The White House announced today that President Bush will speak from Louisiana on primetime Thursday night before a national TV audience. The announcement indicates that Bush will offer at least his eighth photo-op since his slow response to Hurricane Katrina.
Photo Op #1: Air Force One Fly-Over

Newsweek reported, “Photographers rarely are allowed into the forward cabin of Air Force One, but consigliere Karl Rove and other aides summoned them so they could snap pictures of the Boss gazing out the window as the plane flew over the devastation. Republican strategists privately call the resulting image—Bush as tourist, seemingly powerless as he peered down at the chaos—perhaps among the most damaging of his presidency.â€
Photo Op #2: Rose Garden address
![]()
Bush: “FEMA Director Mike Brown is in charge of all federal response and recovery efforts in the field… This recovery will take a long time. This recovery will take years.†[8/31/05]
Photo Op #3: Bush introducing Bush I/Clinton Katrina Relief efforts
![]()
“A source tells Time that four days after Katrina struck, Bush himself briefed his father and former President Clinton in a way that left too rosy an impression of the progress made. ‘It bore no resemblance to what was actually happening,’ said someone familiar with the presentation.â€
Photo Op #4: Good Morning America interview

Bush: “I don’t think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees. They did anticipate a serious storm. But these levees got breached. And as a result, much of New Orleans is flooded. And now we are having to deal with it and will.” [Good Morning America, 9/1/05]
Photo Op #5: Trip to Gulf Coast, Part I

Bush: “Out of the rubbles of Trent Lott’s house — he’s lost his entire house — there’s going to be a fantastic house. And I’m looking forward to sitting on the porch.†[Bush, 9/2/05]
Photo Op #6: Trip to Gulf Coast, Part II

“President George W. Bush, under fierce criticism for his government’s slow response to Hurricane Katrina, sought to reassure storm survivors on Monday as a veteran lawmaker complained that bureaucratic red tape was hampering relief efforts in Mississippi.â€
Photo Op #7: Trip to Gulf Coast, Part III

“Bush’s third visit to the devastated region in nine days comes as he is struggling to assert his leadership after a calamity that has spawned bitter exchanges between local and federal officials. Meanwhile, Bush’s approval ratings have tumbled to new lows.â€
Bush needs to spend less time posturing before the cameras and more time managing the hurricane recovery efforts.
OMFG
I just got a CNN Breaking News e-mail with this body:
“President Bush says he takes responsibility for the federal government’s failures in responding to Hurricane Katrina.â€
September 13th, 2005 at 12:32 pmAhh Spudge-Boy, you beat me to it.
“Katrina exposed serious problems in our response capability at all levels of government and to the extent the federal government didn’t fully do its job right, I take responsibility,” Bush said during a joint news conference with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani.
Ah, so we now have a repentent GWB; perhaps this will be the beginning of a slew of apologies and admissions of fuck ups…nah, never.
September 13th, 2005 at 12:36 pmThis will only embolden the left wing haters on this site, but it will satisfy the rest of the country.
AND the longer the left continues to exploit this tragedy, the sooner it will backfire in their faces. Bush is satisfying a political need and setting you haters up for a fall.
No wonder you hate him – he’s simply brilliant.
September 13th, 2005 at 12:36 pmHere is the link to Bush admitting failure:

Don’t feed the troll.
September 13th, 2005 at 12:41 pm“I can do more than one thing at one time. By the time I’m finished president, I hope you will realize that the government can do more than one thing at one time, and individuals in the government can.”
Bush at 3:42 pm EST:
Brilliant indeed.
September 13th, 2005 at 12:41 pm#4 – please don’t stop hating him. By time were finished with the left, we’ll have nearly 60 senate seats. Your tin ears are the biggest asset the GOP has.
September 13th, 2005 at 12:44 pmYup. We stood up the empty suit and had an “accountability moment”. Now back to our regular programming –> “The stste and local governments failed. The state and local governments failed. The state and local governments failed.”
September 13th, 2005 at 12:45 pmDon’t feed the troll.
Let him continue to think he is right. The best will be when his dumbass world comes crashing down around while he thinks he is correct.
September 13th, 2005 at 12:48 pmUnderstood.
September 13th, 2005 at 12:49 pmYou poor bastards, I feel sorry for you lot. Don’t worry, most of us over here realise that Bush and his syphilitic cronies are but a blip and don’t represent most rational and decent US citizens anymore. Keep fighting the good fight, your countrymen are waking up. THAT’S what a democracy is all about.
On the topic; the more photo-ops he takes, the more desperate the GOP perceive the situation to be. From my observations, their natural demeanour is only to react to anything that polls badly or is in their own interests, so they must be sh!tting themselves.
BTW, when is Rove going to jail?
September 13th, 2005 at 12:59 pm#7..took the words right out of my mouth.
September 13th, 2005 at 1:02 pmwe’re watching the ship slowly sink….

Hello from the other side of the pond.
Yes, we are trying to change the minds of as many people as possible. It is working, but some of these NeoCon trolls will never change. We need to ship them off to a desserted island.
September 13th, 2005 at 1:07 pmLittle Strummer Boy “takes responsibility” but not accountability.
September 13th, 2005 at 1:08 pmThe Northeast Dilemma opines, “This will only embolden the left wing haters on this site….”
So are you referring to yourself?
September 13th, 2005 at 1:10 pmThe time to take responsibility was from day one, and I don’t mean from day one of the weather service’s forecast.
What is sad is that whatever positives there are in Bush saying he takes responsibility are obliterated by the negatives of saying we have to assess whether the government is prepared for future disasters. That’s what we’ve allegedly spent the last 4 years doing – getting prepared – and what Bush has spent the last four years proclaiming that only he and his party are qualified to do.
Think the right still has a stranglehold on the country? Take a gander at pollingreport.com, and check out the numbers on the 2006 elections; there are dark days ahead for the GOP.
September 13th, 2005 at 1:15 pmDon’t feed that troll.
Just sit back and bask in the glory of his insane stupidity.
September 13th, 2005 at 1:16 pmOff topic, but about the accountabliity moment.
September 13th, 2005 at 1:22 pmI think it’s what I’ve heard called damage control.
It has to be part of an effort to slow down the investgation into why the response was intentionally botched, and who was involved in it.
Spudge-Boy,
Keep going, you’ll get there. Unfortunately for our species, the lower end of the bell curve will sometimes have a say in things and royally f*ck it up. Look on the bright side, it keeps the rest of us on our toes.
In this day and age, fundamentalists of all stripes is the problem, mostly because of their lack of empathy and desire to control others. Dumbf*cks.
September 13th, 2005 at 1:23 pmIt is much larger than bush and his skels in the administration. It is about GOP corruption and the failure of their basic beliefs. This must be hammered home everyday. I urge everyone to call the DCCC and tell them to develop a FIFTY STATE STRATEGY, we must contest every republican skel in every race.
September 13th, 2005 at 1:31 pmWe need to pounce on this admition of guilt. If Bush feels that he is responsible, he should step down. Then we can start the impeachment hearings against Cheney.
September 13th, 2005 at 1:31 pmBetter ask him for his definition of the word ‘responsibility’ (ask him to spell it too ;)
September 13th, 2005 at 1:35 pmCorrection to #2:
This will only validate the left wing haters on this site, but it will enrage the rest of the country.
There, that’s better.
September 13th, 2005 at 1:35 pmThank you, A Brit. US citizens need to hear opinions from the rest of the world; we are not in a vaccuum. I will share your comments with others who could use this valuable lesson. The good news, people here in the bible belt are waking up. I am in a city that is 67% repub, er, WAS 67%. GO TEAM CONSCIENCE!!
September 13th, 2005 at 1:51 pmP & P – yawn…. You guys are overplaying your hand. Just don’t cry when we destroy you at the polls.
September 13th, 2005 at 2:17 pmA Brit — Thanks for the support. We appreciate knowing that people across the pond know we Americans are not in support of this man and his government. We are trying very hard to oust him, but with his majority control in every facet of government, and news management as well, we are in an uphill battle.
September 13th, 2005 at 2:30 pmWe are occasionally joined here by a Mr. Caine, who also posts from your side of the Atlantic and I personally appreciate each of you taking such interest.
“Responsibility” is the word today to tamp down some of the fire under Bush’s feet. He says he accepts it, but after 5 years, we suspect his intention and his ability as well as his sincerity.
September 13th, 2005 at 2:34 pmMarie – we suspect your sanity.
September 13th, 2005 at 2:41 pmMarie, we suspect NeDs sanity.
Don’t feed the troll.
September 13th, 2005 at 2:53 pmWhat about the picture of Bush strutting alongside the firefighters (who probably had better things to do)?
Here is one location of the photo: Babies or T-shirts: FEMA cares about T-shirts (post of September 7 at http://stevegilliard.blogspot.com )
September 13th, 2005 at 3:13 pmI know, I know. Dont feed the idiot troll, but, I have to say one thing in referemce to his #2 comment.
He was right, damn it, he was right! ITS POLITICAL.
September 13th, 2005 at 3:15 pm“No wonder you hate him – he’s simply brilliant.”
brilliant? we don’t pay him to be a politician we pay him to be PRESIDENT
there’s an obligation that comes with being president…keeping your people alive and your country moving forward. NOT SAVING YOUR OWN SKIN.
September 13th, 2005 at 3:50 pmNED, is that the royal “we”? (”we” suspect Marie’s sanity–the rest of “us” don’t, NED.) Okay, I’m done feeding the troll.
Hey, Progressive and Proud, how did your animal rescue efforts go in NO?
September 13th, 2005 at 4:04 pmSorry, posted this in the wrong thread earlier:
Churchill was a bit more eloquent then W will ever be; for example, he made this statement:
“We will never surrender. We will never give up. We will fight them on the beach. We will fight them in the country. We will fight them in the city. We will fight them in the alleys. We will fight them to the edge of the empire, but we will never, never, Never, Never, NEVER SURRENDER!â€
When you compare it with this statement, made by our brilliant W:
“FOOL ME ONCE, SHAME ON … SHAME ON ME, CAN’T GET FOOLED AGAIN!â€
Ford has been described as mentally challenged and too dumb to walk and chew gum at the same time, but W can’t talk and read a teleprompter at the same time. Churchill usually read from an index card.
I would guess that brilliance is a comparative issue where the rater is the lowest common denominator.
September 13th, 2005 at 5:35 pmi think mr. bush is o.k im just ready to get back home 6th ward new orleans, louisiana
September 13th, 2005 at 5:56 pm“Republican strategists privately call the resulting image (Bush peering out window of Air Force One) — Bush as tourist, seemingly powerless as he peered down at the chaos — perhaps among the most damaging of his presidency.”
Personally I thought the image funny simply because it reminded me of a puzzled chimpanzee in a business suit peering out an airplane window. Honestly. Bush resembles a chimp in at least some photos, and by chance he had that look goin’ on with the Air Force One shot. That simple.
September 13th, 2005 at 8:10 pmDream on NED. Is that why Bush’s approval ratings are in the 30s? Oh, I forgot, the liberal media reported it.
September 14th, 2005 at 12:14 pmI know we shouldn’t feed the trolls, but isn’t “The Northeast Dilemma” really KARL ROVE in disguise?
September 14th, 2005 at 1:02 pmYes, I admit, I AM Karl Rove…I have nothing to do but sit here while I pull the American people and the President’s strings. DANCE YOU PUPPETS!!! DANCE!!!
September 14th, 2005 at 1:23 pm[...] Today, President Bush will make a quick visit to the Gulf Coast for yet another post-Hurricane Katrina photo-op. Last September, Bush made this pledge to Katrina's victims: "We will do what it takes, we will stay as long as it takes, to help citizens rebuild their communities and their lives." Over half a year later, 59 percent of Americans disapprove of the way Bush is handling the recovery and not enough is being done to provide for the storm's victims. "This government will learn the lessons of Hurricane Katrina," Bush promised. Yet, the nation remains unprepared for another natural disaster of Katrina's scale. Even former House Speaker Newt Gingrich acknowledged recently: "It's going to be really bad by September when we go back and have a one-year review and we realize how much of New Orleans is not fixed as of this coming September."
