Here’s a comment on boing!!!’s plea for a bridge to nowhere: He’s exagerating the situation. The bridge will reduce a 40 minute commute to 30 minutes. There are more moose on the other side of the bridge to nowhere than exists on the current corridor. It may save a few bucks in gas, but will cost more in the toll. And reduced headaches? What?

Boing!!! says, “we got skunked on federal development money for decades, and only get a begrudging token even though we bear the burden of all of your pollution.” We’ve been on the federal dole since the Pleistocene when both Rep Don Young and Sen Stevens were elected. Both are very good at channeling the swill northward. What pollution does s/he refer to?

This bridge is unnecessary by any commuting, financial, and safety standard. It will promote sprawl, an Anchorage specialty, in an undeveloped flat land.

Don Young’s greed and disregard for American conservative values is matched only by his arrogance.

Seriously, though, we really need one of those bridges at least. Anchorage is out of space to expand and people are forced to commute for hours to get to where the one bridge would go. To get across Knik Arm would save so much time, fuel, headaches, dead moose (road kill), and allow lower housing costs, that it is a no brainer. Especially compared to projects in Washington State-a new Hood Canal Bridge? replace the Lake Washington Bridges? For billions? Boston’s big dig? Come on. Give us our little bridges. Does it make it better if they are toll bridges? they are, you know. I often disagree with the clowns my fellow Alaskans elect but the fact is we got skunked on federal development money for decades, and only get a begrudging token even though we bear the burden of all of your pollution. Exxon Valdez -well, those guys live in Texas, not Alaska. And they haven’t paid up and won’t pay up for their spill. YOu guys aren’t buying the salmon or halibut or shrimp fast enough, and the lumber is cut off, wtf are people supposed to do, make handicrafts?

There is a certain irony in the Young earmarks. One of the bridges funded is to span the former glacially covered alluvial to open access to a region for mineral exploration. The glacier has retreated, like nearly all in the northern hemisphere, and the exposed landscape is too wet and boggy to build roads. So Young finds millions to expand the same industries that are linked to the causing of the glacial receding through building a bridge over the receding glacial remains.

I lived in Alaska for three years. I can tell you right up front that Rep. Young and Sen. Stevens both are huge pork-barrel champions. The people of Alaska also enjoy not only not having to pay a state tax, but they also enjoy a yearly oil dividend. That is a free gift to every single resident, every year. In 2000, every resident received $1963.86. This year it has dropped a little, down to $845.76 for every resident.

With a give-a-way like that, plus the pork-barrel $$$ from the residents in the lower 48, is it any wonder why they are so Republican up there?

Andrew, you’re spot on….but it’s not only our government that’s in for a world of hurt, the governed are royally screwed too. We all suffer (and have suffered) a great deal as a result of the current administration.
