Justice Dept: Porn Higher Priority Than Terrorism

In the aftermath of Katrina, we missed this remarkable piece on R. Alexander Acosta, who Attorney General Gonzales appointed as interim U.S. attorney for Southern Florida in June. It’s worth a second look:

When FBI supervisors in Miami met with new interim U.S. Attorney Alex Acosta last month, they wondered what the top enforcement priority for Acosta and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales would be.

Would it be terrorism? Organized crime? Narcotics trafficking? Immigration? Or maybe public corruption?

The agents were stunned to learn that a top prosecutorial priority of Acosta and the Department of Justice was none of the above. Instead, Acosta told them, it’s obscenity. Not pornography involving children, but pornographic material featuring consenting adults.

His own prosecutors have warned Acosta that prioritizing adult porn would reduce resources for prosecuting other crimes, including porn involving children. According to high-level sources who did not want to be identified, Acosta has assigned prosecutors porn cases over their objections. … Acosta [said] that this was Attorney General Gonzales’ mandate.

According to the article, “narcotics trafficking, public corruption, and fraud are rampant in South Florida.” It seems those problems will have to wait.

Yes, I fear consentual adult porn more than Osama, illegal invasions & wars, hurricanes & floods.

Just don’t come after my bong!

  2. wisedup says:

    no no…let me resend that..PARKING ENFORCEMENT! yeah..lets go git-um.
    What is porn….one justice said…”I don’t really know,but I know it when I see it.” …?????????

  3. Dizzy says:

About nothing more than the control of the masses. Won’t work. Just remember that the centerfold poser and the pornstar are more often the daughter of the preacher.
Just as in Katrina, the goverment would rather control, than attend to the job at hand.

  4. Susan says:

My guess is that Acosta is trying to divert attention from child porn because he’s really into it.

  5. Stephanie says:

Let us just set the record stright. We are not fighting a war on terror we are fighting a war on porn. Porn, the kind that is between two consenting adults, is evil and wrong and I’m glad our country will be able to rest soundly at night knowing that our government is taking every necessary step to get rid of it.

But I agree with #2, parking enforcement is probably the second biggest security issue facing this country today, those damn people who think they can get away with not putting a quarter in the meter, kill them all!

  6. spyder says:

“narcotics trafficking, public corruption, and fraud are rampant in South Florida.”

Aren’t these part and parcel of the covert and black operations undertaken by the various political and economic interests of certain Bushco relations and associates??? This nation certainly cannot possibly investigate and prosecute those that are truly working towards bettering themselves at the expense of the taxpayers; afterall that is what tax cuts help fund, right? Where else is the government going to hide various US supported and controlled terrorists and violent mercenaries than in Florida?

  7. Mr. Evil says:

Larry Flynt to the rescue!!! Everybody go out and buy a Hustler today!

  8. Skid says:

Obscenity? Between consenting adults? Like when I watch C-SPAN or the MSMs and see my so-called elected officials SCREW me apparently with my consent? Yes, I do find that obscene.

  9. Francis says:

Priorities for Facism not Democracy. Probably good for for blackmail and the censorship of opposition.

  10. progressive and proud says:

AGAIN, what’s the deal with these sexual fixations? Scary dudes, man.

  11. Mr. Evil says:

These are the same perverted individuals that secretly fly to Thailand so they can have sex with 9 year old girls. Whatever they are bent on protecting us from is the very thing they are personally obsessed with.

  12. Dizzy says:

Should Jenna Jamison or Lotta Top get a condo in Tora Bora?

  13. David B says:

Somehow, I have a feeling that this can be traced to Dobson or one of the other Jesus boys. I thought we had the porn wars all the way to the supreme court back in the 70’s? Nothing happened then, so I guess we’ll waste more tax payer money on it again. I guess they do have the Patriot Act this time to relax personal freedoms.

  14. Ron says:

Anyone remember Jim Bakker? Anyone remember Jimmy Swaggart? Can you say Abu Ghraib? Pornographic pictures surfaced from that place, too. Oh my God, it can’t be true. Oh God… no, say it ain’t so.

In a story in the New York Times last Saturday, a senior defense department official said that Army investigators had collected “several hundred pictures” as a part of their investigation, “but most do not depict Iraqi prisoner abuse. The vast majority are pornographic pictures involving only American soldiers.”

    However… it is true. Amen

You can try to stop pornography, but I don’t think it is going to happen.

More fun than chasing down those goofy terrorists, though.

  15. Zookeeper says:

#4 – Damn, you took mine!

  16. Vee Gee says:

If you take the porn off the internets, there will be only one site left, and it will be called “Bring back the porn!”

  17. Jake - but not that one says:

Fighting porn in S FL is like looking for Bin Laden in Iraq.

    Will they ever learn?

    Jake

  18. Gone At Last says:

Re: #11: Mr. Evil is spot on. And it’s not just a rhetorical flourish — it’s a truth you can take to the bank.

Or, perhaps, put on the front page. Attention, all investigative reporters at the Miami Herald and St. Petersburg Times: Your new U.S. attorney has just outed himself as a probable pervert.

You know what to do. You know how to do it. So do it.

And we will all look forward to reading the results.

  19. katy says:

And those drapes will have to go back up to cover the nasty statues…

  20. Marie says:

These guys are all the same — obsessed with SEX! I think these people are repressed, or suffer from childhood abuse of some kind, or overly strict parenting, hell-fire and damnation preachers, or a combination of all those things. I remember in late 2001 Ashcroft’s priority was to arrest prostitutes in New Orleans, diverting FBI employees to that assignment. We all remember how they had to drape the statue of Justice for his perverted “sensitivity”. Where is sex-obsessed Freud when we need him?

  21. Pablo in Mexico says:

Atty Gen. Gonzalez is going to lose the pukes millions of votes in the south, the sole support of the theocracy.

You see thos boys really love their porn mags and porn movies and anyone who takes it away from them will never be elected again. Its like taking a boe from a hungry dog.

BTW – the buzz in DC is that Bush and Cheney had a falling out. Cheney finally got tired of the idiot Bush and is shying away from him, telling cohorts that you just cannot talk to Bush, he thinks he is prez. So in the absence of Cheney, Rummy has been running the country.

Does that explain anything to you?

  22. Andrew says:

HEY! Guns don’t kill people… BOOBIES kill people! An alarming percentage of children who see bare breasts as infants end up having sex when they get older! They must be protected!

Does this mean two dogs humping in a park can be arrested and euthanized for fornicating in front of children?

I find it disgusting that law enforcement in this country still worries so much about things like this. I’m sure Asscroft had them chasing grown adults who had consentual sex while those guys were learning how to FLY PLANES and not LAND THEM.

  23. marblex says:

Rummy’s wet dream is to place Amurrikans under military rule. That is happening right before our eyes. That’s why Cheney said the military operation complete with armed mercenaries openly threatening and intimidating American taxpayers, is an “exercise.”

Martial law, coming soon to a neighborhood near you.

  24. Mr. Evil says:

Oh, and by the way, the only they are ever going to stop young people from having sex is to somehow find a way to outlaw puberty. So watch those food additives kids!

Pornography has been around since mankind learned how to draw. And I’ll bet they’ve all looked at, watched and tried (probably in vain) to duplicate all the terrible, horrible porn they’ve ever witnessed. And what about the recent revelations about John Bolton’s swinging days?…..

Excellent! New Playboy just arrived! See Ya!

  25. Mr. Evil says:

oops, “way” not “they”. sorry. New Playboy arrival thing. Sorry again for the typo… wow what a… ….

  26. Mr. Evil says:

Girls of the Pac 10! Oh, I’m a dirty boy. I need to be arrested! R. Alexander Acosta, save me from this vile porn! I’m a hopeless addict! A man-child that cannot be responsible for my thoughts! Help! And I haven’t even gotten to the centerfold yet!!!

  27. Ron says:

Pamela Anderson for President in 2008! May Pamela Anderson stay 32 years of age forever.

    I don’t know what you’re thinking, but I know what I’m thinking.

  28. Nick Caine says:

As a Brit looking in from the outside. I must say I do feel sorry for the safety of the American citizens. Is this a sign of the Christian right of America, (Florida), now interfering in the running of the Department of Justice. Using the Attorney Generals to do so.

Is the Attorney General seen as a political position/appointee? Did George or Jeb Bush have any say in his appointment?

At least terrorists know not to dress up as pimps, prostitutes or porn stars.

Is that a bomb in your pocket, or are you just pleased to see me?

  29. Marie says:

Welcome back, Caine. We have been visited by A Brit in your absence. We appreciate the moral support from across the pond.

  30. Carl Nutsak says:

I work at an adult catalog company. We double-check the content of every movie we sell to avoid the rough stuff that’s so popular, like forced sex, rape, etc. Per 2257 we have i.d.’s on file of EVERY PORNO PERFORMER in these movies to vouch for the age. Know what? NO ONE FROM JUSTICE has ever asked to look at our records. That’s like a cop not asking to look at your driver’s license. It’s a SCAM. They don’t dare throw a good portion of the California economy down the drain–do you have any idea how large the adult industry is in that state? They don’t have a case and they’re blowing smoke up your keister.
Our government needs to get involved with international agencies like Interpol to crack down on kiddie porn from places like Eastern Europe and Russia, instead of bothering consenting adults here in the state.

  31. Pablo in Mexico says:

Did anyone besides me noticed the absence of the right wingnut trolls in these comments?

Know why? Because all of them love their porn but will stick with the people who want to take it away from them.

Dont make sense unless you have the same theory that I do, most of the assholes will vote against their own interests everytime.

  32. Impeach Bush says:

Just to review the administration’s “position” :

    BAD: Consenting adult sex

GOOD: Naked pyramids, forced masturbation, rape, naked attacks by dogs till you piss yourself, beatings and torture.

Yes, this administration is made up of good Christians one and all.

  33. Seleana says:

Alright…I have just searched for porn on the Google web site. The Government is just racking up more and more notches on their divesionary pole and I know what their up to. I read a kudos from one woman who has commented on this site already and she is sick; needs immediate counciling and help with her obvious issues. Their is NO war you idiots! There is only Bush’s little oil hunt/revenge binge and I must say that neither are going very well are they? How long have we been in Iraq? How long will we be there? There are soldiers dying for no reason at all and you people are concerned about PORN?! American blood spilt on foriegn soil, for what? Does anyone REALLY know who is willing to give us a strait answer? So the government releases a tape every now and then to keep the interest flowing, now that he’s run out of “material” to control the moronic masses he has tapped phone lines in hopes of wildly finding something new. I don’t give a damn about pornography! I don’t care who watches it, I don’t care what they do with it, I don’t care about the actors or actresses…I care about REAL issues. I care the government is leeching away our freedoms and we let it go by unchecked. What’s that saying, “…if you take away their freedoms a little at a time they will not notice (until it’s too late)…” Who are these people who are searching for men/women who like to watch people having sex? And who are you that goad them on?! Oh that’s right, you are the people who have self-security issues; those women/men who don’t like it that their partners watch porn; don’t like it that their children watch porn. Or possibly your parents and grandparents. I have news for you folks! If your partner’s watching porn TOO BAD! What grown men and women like is their business and why the like it as well. Besides, it’s probably your own fault that you are having this uncomfortable confrontation, either you don’t saticfy their fantasies, or you picked some one who just happens to watch such things. YOUR FAULT! And your children…I DO NOT promote kids watching nor taking part in pornos, but their parents are DEFINATLEY at fault for it wether the children are healthy in mind or otherwise. Pay attention Soccer Moms and over-bearing fathers. YOU are the reason your son/daughter and/or husband/wife are watching porn! I if you don’t like it then do something about your children…TALK TO THEM ABOUT IT! Your partners? TALK TO THEM ABOUT IT! No one can fight YOUR battles for you; not Bush; not the army; not the CIA; not the FBI!!! This is YOUR personal life and if you impose upon other YOUR way of thinking just because you can’t handle your own life then that makes you stubborn, hypocritical, petty, pathetic and inept. And that’s my argument.
