Wal-Mart store wins Arbor Day award

despite killing 83 trees and destroying a five-acre wetland to make room for a parking lot. It was the only entry.

You must be talking about the Wal-Mart they built less than a mile from my house and even closer to an elementary school. It was constructed after filling in 3/4 of a cypress swamp up against the rear property line of $70,000 condos. I’d like to blame Wal-Mart, and do most of the time, but the real crime was committed by our city council. Way to go, OLDSMAR!!!

  2. Skid says:

Putting trees and wetland critters out of their misery.

The Walmart near me is situated below a golf course that’s on a hill and the place has won all sorts of eco awards.

You should see how ridiculous this place is. As if the little birdys would want to propogate to the sights and sounds of the air handling units on top of the roofs, which are clearly in sight. You almost wish that Al Qeida would make it a target. (well not really, that would mean that Bush would have to come into town for a healing press conference)

  5. Marie says:

Walmart is becoming a blight on cities and towns. The cities and towns are not blameless though. They allow those ugly stores in, putting out local businesses, paving huge parking lots, and creating traffic, noise, dirt, etc.
I can’t even tell you how many years ago I read an article about a fledgling company called Wal-Mart and how it was predicted that exactly this scenario would take place across America. At that time there was a strong argument that this was going to bring the market to the people. The opponent predicted what we all object to today.

  6. Brian says:

I have an issue with this post. I hate Walmart as much as the next guy, but all new developement calls for planting of trees to replace destroyed ones. They might be elsewhere, but they are somewhere.

  7. cmw says:

I just heard that Cindy Sheehan was arrested in NYC – anybody have any info?

  8. cmw says:

    Susan
Are you out there? I heard Cindy Sheehan was arrested today in NYC. Do you have any info? I’m calling NYPD numbers to try and find out more.

  9. cmw says:

If anyone is out there – Cindy Sheehan was not arrested, but instead was, for want of a better word, harrassed by NYPD – I’m trying to get more details –

but here are phone numbers – she was harrassed in the 13th precinct of Manhattan which includes Union Square park
Phone numbers for the precinct are below

    http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/pct/phn013.html

I called the precinct number and expressed my outrage at her treatment and was told i didn’t have the entire story, and to get the entire story to call DCPI (whatever that is) at 646-610-7800 – my guess is DCPI stands for Deputy Commissioner something or other –

No one answers at this time of night –

    Everyone call
Anti-war protestors like Cindy Sheehan should not be harrassed, and unless we stand up and say so, it will continue.

    cmw,

I also posted this on the other thread. It appears her handlers were able to get her away in time.

  11. Charlie Foxtrot says:

Uh, Cindy. You need a permit like everyone else. Now go stalk Hillary.

  12. Ryan Neat says:

Another crooked bush official taken down. The Bush White House budget chief was arrested for corruption – too bad they couldn’t get Cheney and Bush for all of their sleazy no-bid business with KBR/Halliburton (otherwise known in texas as ‘Burn and Loot’… Oh well, guess we’ll just have to accept one crooked cronie at a time – that’s 2 this week!

  13. Ryan Neat says:

I hate to see this happening in afghanistan, but apparently the voter turnout was horrific. So much for the grand experiment in democracy. I fear Iraq will probably slide down the same path. As much as I wish it were that easy to install a democracy – the NeoCons are pollyana fools with inept methods…

  14. Taco Loco says:

    PLEASE DON’T SHOP AT WAL-MART

  15. Now That's Progress says:

Corruption, Porn and Reform, Oh My!

With a Bush official arrested, a new, top-priority FBI Porn Squad forming, and NASA going back to the future for some reason, I could think of a million things to say

  16. Pablo in Mexico says:

Hey FOXTROT. why dont you stick your thumb up your ass and hop down to the nearest Wal-Mart and buy some licorice?

I hear its good for the nerves and the brain, the latter of which you were cheated out of.

  17. Susan says:

100,000 Walmart employees are suing Walmart for 66 million bucks. They claim they were denied lunch breaks.

Heard it on WGN Morning News this a.m.

cmw, didn’t hear anything about Cindy, thanks for info.

  18. Trevor Adams says:
