New FDA Chief, Same As The Old FDA Chief

New FDA Chief, Same As The Old FDA Chief»

Retiring FDA commissioner Lester Crawford had a reputation for pushing bunk right-wing science on behalf of anti-choice activists. Unfortunately, President Bush plans to replace Crawford with Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach, who also has a reputation for pushing bunk right-wing science on behalf of anti-choice activists.

Von Eschenbach is currently the director of the National Cancer Institute. Within months of his appointment in 2002, the institute abruptly altered a fact sheet on its website “that for years stated the absence of a link between abortion and breast cancer.” Under von Eschenbach, the language was changed to suggest that tests disproving the abortion/breast cancer link were “inconclusive.”

This sent the scientific community into an uproar. Numerous studies, including a massive New England Journal of Medicine study of 1.5 million Danish women, have discounted any connection between abortion and breast cancer. Yet right-wingers continue to push the link as a way to frighten women considering having an abortion.

After enormous pressure, and a statement by 100 institute scientists, von Eschenbach backed down. Yet von Eschenbach’s promotion shows that the days of ideology trumping science at the FDA aren’t over. (Now it’s time for the media to pay attention — not a single mainstream story on the FDA personnel changes has mentioned this controversy.)

This guy will fit in with the right wing religious nuts. I suppose the morning after pill will not be approved for use with out a prescription.
I wonder what he did to get this job?

  4. Sharon Cox Says:

Yep! Here we go again. Where does Bush and co. get these guys from.? There must be a long list of Nazi wanabes that support him, and he draws from that….Only one Dem showed up for the house comittee hearing this morning, to question Drownie. Time to check my pockets for cash and make sure they aren’t taking any today. So far 13 Dem.s have voted for Roberts, I am so disgusted with all these guys think if it get’s any worse I will be looking for another party to join up with……Blessings

  5. Patriot Says:

Diane Rehm just did an hour on this.

  6. Patriot Says:

    He’s lost privatization.
He’s lost Iraq and the “war on terror”
He’s going to get a monster fight on tax cuts.
    His leaders are under investigation.
His gov’t illegally gives up CIA dissenters.
His FEMA and Homeland Security are shams for the world to see.

It’s back to basics for this guy: Abortion and Porn control. How sad.

  7. Zookeeper Says:

Look at this guy’s picture. He makes himself sick.

  8. Mary Poppin Says:

#4 Sharon, Please don’t join another party because we need you to help get these Republican out of office in 2006. Roberts would of got in anyway.
The Republicans control every thing right now. We have to change this in 2006. I am going to help on Bryan Kennedy campaign as we need to get James Sensenbrenner out of office. This is the only way we will have any say in our government. We need to take our American back.

  10. Mary Poppin Says:

These right wing religious nuts have no right to refuse medication to women. There is a double standard, men can get condums but women are refused. WHY!!!

  12. Sharon Cox Says:

Dear Mary, I have been working hard on all our important issues for over 45 years and now most of them are being distroyed. The Roberts issue more than the 3 judges before him we gave away are a tip of the ice berg. More than any other time our representatives should stand together, especialy when you know you are going to loose one should stand up and be counted. I have for almost 5 years been sending out emails to my representatives and seldom if any time have they done what they said they would do when I helped get them elected. Lately I have told them if they would not vote for us I would help vote them out next election. I live in a blue state and have fair representatives, but they to have sold us out and gone with the right wing in serious issues…I’m hopping mad, still working hard but loosing faith that my little voice and one vote will make a change. Where are our leaders.? Sorry for the venting but like I said I am mad. When we clean the house and senate we have lot’s of Dems to push out as well…..Blessings.I do appreciate your coments Mary.

  14. George W. Gotti Says:

Bush Crime Family has the entire government working for THEM and not for US.

    FEMA = SEC = FDA = NASA = NIH = EPA = PENTAGON = etc

    Carlyle = Haliburton = Enron = Harkin = etc

Should we check on the trash business in NYC? Will Chertoff send someone to ‘visit’ us if we speak out?

  15. Andrew Says:

#7 you’re right. he looks like he just took a dump in his pants! They caught him in that second right before he passes out from the smell!

  16. David B Says:

Sharon, your #13 is right on. There are Dems that need targeted to move out as well. I see no fight at all when we should be going for the kill on some of these issues. The muzzeled Dean early so he’s remains quite as well.

  17. kindness Says:

Why does dumbya hate science so?

  18. Ryan Neat Says:

The reichwingers treat science like they do religion - with the desire to control and a complete lack of ability to understand it. Science has standard scientific methods, you can’t just say ‘the study is inconclusive’, when it isn’t. There is either a proven link, or an unproven link. Saying that it’s inconclusive doesn’t even say where the metrics appear to point! Even a study that shows slightly higher levels would be conclusive, so if no higher levels exist the study conclusively proves there’s no currently known link!

In otherwords, they’re intentionally lying through their teeth as republican fascists always do! They believe they’re right, therefore the lie to ‘do the right thing’. The fact that they can’t see the cognitive disconnect in having to lie because the science proves them wrong shows how truly psychotic the reichwing is!

No wonder they could only get 400 people to a nationwide protest - clearly only that many are that stupid, and many of them are cabinet heads in this administration!

  19. Marie Says:

Bushie continues to put in high positions of authority people who place value on politics and religious dogma over science. I believe this is part of the larger plan, carefully worked out, to dumb down America. If Americans are less educated, more submissive to authority, more willing to accept “God’s will,” less informed by the corporate whores in media, we will be more like the sheep that so many are already becoming. We will continue to allow the high-powered science and technology, research and development to be taken over by other countries, while we are “happy” to be working even if it is only in service and low-paying jobs. We will continue to struggle to pay for health care and other basic needs, which will be carefully dispensed by the profit-driven corporations.
I see a slow but sure march toward the elimination of all government services except for military, the control of everything by the corporations, the progressive ascension of the wealthy within those areas, and the descent of the average citizen to the level of being satisfied with a meager existence, by the “grace of God.”
Ignorant and on our knees, that is where they plan to keep us.

  20. Mary Poppin Says:

Marie, What you are saying is so true and very scary.
You think things cann’t get any worse and something else comes up. What do they have plan next?

  21. Jennie Hughes Says:

deja vu with the appointment of “Dr. Andy von…..” Sadly, once again women will lose and pay the costs of physical and financial pain. Doc has the dubious honor (in keeping w/ Pennsylvania Ave.) of not caring about women–what a shocker! His favorites DO include the pharmaceutical industries, anti-abortion, (abortion + breast cancer link scientific farce–see above). The Christian Right’s hocus-pocus “science” rears its head with the money backers in the lead to promote the govt./business advocacy groups pushing these and dozens of other serious subjects. These affect future policies both at the local, state & federal levels–and humans! Ex: The second morning after pill remains on hold for over-the-counter purchase. Religious opponents say “that over-the-counter sales could encourage irresponsible sexual behavior.” Big Govt. has their nose in/up in all we do.

In the meantime, what does MEDICAID in many states still pay for? VIAGRA! Gov. Perdue of GA has urged lawmakers to remove the association between impotence drugs and Medicaid the state-federal program that provides care to 1.5 million poor Georgians–taxpayers there spend more than a quarter-million dollars for erectile dysfunction. A recent survey by The Associated Press showed nearly 800 convicted sex offenders in 14 states including Georgia got their erectile dysfunction drugs filled by Medicaid. Do you see the pattern? We are being duped by this Armageddon group of fanatics–Dr. Von E. is the latest addition.

  22. Sander Bellman Says:

As a retired FDA employee, and former Director of Chemistry for the Southeast Regional Laboratory in Atlanta, I am disheartened and embarrassed at the politicization of my former agency. I always regarded the FDA as one of the most ethical and dedicated science-based public agencies in the world. I was proud to be a part of it.

The FDA I knew was (and generally still is) staffed by dedicated career scientists and investigators who were dedicated to protecting the public health. For years, the agency was lead by career civil service employees dedicated to consumer protection. When I joined the FDA in 1962, I was told, “Based on your dedication and performance, any GS-5 Chemist or Investigator could eventually become the Commissioner of Foods and Drugs.”

Those days passed long ago, but generally the Commissioners selected by the Secretaries of Health and Human Services were still dedicated health professionals and public servants. It appears those days are gone as well. It saddens me.
