It’s a reference to the traitor Chang who in star trek started a war because peace made the klingons weak. It’s related to the republican myth of the weak liberals – it’s really just a way to say they believe they should be exploitative traitors – but we already knew that.

What they don’t know is from a psychological standpoint the chang character was this way because he felt like a failure in the new world, and he was ruled by his own insecurities and shortcomings. They actually picked the correct myth, for the wrong reasons, but the unlightened usually do.

It doesn’t sound like he’s joking. It doesn’t sound like his father’s Chang. In fact, the only connection between this and his father’s Chang is the name.

If you have evidence that it is a family joke then please tell us. If you have any thing other than supposition please let us know.

I didn’t say he was crazy at any point. I do find it scary that someone who believes in Chang is in a position of responsibility.

Yes Bryan, I’ve heard of Google, and I looked for information there… But I found no references to the Legendary Chang outside of this story. If he was that legendary surely someone else would have mentioned him.

“In a 1989 Washington Post article on the politics of tennis, former President George H.W. Bush was quoted as threatening to “unleash Chang” as a means of intimidating other players.

The saying was apparently quite popular with Gov. Bush’s father, and referred to a legendary warrior named Chang who was called upon to settle political disputes in Chinese dynasties of yore.

The phrase has evolved, under Gov. Jeb Bush’s use, to mean the need to fix conflicts or disagreements over an issue. Faced with a stalemate, the governor apparently “unleashes Chang” as a rhetorical device, signaling it’s time to stop arguing and start agreeing.”

It’s like weddings, the actual “meat” of the wedding is the legal statement (nobody knows of any reason why not), the verbal contract “I do”, and the pronouncement. The rest is just ceremony to pad a five minute rite (maximum) out to a “more appropriate” length.
