If you show up to the “Freedom Walk”

– the Department of Defense event this Sunday commemorating the anniversary of 9/11 — without registering in advance you will be arrested.

  1. Ugh says:

Pettiford said officers would patrol to keep interlopers out because the Pentagon restricted the event in its permit application. “That is what their permit called for, so we have those fences to keep the public out.”

Can’t have the public participating in “Freedom.”

    Mmmmm…Freedom:

What’s unusual for an event on the Mall is the combination of fences, required preregistration and the threat of arrest.

But it must be secret freedom:

One restricted group will be the media, whose members will not be allowed to walk along the march route. Reporters and cameras are restricted to three enclosed areas along the route but are not permitted to walk alongside participants walking from the Pentagon, across the Memorial Bridge to the Mall.

  2. Iraq Veteran says:

The dead should not be used to bolster images, and clearly this is what is being done. Many can say things about me, but it does not matter…

I have lost relatives in Katrina, and the level of insensitivity is disgusting to witness. Freedom Walk? For whom? Iraq…Occupied, America…Destroyed, and Speech…Restricted…

There is a clear separation of common sense and truth between people of this country. I DO NOT subscribe to ANY political party, rather the best people for the job…

It seems to me, that ALL the current administration wants to do is put on a show. I for one do not like the price of admission!

  3. Marie says:

Arrest them! Perish the thought that an American citizen who might not be in lock step with the administration be allowed to participate in a public demonstration.
Even that there would be this so called Freedom March (this is like the two-word slogans from the administration tht mean exactly the opposite of what the title implies — clear skies, healthy forests for example)this Freedom March is actually a pro-war conflation of the illegal war in Iraq with the tragedy of 9/11. Public support for the war is sliding downward and they would like to remind the public of the emotional fervor in the period immediately post-9/11 and attach that to the war in Iraq.
In light of the debacle in New Orleans, it is unseemly that there should be a celebration on 9/11. It’s disrespectful and undignified, but then again, those words have never been associated with, nor part of the thinking of the Bush administration.

  4. Marie says:

I am sorry for your sorrow and troubles, Iraq Veteran. The exploitation of the tragedies of life by this group in power is despicable. You’re correct, that this admin. is all for public relations and facade, but no substance and integrity.

  5. Dumb Fox says:

#2 – Great post. Really well said.

This Freedom Walk with its access restriction meets the textbook definition of doublespeak. It’s shocking really, straight out the totalitarian playbook.

Anyone know what it’s costing the taxpayers? And whether, just maybe, that money could be put towards Katrina disaster relief… Just an idea.

  6. Ugh says:

Anyone know what it’s costing the taxpayers?

Well, considering that every single member of the U.S. park police will be guarding the route, I would say quite a bit (not to mention that the Pentagon is giving out free t-shirts to anyone who registers).

Not to heroin dealers: Lafayette Park (across from the White House) to be unguarded this Sunday morning.

  7. Darth Filibustrous says:

So if Osama shows up for the parade WITHOUT registering, he will be arrested? A step forward I guess…

  8. Ron says:

Freedom? What Freedom? We don’t need no stinking freedom.

In 1972, on the Fourth of July on the DC Mall across the street from the National Gallery of Art there was a tent set up and a group of hippies were offering free marijuana to any and all takers.

“Free marijuana, free marijuana. If you want to try some, come on over,” the hippie shouted. The bluegrass band played and the free citizens did their thing.

That was when freedom did live here in murka. it’s gone now.

  9. private citizen says:

Does anyone smell Mandatory ID Cards in our near future from this bunch? You may be required to carry them to do almost anything under threat of arrest. You can see the gradual conditioning of the public with stories such as this.
I do believe they will use the Katrina aftermath ID confusion (lost children, separated families etc.) to promote their inception in the coming months. Just a hunch.

  10. Pablo in Mexico says:

    PRIVATE CITIZEN

On the busheviks agenda this term in congress is a national ID card system. The card will be issued to every amerikan citizen.

The kicker, it will have a global positioning device chip in the card. Any law inforcement or government official can punch your card number into the computers and know where you are.

Me, I live in Mexico and would not obtain one of those cards for a dump truck full of 100 dollar bills. BTW,
your new passport will also contain the GPS chip.

  11. Ron says:

Everything about you is already known. The privacy that you once had is gone completely.

The only way you can be ‘incognito’ is to nisappear into the wilderness of New Mexico and become a Pancho Villa.

Privacy is a thing of the past.

If you don’t register for the freedom walk, you are against freedom.

The so-called Republicans want to grow government so huge that it reaches a critical mass and collapses on itself. They seem to know how to get the job done.

I received an email a few years ago now that said that the Muslim fanatics want to scatter all Americans to the ‘four winds.’ Looks like Mother Nature is giving them a helping hand.

I don’t care what anybody knows about me.

  12. Terrytheturtle says:

It makes perfect sense to me: they need to know how many brown shirts to pass out…

  13. Laura says:

Would it throw a monkey wrench into the system if everyone reading this registered for the walk? You can register at https://www.penfed.org/freedomwalk/register.asp

  14. Rotwang says:

“ON MY COMMAND, ALL PRE-CLEARED CITIZENS WITH AUTHORIZATION PAPERS OUT AND AVAILABLE FOR INSPECTION WILL VIGOROUSLY AND WITH EARNEST FERVOR CELEBRATE THE APPROPRIATE, WELL-DEFINED AND AGGRESSIVELY-ENFORCED FREEDOM PRIVILEGES WHICH WE HAVE EXTENDED TO YOU.

“CELEBRATIONS WILL BE RESTRICTED TO THE PAVED AREAS BETWEEN THE BARRIER FENCES. APPROVED SIGNAGE AND BANNERS WILL BE DISTRIBUTED TO YOU. ALL OTHER DISPLAYS WILL BE CONFISCATED. YOU WILL PROCEED IN A FREE BUT ORDERLY FASHION TO THE TERMINAL PARADE CHECK-POINT. A LIST OF ACCEPTABLE EXPRESSIONS OF ENTHUSIASM HAVE BEEN POSTED FOR YOUR REVIEW. SINGING OF PATRIOTIC ANTHEMS IS ENCOURAGED, BUT ROUSING COUNTRY & WESTTERN SONGS NOT RELATED TO JOBS, HARDSHIPS OR HEARTBREAK MAY BE SUBSTITUTED.

“YOU WILL ENJOY THIS EXERCISE OF PERSONAL LIBERTY, AND AT ITS CONCLUSION YOU WILL IMMEDIATELY AND CALMLY DISPERSE, UNDER PENALTY OF DETENTION, SEARCH AND SEIZURE OF ASSETS.

“THANK YOU, GOD BLESS AMERICA…AND REMEMBER TO KEEP YOUR HANDS IN PLAIN VIEW AT ALL TIMES. FREE PEOPLE HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE!!”

  15. cynical ex-hippie says:

Brilliant idea, Laura. Wish someone had thought of it sooner. We could fill up their registrations and not show up. They’d have like ten people there.

Check out this thankyou for registering:

In addition, any backpacks, duffels or coolers will be subject to search.

Thank you for being part of the Freedom Walk.

  16. Gary Kleppe says:

According to that site, the deadline for registration is already past.

  17. Zookeeper says:

#11 – I don’t care what anybody knows about me.

Ron, I’d be careful with that one. It’s easy to say we wouldn’t care what anyone knows about us, but we all have things about us, even things that wouldn’t be publicly embarassing or illegal, which are only ours. We’re lucky to have a certain amount of privacy in this country, and we shouldn’t so willing to give it up. Just my feeling…

  18. wisedup says:

Freedom of Assembly?……more charges against bushie

  19. Electric-Escape.net says:

From tacky to ironic in 7 seconds

Slightly tacky: The Pentagon is sponsoring a September 11 Freedom Walk (and barbecue) in remembrance of the victims of the terrorist attacks.

  20. Sara says:

Anyone else seen the email going around encouraging us to BUY NO GAS on September 10th? The idea being that if we get a critical mass of non-buyers, the supply will glut the storage facilities and prices MUST drop. Hit the bastards in their wallets! We certainly can’t appeal to their better natures.
Of course we would have to do it every month in order to work up enough participants, but the internet is out friend… I like the idea.
Note: Why no trolls on this thread? No talking points yet? How can the possibly defend this insanity? Seig Heil Bush!

  21. Sharon Cox says:

Great posts Iraq Vetran and Maria. I agree with every one here. It seems so very sad to me that our country has come to this. It’s going to take forever for me to get over this grief of our people dieing in Iraq and the South. Almost all of our freedom’s are gone, we must stop these wars and this bunch.

  22. David B says:

Why are you suprised? This is just another controlled, republican only, pumped on King George, photo-op rally. Let’s all register and show-up with protest signs for the war and NOLA. I’ll bet we’ll be jailed as well even though we are registered.

Everything is good, no pictures, it didn’t happen, its under control, you must be dreaming, let us shape your reality. This shit is just too scary and needs to stop.

  23. Iraq Veteran says:

I would hope that this not become a POLITICIZED issue on the side of righteousness. ENOUGH is ENOUGH! But if there is evil, then there is no compassion. If you see ONE person is need, then it should be your obligation to assist. A REAL President would have landed Air Force One and not flew over! I am sure that plan has a cargo hold and water could have been loaded.

My father sits in sadness as we prepare to bury our loved ones. They waited for 36 hours and the house washed away! We see no solace as we witness ministers, pastors, and men of the clergy denegrate and degrade themselves into the political realm. It would be my hope that the IRS investigate their tax-exempt status to validate their true motives.

A Freedom Walk has long since past! The people that died are free from this troubled world, other than that should it not be a Memorial Tribute? How did they contribute to Freedom, when you kill in their name?

I fought battles for both Bush and Reagan. My job was clear and the objective set from the onset. My FIGHT is now against this administration and all it stands for. If that makes me a LIBERAL then so be it! But, I wonder how many CONSERVATIVES would support them if they were in my shoes?

  24. Marie says:

    Iraq Vet
    A big AMEN to you.

  25. Sharon Cox says:

Add my name to the list Iraq Vet. Another big Amen to you.

  26. matt says:

Everything this administration does is Orwellian and corrupt. The photo op’s when Bush touched down on the Gulf coast, was it just a coincident that the National Gaurd happened to show up at the exact same time. So the American people could see a split screen of King Goerge addressing the nation while troops rolled in . Everything they do is rehersed in order to keep he’s sheep followers brain dead and salivating. Their plan is to call things exactly what they arent, like the Clear sky’s act which deregulates pollution control. Operation Iraqi Freedom, which in truth should be called Operation create chaos to steal oil and build army bases. And then just tell the people that things are going well on the Gulf Coast, were doing the best we can, help is on the way, and if anyone starts to question the slow response and complete lack of leadership. Then just shift the blame, you know this is’nt the time to play the blame game as the fresh right wing talking points have heralded. But ya know the mayor of New Orleans and Gov. Blanco really showed a lack of leadership. These right wingers are the scum of the earth, they lay in filth right their with the terrorists. But they don’t see this hurricane as being a catastrophe, they see this as just another way of dishing out contracts to Halliburton and other multinational Bush supporters. The first thing they thought was how can we exploit this to make money. That’s why Bush has just used he’s executive power to repeal the Davis-Bacon Act, so contractors with the job of rebuilding won’t have to pay minimum wage in the effected states. This will surely increase their profits by atleast 30%. The republicans and their supporters are worse then Nazi’s, atleast the Nazi’s were truthful about their objectives.

  27. greg says:

I know Fred Phelps and his group (godhatesfags.com) are going to be protesting there… maybe they’ll be arrested?

    One can only hope.

  28. GP says:

Rotwang, thanks so much for #14. Bullseye!

  29. Ryan Neat says:

    greg,

I wonder how phelps would rationalize the fact that despite right wingers claiming new orleans was hit because of their gay stance, that the gay section of the french quarter was untouched by flooding. Either god’s a really bad aim, or he was aiming for the churches instead, because they got whallopped all through the south – many ripped from their foundations… The right wingers always love to point out ‘god’s will’ when it suits their hate filled agenda, but they always seem to miss it when it smacks them…

  30. pbg says:

    It’s the Bataan Freedom Walk!

  31. cynical ex-hippie says:

Sara, I buy gas at most once a week, so chances are I won’t be buying today anyway. You could call for a boycott six days a week and I wouldn’t have to change my habits to follow it.

Besides, a one-day boycott is meaningless. If you need the gas, you’ll fill up the day before and that won’t affect stockpiles in the least.

  32. wisedup says:

OK…I want all the police to regester to, photo ID,DNA. and all. I want NAME TAGS on all police and badge numbers….and STRIPPED SEARCHED..so no ‘planting of drugs or anything else does not occure’….
    Fair enough?
