Last night on Fox News, right-wing talking head Michael Reagan tried to smear President Clinton’s disaster relief efforts:
Michael Reagan: First of all, I don’t think the president had anything to apologize for. FEMA was at Katrina quicker than they were at Andrew or Floyd or any one of the hurricanes you can name before that, when Bill Clinton was President of the United States. Nobody was calling for [Clinton FEMA director James Lee] Witt to be taken down. Nobody was calling on Bill Clinton to be thrown out of office because of it.
FACT: Hurricane Andrew happened under President George Herbert Walker Bush’s watch. The Hurricane hit in August 1992, months before Clinton was elected.
FACT: On September 14, 1999, two days before Hurricane Floyd hit, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette outlined FEMA’s preparations for the coming storm:
FEMA officials “said they were ready to roll and could have supplies into an affected area within hours after Floyd’s passage. FEMA emergency response centers have been activated in Atlanta and Washington, and it has representatives at state emergency centers from Florida to North Carolina…Meanwhile, FEMA has positioned ice, water, plastic sheeting, cots, tents, and emergency food and medial supplies in Atlanta, where they can be delivered within hours wherever Floyd hits land.â€

Republicans have become more pathetically desperate than ever as Bush’s poll numbers tank.
They’re circling the wagons around the Little Cowboy, but a curious thing is happening: no one is listening or paying them any mind.
CNN poll: Bush’s approval rating 40%.
The Bush era is over.
September 20th, 2005 at 10:04 amIs anyone else having trouble accessing the Crooks and Liars web site? I get a message saying “Access forbidden!”
http://www.crooksandliars.com/
Also, what’s up with New York Times not allowing us to read editorials, unless we pay?
September 20th, 2005 at 10:11 amI get the same message at C&L. What happened? Anyone know?
September 20th, 2005 at 10:13 amAlso, what’s up with New York Times not allowing us to read editorials, unless we pay?
They’ve gone to a fee-for-service access system.
I guess the Old Gray Lady has a death wish.
September 20th, 2005 at 10:14 amAmen, Dartanyon. How this creep and Ron Jr. were raised in the same household by the same parents, simply boggles the mind.
Yes, you can smell the desperation. Now is the time to step on their windpipe, stop the airflow and put them out of their damn misery. They have done enough damage with their greedy, hateful, divisive goals. Time for the grownups to step in and get us out of this mess.
Think Progress, you guys are doing a GREAT job. Keep punching and don’t stop until they are on the canvas and bloody.
September 20th, 2005 at 10:15 amMichael Reagan is a POS who can’t make a decent living except for the honorariums he gets paid for appearing on Fox News. As if he has any knowledge of anything! A political has been who never was.
September 20th, 2005 at 10:15 amRon Reagan Jr. is a such a gentleman and he’s a liberal. It’s odd he turned out so well growing up with parents like St. Reagan and Witchcraft Nancy.
September 20th, 2005 at 10:25 amDoes anyone with a functioning brain even watch fox news anymore? It’s a joke.
September 20th, 2005 at 10:32 amWhat a hack. Clinton was right on with his comments. I might add he’s the only Dem speaking out. I guess all others are more worried about political standing than taking a stand. This is the time that the Dems should be going for the kill, yet no fight, no leadership. The moderates have muzzeled Dean while they play to the middle of the road trying to attracted the disenchanted Repugs. Thank God Bill still has the balls to speak out.
September 20th, 2005 at 10:33 amYes, “Clinton was right on with his comments.” What I don’t get is why he gave Bush cover in the beginning by standing with him & daddy Bush, not to mention “let them eat cake” Babs. Arianna says it well:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ arianna-huffington/ bill-clintons-muddled-at_b_7586.html
September 20th, 2005 at 10:39 amFOXNews(GOP-TV) is like a parody cable network populated by all sorts of hyper-articulated, rightwing, nutcases who clearly have no concept of history, science or reason.
September 20th, 2005 at 10:40 amI’d say I am flabbergasted at the fibbing and the misinformation but I’m not. This is precisely why we are in the hole that we are in. Blind, unquestioning loyalty, even in the face of overwhelming contradictory evidence. Bush-bots will stop at nothing to defend their leader.
September 20th, 2005 at 10:41 am#8 - Keith H. - A whole lot of people watch Fox news religiously (no pun intended…)
Which paints a sad picture of functioning brains in our country…

September 20th, 2005 at 10:47 amHas anyone found out where the Democratic Party is hiding? When you do please post the whereabouts so we can smoke them out. Did a spaceship come down and remove their collective spines?
September 20th, 2005 at 10:47 amReagan knew that Hurricane Andrew came when Poppa Bush was president. Another example of fixing the facts around the policy.
September 20th, 2005 at 10:51 amFox, and this putrid administration is sickening. The only time I’ve ever heard the truth spoken on Fox was when the hurricane survivors were on the bridge after days of trudging thru the mucky contamination, with no food or water. Sheppard Smith did a good job of relating the despiration of the people, and asking why there was no one there for them. He was the one exception. My opinion is that Bush needs to keep his self out of there for now. He’s hopeless.

September 20th, 2005 at 11:04 amOne curious point though, in the UK, Ruperts mags are ripping Bush a new asshole on a daily basis. Strange that here in the USA, his cable network is a wholly owned subsidiary of the RNC, but in Britain, his posture is less than Bush-positive.
September 20th, 2005 at 11:06 amYou guys don’t understand - Clinton was responsible for Ruby Ridge, so why not for the Andrew response?
September 20th, 2005 at 11:22 amIt’s that “liberal” media that the trolls always speak of. They wish.
September 20th, 2005 at 11:28 amHi progessive and proud - I haven’t been to these posts lately, so I’m sure you probably reported on your trip to save the animals in LA. Could you just briefly say how it went? Thanks.

September 20th, 2005 at 11:42 amthe Murdochpig loves to support all fascists, but his favorite fascist is Rupert Murdoch and he will go for the money before anything else.
In Britain Bush is seen -rightfully- as the moron he truly is. Even amongst British conservatives. So there is no point in propping up the Idiot-in-Cheif. There is also no point to do so politically. It doesn’t matter whether the British public supports Bush or not so know need to misinform them.
I was in Germany during first days of Katrina’s devastation and watched BBC world and Murdochpig’s SkyTV. Unlike Faux news skytv didn’t not try to spin for Bush, but they were soft of him compared to the BBC.
This also relates to Blair’s bitch session with Murdoch when he said the BBC was “america-hating.” That was a Blair projecting. Blair has fallen into the trap that says to criticize Bush is to hate America. They were critical of Bush’s inept response, but the BBC had nothing but empathy for the Americans effecting by Katrina.
Blair is a liar.
Blair is a liar.

Don’t tell me, the BBC doesn’t hate America they just hate Bush. Blair is actually a pretty sharp cookie. He doesn’t want your country to end up on the short end of the stick when we divide up the earth, like Germany and France AKA the “Axis of Weasels”
September 20th, 2005 at 11:50 am#27 - the Dane “THE BUSH ERROR IS OVER!” Good one - We can only hope so for ALL our sakes!
September 20th, 2005 at 11:51 amRon Jr. and Mike had different mothers. Mike was dropped on his head too many times as an infant and it has just gotten worse throughout the rest of his life.

September 20th, 2005 at 12:00 pmWhat are you talking about? Blair is not the leader of my country. I leave in a leaderless nation called the USA.
Mike Reagan was adopted. I think from an alcoholic birth mother. He shows signs of fetal alcohol syndrome. Not many neurons in that brain are firing.
September 20th, 2005 at 12:01 pmDane,
You like many other liberals on this site are cruel and nasty. You have a closed mind. You are filled with hate. You believe every conspiracy theory out there that explains what is wrong with your party. I used to think that I wanted some of you to join the conservative movement that has been sweeping the nation for the last thirty years but now I don’t. You are a pathetic loser. You must have been dropped quite often as a baby.

September 20th, 2005 at 12:30 pmOh yeah, FEMA was already for a Florida hurrican, but where in the hell was FEMA for Katrina?
September 20th, 2005 at 12:34 pmI love Bill Clinton! He was giving an interview and so cheerfully and politely said that you are obligated to place someone as head of FEMA that has some experience and qualifications.
Always articulate, always to the point and always nice about it.
I have never seen him flipping the bird to anyone. However dumbya (just the pics I have) has done it at least 5 times.
I guess dumbya learn’t it at Harvard. It must be part of their Post Graduate program.

September 20th, 2005 at 12:45 pmSad part is that some will go to great lengths arguing that Mikie Reagan’s lies are true. Mostly because of a great hatred for Bill…as someone else has said..how long can they possibly pull the blame Bill or better than Bill crap? (Forever unless the MSM steps up.) Unless you’re very wealthy you were way better off under Bill’s administration…know it or not. (Bill kinda sold the working person down the road too, such is the reason Bill is hated by many, but Bushco declared and is winning class war.)
#16 The Democrat spines are owned by Karl. He probably has more “poop” on every one of them than they want out publicly. Politics is a dirty game. Karl plays dirtier than any political figure ever. He’s a genius…an evil one…but a genius like it or not.
September 20th, 2005 at 1:05 pmMrWrong divulged he’s a KKK white supremecist last night and posted this racist doctrine about black people all being criminals from some nazi site. He’s beyond a troll, he’s truly a sick and dangerous individual. Everyone ignore this clinically insane beast of a man!
September 20th, 2005 at 1:13 pmEveryone on the far right like to defend the reagans and nixons, because both of them were associated with the John Birch society in southern california. For those who don’t know that group - they’re white supremist radical crazy people. That’s one of the reason I never voted for Reagan - despite the fact that his acting was probably better as ‘the president’, than it ever was in one of his crappy movies… I judged him by his results, which were incredibly destructive for this nation…
September 20th, 2005 at 1:16 pmWell, this post is going a little too far. FEMA’s response to Floyd in 1999 was atrocious. They did pretty good with prep, but afterwards the charges of racism were flying in North Carolina, too. FEMA put dozens of families in trailers on top of a toxic waste dump. It was hideous, I saw it.
FEMA has always been a political patronage football. Some administrations have been worse than others. But in our haste to give Bush his rightful come-uppance for a dreadful job, let’s not forget FEMA’s failures in the past.
Facing South blog had a good post on this recently …
September 20th, 2005 at 1:43 pmReagan was an asshole. He left tens of thousands of citizens homeless and stranded on the streets when he shutdown funding for psychiatric facilities. That was the legacy he left America. He had the same demented fiscal policy as Chimpus, cut federal dollars force the payment on the state or local community if they want a public program. I almost puked everyday when the Republicans held the burial of the king that summer of 2004. The only thing that I can find good to say about him is that he’s dead.
September 20th, 2005 at 1:44 pmI-Right-I
September 20th, 2005 at 1:45 pmWhen Hillary Clinton is our leader in 2008 we will finally have someone who can speak English and govern with intelligence. Until then, we have the right wing monkey brigade. (why the christian right refuses to believe in Darwin’s theory of evolution is beyond me. They vote for primates all the time.)
Dane,
I like your sentiment, but Hillary the Hawk’s not my choice. I think Russ Feingold is ‘da Dem man’ in 2008.’
September 20th, 2005 at 2:29 pmI agree, St. Reagan was a complete asshole.
Also, I want my money back from Witchcraft Nancy for her psychic readings from Joan Quigley. The stupid bitch was paying Quigley $5,000 a pop and having up to 3 readings a day while she ran the country.
Was she spending her own moeny? Nooooooooooo. It came directly from the US Treasury.
Why do these Republicans always have a link to the occult?
September 20th, 2005 at 2:31 pmdartanyon
I agree, but Hillary was thrown out there by I-Right-I. So, that is why I used her name.
What I do love about Hillary is that she is the bogeyman (bogeyperson?) for the right wingnut set. I love to mention her as president because it gets their panties in a twist.
September 20th, 2005 at 2:57 pm#46 Dartanyon,
I agree that SENATOR RUSS FEINGOLD should be the right choose for President in 2006. GO!GO! RUSS FEINGOLD!!!!
September 20th, 2005 at 3:20 pm[…] What is going on here, in the walnut-sized lizard brain of conservatism, is that Tom DeLay’s recent claim that there is no pork whatsoever left in the federal budget is difficult to square with the fact that discretionary spending has soared under the Bush administration, that we are running record federal deficits, and that there appears to be no political problem that Republicans think can’t be solved by throwing a few hundred billion dollars at it. Less quantitatively, but most importantly, there is the post-Katrina sense in the country that we seem to be paying about the same price as always for a much cheaper brand of government service. (You can tell it’s a problem because they’ve started blaming the Clenis.) What’s up with that? Must be the NEA leaving their computers on overnight again. […]
September 20th, 2005 at 3:32 pmI don’t like to use this word, but Michael Reagan is an IDIOT! He is so very uninformed. It is just unbelievable that this guy gets any face time anywhere!
September 20th, 2005 at 3:38 pm#44
So you would rather have a government with handouts that never end. I think what we are witnessing in New Orleans is how well that has worked. People do not have to be dependent on the government for their well being and it is really a crime on how the war on poverty has treated the nation’s poor. You are in the minority with your views on Reagan. Look at his legacy compared to Clinton’s or Carter’s. Those were pathetic excuses for a president.
September 20th, 2005 at 4:26 pmNo Randy, I’d rather see a government for the people not a government for a select group of the ultra right rich. That’s what a liberal thinks, we take care of all, not just the select.
The problem with you shitheads is that you don’t realize, or maybe deny, that everyone can’t do for themselves equally. I guess you don’t realize that there are inequalities in education, access to housing, access to job training, access to f**king food and water. Why do you think almost 100,000 people couldn’t get out of NO? Christ man, look in their faces, do you think they wanted to stay? They had not choice, they were abandon. In your crappy world, you make it yourself or not at all, and I’m sure your at the top of the food chain right? I doubt it, your just too dumb to realize your a schill for the rich, wake-up.
You selfish bastard, you are pathetic. After all the evidence that has been presented you are still dumb enough to support this fascist reich? You are an enemy of America and a traitor to democracy. Oh yeah, I forgot, your King, Ron Ray Guns, left a record deficit just like Chimp Boy will. And a failed star war program that chimpus is still chasing. Like I said, Reagin is dead, one less republican.
September 20th, 2005 at 5:21 pmThe thing about Randy and the other trolls, if he is extremely rich than I understand his reasoning - greed. If, however, he is middle class or struggling from paycheck to paycheck, than he is just stupid. Stupid is as stupid votes. Ah well - soon.
September 20th, 2005 at 5:26 pmprogressive and proud - Just asking again, or maybe you can direct me to a former post where you may have reported about your trip to NOLA on behalf of the animals. Bless you for that! As I said earlier, I’ve been away from these posts for a while, so I must have missed anything you related. Thanks.
September 20th, 2005 at 5:33 pm“So you would rather have a government with handouts that never end. ”
That’s a nonsense argument. If cheap republicans like you stopped undermined the economy there would be less need for a social safety net. People rise out of poverty every time there’s a democratic president, and they fall back into poverty every time there’s a republican.
“I think what we are witnessing in New Orleans is how well that has worked. People do not have to be dependent on the government for their well being and it is really a crime on how the war on poverty has treated the nation’s poor. ”
This is such a right wing stupid argument. When people are too poor to afford a bus ticket, and the ones that tried to ‘walk’ out were shot at by white neighborhoods - you’ve pretty much undermined your argument as stupid propaganda.
“You are in the minority with your views on Reagan. ”
And yet the majority of the world used to think it was flat - and science and evidence proved the contrary. Just like the majority of christians don’t believe in evolution even though it is proven. Reagan created and funded alqueda. He undermined carter and cut a treasonous illegal deal to sell Iran weapons for the return of the hostages. He sold WMDs to Iraq. He oversaw illegal wars in central america that were funded through illegal drug trades. Reagan was a dirty president who fought dirty wars and racked up massive american debts through irresponsible spending.
“Look at his legacy compared to Clinton’s or Carter’s. Those were pathetic excuses for a president.”
And yet Clinton provided over one of the largest economic boom in history, and single handedly pulled more people out of poverty than all 4 republican presidents of the previous 20 years combined… And Carter managed to get peace between egypt and israel, while republicans still pretended to know something about foreign policy. He also worked dilligently to control spending, compared to Reagan who followed and spent like a strung out crack ho.
September 20th, 2005 at 7:30 pmThe only reason Tony Blair is George Bush’s lap dog is because he’s been promised a highly lucrative “consulting” position with the Carlyle Group when he’s finished bullshitting the British.
Michael Reagan is just cashing in on papa Ronnie’s name. He offers nothing substantive to the populace.
That may be why U Wrong U loves him and those like him so much. And why do you think he spends so much time here at Think Progress? My thinking is that all he gets on the Repugnant blogs all he gets is rubber stamp postings. I think he likes to be proven wrong every time he posts.
September 20th, 2005 at 7:37 pm#53 Way to go! David!
September 20th, 2005 at 8:42 pmWell, there are at least three of here who would like to see Russ Feingold in 2008. Go and multiply.
September 20th, 2005 at 8:44 pm(I have been thinking all along that Randy was a girl!)
This guy doesn’t get my respect. Didn’t like Ronnie either, I lived in Calif. when the john birch bunch was popular. Yikes! It torked my jaw when for day’s we had to hunt for something good on the tv that wasen’t regan funeral business. He got as much coverage as the pope. The damage his econemy did to our country one would have thought we would have learned our lesson. Happy note to the right wingers here. Carter and Clinton can go any where in the world. respected, well thought of and good statesmen. Bush on the other hand has to be guarded and surrounded by props or hid out in secret spots away from the public or any one who does not agree with his mad man ideals. No one in the world respects him or likes him..He’s crazy…..Blessings
September 20th, 2005 at 8:46 pmSharon,
I share your feelings. I always console myself by remembering that democratic presidents actually won both of the last 2 elections, so the people are smarter than anyone gives them credit for! We just need to keep the crooks from rigging the next elections and I truly believe that the people will continue to choose wisely.
September 20th, 2005 at 9:21 pmI wonder if we can start a website to solicit funds earmarked strictly for an investigation of Diebold. There’s something rotten in those machines! I’d be willing to bet that if you could get your hands on one and vote 1000 times democratic and 0 repugnant the tally wouldn’t be 100% democratic.
September 20th, 2005 at 9:30 pmMrEvil,
Did you see all of the links about the deep throat from diebold this week? Bradblog has a whole thing on how both the machines and the tally computers are rigged. I have lots of voting analysis websites, and links where people file afidavits saying that the machine changed their votes in front of their eyes! There were 10s of thousands of voting complaints filed in november that included issues like this. And 3 weeks ago 2 of the ohio election officials were indicted for voter fraud they perpetrated on the night of the election!
Do you want me to repost the links for you?
September 20th, 2005 at 11:42 pm#40, Clinton sold the working people down the road…
Watch Faux News much?
I and many of my friends made way more money and actually had insurance while PRESIDENT Clinton was in the white house.
Since dumbya took office, it is hold on, buckle up barbara, this is going to be a rough ride.
come on, either you’re with the economy or against it!
Has the tax breaks for the rich made you put more into savings?
Answer honestly, if you can.

Braindead Meadia Michael Reagan….?
September 21st, 2005 at 3:13 amPar for the course. Look at the conservatives who try to blame Clinton (and better yet, Janet Reno) for the Ruby Ridge incident.
September 21st, 2005 at 7:32 amColmes should just run down all of the president’s poll numbers one night. You guys know, the president is below 40% in every thing except terrorism(the folks must think he invented that term). Hannity’s head would just pop off mid way through. I mean, it would just explode!
This guy is right where we want him now. He is a puncking bag that every single dem can use in the ‘06 elections. Each dem would be wise to look at how tough Paul Hackett was in the Ohio 2nd and how the rank and file shelled out big time loot
September 21st, 2005 at 9:55 am#67, to see Heir hannity’s head explode….. for that I would watch faux news.
When his head explodes I would hope that o’lielly would be seated withing colateral damage range.

Hannity would suffer no ill effects from his head exploding. As is the case with most conservatives, his head is not a vital organ.
September 21st, 2005 at 7:36 pm#69 Looks like the smirking chimp is trying to live up to Ray-gun’s record. I just suspect he has achieved several of Ray-gun’s accomplishments.
Wasn’t it Ray-gun that thought that big red button on his desk said LUNCH? Looks like chimpy thinks it says LUNCH too. Duck and cover!
The one item in your list I didn’t know was that dear sweet Nancy had the reputation of giving the best BJ in Hollywood. Bet you a dollar to a wounded soldier that the frigid Laura (I’ll kill my boyfriend) Welch Bush gives a pretty mean BJ too. After all her mouth seems to always be open.
September 22nd, 2005 at 12:08 pmAnd what are we DOING?
Energizing the base is one thing - too much of this stuff is just masturbation.
If you are not working on something to help crush the Republicans and win back the House in 2006, please find something and start now.
Do something real. Please I beg you.
Right now in an empty strip mall in Your Town, USA there are 25 conservative volunteers stuffing envelopes from a curiously cheap and accurate donor mailing list and raising money for the fascist Right. Maybe their issue is taxes or abortion or guns or any number of things but they will raise money for their candidate and spread their vile lies in a highly effective manner.
And if we are not careful and very diligent in taking back our government from this minority of selfish or deluded individuals, we could lose everything.
Please do something. Please do it NOW.
Donate your time and money to a local Congressional candidate. Don’t wait to do this. Early money has twice the value of late donations.
Don’t like Fox? Their local stations are up for license review like all others. If you don’t believe they are acting in the public interest, let the FCC know. A big fat file of complaints could help someone else get that license at renewal time.
Like to write? Write the advertisers on Fox. These fascist propagandists are so outside the main stream and the companies who advertise there should know how you feel.
Call a conservative talk show and represent. Don’t expect to reason with them. Just remind them that there are millions of us who know they are full of
The BIG LIE form of propaganda invented by the Nazis and perfected by the NeoCons requires you squelch dissent and truth. Say it loud and proud to everyone who will listen. If people only hear the lie, they start to believe it.
Talk to your neighbors. Find out who agrees with you and who needs some convincing. If each of us changed just one mind, all Democrats would win in a landslide and Puddin’ Head would be out of office in the most amazing impeachment trial ever.
Please do something now.
Thank you for your attention.
September 22nd, 2005 at 12:51 pmArnold,
Many of us do all of those things, the problem is that they have so many propagandist lies, and more formed daily, that we have to hit them everywhere. And frankly an online forum reaches more people, more quickly, than all of the things you talk about. Online we can not only say it, we can cite references people can look at themselves. We can shut down their lies with facts.
September 24th, 2005 at 3:42 amGetting back to M. Reagan’s inaccurate crap: Although I am a Minnesotan and live in Minnesota now, I lived in North Carolina during Hurricane Dennnis, which hit us twice (circled around and got us again) with about 18 inches of rain, and then Hurricane Floyd a week later, adding another 20 inches of rain (in our poor saturated sandy soil). It was horrible; about 20% of my city was under water and has since been condemned. Other towns were completely under; coffins floating, people trapped. FEMA under Clinton was GREAT! On top of it all. It was simply horrific but Clinton had a complete and total grasp of what was happening before it happend, allowed his very qualified staff to handle things they knew how to handle, and when he toured the area two days after the storm ended, he got it. The towns have dried out; many houses in the 100 year flood plain had to be abandoned in those areas and as of 2 years ago still hadn’t been dealt with - surprise, under a Neocon Republican government. But, people who had to abandon their homes and property were taken care of. So, we who were there - and kept track of what was going on - know what really happened.

Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens.
