Rice Suddenly Loses Her Ability To Assess Polls

Last night on O’Reilly, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice claimed she couldn’t assess Bush’s current poll numbers:

O’REILLY: How do you assess President Bush’s falling poll numbers? He’s at the lowest level of his presidency now. Why do you think that’s happening?
RICE: Well, Bill, I’m not one who can assess poll numbers in American politics.

But when Bush’s poll numbers weren’t at the lowest levels of his presidency, she had no trouble telling O’Reilly what those high poll numbers meant:

RICE: Look, the president — first of all, I think one has to look at polls. And he was at astronomically high levels. But see, when you go out there and you talk to Americans, they trust this president. They know that this president is doing everything that he can on the war on terror.

  1. Jeff says:

Sec. Rice has continually shown herself to be a political hack whose first interest is to serve the President with America down the list. The new republican slogan: America 3rd or 4th

  2. Robert says:

When are politicians going to realize they can no longer spout utter bullcrap in the age of the internet(s), with the ability to quickly find prior quotes that directly contradict their current statements?

  3. Keith H. says:

    Rice:
Well Bill, I think the plummeting poll numbers are a direct result of the fact that the best part of the president ran down the crack of his mama’s ass and ended up as a brown stain on the sheet.

  4. muffuletta fan says:

if condi can’t do it on her own, she need only read todays msnbc first read

  5. Marie says:

It should be apparent to everyone that the group in the White House are stumbling and bumbling – badly. Rice may be their black, smart woman who fills a few diversity criteria, but she is as inept as the rest of them. They can tout poll numbers when they are high, but now, poll numbers are meaningless, indecipherable, irrelevant – you choose their word – the fact is that the crap they have been feeding the public is leaking through and visible to all who want to see it.
Keith, what a colorful metaphor! – I hope you won’t mind if I use it myself.

  6. Angus Podgorny says:

One has to remember that these are poll numbers of a historical nature.

  7. Jay says:

In the incomparable words of that great American, Homer Simpson: Doh!

  8. progressive and proud says:

This is a signature repub tactic. Even the trolls mimic the same crap almost verbatim here. Espouse the polls when they are in their favor and if not, then they don’t listen to polls. They are the traditional flip floppers that they acuse others of being. It’s just like theives. Theives always think people are stealing from them. CLASSIC and ELEMENTARY psychology.

  9. Jay says:

…..noone could have predicted the terrorists would use planes as missiles to target buildings.

…..or that the levees would break.

…..or that Iraq would devolve into chaos and a violent insurgency.

…..or that George Bush is a fu*&ing dangerous moron that would ruin this country in 4 short years.

None of this could have been predicted, I don’t think?

  10. Ron says:

She wears expensive shoes, so whatever she says is ok.

    flip flop, it never stops.

  11. Dr. Van Nostrand says:

Another hard-hitting interview from O’Lielly. He really had Rice on the ropes.

By the way, is he part of the “anti-Bush press” since he said that if Iraq had no WMDs, he would not trust the administration again?

  12. Jay says:

I would like to thank ThinkProgress for playing a serious role in helping to expose the truth about the Bushies. There is much more to do (including impeachment) so don’t let up……but this unraveling would have taken much longer if not for the likes of TP, AirAmerica, CfAP, Buzzflash et al………and oh yeah…..reality!

  13. The Northeast Dilemma says:

These polls that you fools so desperately hang onto mean NOTHING. First of all, the liars at CBS oversampled Dems by 10 points and Bush still has a 41% approval. Secondly, the 2006 mid-terms will not be nationally, they will be fought by state. AND even if Bush and the GOP loses next fall, he still gets his two Supreme Court appts (three by next summer if, as expected, Darth Bader steps down).

The Democrats will then seek to impeach him and the public backlash against a move like that will set the GOP up nicely for 2008. Get off the kool-aid, people. You understand so little about politics.

  14. LeisureGuy says:

Perhaps Condi is better suited to deciding for George whether he needs a bathroom break or not.

  15. Keith H. says:

  16. Jay says:

Riiiiight Dilemma……you’re sooo riiiight. Don’t worry about a thing, it’s all going to be fine. You’re getting sleeepy, sleeepy, close your eyes and relax all your muscles…..goooood.

  17. kindness says:

Really, Bill (Mr. Falafell) O’Liely doesn’t serve up softballs to republicans. He let’s them hit it off a T.

Maybe Roves political troubles ARE haveing an impact on this administrations public relations cause they sure suck lately (horay for us). Who know’s, maybe, just maybe that silent middle america majority out there is finally starting to notice the emperor not only isn’t wearing any clothes, but that he’s dumb as a post to boot.

I’m all for pointing out the errors and mis-steps of bushco, but I think democrats and concerned folks need to also start to say what they would do if given their druthers. Critisizing the other side elects republicans, I don’t think it’ll elect democrats. That may not be fair but I think that is accurate.

  18. Keith H. says:

    41%….dude’s on fire!

  19. The Witch says:

These polls that you fools so desperately hang onto mean NOTHING.

So says Condi. Oh, except she doesn’t! Oh, except she does! Oh…

  20. The Northeast Dilemma says:

#16 – you are the people crowing about polls when the GOP controls every branch of govt. We’re busy with our agenda while your busy hoping these polls pan out. Because that worked out so well for you last year. You people are morons.

  21. Jay says:

When shill master and noted journalistic fraud Tim Russert looks like he going to lay an egg as he explains Bush’s latest poll numbers on the news last night…..you know things are in the dumper for these dangerous criminals. Bout time.

  22. Ugh says:

Who cares, this is politics 101. If the polls are in your favor, emphasize the polls, if they’re not, ignore them or say they’re meaningless.

  23. Jay says:

Ugh, exactly. Same applies to reality.

  24. progressive and proud says:

I was taught OUR job as citizens is to hire a president who is forward thinking and can make difficult predictions using his/her intellect and education. Not only traditional eduction but personal introspection and insight which they learn through hard work and experience. A person who can understand what the average American family goes through – either by life experience or deep empathy for fairness and equality.

The incompetant we have in office carries none of those traits whatsoever. We can’t possibly expect anything from this man that he isn’t capable of. We hired (certainly debatable) a person that does not have the intelligence or mental abilities to comprehend the future of the universe. We know that and the repubs know that. Everybody knows that this guy is not Mensa material; this is a given. People hired a buddy not a leader. They hired someone that they feel is just like themselves – an equal, if you will. We shouldn’t be picking a president based on their attitude, we should be looking for someone qualified for their position. We need to read resumes and then “call references.”

  25. Jay says:

Just read this staggering fact in Nick Kristof NYT column from Tuesday:

“That’s one reason the world’s richest 500 individuals have the same income as the world’s poorest 416 million people.”

This is the Republican model of world governance. Hope all the Republicans lemmings that aren’t gazillionaires are ok with it.

  26. progressive and proud says:

NeD, he dost protest too much. Does he even know what that means? I wonder, most repubs aren’t very intellectual. It gets in the way of their earning money. They read The Art of War and think they are smart. Nice try.

  27. The Northeast Dillpickle says:

“This is Karl Rov…(ahem, *cough*) the Northeast Dillpickle speaking”…”President Chimp, uh, Bush, and myself are proud of your Patriotism.” “We’re taking unprecedented measures to rob the American people here at home and abroad and to line our coffers with your hard-earned tax dollars.” “We’ll continue to pull your strings to keep you people broke and your future bleak.” Thanks to all the Trolls, uh, I mean Repubican supporters!!! Oh and BTW, I TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY…NOW VOTE FOR ME IN 2008!!!

  28. The Northeast Dilemma says:

PP – most liberals don’t have common sense or a sense of humor.

To say Republicans are not intellectual an outright lie.

The sad fact of the matter is Democrats are the ones who are stupid. You have your elitist like P & P and most people on this site and then you have the people that can’t help themselves like the poor souls in New Orleans. The knowledge and wage gap within the Democratic Party is staggering. AND that gap is based solely on stupidity. So yes, P & P, maybe you are intellectual. But, that does little for the other spectrum of your party who’s stupidity you gleefully exploit.

  29. Eurogiest says:

    NED,
Your spiel regarding democrats is well known, but what about the intelligence of moderate Republicans who have been continuously pushed to the left over the past five years. Where do you rate Conservatives like Pat Buchanan, who has been bashing Bush on every issue from Iraq to CAFTA to Katrina? Is he stupid also, simply for defying the Smirking Chimp?

  30. Rappin' Rasputin says:

For a Repugnicator and Bush Crime Family proponent to say that Democrats are stupid is a little like the death wine of a polecat in the middle of the road stinkin’ the night air.

  31. Peace Lover says:

Oh man that is funny stuff. It’s like a 10 year old watching a sporting event and always cheering for the team that’s in the lead no matter how many lead changes there are. The Repulicans only praise something if it is in thier favor. If it’s going bad they ignore or deflect.

Funny, NED, how many states that voted Republican are on the lower end of the intelligence scale. And NED, who has been in charge in the last 5 years expoiting the stupid and poor? It’s ok NED you won’t answer that. It’s called a rhetorical question.

  32. Rappin' Rasputin says:

For you, and you only, Condosleezza:

“You got a dead skunk poll in the middle of the political highway, stinkin’ the whole nation.”

    And another little ditty:

“Can anyone tell me what polls mean? Does anybody really care? Can anyone tell me when a poll should be quoted? Does anybody really care?”

    And yet another little ditty:

“All my sugar daddies live in Texas…that’s why I wear my slinky boots in Baghdad, boys!”

  33. Terrytheturtle says:

Ned’s still smarting from his pinup girl Ann Coulter questioning his manhood. http://radio.weblogs.com/0107946/2005/08/23.html#a4836

His behavior here is just a reaction to that rejection.

  34. wisedup says:

get that woman a white cane/red tipped as she is BLIND

  35. Elvis says:

    NED,

Why is it that when the polls don’t look good for their side, people say they aren’t important? But when they do look good, they say they are the most important?

How can you generalize so many people by saying that “Get off the kool-aid, people. You understand so little about politics” when speaking about “democrats?” You don’t even know who we are or what we do for a living. You don’t know our education history or our background.

Throwing a group of people that you don’t know into a bucket and labeling them is not only prejudice, but its one of the purist forms of ignorance.

Remember this NED; politics is power, nothing more. It’s all about money and power.

Are you trying to live vicariously through your precious “GOP people” so that you feel like YOU have the power? If you are, then I hate to break the news to you, but you have no power what so ever.

“States are not moral agents” -Chomsky

  36. Impeach Bush says:

    NED,

Oh, please. You mean to tell me the right doesn’t “gleefully exploit” poor, white southerners by wrapping itself in the flag, God, 9/11 and any other jingoistic pretence their money-drunk think tanks can dream up? Muddle, confuse and exploit is the mantra of the right. How else can you explain why people would vote against their own self-interest? What’s the matter with Kansas, hell, what’s the matter with the whole country?

The wage gap on the right between the CEO of Wal-mart and the cashier working for $5.15 an hour is pretty staggering don’t you think? The CEO knows why he votes for the right: tax breaks, sweetheart deals, and continued corruption. All the cashier knows is she “don’t like them baby killing, America hatin’ liberals.” Say it with me: muddle, confuse and exploit.

  37. Fixinator says:

“O’REILLY: How do you assess President Bush’s falling poll numbers? He’s at the lowest level of his presidency now. Why do you think that’s happening?
    RICE: WAAA I DONT KNO”

    Fixed.

“RICE: Look, the president — first of all, LOOK AT DA POLLZ, THEY R LEIK HIGH LIKE ME. Apparently teh numbers show we suck.”

  38. Zookeeper says:

She’s too busy monitoring Georgie’s potty breaks.

  39. kjlovell says:

I would like to point out that this administration (any level) appearing on a show like the O’Lielly factor shows that they love spin. O’Lielly is like the Jerry Springer for the working poor.

I don’t find it difficult to believe that Condi sleezy rice suddenly can’t assess poll numbers. They have ignored reality for 6 plus years. This pRESIDENT has said in his hick drawl that he doesn’t govern by polls. I am quite sure he and his cronies will stay the course, be vigiliant.

It is safe to say that this administration is indeed “in it’s last throes”.

Between hurricane Cindy and hurricane Katrina Dumbya is tanking. (laura the school marm… that is Kat Kat Kat Katrina)

In the last two days have seen several different interviews with residents of N.O. that say after the hurricane they heard an explosion and that is when the flooding began. If so, that would explain the “experts” at FEMA sitting on their thumbs for a few days before getting Chertoff’s OK to go in.

I did a little looking into that and it seems that in 1927 during a rather bad time down there they discussed blowing up the levees to spare N.O. at the expense of St. Bernards parish.

I did a little more looking into the claim that the waters breached the concrete levee. It seems that engineers say that the water travels parallel to the concrete and the hydraulic forces would have made the water spill over the top, not poke a hole in the side.

I suspect that the Americans on both sides are fed up and that reflects the all-time-low poll numbers. I suspect his real poll numbers are far lower than reported.

Dumbya took responsibility for the failures in LA, kinda funny because I think his filthy fingerprints are all over it.

  40. The Northeast Dilemma says:

#40 – I am too busy reading the poll that shows nearly 60% of America wants John Roberts confirmed as Chief Justice. Despite rantings by ultra-liberal Joey Xerox, Teddy Woman Killer, Dick “anti-troop” Durbin and Leaky Leahy.

    John Roberts – CONFIRMED!!!

  41. Terrytheturtle says:

#41, how’s it working out with Ann now dude?

  42. Peace Lover says:

John Roberts – CONFIRMED ultra religious lawyer not interested in rights of individuals.

  43. Peace Lover says:

NED. why the hell are you quoting polls? You said “These polls that you fools so desperately hang onto mean NOTHING.” Seems you are just as foolish as Condi.

  44. Peace Lover says:

  48. Concerned Citizen says:

Well, Northeast Buttplug..it’s pretty safe to say that you’re not welcome here, scram you troll!!

  49. Koolhandluke says:

Thank God for Polls! Only Condi could find something good about a 38 percent approval rating. Ok 42 percent approval rating. If my boss gave me a 43 percent approval rating, I’d be very worried. Oh “W” doesn’t have to worry, that’s right he’s only got his legacy to worry about. He can only lose control of the Congress in the next election. That’s not much to think about right.

Who needs enemies when you got friends like Condi and Karl Rove to tell you 38 or 42 percent approval rating it great in your second term. Not to mention your handling of Katrina, in which you tell Mike Brown, he’s doing a great job when people are dying from all sorts of things in New Orleans. GREAT JOB GUYS!!! Keep up the good work! I think all of you in this Administration are doing a great job. Don’t worry about he sinking polls that show movement and we are headed in the right direction. http://www.plainnews.blogspot.com

  50. Jay says:

I have dubbed the Bush tenure in the White House the “half-mast” Presidency. American flags have spent more time at half-mast since these guys took office than they have flying full-mast. In fact (hope your listening John Bolton)….we could tear off the top 10 feet of every flagpole in this country and it wouldn’t make one bit of difference. Thanks Dubya!

  51. Ryan Neat says:

    Sara,

To a stupid republican, anyone who can read and think for themselves without watching faux news or reading the free republic to have an opinion or a ‘talking point’ is an elitist. This expression shows how on the one side they call us ’stupid’, yet on the other side they put us on a pedestal. This cognitive disconnect is consistent with their futile effort to reconcile the lies the WANT to believe, from the truths that come from us. It’s not something their pea brains seem capable (or in some cases willing) of handling.

  52. duh says:

    Dick “anti-troop” Durbin,
where the hell U come up with that dumb ass NED? Shows
what a foolyou are. While I think Durbin is a chicken shit for backing down – he spoke the truth. It is fascist boot lickers like you who repeat idiocy uttered by Limbaugh as if there is any truth in it. Answer the question NED if you have any balls (even of you are a woman, hard to tell) – why do you think torture is an American virture?

  53. Sean Hannity says:

We’re torturing them over there, so we don’t have to torture them over here….

  54. e_five says:

It’s so funny to watch Republicans gloss over the faultlines in this administration, some of which have been caused by the very hubris and cockiness they used to celebrate. I keep thinking of that Monty Python song, “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life,” sung by folks on crucifixes.

  55. Massachusetts Liberal says:

I’m sooooooo sick of the elitist tag. It’s another example (See #8) of the right seeing their own sins in others. The two Presidents Bush went to Yale AND Harvard, and they are very, very rich. Jimmy Carter was rich too, but he made his money farming. JFK went to Harvard, was rich with ill-gotten, inherited money, but I would not call him an elitist. The ultimate elitist: Grover Norquist. He doesn’t want anybody to have anything except the tiny minority of privileged oligarchs. Oh, isn’t that what ELITE means??

  56. Massachusetts Liberal says:

Great post Sara (#51). Too funny. Here’s another funny concept: Dick Cheney, man of the people.

  57. kjlovell says:

Dumbya doing an ivestigation is like Maxwell Smart doing it.

    Missed it by that much!

I saw how the senators voted on the independent investigation. Buzzflash has the link.

All the Democrats voted yea, except for the one that didn’t vote.

And, as you would expect ALL the repugs voted no, except the repugnican from LA that didn’t vote.

    No suprises there.

Buzzflash also has a link to The New York Times article:

NYT’s Brooks revealed that “from Day One,” the Bush White House “decided our public relations is not going to be honest” — why hasn’t he written about this?

It is a good read with links.

Also, Buzzflash has links to interviews of 2 survivors that said they heard a big boom after the hurricane had passed, and afterward St. Bernard’s Parrish began to flood. The head of St. Bernard’s Parrish gave an interview and also said he heard the big boom after the hurricane.

Dumbya doesn’t want an ivestigation into 9/11 (’cause his brother Marvin’s company was in the twin towers 9/10 installing “security devices”. When Marvin’s nanny (not his, his childrens) threatend him about coming forward, she was crushed by her car in early October 2001. Google Bertha Champagne.

  58. greg273 says:

How is it that Bush’s lie of “we will not engage in nation building” been forgotten by so many? It was a clear dig at Clintons mis-adventures in Kosovo, yet all the time Bush and Co. KNEW that their war was on the horizon. The gullubility of the red state morons is truly staggering. Rove, the master of spin and all things politico, knows EXACTLY how to manipulate the masses. Remember the 2004 campaign ad with the ‘wolves circling’? A classic example of liminal and subliminal advertising. AKA, propaganda. Playing to fear is the oldest trick in the book, and the GOP has mastered the technique.

  59. Michelle Vann says:

The real terror about this war in IRAQ is Bush’s idiotic decision and lies to continue it and sacrafice americans and waste our money.
