Iraqi President Jalal Talabani

By Judd Legum on Sep 13th, 2005 at 10:31 am

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani

told the Washington Post: “In my opinion, at least from 40,000 to 50,000 American troops can be (withdrawn) by the end of this year.” After the Post called the White House for comment, an advisor to Talabani said he “did not intend to suggest a specific timeline for withdrawal.”

  1. The Northeast Dilemma says:

That is consistent with what the White House has said all along.

If the White House does bring troops home next year, then you people will say it’s political and the President is trying to win the mid-terms.

I guess what I am saying is – you people will b*tch no matter what. That is why you’re largely irrelevant in the national debate.

  2. lester says:

We are never going to leave. The neo-cons want us there. We are building permanent bases.

  3. Patriot says:

    NED,
Your leader is a botched coathanger job. We will bitch no matter what.

  4. Patriot says:

That is not what WH has said all along.

  5. Ron says:

Northeast Dilemma must be heavily invested in the arms industry. He’s afraid peace might break out.

He stands to lose if the troops withdraw from eyerack.

Here’s some good advice for you NED: sell stocks now like boeing, raytheon, northrup grumman. buy energy stocks that pay dividends, gold, silver, etc.

Republicans and Democrats might come to there senses. Their political capital is drying up faster than New Orleans.

The time to speak up has passed. Now is the time for senseless bickering.

  6. Darth Filibustrous says:

#1 – NeD, you’re right, it is consistent with what the WH has said, if by “consistent” you mean “complete flip-flop”.

  7. Ron says:

    Make that ‘their’ senses.

It is not consistent; the zeitgeist, the conventional wisdom, was clearly stated that the military presence in Iraq was going to be six years or something like that.

NED, you bitch at the left no matter what. You can if you want, that’s your choice.

I’ll continue to listen all opinions, right, left, radical, it doesn’t matter. They’re griping for good or for bad reasons. It helps to be objective. It doesn’t help to be obnoxious.

  8. Patel says:

Obviously, Talabani’s mouth ran away with him. He suggested a timeline when there wasn’t any. He was probably told to indicate a drawdown of the US troops as was expected to boost Republican support in preparation for the 2006 elections here at home.

Bush must be furious. It’s so fucking difficult to find good help these days.

  9. Randy says:

What is the left’s obsession with a timetable for withdrawal? Our troops will come home when the time is right, when the Iraqi army can defend their borders. Its almost if the left is siding with Al Qaeda trying to defeat our military at every step. They obviously have forgotten that WE ARE AT WAR. Bush said we will take the fight to them and that is exactly what has happened. Once the constitution is ratified in Iraq, there will be another democracy in the world, where there wasn’t before. Can any of you deny with Egypt’s recent election, the handing over of the Gaza strip etc. that peace might finally be at hand in the Middle East? History will show that Bush was the architect behind all of this. Many of you are too blind to realize this. Perhaps, your children will someday.

  10. progressive and proud says:

What about civil war? Do we go back then? Or, do we not have a plan for that either?

  11. progressive and proud says:

I thought we weren’t “nation builders.” Is that not true anymore?

  12. Zookeeper says:

Randy, are you seriously saying you trust Georgie and Rummy to decide when the time is right for our troops to come home? You can’t seriously believe there is going to be democracy in Iraq. Ever heard the word theocracy?

You are right, Georgie will be remembered as the architect behind all this, but not in the way you think. And my children already know it, even if you don’t.

  13. Spudge-Boy says:

    OMFG

I just got a CNN Breaking News e-mail with this body:

“President Bush says he takes responsibility for the federal government’s failures in responding to Hurricane Katrina.”

  14. wisedup says:

“Karl…MORE DAMAGE CONTROL!!!”…watch ol bushie try to talk his way out of this. A little on failures and lots of praise for the little that did work. NO QUESTIONS PLEASE!….Scotty take it from here..now when is my NEXT vacation Karl.

  15. Marie says:

This will only make it more difficult for Bush, et al, because they have no intention of leaving Iraq – we’re building all those bases and an embassy.

  16. Pablo in Mexico says:

Oh yeah, pease in the middle east. How often I have heard that from the wingnuts, but aint seen it yet.
With the Iraqi constitutions there will be another democracy in the middle east.

    Wanna bet?

  17. Susan says:

Sucess in Iraq is not BushCo’s agenda. I heard a radio talk show host say that he wished Iraq would complete the constitution and build up their own security forces so Bushie will have no reason to be there.

It isn’t going to happen. Theres oil in Iraq and if we do not impeach Bushie our troops will be there forever.

  18. David B says:

Yea, screw the Iraqi President and the horse he rode in on.
