Bush: Forget Everything I Said About Homeland Security

When asked yesterday if Americans should be worried about our government’s response to a future disaster or terrorist attack, President Bush admitted, “Katrina exposed serious problems in our response capability at all levels of government.”

That’s interesting, considering Bush has spent the past couple years telling Americans how safe and secure his leadership has made the country:

- “Since September the 11th, we’ve followed a clear strategy to defeat the terrorists and protect our people. First, we are defending the homeland. We’ve strengthened our intelligence capabilities; we’ve trained more than 800,000 first responders; we have taken critical steps to protect our cities and borders and infrastructure.” [8/24/05]

- “We’re making progress in defending the homeland.” [8/3/05]

- “Of course, we’re doing everything we can to protect America. I wake up every day thinking about how best to protect America. That’s my job.” [10/1/04]

- “In the United States, where the war begun, we will continue our vital work to protecting American people, by protecting our ports and borders and safeguarding infrastructure, preparing for the worst. I mentioned the first responders. I can’t tell you how pleased I am with the coordination now between the federal government, the state government, and local governments for preparing our homeland.” [1/22/04]

- “We have a comprehensive strategy in place; we’re improving our homeland security and intelligence.” [7/30/05]

- “I’ll continue to act to keep our people safe from harm and our future bright.” [6/18/05]

- “We have been relentless, and we will continue to be relentless in our mission to secure the people of this country.” [3/3/05]

- “We will continue our historic investments in homeland security to match the threats facing our country.” [3/3/05]

- “We’ve strengthened protections for the homeland.” [10/31/04]

- “We will continue to use all our nation’s assets to protect the American people. We will wage a comprehensive strategy to protect you.” [10/31/04]

- “We’ve already done a lot. Take a good look at what has taken place since 9/11, and I think you’ll be — as a citizen, concerned about your own safety, I think you’ll be pleased.”
[8/2/2004]

- “We’re taking unprecedented measures to protect the American people here at home.” [3/2/04]

It seems those statements are now inoperative.

Go to http://www.google.com, type the word “failure”, then click the “I’m feeling lucky” button.

I think our platform for 2006 should be The Security Pact or TSP. America needs real “security” but also a LOT of cleaning, hence the TSP for accountability after scrubbing our government clean. It is time we took back the security issue and beat them dead with it. I only hope our Dem “leaders” are thinking alone these lines.

  3. TAC says:

Originally from AtriosBlogspot — guess who is the Democratic governor, and who is the Republican governor:

“Gov. Blanco (Louisiana) says that two days after Katrina, desperate for help, she couldn’t get through to Bush and didn’t get a callback; hours later, she tried again, and they talked.”

“Gov. Barbour (Mississippi) hasn’t had to wait hours to talk to Bush. In fact, Barbour said in an interview with USA TODAY, the president called him three to four times in the wake of Katrina. ‘I never called him. He always called me,’ he said.”

Yet more absolute, undeniable proof of how the Bush Administration places party above country. Flag pin-wearing amoral cretins who “govern” (if one can call it that) SOLELY by what will benefit themselves and the Republican Party. Nothing else is of any significance to them whatsoever.

The 9/11 public discourse project – the remnants of the 9/11 comission, have released their findings on how well the Bush admin has adhered to the recommendations made in the 9/11 report.

  5. Citizen80203 says:

    Good catch rudgrl

I’ll bet that the report card is not released until 2007.

We are NOT safer since he is in office. He can repeat that a million times, but the people are catching on that he is a Potemkin president — a cowboy – all hat, no cattle. A facade. A wizard behind the curtain. He has made us less safe, and even less safe from natural occurrences that could have, would have been managed better if anyone else were president. He has delegated his presidency to subordinates — except his subordinates are political hacks, incompetent cronies who put him in office, donors to his campaigns, some unaware of what is his job description (Chertoff), and we are supposed to be safer?
Is this part of the scheme — to show the total ineptitude of the government, so we begin to think privatization is the answer?
No matter – we are screwed.
Worst president in history will cause the destruction of America as we know it; a simultaneous attack of ineptitude management, fiscal irresponsibility, international arrogance, bellicose speeches, and reneging of treaties.

  7. Alvord says:

Bush’s past statements are going to come back to haunt him big time. Katrina put him to the test and once again he has shown that he is a miserable failure.

  8. nolaluv says:

How is it mentally possible to lie like that to the American people and not feel some kind of remorse. He is obviously pathological and obviously detached.

  9. Kevin says:

“It seems those statements are now inoperative.”

    Heh, how, well, Nixonian.

    #1 (and all)

Who are these Google programmers (hackers?)…they deserve a metal of courage and/or honor. This is huger than huge in my opinion. The web might bring this administration down.

Picked this up on BuzzFlash…can anyone confirm if this might be true?

  12. WaltTheMan says:

    #11 – It’s true.

  13. WiscoDuk says:

    Thanks WTM,

No need to ask where the msm is on this one…

  14. Jane E. Schneider says:

Yes, #11 & #12, I read about it within the last day or two, I just don’t remember where. It’s not surprising, since oil is the lietmotif of this administration.

Marie, thanks for hitting the nail on the head once again. We ARE screwed, unless we keep putting pressure on our so-called “representatives” in Congress. Unfortunately, I live in a small, heavily Republican town in New York, so my rep doesn’t bother listening to her minority constituents. Luckily that minority is growing, finally. They can’t keep us down forever!

  15. diogenes says:

The NY Times is no different than any other advocacy rag.

People on the left are idiots for treating its writers in any other way. This means not just Miller, but Bumiller (today), Wilgoren and every other apologist.

They probably put them all through the Walter Duranty training program when they arrive there for work.

  16. WiscoDuk says:

Someone on one of these threads recently made mention of Dorothy and/or OZ…

Toto has slipped under the curtain and is just starting to bark. Question is (in this story)…will the curtain be opened? Or will Toto be ignored? (Because Dorothy and the crew are fixated on the great and powerful OZ.)

If you really think about the movie scene…this comment might be deeper than it may first seem.

  17. WaltTheMan says:

#16 – I admit that I was guilty of that. My point was that Dorothy woke up and discovered it was all just a dream, which I was sad that no one picked up on. Your point is just as poignant.

  18. steve donohue says:

Words are cheap. No one’s words are cheaper than Bush’s. The only Bushism I now believe is his famous whine, “This job is hard.” As Murphy’s law observed, we tend to rise to our level of incompetence. Bush has arrived.

  21. Marie says:

#11, as you have read by now that’s a true story about Cheney. It’s been reported on various respectable sites.
Years ago, there was a popular book, The Peter Principle, wherein was described a common corporate disorder: a person rises within the corporation until he is over his head and reaches his level of total incompetence and there he stays. The Bush administration, run like a corporation, is like that — they have all reached their Peter Principle.

  22. Susan says:

Forget about impeachent. These are Jerry Springers words. He says it will take too long and Bushie’s term will end first.

TO ALL CANDIDATES RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT,

As our President we give you permission to break the law as many times as you like.
Go ahead and lie about everything.
Rip us off whenever you can.
We the People understand that we are helpless.
Go ahead do your best damage.

    How’s that sound America?

  23. WiscoDuk says:

Thanks for reminding me of The Peter Principal. I’ve often heard it reffered to but have never read it myself. Heard it’s kind of hard to find though…any leads on obtaining a copy?

  24. cynical ex-hippie says:

You know, I wish Republicans had articulated this “every man for himself” policy before last November. It would have helped us out a lot.

  25. Marie says:

    #23 wiscoduk,
I recently donated my copy to the library, or I could send it. I believe it is still available at Amazon. Laurence Peter is the author.

  26. WiscoDuk says:

#25- Thanks Marie- I’ll do some checking before I bug ya.

#24- I’ve kinda felt it’s been every peon for himself for the last 5 years. If your not in the full-time “investor” class or above…you might be a peon.

“This is Karl Rov…(ahem, *cough*) the Northeast Dillpickle speaking”…”President Chimp, uh, Bush, and myself are proud of your Patriotism.” “We’re taking unprecedented measures to rob the American people here at home and abroad and to line our coffers with your hard-earned tax dollars.” [9/14/05] “We’ll continue to pull your strings to keep you people broke and your future bleak.” [9/15/05] Thanks to all the Trolls, uh, I mean Repubican supporters!!! Oh and BTW, I TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY…NOW VOTE FOR ME IN 2008!!!

  29. HoosierDaddy says:

#18 – I agree but I think it’s the Peter Principle you’re referring to. Actually, I think Bush reached his level of incompetence just after high school.
