VIDEO: “Chief Porker” Don Young Lashes Out At Critics»

Rep. Don Young (R-AK) is a self-proclaimed “little oinker” and aspires to be the “chief porker.” As chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Commitee, he’s ensured that the six-year $295 billion transportation bill is “stuffed like a turkey” with $721 million in projects for Alaska, including $223 million for the infamous “bridge to nowhere.”

But don’t you dare suggest that money is pork, especially if you’re sitting in his office.

Watch Young: QT Streaming

REPORTER: Isn’t there a bunch of stuff in that highway bill, at least 24 billion dollars, that could be taken out and used for the people in New Orleans and Mississippi and the places that were affected?

REP. YOUNG: No! That money is not there! That money is for transportation! That is not added pork. See, that’s why the whole media — Wall Street Journal, yourself, respectfully, you know, Sam Donaldson — don’t know what the hell you are talking about. This is grandstanding by individuals that don’t know what they’re talking about. I’ll go back to that. It’s ignorance and stupidity.

  1. Innocent Bystander Says:

More fiscal responsibility by the Republicans. They weren’t kidding when they arranged a “Contract on America”.

Even the people of Alaska didn’t want this bridge. What a monumental waste.

  2. progressive and proud Says:

Well, the right can’t run on the “fiscally responsible” ticket any longer. They call the left tax and spend - hell, they are just borrow and spend. Let me see, which door will I choose?

And just my editorial but DANG is this guy painful to look at. Sure looks like a perv to me.

  3. twoplustwoisfour Says:

It’s the people’s money, you useless kleptocrat.

  4. Andrew Says:

It’s people like this that are driving a wedge into the Republican party. The fiscal conservatives tolerated the neocons and social conservatives for a long time but now push has come to shove and they are bailing out.

We cannot sustain this budget deficit. The arguments that the deficit doesn’t matter because of the returns we’re earning on foreign direct investment just don’t jive with reality.

There will come a time when the current account deficit will become too large and the global capital market will force a correction. When the Japanese, Chinese, Koreans and Taiwanese lose their appetite for US treasuries our government is in for a world of hurt.

  5. Jay Says:

Andrew, you’re spot on….but it’s not only our government that’s in for a world of hurt, the governed are royally screwed too. We all suffer (and have suffered) a great deal as a result of the current administration.

It’s time to end the downward spiral.

  6. Pablo in Mexico Says:

Oh yes Senator Oinker, you hit the nail right on the head. It is IGNORANT AND STUPID OF YOU.

you are a grade A1 asshole who should be taken from the senate chambers and horsewhipped. In fact, the whole damn bunch of you need it, and badly.

  8. Sharon Cox Says:

Saw this crack pot on the tube the other night. He is just evil and ugly. Been fighting this same nut bag for several years on killing all the wolves in Alaska and the Oil drilling mess. He is with the right wing pack, the worst…..Blessings

  9. Uosdwis Says:

Exhibit A of his insanity: ranting at imagined monsters. Yeah, the Wall St Journal- the WALL STREET JOURNAL- doesn’t know what it is talking about. The journalism side is highly respected, and the editorial side is VERY, VERY, VERY CONSERVATIVE!! They are NOT the “liberal media,” you C. Everett Koop-looking POS. And Sam Donaldson IS NOT DOING JOURNALISM ANYMORE, certainly hasn’t said word one on the transportation bill. “Ooh, that Walter Winchell, damned commie, and Edward R. Murrow, too!!”

  10. deegahl Says:

The Daily Show is going to love this video! They also could use Chuck Grassley’s video yesterday when he was called on his pork!

    John, get to work!

  11. Mary Poppin Says:

What do expect from a selfish Repugs. The two bridges goes nowhere. The people from alaska did not want these bridges. This man is so greedy. He cann’t find it in his heart to help the Katrinia victims.

  12. Hank Says:

I lived in Alaska for three years. I can tell you right up front that Rep. Young and Sen. Stevens both are huge pork-barrel champions. The people of Alaska also enjoy not only not having to pay a state tax, but they also enjoy a yearly oil dividend. That is a free gift to every single resident, every year. In 2000, every resident received $1963.86. This year it has dropped a little, down to $845.76 for every resident.

With a give-a-way like that, plus the pork-barrel $$$ from the residents in the lower 48, is it any wonder why they are so Republican up there?

  13. spyder Says:

There is a certain irony in the Young earmarks. One of the bridges funded is to span the former glacially covered alluvial to open access to a region for mineral exploration. The glacier has retreated, like nearly all in the northern hemisphere, and the exposed landscape is too wet and boggy to build roads. So Young finds millions to expand the same industries that are linked to the causing of the glacial receding through building a bridge over the receding glacial remains.

  14. mc Says:

You know what, Don, respectfully, go f**k yourself.

  15. Bill from Dover Says:

Shit like this is why every man, woman and child now owe about $28,000 on the national debt.

  16. boing!!! Says:

Seriously, though, we really need one of those bridges at least. Anchorage is out of space to expand and people are forced to commute for hours to get to where the one bridge would go. To get across Knik Arm would save so much time, fuel, headaches, dead moose (road kill), and allow lower housing costs, that it is a no brainer. Especially compared to projects in Washington State-a new Hood Canal Bridge? replace the Lake Washington Bridges? For billions? Boston’s big dig? Come on. Give us our little bridges. Does it make it better if they are toll bridges? they are, you know. I often disagree with the clowns my fellow Alaskans elect but the fact is we got skunked on federal development money for decades, and only get a begrudging token even though we bear the burden of all of your pollution. Exxon Valdez -well, those guys live in Texas, not Alaska. And they haven’t paid up and won’t pay up for their spill. YOu guys aren’t buying the salmon or halibut or shrimp fast enough, and the lumber is cut off, wtf are people supposed to do, make handicrafts?

  17. purvis ames Says:

Look, no matter how you slice it, the money is headed for Alaska because they have two Senators with highly disproportionate influence. If you really want a representative government, the Senate would be abolished.

  18. terryt Says:

Hey, You all need to talk to those folks up north that elected this so called NO PORK SENATOR. He sure pulled the wool over their eyes did’nt he?

  23. Climate Progress » Blog Archive » Don Young wants a Tropical Alaska back — and 260-foot Sea-Level Rise Says:

[…] Of course, for Young, chair of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, that kind of Biblical flooding probably just means more infrastructure projects to fund. It would certainly give new meaning tothe phrase, “Bridge to Nowhere.“ […]

  24. Prufrock Says:

Here’s a comment on boing!!!’s plea for a bridge to nowhere: He’s exagerating the situation. The bridge will reduce a 40 minute commute to 30 minutes. There are more moose on the other side of the bridge to nowhere than exists on the current corridor. It may save a few bucks in gas, but will cost more in the toll. And reduced headaches? What?

Boing!!! says, “we got skunked on federal development money for decades, and only get a begrudging token even though we bear the burden of all of your pollution.” We’ve been on the federal dole since the Pleistocene when both Rep Don Young and Sen Stevens were elected. Both are very good at channeling the swill northward. What pollution does s/he refer to?

This bridge is unnecessary by any commuting, financial, and safety standard. It will promote sprawl, an Anchorage specialty, in an undeveloped flat land.

Don Young’s greed and disregard for American conservative values is matched only by his arrogance.
