Yesterday on Fox News Sunday, Brit Hume pointed out that after five years of inexperienced leadership, FEMA has become “tiny,” “little,” and “weak.”
Of course, according to Hume, that’s because “the governors want it that way.”
Actually, Hume has it exactly wrong. State and local officials have been complaining about the lack of federal support for years:
The Bush administration’s distance from local disaster-relief officials is by design. From the moment Bush stepped into office, he’s been determined to move away from the coordinated state/local/federal disaster-relief approach used by Clinton…
State and local disaster-relief officials have been complaining about the lack of federal involvement in emergency response for some time. Trina Sheets, the executive director of the National Emergency Management Association, which represents local emergency personnel, told Salon that “since the Department of Homeland Security was established there has been a steady degradation of the capabilities.” Local officials protested earlier this year, when the Department of Homeland Security proposed an internal reorganization that would officially absolve FEMA of its disaster-preparedness functions and instead hand disaster relief to a new agency.

Tiny? Little? Weak?
Sounds more like a description of President Bush.
September 12th, 2005 at 2:28 pmBrit Humes brain.
September 12th, 2005 at 2:29 pmOne governor who wanted a strong FEMA response was Jeb Bush.
That’s the President’s brother. In a vital swing state. In an election year.
For the full story on the politics of Bush-era disaster relief, see:
“FEMA: Florida Election Management Agency.”
September 12th, 2005 at 2:29 pmPeople with first hand knolwedge seem to have a different point of view and ask the probing question; “Should I believe what some crass political hack has to say or my own eyes?”
Jason van Steenwyk is a Florida Army National Guardsman who has been mobilized six times for hurricane relief. He notes that:
“The federal government pretty much met its standard time lines, but the volume of support provided during the 72-96 hour was unprecedented. The federal response here was faster than Hugo, faster than Andrew, faster than Iniki, faster than Francine and Jeanne.”
For instance, it took five days for National Guard troops to arrive in strength on the scene in Homestead, Fla. after Hurricane Andrew hit in 2002. But after Katrina, there was a significant National Guard presence in the afflicted region in three.”
Journalists who are long on opinions and short on knowledge have no idea what is involved in moving hundreds of tons of relief supplies into an area the size of England in which power lines are down, telecommunications are out, no gasoline is available, bridges are damaged, roads and airports are covered with debris, and apparently have little interest in finding out.
So they libel as a “national disgrace” the most monumental and successful disaster relief operation in world history.
I write this column a week and a day after the main levee protecting New Orleans breached. In the course of that week:
More than 32,000 people have been rescued, many plucked from rooftops by Coast Guard helicopters.
The Army Corps of Engineers has all but repaired the breaches and begun pumping water out of New Orleans.
Shelter, food and medical care have been provided to more than 180,000 refugees.
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05254/568876.stm
All that took a week. STFU already.
September 12th, 2005 at 2:39 pmAh yes, Brit Hume. Another gem of a human being. I wonder if he thought to call his stock broker when this natural disaster struck.
September 12th, 2005 at 2:40 pmYawn…. The left plays the blame game to take away from the horrible state and local leaders.
Sen. Landrieu’s breakdown is fun to watch. She’s just sad because the base she exploited to steal elections just got moved.
September 12th, 2005 at 2:44 pmHume may not be right about the governors, but I would love to see any “fans” of ThinkProgress disprove his claim that FEMA is not a first responder agency. That is the fundamental fact here — the one that absolves President Bush of most of the criticism he’s been facing from the left.
September 12th, 2005 at 2:46 pmHello skel I-wrong-I
Jesus you cockroach skels will through a dead baby if it would help this loser president. If you read the article you post you would notice that every disaster mentioned was pre Clinton. September 12th, 2005 at 3:11 pmMSM always gives Brit Hume a pass!
Isn’t Hume the Washington, DC Bureau Chief for Fox News? He isn’t just some crackpot pundit. It has become routine in the liberal blogs to dismiss Fox News as a bunch of biased wingnuts. But isn’t there also a real issue of press accountability here. Can you imagine the bureau chiefs of any of the networks or the other cable shows being so routinely biased. When they are arguably occassionaly biased, Fox doesn’t hesitate to jump all over them. Why aren’t NBC/MSNBC, ABC, CBS or CNN all over the routine republican bias of Brit Hume? As a group the other networks need a backbone implant.
September 12th, 2005 at 3:36 pmNED “The left plays the blame game to take away from the horrible state and local leaders.”
Meanwhile…The President takes away resources from the state and local leaders.

September 12th, 2005 at 4:39 pmDoes anyone else see that what is going on is they are trying to disenfranchise state and local government? They want to take over completely, centralize control over the entire nation and its people, lock up American citizens at will for no reason at all and destroy any sense of individual liberty.
Post-Katrina organization by private individuals to provide relief to victims was purposely thwarted by a federal government (FEMA) desperate to regain control. Read what they said about it…their first order of business was NOT to save lives, but to regain CONTROL.
Armed MILITIA …guns for hire with orders to shoot to kill American citizens, whose only “offense” is that they are hurricane/flood victims and/or refuse to leave their homes. Arms are being confiscated from American citizens.
The First Amendment is dead and gone. Protestors are shunted off into invisible “free speech zones” or illegally arrested.
The Second Amendment is dead and gone. Private guns for hire are confiscating guns lawfully owned by American citizens.
The Third Amendment is dead and gone. Militia, National Guard and members of armed forces can now enter and take over your home
The Fourth (freedom from unreasonable police action), Fifth (freedom from self-incrimination) and Sixth Amendments (right to counsel) are dead, killed by the “Patriot” Act and buried by complicit judges who will be rewarded with SCOTUS seats (Roberts got his nod by approving Chimpy’s Imperial Presidency and the Fourth Circuit is sure to lose one of its own to SCOTUS as a reward for the horrendous Padilla decision — one that rubber-stamps with approval an authoritarian regime modeled after Hitler’s Nazis, reich here in the U.S.of A.
The Seventh Amendment is well on its way to being dead and gone: The “tort” reform is guaranteed to keep poor victims of corporate crime out of court, which is slowly but surely being closed to all but rich white folk.
The Eighth Amendment against cruel and unusual punishment? Don’t make me laugh, this has been ritualistically ignored by prison overseers, fresh from their days as slave overseers, who make inflicting pain and misery a career…so much so, they have been engaged to do it all over at Gitmo and Abu Garaib…former U.S. policies against torture are now “quaint.”
The Ninth Amendment (preserving the soverignty of states)– BEING KILLED BEFORE YOUR VERY EYES. The topic of this latest GOP talking point. Denounce the local government and bambozzle the sheeple into giving up on it, finally approving a centralized “streamlined” government run of course by the incompetent sociopaths currently in charge.
The Tenth Amendment preserving the right of the people (HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA) You gave that up when you elected these criminals.

Hurt my feelings? That would require that I actually ‘care’ about what you think - when it’s clear the reverse is true. I don’t go to freeper sites in desperation for approval as you do here - I spend time commenting on and supplying information to fellow liberals. Your psychosis however takes you out in search of approval and rejection, which in a dysfunctional childhood raised person is ‘love’. You’re just a bundle of dysfunctional and psychosis, and largely exist on projecting those weaknesses on others. You need a therapist, not a pulpit…

No, actually homophobia is a made up word and has ZERO credible science behind it. I don’t know any homosexuals, (that I know of) so it’s pretty hard to hate. On the other hand I do hate what you do. September 12th, 2005 at 6:16 pmMrWrong,
Thanks for demonstrating that you’re ignorant of your own sexuality and of even what science means yet again. No wonder you guys think the world is 8000 years old, you’re even more stupid than I thought. You say there is ZERO credible science behind it, yet scientific experiments performed by the university of georgia that have since been replicated by other scientists showed that those who suffer from homophobia responded to gay porn… I can point you to the studies, but then again you are in such rejection of who you are, I know you’ll disregard all of the overwhelming science in place of your ignorant religious preconceptions.
And once again you go with the ‘feelings’ thing - wow you sure a touchy feely closet case. Frankly you don’t hurt my feelings, because I know who and what you are, and your comments have no ‘value’… It’s you who seem to get really worked up when you discovered you were a fag…
September 12th, 2005 at 6:29 pmJane,
He’s mentally ill. This kind of psychosis often happens to men who repress their sexuality. They resort to violence and homophobia out of a lost sense of identity. I have lots of friends gay/straight/bi and transgendered, and many of the gay/bi friends tell me about having been homophobic gay bashers before they got a grip and realized it was about their issues and not others. He thinks he’s smart and wise in his ignorance, but he’s really just another scared, shallow little closet case that has gone crazy under all of the psychological pressure that his ignorant and inept view of religion has applied to him. He probably has an idiot homophobic religious father who applied all of this guilt on him so badly that he’s become a psychotic terrorists. There were rumors about moh. atta (one of the 9/11 bombers) that indicated he may have also been trying to ‘prove something’.
The Jim West, Mehlman, etc. of the right wing keep getting shoved out of the closet for a reason. The right wing values are a natural product of a psychotic state…

Jane is correct in stating that those who are in the process of failing to win the debate are those who obsenities.
Walt,
I grew up on a farm, we always had gay animals. A recent study in england found that ~8 percent of sheep are gay. The fact is that only an idiot rube with no exposure to nature or the real world would call it ‘unnatural’.
We live in a programmed world of societal pressure and often bigotry. This same bigotry used to teach white christian folk like MrWrong that black people were inferior - (it sounds like they still do in his church), because that was a societal norm and a religious based lie. They were convinced the africans where the rejected children of moses who had sinned. This kind of nonsense from an unsophisticated desert culture underlies much of the racism, bigotry and claptrap from people. Science clearly shows this to be absolute nonsense, and that only a primitive boob still thinks like this idiot. No wonder he can’t get a girlfriend (or was it that he didn’t want one?)…

September 12th, 2005 at 7:04 pmWalt,
I assume that you’re somewhat religious, but open minded by your comment. You might find the following link useful.
http://www.religioustolerance.org/hom_fuel2.htm
In particular the university of georgia SCIENTIFIC study that showed a direct correlation between homophobia and repressed homosexuality is broken out there. There are also discussions of religious values and prohibitions, etc.,
For instance, most christians don’t realize that the original greek words used in the new testament that discuss homosexuality were prohibitions against prostitution and pedophelia. Both practices were common in the greek and roman world, and the religion found them exploitive. The christian church had no problems with ‘relationships of equals’ until a particuarly creepy and homophobic pope in the 12th century decided to rewrite 12 centuries of tolerance and church doctrine. He was kind of a mel gibson idiot of his day… I used to be a biblical scholar/student in my youth until I discovered comparitive religions and realized I found other religions more useful and productive than I did mainstream christianity…
The problem is you get these half wits like mrwrong who spout religion and know NOTHING about it. I know about the early church, selection of the books that now constitute the bible, translation of key section of the bible, the ‘edits’ made by early scholars that actually changed key sections of the books, and even the gnostic texts which the catholic church tried to destroy all copies of - but which have largely been recovered in the last century. Those books paint a VERY different picture of christianity - and frankly it’s much more interesting picture…
September 12th, 2005 at 7:05 pm“If not then explain the difference between my “name calling†and theirs.”
Because in your case you just use names that don’t match the facts - whereas I back up everything I say with science, fact and direct quotations making my description of you as an ‘idiot’ merely a descriptive adjective that’s a clearly proven fact…
“I never fail Walt because I already know what the losers are gong to say before I ever post. ”
And hence the problem. CONservative is based on the preconception that the outcome and the right decision are pre-known and that no amount of facts can change their faith. We call this ‘blind faith’ or in the case of MrWrong ‘blind ignorance’. The catholic church used to be the same way about celestial matters, and there are even a few hold outs that still think the earth is the center of the galaxy. The right wing thrives on self willed ignorance, and MrWrong is their mouthpiece. He isn’t interested in facts, truth, correctness, because he’s a closted fag, and if he had to start questioning all of the other preconceptions in his life - that one would eventually also have to be questioned.
He’s transparent to everyone, and he thinks he’s ’smart’, that’s the really sad (and amusing) part of folks like him…
September 12th, 2005 at 7:09 pm“I never fail Walt “:MrWrong

comment by Ryan, closet AIDS patient
I repress my heterosexuality because if I didn’t they’d throw my ass in jail or I’d be in an endless stream of sexual harassment lawsuits. Homosexuality isn’t sexuality at all. It’s a mental disorder that presents itself in various and sundry sexual perversions. It’s always been that way. I can prove it beyond a doubt to any rational human being.
If I were you I wouldn’t let me turn this into a discussion of homosexual pathology and attendant neurosis. I’m not sure but I think the last rump ranger that tried me ended up hanging himself. You people are very fragile.
YOu have one hope to cling to Ryan; God does not hate fags. The catch is He does hate faggotry. There is a difference you know.

September 12th, 2005 at 7:19 pmBahaha, that’s so funny, I don’t know how to begin. You do realize that the APA says homosexuality is not a mental disorder, and that homophobia is - right? You do realize that they came to this conclusion after decades of research where they ‘tried to cure’ the sickness, only to realize that every scientific test and every effort demonstrated the opposite of their preconceptions?
Only repressed fags like you cling to religious delusions like this instead of accepting PROVEN scientific facts. You’re the sociologial equivalent of the flatlanders and creationists. You’re irrational and insane because of your repressed issues…
“If I were you I wouldn’t let me turn this into a discussion of homosexual pathology and attendant neurosis.”
Bahaha, you can’t be serious? There are no ‘attendant neurosis’ with being gay - there are lots with being a repressed gay man though as you clearly exhibit on this site…
Bahahaha, you’re SO FUNNY and SO SAD at exactly the same time. You sound like a baby who’s learned to repeat a big word daddy said. So you’re the bathhouse oral sex kinda guy - that fits…
Good men don’t ‘go’ to war, they’re usually sent to war by incompetent fascists like you… And they usually do so to ‘compensate’ for something. Bush for instance is a graduate of ‘worthy creations’ an ex-gay ministry in texas. He like you seems to suffer from self worth issues, and clearly is a right wing hate factory out of self hate.
See MrWrong, I don’t hate you or bush - I actually understand what christianity means. I feel pity for you and I pray that you find actual christianity, because it’s clear you are a lost and tragic evil soul at this point. Surely you can find the good if you stop hating the fact you are gay, and just accept and love yourself for who you are. You can get married you know (or pretend to), you don’t need to go to the bathhouses anymore…
September 12th, 2005 at 7:24 pm“He just wants to get in you pants Walt. You must be about sixteen or he wouldn’t bother.”
Wow, so you’re also a pedophile - now you’re too twisted for help. By the way, for those that don’t know it, that’s the other group of men that are homophobic. The former head of the boyscouts and MrWest from washington are two examples of this.
Pedophiles hate gay men because they actually think gay men are pedophiles. Gay men prefer other ‘men’, pedophiles like MrWrong are the ones that like little boys. And that IS listed in christianity as a sin (as it should be) because it’s exploitative and not a metting of partners.
And walt, don’t worry, I don’t date online… If anyone wants your goods, it’s clearly MrWrong. He’s the one that keeps making all of the sexual reference - it’s clear he’s got MAJOR issues…
September 12th, 2005 at 7:26 pmI was 16 before your mother was born.
September 12th, 2005 at 7:30 pmHere’s an ACTUAL study done by the APA on gay families and how the biggest challenge to those kids is helping parents deal with ignorant homophobes like MrWrong
http://www.apa.org/pi/parent.html
The single largest threat to the health and welfare of gay people and their children are right wing bigots and their hate filled persecution.
Here’s another one debunking the gays in the military bias of the right wing redneck morons.
http://www.apa.org/pi/lgbc/policy/military.html
The APA actually does scientific research - unlike the right wing hatchet jobs the think tanks pretend to do. One ‘discredited’ right wing guy did his research by using the number of google links he could find on a topic, and extrapolating this as an expression of the event in the public space. The method of the right wing spin machine is all vodoo - but mostly just doo…

September 12th, 2005 at 7:37 pmOr shoulddI say fathers?
I actually understand what christianity means.
comment by Ryan, practicing Hindu/Homo
The only thing your really understand is that you have to find a way to rationalize your condition and disassociate yourself from that nagging feeling that you are in deep shit. You do that by attacking others and projecting your corruption onto them. Really, how much “Gay Pride” do you actually have anyway?
September 12th, 2005 at 7:37 pmI understand what human sacrifice is, that does not mean I practice it. Also Hindu, Islam, etc…
September 12th, 2005 at 7:44 pmMrWrong,
Corruption? That’s an interesting word coming from a CONservative :)
How interesting that someone who’s so unhappy with their lives they have to come and beat up people they feel are ‘weak and corrupt’ to feel better about themselves. You’d think they’d be smart enough to realize that this was a sign of their failure and weakness - but this is part of the psychosis of the closet. MrWrong projects all of his failures (no relationship, no emotional success) on others so he doesn’t have to deal with them.
This is common with a paranoid personality disorder, which is most likely what this poor pathetic person suffers from. He deserves our pity, and he certainly has mine. He’s so disconnected from spirituality, love and self worth that his greatest joy as he put it was to come and beat up people he doesn’t agree with that he finds ‘weak’… And yet, that very act is the act of a wanna be bully - inherently a psychotic personality state. Bullies usually grow up with abusive parents - it’s safe to say, this poor soul is one such case…
Thanks for being so detailed on the fact you were a child abused pedophile - it definitely explains all of the self hate. Get some therapy, and stay away from the children Mr Jackson!
September 12th, 2005 at 7:45 pmWalt,
I believe in the hindu paradigm that says that while we are individuals we are all part of the devine. We cannot fight others without fighting ourselves, and in the end we are all one creation. It’s very much an accountable situation because in order to access the divine you must first know yourself and through your inner self find you are connected to all others.
That’s why I can have compassion for such a loser, why I can readily be truthful to him, and yet still hope he finds his way despite the fact it’s clear he’s a miserable soul. In a modern metaphor, he’s a gollum, lost tragic and suffering. I wouldn’t trust him with my ring, but I hope he finds peace ;)
September 12th, 2005 at 7:48 pmI meant divine - that’s what I get for typing so fast..
September 12th, 2005 at 7:48 pmWongo is just like his buddy bush. He has smoked too much weed, sniffed too much cocaine, drank too many beers, killed too many small creatures and slept with too many farm animals.
September 12th, 2005 at 7:54 pmW has no concept of what a farm animal would look like.
September 12th, 2005 at 8:03 pmIt is said that as a boy dumbya’s parents were ashamed of him and his actions. (no humor here) And as a young boy he would routinely abuse animals with fireworks.
Now think about it, most little boys that abuse animals don’t grow up to be pRESIDENT.
They grow up to be serial killers.
Food for thought. How many have died by his actions NOW?
Things that make you go hmmm.
September 13th, 2005 at 1:15 amBy the way, don’t respond to trolls or skels. It only makes them feel they have de-railed the topic.
I am guilty of responding to them, but sometimes it’s the next best thing to being there. So I understand having to address their idiotic blubbering.
September 13th, 2005 at 1:17 amKJ,
Bush did end up being a serial killer, how many people have died because of his personality? He may not pull the trigger, but he’s definitely a killer…
September 13th, 2005 at 1:40 amRight,
Please digest my statement in its entirety. If you can only respond by perversing its initial meaning, then hold your tongue– your foolishness is more than apparent.

September 13th, 2005 at 1:55 amAnd Yes.
I could.
September 13th, 2005 at 1:56 amHume is the biggest political hack on Fox News. Atleast we know where Hannity stands. Hume does his weekly show under the guise of “fair and balanced” and then on sunday he is a pure partisan. I guess we are to believe that monday-friday he can be trusted to take his blinders off. Compare him to Lou Dobbs, who I wish was more partisan, and you will see just how full of it Fox News really is.

September 13th, 2005 at 1:26 pmThis stupid discussion demonstrates exactly why intelligent discourse and meaningful discussion is dead.
I have advised you all before, that folks like NED and IRight are PAID GOP DETRACTORS and you idiots keep falling for it.
Why don’t these people engage in their bloviations on right wing blogs? Because right wing blogs DO NOT ALLOW COMMENTS. Is it any wonder? They live in their little echo-chamber bubble where dissent is death, and truth is an anathma.
DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS. They are here to distract from the discussion. As you can see, from about comment 40 onward, this thread has deteriorated into a dick measuring contest.
Not who has the biggest one, but who IS the biggest one.

I’ll betcha Princess Ryan can shed some light on your door number 1. Door Number 2…no contest. After all, it’s what they pay me for. Right Sweetpea?
September 13th, 2005 at 2:49 pmBack to Brit Hume. This is the same guy who said after the first London bombing (obviously with the stock market on his mind), “Time to buy”.
September 13th, 2005 at 3:52 pmI didn’t know the governors wielded that much power after Bush became president to convince him so easily (and silently I presume) to render FEMA incompetent. Just Fox News at it’s best. Catering to people who are as stupid as Fox News hopes they are.
Brit Hume: Just another piece of shit toady.

Comment by Mr. Evil, boy genius
I don’t care one way or another for any of these empty suites and dresses but I was just a little bit disgusted when Dan Rather said point blank he’d let American soldiers walk into an ambush and be killed “rather” than compromise his professional ethics. Mr. Peter “taking the dirt nap Jennings” reluctantly agreed. I guess that doesn’t count though.
September 13th, 2005 at 4:58 pmI-RIGHT-I, I’m not new here and I don’t like be called “Sweet Baby Jane” or “Sugar.” The difference between the other posters’ name-calling and yours is that yours is much more immature. Your habit of repeating others’ comments and changing the names reminds me of an annoying child who repeats what you say back to you ad nauseum. I know you don’t show up at these posts to make friends, but you’re also doing a shitty job of influencing people.
September 13th, 2005 at 6:55 pm” I-RIGHT-I, I’m not new here and I don’t like be called “Sweet Baby Jane†or “Sugar.†”
Noted, but why not? Would you like it better if I started my response with; “Jane, you ignorant slut.” ?
“The difference between the other posters’ name-calling and yours is that yours is much more immature”.
It only seems that way, Sugarpants…..because when I say it I have a smile on my face. When they do they are serious as the AIDS slowly killing Ryan. But since you’re not new here, (strike one) I’d have to conclude that you are simply a humorless Left Wing Dunderheadedtumblefuck. Or as your girlfriends would say, C U Next Tuesday.
“Your habit of repeating others’ comments and changing the names reminds me of an annoying child who repeats what you say back to you ad nauseum.”
OoooooKaaaaay….you’re stupid too. That figures. I’m quoting the loser so when reading (?) dumbass losers like you have a context for the revelations I offer the Walking Dead. I change the name to make them more suitable to the personality of that poor bastard that had the nerve to call me out.
” I know you don’t show up at these posts to make friends, but you’re also doing a shitty job of influencing people.”
Now there’s a revelation! Friends? You people don’t have any friends. You eat each other if it helps to further your evil plans. Don’t think so? Ask Dick Cheney’s poor sexually challenged daughter that you people constantly hurt in order to get at her father. And you’re wrong about the influence. I have loads of influence. If I decide to stick around for awhile I will (with a little help from my friends) move a significant portion of your Leftist Lemmings toward the center. Why? Because the Filthy Left has a secret and I know what it is and I use it against them and I win. I could tell you but if I did I’d have to kill the Princess and I know you think of him as a pet. I know how it is with pets. Even though they lick each other’s behinds you still have to love them.
September 13th, 2005 at 7:56 pmHume has really lost his mind. As Bushco’s poll numbers continue to tank, the watercarriers are becoming more desperate by the hour.

Well Jane, I guess I went overboard with my first response to this but I’d bet you read it before they deleted it. My apologies to all for being too funny and a little obscene. See you next Tuesday, Jane.
