Katrina Speech: Bush Undercuts Relief Workers

Bush said: “To every person who has served and sacrificed in this emergency, I offer the gratitude of our country.”

FACT — BUSH ORDER ALLOWS FEDERAL CONTRACTORS TO PAY LESS THAN PREVAILING WAGE: President Bush issued an order suspending application of the Bacon-Davis Act which “set a minimum pay scale for workers on federal contracts by requiring contractors to pay the prevailing or average pay in the region. Suspension of the act will allow contractors to pay lower wages.” [Washington Post, 9/9/05]

FACT — BUSH WORKING TO SUSPEND WAGE SUPPORTS FOR SERVICE WORKERS: The White House is working to “suspend wage supports for service workers in the hurricane zone as it did for construction workers on federal contracts.” [Washington Post, 9/14/05]

    Corporate profits. That’s the ticket.
Just let those nice corporations earn lots of money, and give ‘em tax cuts to keep more of it, and now, we will let them pay substandard wages to any desperate person who needs a job. Any job.
Looks like a giant step back toward the early 20th century.

I think this should save the TP’s money if bids are made with good faith and no coorption.
I know in California if prevailing wages are paid it triples the burden to the taxpayer. Also Dubya better make sure that only US Citizens are hired and no illegal aliens (aka criminals)are not hired and anyone who hires one of these criminals should be jailed as they are also a criminal.

#2 “…if bids are made with good faith and no coorption.”

I’ve worked in public works contracting for over 15 years. That’s a VERY big IF.

Also Curtis, where did you get the idea that prevailing wage triples the burden to taxpayers?. Are you calculating prevailing wage versus minimum wage? Would you want buildings constructed by minimum wage earners? In other words, what is the cost to the taxpayer when the project is performed using low-paid unskilled workers who don’t know what they’re doing?

  4. Edward Teague says:

“Dubya better make sure that only US Citizens are hired and no illegal aliens (aka criminals)are not hired” …Dubya has actually removed controls over need for documentation which workers may have “lost in the floods along with their homes etc.,”.

The message is clear. The message is simple. We will use anybody and pay as little as possible.

It’s interesting that your timeline of hurricane Katrina matches no one elses. Why is that? Axe to grind? I think so.
