DeLay Hysterics: Indictment Among the Most Baseless “in American History”

At a rush press conference this afternoon, former Majority Leader Tom DeLay’s rhetoric reached new heights of absurdity:

Watch DeLay: Quicktime Streaming

Great news today. [Laughter] Just another day at the office. Good afternoon. Thank you all for attending. This morning, in an act of blatant, political partisanship, a rogue District Attorney in Travis County, Texas, named Ronnie Earle, charged me with one count of criminal conspiracy — a reckless charge wholly unsupported by the facts. This is one of the weakest, most baseless indictments in American history.

here’s the rub: that tatic USED to work. well. NOT ANYMORE. people are PISSED OFF. Saw how corruption led to death in NO. Saw one of Bush’s guys not just indicted, but arrested. Saw Rove lie repeatedly.

Delay can spew vitriol all he wants. makes him look both desperate and out-of-control. good riddance

  4. Dan Fero says:

I want to see a billboard with Tom Delay waving a couple of peace signs in the air, loudly proclaiming “I am not a crook.” We didn’t believe Nixon, and with that type of branding, America won’t believe Delay either.

These crazies don’t know they’re crazy.

  6. Zwack says:

Surely a Grand Jury indicted him which must mean that the prosecutor brought enough information to them that they felt the charge needed to be answered. That would make it somewhat less than “baseless”.

  7. So What Now? says:

    But here’s a queston.

The progressives point out that someone is corrupt, if it gets bad enough the republicans take the person off stage. Life goes on. The onslaught of right wing fascism continues.

We had fun with Ashcroft, with Kerik, with Trent Lott. They went down the memory hole. So what? They are still picking the judges, stealing the money, running the wars they want.

We seem to be missing something here.

  8. Michael Derravo says:

No, #5 — YOU know DeLay drives the progressive left crazy! And that, despite his flaws, is why we support him. We’d rather have someone better, but any conservative (even a corrupt one) is better than a liberal (and I say that with all due respect)

  9. Pablo in Mexico says:

As far as I can tell, no one in the media has covered this point as of now.

They in the media are implying that DeLay is standing along in this conspiracy allegation.

Not at all, folks, not at all. DeLay was indicted along with several other individuals and companies. He is not standing alone.

The scam was TRMPAC and there is little doubt in my mind that DeLay did indeed conspire with one or more of the individuals to shift the money back to Texas,

It does not take a criminal act to complete the conspiracy. A simple thing like a telephone call to one of the others brings DeLay right in where he belongs, as a conspirator.

I see Hastert did not bend to his request for Dreier, and that is a smack in the face to DeLay, however, Hastert did give Dreier a piece of the bone.

Dreier and DeLay have been porking each other for quite a few years now. Then DeLay goes to church on Sundays and rants and raves agaainst gays, when he is a practicing one himself.

Are you fvcking kidding me. You would rather have someone corrupt than have a liberal. God damn you people are fvcking nut jobs. I am amzed at the level of corruption from the Bush administration, but I am even more amazed at the level of stupidity of their supporters. You shoul dbe ashamed of yourself.

REP. CHRISTOPHER SHAYS ®, CONNECTICUT: Did you ask OMB for the money? Did you ask Mr. Chertoff for the money? Who did you ask for the money, so that you would have the ability to implement Hurricane Pam, so we could have saved lots of lives?

BROWN: We put that money in our budget request following Hurricane Pam, and it was removed by the Department of Homeland Security.

I thought the most baseless indictment was the one that charged clinton with perjury even though his ‘lie’ was that he correctly used the terminology of ’sex’ laid out by the grand jury. THAT was the most baseless indictment in history.

Actually, Tommy boy, do you have any idea what a grand jury is? You should by now, given your past actions. Normal people (not “witch-hunting Democrats”) hear evidence “upon information and belief” presented to them by the prosecutor.

“Commissioners must, to the extent possible, select grand jurors who represent a broad cross-section of the population of the county, considering the factors of race, sex, and age. All potential jurors must meet certain other qualifications, including the ability to read and write.”

    ***

“On completion of an investigation the grand jury determines by vote whether or not an indictment should be presented to the court; nine votes [out of 12] are necessary for a decision to indict….”

Mr. Derravo, you’ve got to be joking! You would rather have someone corrupt than have a liberal?!? That just proves your unbelievable stupidity. You do realize that these corrupt people are in charge of the money you give them each year in taxes, right? So you’d rather have that money (your money) put in the pocket of some rich asshole instead of using it for the good of the American people? That’s got to be the dumbest thing I’ve ever read on this site.

  24. Ryan Neat says:

    Mikey,

Stupid is as stupid does – and that spells republican…

  25. Blue State Red says:

My admiration for Tom DeLay has skyrocketed upward today with his principled handling of this indictment.

Ronnie Earle has a history of convincing grand juries that his political enemies are “ham sandwiches” – then dropping or losing the resulting indictments. I’m glad DeLay is going to take him on, mano-a-mano. Nico and his “progressive” buddies better be prepared to eat a full plate of crow when DeLay wins this case.

In the meantime, DeLay has done the proper thing by stepping down from his leadership post. That should make it easier, not harder for the GOP to keep its legislative agenda moving forward.

Be careful what you wish for. As usual Democrats have already overplayed their hand.

  26. cynical ex-hippie says:

Don’t blame Michael Derravo for his thinking. If you spent your life listening to hate radio and faux news, and believed liberals hate America, love Castro, eat like Michael Moore, call everyone Hitler, never say Merry Christmas, want to turn your children gay, want you to try being gay so you can understand it too, want to ban the car, ban christianity, ban capitalism, take all your money and spend it on sensitivity training for dolphins, surrender the country to terrorists, force you to eat French food (oh the sauces! the sauces!), kill babies and feast on their stem cells while worshipping Satan (for the sake of cultural sensitivity), you wouldn’t want them in power either.

So please, have some tolerance for their political views. We’re all Americans, after all.

  27. cynical ex-hippie says:

BSR, Republicans have been overplaying their hand for the past five years. You were warned repeatedly then, don’t act like you’re going to be in power forever. How will you work with the new Democrat majority? What concessions will you offer? How will you avoid being labeled obstructionist?

  28. amydemiceli says:

this corruption had a direct affect on the redistricting of texas, that us where the tradgedy in all of this lies.

  29. rosied says:

#25, if this is the type of person you admire, you sure don’t set the bar very high.

This is a man that has had repeated charges brought against him over the last 10 years. While the charges were dismissed, do you really feel his actions are on the up and up if he keeps having charges brought against him? I guess the Grand Jury are all liberals. That’s it, it is just one big Conspiracy.

My expectations are high for anyone in government regardless of party.

  30. Spudge_Boy says:

    BSR,

Once again, your stupiduty is overwhelming.

Did you know that Ronnie Earl has gotten indictments for 15 politicions. 12 of those 15 were democrats.

Ronnie Earl is if anything a republican.

    But, he is not.

You are stupid and it shows.

Go learn something and then come back here.

How about we make a deal:

We will eat crow if DeLay is found not guilty.

And you will never come here and post your garbage if he is found guilty.

    Deal?

  31. Ryan Neat says:

“Ronnie Earle has a history of convincing grand juries that his political enemies are “ham sandwiches” – then dropping or losing the resulting indictments. I’m glad DeLay is going to take him on, mano-a-mano. Nico and his “progressive” buddies better be prepared to eat a full plate of crow when DeLay wins this case.”

So Ronnie has a lot of ‘democratic’ enemies you’re saying?

What a crackpot – your argument is irrational…

“In the meantime, DeLay has done the proper thing by stepping down from his leadership post. That should make it easier, not harder for the GOP to keep its legislative agenda moving forward.”

So you say – but then again fascist one party rule is still in effect. But see, we’re not just playing for the next few months, we’re playing for the next election where you lose and GeezassW is impeached! Keep up the faith brother – you’re gonna need it!

“Be careful what you wish for. As usual Democrats have already overplayed their hand. ”

Bahahaha, what an idiot! This isn’t ‘gambling’, who do you think you are Ralph Reed? This is about criminals and doing the right thing. The fact that you seem unsympathetic to the needs to get corruption out of government shows how unamerican, partisan frankly STUPID that you are! You truly represent republican values – keep showing that good face of yours for the world to see what freaks you all are!

  32. Mikey says:

Spudge, you’re wasting your time. Do you expect BSR to honor such a deal if he makes it? Reds aren’t exactly known for their integrity.

  33. Ryan Neat says:

This is how the crooks in texas respond to honest law enforcement and ‘personal responsibility’. The party of hate and hypocrits rides again!

Texas GOP wants to strip Ronnie Earle of the power to investigate state officials

The Republican Party of Texas has launched a petition drive in hopes of stripping Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle and his Public Integrity Unit of his power to investigate state officials.

The call to strip the DA of his power comes after months of revalations concerning the Texas Association of Business and the political action committee Texans for a Republican Majority, both of which are accused of illegally using corporate contributions to directly assist political candidates, which is illegal in Texas. — Political State Report

Ronnie must really be getting close to the bone.

  34. Ryan Neat says:

    Mikey,

How true – republicans are without honor. They don’t honor anything except the nickel they can steal from you…

  35. Spudge_Boy says:

    Mikey,

    You’re right, but I can always dream can’t I.

    “Keep hope alive!”

  36. Blue State Red says:

“How will you work with the new Democrat majority? What concessions will you offer? How will you avoid being labeled obstructionist?”

I can’t “avoid being labeled” anything by any keyboard crackpot – as the “progressives” on this site have repeatedly proven. But I don’t have to worry about offering any “concessions” to a “new Democrat majority” until the Democrats demonstrate that they still can win a national election, or a majority of both houses of Congress, without stealing people’s credit info. And by that time there will be plenty of conservatives on the Supreme Court. So I’m not losing too much sleep right now.

  37. Spudge_Boy says:

    BSR,

    How about my deal?

  38. George says:

Delay is in disagreement about application of the law. It’s really a done deal. That’s why he’s so mad. It is also very contrary to the Rove doctrine of having your bases covered.

  39. Phinga Bheng says:

Ryan you’re in no position to call anybody irrational, an idiot or stupid based on your previous performance. But we have seen that he resorts to name calling when he runs out of b.s. Next will come the hysterical tirades.

An indictment is an allegation not a conviction. Only an irrational paranoid would rush to judgement…like Ryan and his lefty buddies.

  40. Blue State Red says:

    I love this one:

“This is a man that has had repeated charges brought against him over the last 10 years. While the charges were dismissed, do you really feel his actions are on the up and up if he keeps having charges brought against him? . . . My expectations are high for anyone in government regardless of party.”

Okay, so explain to me all the reasons, based on your “great expectations,” why Hillary should be allowed anywhere near a politcal office, including the one she now occupies. Could it be that, “while the charges were dismissed,” she won something called an election?

This is America, where the voters decide – not the “progressive” politburo.

  41. Mikey says:

#42 The voters decide based on what? The truth, or a twisted, favorable version of it?

  42. Patriot says:

    Phinga Bheng,

It’s a done deal. The indictment is based soley on the fact that the law was tested by Delay. The grand jury could not have filed without this opinion under the circumstances.
Earle has been putting the squeeze on contributers all this time, contributers who have already testified that Delay would only accept money from people who gave soley to republican causes.

    Delay is F*CKED.

  43. Ha! says:

DeLay is gone. For good. Nce spin BSR, but even powder rooms talking points are behind the curve. You ought to listen to NPR. In spite of the fact it’s another WH shill, it’s got the edge of the envelope. All you got is spin.

  44. Spudge_Boy says:

Hey looky, a new troll: Phinga Bheng

And BSR brings up Hillary. Good job! I thouhg this was Bill Clinton’s fault. Come to find out, it is Hillary’s. Silly me.

Hey BSR, how about my deal?

  45. Ha! says:

It sounds like DeLay’s pretty much done. He may or may not be convicted, of course, and if he doesn’t he’ll likely manage to stick around in Congress for a little while, but it sounds like the DeLay era is over. David Brooks was on NPR, and he’s a reliable peddler of a certain strand of Republican information. Things we learned: Bush never really got along with DeLay, conservative Republicans have come to believe that DeLay only wants more and doesn’t have any genuine conservative principles (whatever they are), everyone just loves Blunt. Whatever the truth of any of these things, the fact that Brooks is peddling these storylines says that they’re pushing him out permanently.

My guess is he’ll decide at some point that it’s much more fun (and lucrative) to retire to K street, if he manages to escape the pokey.

  46. Ha! says:

He’s done. Put a fork in him. Even a verdict of not guilty won’t save him. The Hammer’s head just flew off. It happens.

  47. Ha! says:

    BSR,

We can all get your talking points before you can. Don’t that suck? Try getting the actual news for a change. Maybe it will scare you into leaving for Mexico.

  48. Ha! says:

This is America, where the voters decide – not the “progressive” politburo.

No, according to one of your other names, because there are only two or three of you here, all from that sad little site The American Federalist Urinal, it’s the supreme court that is penultimate and forever, or wait, is it the constitution? You are confused. It can’t be the people. That would be the anti-libertarian tryanny of democracy. We can’t have that. It must be the Preznit.

  49. Patriot says:

In the long run, aside from all the glaring ethics violations party wide, republicans peddling the Homeland Security Act as real legislation will kill them.
As it stands now, it has not or does not secure boarders or save lives. It has been used SOLEY as a secondary spy agency.
TP should be ashamed for not focusing on this.

    Brown(in response to Katrina failures):

“I have predicted privately for several years that we were going to reach this point because of the lack of resources and the lack of attention being paid,” Brown said. “It has been a personal struggle over the past two or three years to keep that place together because of this resource problem.”

  50. Ha! says:

Hey, what ever happened to the urinal? Did it get flushed yet? Are you guys still sucking on those giant white mints?

  51. Blue State Red says:

This rant from the Democratic Undergound is just one of the many reeaasons I sleep well at night:

“what the f*ck america? what the f*ck?

“what’s keeping it from utterly collapsing? you can only put duct tape and lipstick on it for so long before it sinks asunder. how can it continue as if nothing were wrong? why aren’t people rioting yet? why do so many STILL support the ape? where are the f*cking democrats? how is it all propped up and held together? what fog is blinding so many millions to the actual state of the union? what mind trick? what curse?how long can it stand before it finally implodes like the twin towers? not much longer i’m afraid. how long before the distracted masses have that ‘what the f*ck’? moment? what invisible string binds it all together still? what hypnotic trance are we in that prevents us from surrounding the white house and ridding it of the cockroaches?dead people are floating down the streets of america, and we all go to church on sunday like robots. what the f*ck america? what the f*ck?”

Do you “progressives” always express yourselves this way, or is this the kind of rant you reserve only for special occasions?

  52. Blue State Red says:

“DeLay is gone. For good. Nce spin BSR, but even powder rooms talking points are behind the curve. You ought to listen to NPR.”

Oh yeah, NPR is ALWAYS the first place I go for reliable news & analysis. In fact, I’ve been expecting CBS to hire Garrison Keillor to be Dan Rather’s permanent replacement any day now! LOL!!

Ronnie Earle has bitten off more than he ever will be able to chew, let alone swallow. When DeLay beats this trumped up indictment you will have to deal with watching him run circles around “Left Coast” Nancy Pelosi for the next 25 years.

(Yawn) It’s time for bed now. Sleep tight, Lefties.

  53. Mr. Evil says:

Comments by Blue State Red and Michael Derravo are just more examples of how republicans are more concerned with winning than actually being concerned with the law. They treat politics like a sporting event. Damn the results. Damn the consequences. Damn the constitution, the bill of rights, the law. Ethics and integrity mean nothing to them.

I don’t give a shit about “conservative” or “liberal” policies or philosophies. When someone asks me what I am I don’t answer republican or democrat, I answer “human”. I teach and tell my son the truth no matter how brutal it may be. It’s still the truth. What is paramount to the truth?

Jack Abramoff, Tom DeLay, Bill Frist, Karl Rove, David Safavian. All seem to think they are above the law with smug indifference. I believe the castle is about to crumble and republicans and democrats alike (those that actually believe that integrity still means something) will be disgusted. I know I am.

  54. afterthought says:

Wow, looks like I missed the fight.
It also looks like too much work to catch up.
So I’ll just ask a question:
Don’t all political Perps. say this?
    And:
Among the most baseless in history must
be one of the greatest exaggerations
    in history. ;^)
Overall I am quite happy to see what a judge
    and jury thinks.

  55. David says:

#8, you support DeLay because he drives the progressive left crazy? How about you support him because you’re against the well being of the entire country, instead?

  56. Innocent Bystander says:

“They treat politics like a sporting event.”

Well said, Mr. Evil. That is precisely the problem today. As a diehard Red Sox fan I hate the Yankees. But if I knew the game was rigged so that the Red Sox won all the time, I’d lose interest. Still, it’s just a game, only entertainment.

Politics ain’t sports. It’s life and death. Ask the people of New Orleans or our soldiers in Iraq. Sadly, these brainwashed Limpbots think it’s all a big game. They don’t care if the ref’s always make the calls in their favor, they never question a win even if they deserve to lose.

Problem is, when they “win”, they’ve really lost along with the rest of us. When they “lose”, they win with the rest of us.

  57. Ryan Neat says:

“Ryan you’re in no position to call anybody irrational, an idiot or stupid based on your previous performance. But we have seen that he resorts to name calling when he runs out of b.s. Next will come the hysterical tirades.”

You aren’t referring to the thread where I proved you wrong are you, where you kept saying ‘I win’ about an irrelevant point are you? You’re a slow learner… Home schooled?

“An indictment is an allegation not a conviction. ”

Who said it was you retard? There you go arguing irrelevant and off topic points where you claim people say things then they did. Have you always been this stupid, or were you born that way?

“Only an irrational paranoid would rush to judgement…like Ryan and his lefty buddies. ”

And yet you seem to have done that yourself – you must be proud of your leftie ways… Well see there’s lots of things wrong with your assessment, so lets begin.

    1) Has Delay contradicted (lied) – yes, we see it on the home page.
    2) Has Delay already been dinged for unethical and borderline illegal actions – yes.
    3) Does a grand jury indictment warrant the likelihood of guilt? Yes.
    4) Will it take a trial to confirm this guilt? Yes.
    5) Am I allowed to have an opinion based on his past performance? Yes.
    6) Do you think OJ is guilty even though the trial said he was innocent? I bet you do – why were you so stupid to rush to judgement?

    Ignorant hipocrit!

  58. Ryan Neat says:

“This is America, where the voters decide – not the “progressive” politburo.
Comment by Blue State Red ”

Politburo – nice commie reference, your fat stupid mother must be proud of how clever you are.

One would hope the voters decide, based on the diebold vote machine rigging and exit polls from the last couple elections – clearly this is no longer the case.

If you’d like to lobby to GUARANTEE the electronic voting and tally machines have written audit trails, then we can see whether your reichwing fascist friends stole the election to prevent what they fear as the ‘politburo’ from actually winning. Clearly you prefer fascism to other forms of governments since you’re defending the one now in office…

  59. busyhands says:

I hope the Ronnie Earle will watch his back.Abramoff,a “good friend” of DeLay’s is being looked at in the murder of a man involved in the casino scandal two years ago,I think it was.ROVE is a powerful and vengeful man.I don’t think he’ll do or say anything publically but he’s certainly capable of causing harm and has no qualms about it.Why should he?He’s never had to suffer the consequences of any of his actions. They are a tight knit little group and dangerous.I’m glad his trial will be in civil court and not a senate investigation or committee. He may find a way to buy his way out but at least he’s been exposed for one of his many transgressions.

  60. Nancy L. says:

If (when) Delay falls, then it’s a step closer to the WH. At least now, we’re finally getting closer, more so than with Brown. Delay being convicted, may send some of the other scum scrambling. Once you start turning over rocks, you never know what you’re going to find. Those Nov 2006 elections are getting closer.

  61. Ryan Neat says:

Brown blamed Chertoff today for ineptly cutting his budgets and gutting his staff. I noticed that didn’t get much play.

No surprise, the press is largely still playing damage control for the administration – only a few reporters are actually doing their job…

  62. I LEFT I says:

The truly beautiful thing these days is, you don’t have to respond to the trolls. At this point, they’re simply posting self-parody. The foolishness is fully visible to anyone not already lost to right-wing extremism (about 70% of the country, give or take).

Pass the popcorn, and thanks for the entertainment, NeD, I-RIGHT-I, et al.

  66. Die sucka! says:

Life is good when suckas die.

  67. Jennty says:

Ah,yes… yesterday was a GOOD day. Delay can spin, puke, spin some more, it won’t matter. In a court of law, only the facts matter. His spin could even get him into more trouble. Especially if he lies in the press then says something in the trial that directly contradicts it. That would be bad for the whole political career… whatever is left of it. Yes on the whole it was a very good day yesterday.

  68. Pablo in Mexico says:

DeLay is not going to get very far from the defense standpoint with these two alcoholic attorneys he has had on his payroll for years now.

They both drink their lunch and have been chastised by judges for their late returns to the courtroom.

    Check it cout.

  69. Sharon Cox says:

No matter Pablo, just being indicted is a good start and very damaging for any career..Delay may have to retire to the Crawford ranch with the coward and cut brush. They will ofcourse use air force on to get there, just like yesterday..Blessings

  70. Phinga Bheng says:

    Lyin Ryan,

“An indictment is an allegation not a conviction.”

That quote came from Ronnie himself in his press conference, not me. Once again you’re uninformed.

And with this post of yours:
“Who said it was you retard? There you go arguing irrelevant and off topic points where you claim people say things then they did. Have you always been this stupid, or were you born that way?”

…you’re making absolutley no sense, but since it includes name calling it means you really have nothing to say.

As far as my education, I’m a P.E. Oh, I’ll probably have to explain that to you, too.

  71. Arliss says:

Hopefully we will see another indictment within the next couple of weeks.

The indictment of Karl Rove is just around the corner!

  72. Ryan Neat says:

“That quote came from Ronnie himself in his press conference, not me. Once again you’re uninformed.”

Once again you’re irrelevant – why are you debating something that’s irrelevant to the discussion? You’re truly a stupid loser…

  73. Ryan Neat says:

To be a P.E, you must first be “P”, which you clearly are devoid of. U.E. is more a more accurate assessment. See when you post something ‘accussing’ someone of saying something, at which point they correct you that you were wrong, and that item wasn’t said, only a U.E. with self esteem issues trying to ‘prove something right’ that’s clearly wrong would then make the argument about ‘well I didn’t say that, your side did’. Not only is it a distortion of context and argument, it’s also a distortion of the thread and what I said.

It’s clearly the work of a second rate hack who should have spent more time learning logic and debate, and less time playing video games…

  74. Ryan Neat says:

“…you’re making absolutley no sense, but since it includes name calling it means you really have nothing to say.”

Well you clearly aren’t very smart, so let me help you.

See the issue is that you have low reading comprehension, so when you come here you argue a point that isn’t even relevant or within context of what people are saying. This what’s often called a ‘distractive tactic of debate’, as it attempts to pick ’something’ that the person feels like they’re winning on. Then the next tactic is to attempt to say well because of X, Y and Z (all clearly unrelated to the discussion) – you were wrong on D.

So let me correct you from the beginning, as clearly you aren’t smart enough to follow ANY threads without the handholding normally required for kindergarten children.

    1) I commented that the argument that the indictment was ‘baseless’ was nonsense. Clearly there was enough evidence and questions as to his guilt to go to trial.

    2) Your response was to berate me by saying that it was an indictment and not a conviction – an irrelevant point as I had never said that it was.

    3) I point this out to you the fact that you made a point that was irrelevant to the thread or what I said.

    4) Your response is to say ‘well Earle said that, I didn’t', even though you clearly posted it (without its origins) as an implication that people were claiming others – a FALSE SMEAR AND A LIE on your part, as that’s not what happened. Then you had the audacity to pretend like ‘you won’ something that was never even being argued.

The result. You clearly are a nutjob. You don’t even know how to debate!

    The facts are the facts.

    1) Delay has been convicted on 3 separate occasions of ethical violations that bordered on criminal and would have probably been prosecuted under a more fair congress.
    2) Delay was indicted because of evidence that clearly shows TRMPAC was involved in an Enron scheme known as ‘Death Star’ used to launder goods (in this case campaign money) through fraudulent interstate means.
    3) Delay may be innocent – but the reality is he’s probably not.
    4) I’m just as entitled to my opinion as you were about OJ – which clearly demonstrates I was right, and you’re a stupid butt plug!

  75. burnspbesq says:

News flash: DeLay will eventually plead guilty to the charge on which he was indicted yesterday.

Why do I believe that, in the face of his over-the-top performance of yesterday?

Because I’ve read the indictment, which recites that he WAIVED THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS in order to allow the grand jury to indict him for criminal conspiracy.

Ask yourself the following question: why on earth would a target of a grand jury investigation, represented by competent counsel, agree to waive the statute of limitations?

Here’s one possible answer: Earle has him dead to rights on something even bigger, and the waiver of the statute makes a deal possible.

Pure speculation on my part, but it’s a logically coherent scenario.
