Katrina Speech: Confronting Poverty

Bush said: “As all of us saw on television, there is also some deep, persistent poverty in this region as well. And that poverty has roots in a history of racial discrimination, which cut off generations from the opportunity of America.”

FACT — MILLIONS MORE AMERICANS HAVE FALLEN INTO POVERTY SINCE BUSH TOOK OFFICE:
1.1 million people fell out of the middle class and into poverty in 2004
1.4 million more children live in poverty since Bush took office
250,000 more African Americans fell into poverty over the last two years
500,000 more Hispanics fell into poverty over the last two years

Armies of compassion? $5000 for job retraining, child care and life? For how long? Tax breaks for employers, what about displaced residents? It just makes me ill. Why reimburse only faith-based helpers?

And didn’t urban homesteading already exist?

  2. S. Evans says:

So, GW what specifically will you do to confront poverty & racial discrimination?

  3. spyder says:

There will not be any effort made to end poverty in the US. The world needs us to become poorer, using less and less of the planet’s resources which need to go to those that can actually pay for them–china and india. Why would Bushco see poverty reduction as something of use to their agenda? Welcome to the the brave neo-version of debtors prisons, to be called safety centers, housed in trailers, secured with fences and contracted security forces, spread across the country. Can’t you see the productivity from all those wageless employment contracts.

  4. Marie says:

Not exactly on topic, but related — anyone notice how most of the displaced victims of the flood have been relocated to “red” states? So, when elections roll around, their votes will be lost in the preponderance of Christian Conservative Republicans in those states.
    Just my cynical thought process.

  5. S.D. says:

Now he wants to “Confront Poverty”?!?!

I nearly choked when he said that. The Bush Doctrine of “The Rich get Richer and the Poor get Poorer” has held true…

  6. mighty aphrodite says:

#4 – Marie, your liberal pessimism is showing – why not think optimistically, “Mmmm, maybe we can swing those evil red counties OUR way by diluting the vote with a bunch of “program dependent” blue minority voters!!!” And if THAT doesn’t work, we can call Revs. Jesse and Al and scream “voter fraud”!!! Where are their churches anyway? Look for the opportunities!

  7. Turk Fowler says:

Mighty- YOU are why blogs rule!!! Very funny stuff….

  8. Turk Fowler says:

Marie- The reason the displaced residents were placed in Red states may be two fold: #1 the red states comprise 99.8% of the land mass #2 the blue states are generally weirder and might frighten an otherwise sensible southern person.

  9. Ted Williams says:

    Ted Williams

I think you are absolutely on track here!
