution known to man!

How much longer will the majority of Americans (below middle class) get tired of having their bones picked clean by corporate vultures who have invaded two of our three branches of govt???

Will you fight to regain your “equality” provided by our Bill of Rights? Will you risk everything to help return the Govt to the people?

Tough question, but one that will someday be asked of our kids/grandkids… if not ourselves!

  9. Zappatero says:

maybe they’ll dontate a bln. to help rebuild NO. That’s the least they could do – how much of their money came through the Gulf?

  10. Rotwang says:

So what’s your point? Responsible, well-run companies deserve to make a modest profit. That’s the miracle of free-market capitalism.

    Huh.

    Huh-huh.

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahhhhahhahhahahhah.

    Christ.

  11. Pablo in Mexico says:

And by republican law they have to tithe 10% to the RNC and all of the bushies.

No one in the MSM has looked into this at all but I know for a fact that our beloved prez has driven up the price of oil to assist his longhorn buddies.

You see, it was not profitable for them to pump oil until it got to about $40 a barrel. My good friends back there tell me that the prez is making them rich. You hear anything about this?

Hell no, and you wont either.

#5, 5 minutes with Google and I found that Exxon touted their Stanford Global Climate and Energy Project in their 2004 annual report. They have invested about $100m there. They have spent $39m on lobbying (to avoid paying MTBE cleanup among other things) since 1998. It has not yet (did you know this?) paid the $5 billion punitive damages awarded after the 1989 Exxon valdez spill. http://www.corpwatch.org/article.php?id=10454 In 16 years, they have earned enough on ROI by fighting the courts that it does not matter anymore.

And they have spent $8m on ‘think tanks’ that deny the impact of man and Co2 releases on the climate. http://www.motherjones.com/news/featurex/2005/05/exxon_chart.html

Alternative energy and Big Oil – IMO, the small amounts they spend on green energy is a fig leaf – hence the happy smiley commercials you see.

  13. James Prendergast says:

It goes to show you that exxon executives are smart business men being able to make that amount of profit selling snacks and sodas and cigarettes at their convienence stores. YEAH RIGHT THEY ARE RIPPING US OFF THEY ARE COMMITING CRIMES AGAINST SOCIETY AND THEYA ND THERE FAMILIES SHOULD PAY THE PIPER

  14. Marie says:

Maybe we should have a “tag day” for the oil companies. Gouging the public, raking in huge profits, they are the best friends of Bush and Cheney, and Delay. My momma used to say, you are known by the friends you keep. These robber barons are riding high now, but their armageddon is coming.

  15. wisedup says:

If you want to scare the oil companys just say:

“WINDFALL PROFITS TAX”….now who was it that did than in the past…hmmmm?

  16. cmw says:

Who’s that guy in the white shirt and what is he doing to Cheney. Does Cheney need constant stimulation to remain alert

  17. Hank says:

I wonder why the trolls are never around to defend the CHENEY/bush show when it is about the corporate ripoffs, lousy energy policy, and Reagan’s failed trickle-down theory. I guess it is even too sleazy even for them.

  18. Mikey says:

    From an XOM press release:

“ExxonMobil will provide a one-to-one match of individual contributions up to $50,000 made through December 31, 2005,…”

“This effort is in addition to the more than $7 million already committed by the company.”

Wow, $7,050,000! So that’s roughly 0.7 percent of their PROFIT for 3 months.

Here’s the number for Exxon Mobile Media Relations. Let them know how generous you think they are:

    ExxonMobil Media Relations, 972-444-1107

  19. The Sheeple says:

#14 “their armageddon is coming”. Marie, I wish I could be as optimistic, but when airlines and automakers are in bed with big oil and top ranking politicians, stopping this machine will be a huge endeavor. We’re in an exponential spiral of consuming and there’s nothing even trying to slow it down.

  20. cmw says:

    The revolution is coming.

  21. End on End » ExxonMobil’s Q3 Profits Expected to Exceed $10 Billion says:

[...] Came across a link on Think Progress, that points to a Boston Herald story on ExxonMobil’s Q3 profits, which are on track to exceed $10 billion. An amazing accomplishment, no doubt: That’s $110 million a day, and more net income than any company has ever made in a quarter. It’s also a stunning 69 percent increase over the same period a year ago and a 34 percent jump from the $7.6 billion Exxon made just last quarter. [...]

  22. cmw says:

If anyone bothered to actually listen to what Cheney was saying – he was talking about the difficulty of sorting out the federal govt paying for clearing of debris from private property. That was where he steered the question about cleanup. For him it was a matter of sorting out that the federal govt would not be paying for clearance of private land, unless of course it was privatized, then clearance could go ahead.

You have to listen for the code words people.

When they talk about the difficulties of using federal dollars, they’re not talking about spending those dollars on needy taxpayers, they’re talking about how best to syphon those dollars off to private corporations.

These past five years have made me somewhat schizophrenic — sometimes I am unrealistically hopeful and sometimes I am in the depths of despair. I look forward to reading this TP blog because there are so many smart people here who commiserate, who offer hope, cynicism, and humor, as well as some really sharp barbs for the trolls who slither in.

  24. A.B. Lagonda says:

Who can name the liberal congress members who are big investors in XOM? If you liberals would just stop using petroleum fuel the prices would drop like a lead zeppelin. Ever use public transportation or ride a bike? Ever heard of conservation? Reducing consumption, not bitchin and moanin, will lower your fuel bill and eventually lower prices.

  25. Stefan's Stuff says:

    Gas Prices!

Ok, After going on my Honeymoon, I’m catching up with all that went on in the world and I Fill up my car. I just spent $53 dollars filling up my car. 2 weeks ago, It was $40. 4 years…

  26. WaltTheMan says:

    Re:25
Do you mean that it was $40 every 4 years, or did you drive a cement truck back then?

  27. steve says:

I can`t believe the American public is not on the verge of a revolution against the American oil companies. In the 50`s and 60`s the motoring public complained about gasoline being so much higher than diesel and kerosene. The oil companies explained that gasoline had to be refined more and that was the reason. Automobile manufacturers started producing a lot more vehicles with diesel engines and the imports were offering diesels. Well the oil companies couldn`t stand to see a small reduction in their profits, so they just started raising the prices. The oil co`s offer no excuses anymore, they just keep on gouging the public and we stand for it. Just stop and think ” If the American public would unite and agree that we would not buy any Exxon product untill there prices dropped say 40% but we continued to buy from there compittors, how long do you think it would take? The oil companies cont. post record profits and our government stands by while they break our monopoly and price fixing laws. This is the sad truth and hopefully we will revolt or get a new government that will hold the oil companies accountable for there actions.
