The Truth About Ronnie Earle»

You’ll hear plenty from DeLay et al. about Ronnie Earle. Here are the facts:

EARLE HAS PROSECUTED FOUR TIMES AS MANY DEMOCRATS AS REPUBLICANS: “Over Earle’s 27-year tenure, his Public Integrity Unit has prosecuted 15 elected officials, including 12 Democrats.” [Los Angeles Times, 5/15/05]

EARLE PROSECUTED DEMOCRATS AT THE HIGHEST LEVELS OF STATE GOVERNMENT: “Some of the Democrats prosecuted by Earle and his Public Integrity Unit are former Texas House Speaker Gib Lewis, former Texas Attorney General Jim Mattox, former State Treasurer Warren Harding and former Texas Supreme Court Justice Don Yarbrough.” [AP, 12/12/04]

EARLE AIDES WENT ON TO RUN FOR OFFICE AS REPUBLICANS: “Some of his top assistants have been with him for decades. A few have gone on to run for elected office as Republicans.” [Los Angeles Times, 5/15/05]

FRIEND OF OFFICIAL TARGETED BY EARLE CALLED HIM A ‘BOY SCOUT’: “Democrats, for their part, are still upset over the prosecution of Attorney General Jim Mattox for bribery in 1985. … He was acquitted and years later, Jim Marston, a civil lawyer in Austin and friend of Mr. Mattox, asked Earle why he went ahead with the questionable case. “I said, ‘Ronnie, how can it be an abuse of power to threaten a lawyer? We threaten each other all the time.’ He told me that elected officials are held to a higher standard. They are supposed to be [above suspicion] like Caesar’s wife.’ It was then that Mr. Marston realized how deep Earle’s principles run. ‘Ronnie Earle is a Boy Scout who is offended by wrongdoings, chief among them, public officials’ abuse of power.’ [Christian Science Monitor, 12/03/04]

EARLE HAS REPUTATION AS PRINCIPLED, ‘OVERLY CAUTIOUS’: “Deliberate in the capital cases he sends to juries, Earle is well known for examining an issue from all angles before acting. ‘If I have any complaint about Ronnie, it’s that he is overly cautious about who he prosecutes,’ says Marston. ‘The fact that it has taken two years to investigate Tom DeLay is a sign not of partisanship, but of being completely careful.’” [Christian Science Monitor, 12/03/04]

EARLE HAS REPUTATION FOR ‘STRONG MORAL STREAK’: “[T]o those who know him, Earle has always exhibited a strong moral streak - from his formative years growing up in a small town outside Fort Worth, to his time on the Austin night court, to his political service in the state legislature. But they contend his morality is tempered by his compassion. ‘Ronnie is very principled and will do the right thing even if it isn’t the smartest political thing to do,’ says Ellen Halbert, a victim’s rights advocate.” [Christian Science Monitor, 12/03/04]

EARLE HAS REPUTATION FOR RESPECTING THE RULES: “‘One of the things I admired most about Ronnie was his indefatigable ability to go and meet with groups all over town all the time–right-wing groups, left-wing groups, the Rotary,’ says Bill Reid, an attorney who retired from Earle’s office in 1997. ‘He’s not a bloodthirsty prosecutor who wanted to get notches on his gun. There are some who have a reputation for walking close to the line in terms of evidence and rights, but there was never a push or inclination from him that we ought to bend the rules. Working for him, I was doing what I wanted to do, and I could go home and sleep at night.’” [Los Angeles Times, 5/15/05]

HOUSTON CHRONICLE: ALLEGATIONS OF PARTISANSHIP NOT SUPPORTED BY FACTS: Chronicle editorial: “The record does not support allegations that Earle is prone to partisan witch hunts.” [3/17/03]

    #1…

    Make things up.

Since when did they ever care about Reality?

    Z.

  2. Patriot Says:

Earle is the standard by which Democrats should hold Democrats accountable.

  3. cynical ex-hippie Says:

Republicans think it’s important not to prejudge these things. We should all wait silently to see if he is convicted and ultimately pardoned. Bush can promise that he won’t have any convicted, unpardoned people working for him.

  4. cynical ex-hippie Says:

Patriot, maybe you didn’t read. Earle is a Democrat holding Democrats accountable.

[…] >> The Truth About Ronnie Earle: “EARLE HAS PROSECUTED FOUR TIMES AS MANY DEMOCRATS AS REPUBLICANS: “Over Earle’s 27-year tenure, his Public Integrity Unit has prosecuted 15 elected officials, including 12 Democrats.”” […]

  6. Patriot Says:

    cynical ex-hippie,

Duh. He’s the only one. Did you quit the grass, cynical?

  7. Marie Says:

Ronnie Earle should be the example for many.

  8. The Witch Says:

Can we get him nominated for the Supreme Court?

Or at least put him on the Plame case?

  9. Concerned Conservative Says:

TP, you might want to rethink the post about Earle prosecuting 4 times as many Dems as Repubs. Sure, it might mean that he is not biased against Repubs. but it also might mean that Dems are 4 times as corrupt as Repubs.

    Oops.

  10. The Witch Says:

Concerned Conservative — I had the same thought, sadly enough…

  11. Patriot Says:

It means Democrats dominate Texas politics, CC. They have since Texas was a state. Go away, will ya CC?

  12. Ryan Neat Says:

    TheWitch,

In the south many ‘democrats’ have more in common with republicans than they do with the rest of the country - including the propensity for corruption. Think Zell Miller and it will all come clear!

The reason many democrats in the south are so is because they’re still mad at republicans for the civil war - it’s not a question of ideology for them. Their ideology is as foreign to a northern progressive as JeezassW is.

  13. Concerned Conservative Says:

Witch, corruption in politics knows no party boundary

  14. Concerned Conservative Says:

Ryan, how does this post square with your claim (on the previous thread) that Repubs are more corrupt than Dems?

  15. Wallace Says:

“EARLE HAS PROSECUTED FOUR TIMES AS MANY DEMOCRATS AS REPUBLICANS”

Only because Democrats are five times as crooked.

  16. Patriot Says:

    Witch
    Ryan Neat
    CC

You are all wrong. It’s about percentages.

  17. Concerned Conservative Says:

Patriot, you just refuted the point of the post.

  18. Jonathan Says:

Witch, corruption in politics knows no party boundary

Very true. I do have to say, though, that on a national stage, there’s more corruption in the ranks of government leaders now than I can remember at any other point in my lifetime. Since a good chunk of that covered Democratic majorities, that’s saying something.

  19. Jonathan Says:

    CC –
The point of the post is to defend Earle from the “partisan Democrat” charge that’s meant to deflect attention from DeLay, not to claim that he hates Democrats more than Republicans.

Unfortunately, DeLay was indicted by a Grand Jury, not Earle so the point is rather moot regardless. Still, such deflections have worked in the realm of PR in the past, so it’s nice to see the charge against Earle is unfounded.

  20. Patriot Says:

The “point” to the post was to showcase character witnesses. Go away, CC.

  21. spyder Says:

Well we will just have to see how long Rove let’s W fraternize with Tommy. That other frito LAY was written off shortly after his problems became political liabilities; this one won’t get the cold shoulder until he no longer is useful to Karl and his talking point minions. Then there won’t be any more pictures of W and Tommy walking hand in hand(figurative in this case isn’t it??).

  22. Jay Says:

I’d be willing to bet a mortgage payment that the reason Earle has convicted more Dems than Repubs is that in Texas, Democrats are the hunted. Significant, monied, forces in Texas (think Swift Boat liars) see to it that the GOP gravytrain keeps rolling along.

Democrats in Texas = wounded wildebeest on the Serengeti.

  23. Concerned Conservative Says:

Jonanthan, my point to Patriot is that Earle could still be painted as a partisan dem if the numbers of dems to repubs were greater than 4-1.

  24. Andrew Says:

The point is that DeLay’s comments about this being a political retribution are flat out wrong because this guy doesn’t factor that into who gets investigated.

I think it’s fine to point out that 12 of the 15 people he’s indicted were Democrats. Nobody ever said Dems were perfect, especially in the South. I think it’s great that TP is making this FACT public knowledge.

In case you haven’t noticed, they generally source things very well and really on facts instead of just continuing to espouse the same tired talking points from Karl Rove. You’ll often find the threads here that are especially fact-laden to be free of trolls because they just don’t have a talking point yet from KR to regurgitate.

  25. wisedup Says:

Thank you Mr. Earle, which ever party, lets get them out of office. GOODBYE TOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.

  26. afterthought Says:

    What I like:
    1) Ronnie is known to be honest
    2) Ronnie is known to be cautious about prosecution
    3) The GOP has already been using the partisan spin-lie
    4) Ronnie has spent a long time investigating
    5) DeLay got indicted

I don’t think we would get to 5, knowing 1-4, without
    there being a case.

The court will decide and I will presume innocence (only fair),
but I don’t think the spin-crap will stick this time.

    GOP, Your corruption is showing.

  27. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

You people have NO IDEA what you are up against. We’ll get Pelosi and McDermott if you try to falsely smear DeLay. This prosecutor is a partisan - just ask Kay Bailey.

I am glad this is happening. This is war and liberals have fired the first shot. Ask John Kerry what happens when you start a fight you can’t finish.

  28. afterthought Says:

NeD is nervous, NeD is nervous.

  29. afterthought Says:

You have an awful lot of corrupt republicans
to cover for NeD, you better get busy somewhere
    other than here.

  30. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

Afterthought - when the GOP gets nervous, they usually hit back - HARD. You may get Delay, but we’ll have the last laugh.

  31. AvengingAngel Says:

The Tom Delay Scandal Center has a complete collection of the essential Delay articles, documents, timelines and other resources, including:
    The Indictment Text (PDF)
Original 2003 complaint by Texans for Public Justice to DA Ronnie Earle
Links to resources from Public Citizen, Common Cause, ThinkProgress and other groups.

    For the details, see:

    “The Tom Delay Scandal Center.”

  32. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

#30 - yes, and if necessary, the majority GOP will take care of it. Jim McDermott will be a household name when this is all over.

  33. afterthought Says:

    Hee, Hee, right NeD.

  34. afterthought Says:

Are you trying to convinvce yourself NeD?
You are keeping track of ALL the GOP scandals
    aren’t you?
GOP, your corruption is showing - EVERYWHERE.

  35. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

Afterthought - you stay pre-occupied with the unimportant. I am too busy making sure Bush appoints another conservative to the Supreme Court.

Scandals last 6 months to a year tops. Just ask Hill and Bill. The Supreme Court is forever.

  36. afterthought Says:

    Hey NeD,

That’s sounds good for the 2006 elections to me.
Nice try, but Delay and Frist are a BIG deal and
    you know it.

  37. Vendla Says:

    afterthought,

    Don’t forget Rove.

  38. Richard Jailhouse Nixon Says:

Don’t worry, NED, this will all blow over in a few months. Trust me, I’ve been there.

  39. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

What about 2006 - won’t the GOP just get Diebold to steal it again. I am sure we’ll find a way to come out on top.

Scandals last 6 months to a year tops…..The Supreme Court is forever.

  40. afterthought Says:

    #38,

Oh no, I have not forgotten:
    Rove
    Abramoff
    Ney
    Cunningham
    Ashcroft
    Taft

  41. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

#41 - what did Ashcroft ever do that was offensive. Pray (you anti-Christian bigot!!)

  42. afterthought Says:

    Changing the subject won’t help
    your scandal problem NeD.

  43. tdub Says:

NeD seems to think there is a civil war going on… Fess up, bud…your boy may have been caught and as much as your ilk think you can hit back by doing what you do best, smearing people in return, let’s see what a jury thinks in the Delay matter, or is that “rigged”, too? I can see it now, the “great liberal grand jury” conspiracy….

  44. Mikey Says:

From #28 “…if you try to falsely smear DeLay…”

Is falsely smear different than just a plain old smear? Really, there’s no need to smear DeLay, the facts speak for themselves. He’s a criminal.

  45. afterthought Says:

He covered up the breast on the Justice statue you twit! ;^)
BTW, He may be involved in the Abramoff mess by way
    of the Marianas investigation.

  46. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

ALL OF YOU - focus your partisan energy on this - please. It changes none of the dynamics in Washington today… The Supreme Court is forever.

  47. Vendla Says:

#41….great list. I don’t think Ashcroft actually did anything illegal. But the man is a putz. He was so hated in MO that he actually lost the election to a dead man.

  48. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

Now, I know how Clinton’s apologists felt…. At least we have majority power….

  49. deegahl Says:

Think Progress anticipates all GOP smear campaignes! What a great job, guys. Hannity is already blathering away about how, “we need to look at the motivation of Ronnie Earle.” One again, Think Progress shows why they are the leaders of the netroots. I give you folks all the credit, however, it has to be very easy to combat the GOP’s “attack the messenger”, “smear the whistle-blower” tactic. They need new material!

  50. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

#48 - and we knocked off Carnahan in 2002 almost solely on the fact that she voted against Ashcroft. Get a clue, moron.

  51. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

#50 - shut up. We are not smearing anyone. I am not wasting my breath with some two bit indictment. I have conservative Supreme Court nominees to worry about.

  52. Electric-Escape.net Says:

    Let the smearing begin (again)

Now that Tom DeLay has been indicted on one (just one?) charge of criminal conspiracy, you can bet the right-wing spin machine will be revving up in full gear to paint District Attorney Ronnie Earle as a “partisan” Democrat who’s simply on a witch-h…

  53. Vendla Says:

#51 - Wow, personally attacked by NeD. I’m honored. Still doesn’t make Ashcroft any less of a putz. And it still doesn’t take away the scandals of Delay, Frist, Rove, Abramoff, Ney, Cunningha, Taft….

  54. Ryan Neat Says:

“ALL OF YOU - focus your partisan energy on this - please. It changes none of the dynamics in Washington today… The Supreme Court is forever.”

Bahahahaha. Less corruption than this brought republicans into office in 1994. And Clinton’s approval rating was HIGHER at that point than bush’s is now, and he was steal dealing with pulling the country out of that miserable recession that BushI left..

You keep on deluding yourself! Americans hate crooked politicians, and your party appears to be numero uno at the moment when it comes to crooks!

    REPUBLICANS ARE GOING DOWN!

    LOSERS!!!

  55. The Witch Says:

OK — I had to go into a meeting — I was just giving my initial impressions. I have no doubt that longer and deeper thought on the matter would show I am wrong. But hey, a lot of people go with first impressions, so I thought it’d be valuable as image feedback if nothing else.

  56. The Witch Says:

Ned, I would dearly love to correspond with you via e-mail and potentially post our conversations on my blog. Interested?

  57. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

Ryan…. yawn. Clinton’s approval was about the same A. Vince Foster’s dead body was found in a corn field - for the sheer look of appearance, his political problems were much worse. AND the country is polarized. We’ll throw mud back and break even in the end…. Poor liberals - they have nothing.

  58. afterthought Says:

Wow, NeD seems to be losing it today.
Nobody seems to be taking the bait.
Understandable with the all the GOP scandal.

  59. afterthought Says:

You know what’s the best part?
The “machine” is going down and NeD knows it.
Abramoff and DeLay have broken the “machine”
and that’s gonna hurt ALL the GOP.

  60. afterthought Says:

    BTW NeD,

    If:
“I am not wasting my breath with some two bit indictment.”
    Comment by The Northeast Dilemma

Why are you wasting your time on a “two bit indictment” here?

  61. deegahl Says:

Northeast: Yeah, I heard Hannity today too, are you going to rip off all of your Talking Points or do you have any original thought you might want to add? As for the Libs firing the first shot, have you been drunk all month long? My God man, there have been no less then 5-8 incidents involving GOP cronyism, coruption, and recently, MURDER, in the past 5 days alone! And I have all but forgot about Rove/Plame Gate! That is just a desert at this point. I really wish that Think Progress would list them all. I’ll give it a shot, maybe other Libs can add on to the list! Anyway, I would understand if you took the rest of the year off, how could your party stink it up so bad when the media and the Dems have been MIA for 2 years? What blowhards! Did you people think that nobody would miss all of that money?

DIRTY MEMBERS OF GOD’S OWN PARTY (LOL)

Duke Cunningham, Bob Ney, Tom Delay, Ralph Reed, Karl Rove, Tom Noe, Bob Taft, Arnold Schwatzenegger(sic), Jack Abramoff, 20 other Delay “associates”, Delay’s wife and daughter, The RNC(paid legal bills of convicted phone hackers during ‘04 elections), The dude who made Bush’s ear piece in the debates, All
Swift Boaters (lied about Naval Records), Pat Robertson, FEMA(listed Robertson’s charity on its website), Joe Albaugh, Michael Brown, Fox News(illegal propaganda outlet) Margret Spellings(just for being dumb), The dude who tried to mess with PBS(total retard), oh, BIL FRIST(what an idiot, how can he not think he would get caught. 32 million?? ahahaha)

GEORGE W. BUSH AND RICHARD CHENEY, CAN’T FORGET THOSE TWO! I am sure that Ryan could come up with 10 more!

  62. MLDB Says:

    NED:
“some two bit indictment”…last I checked felonies were pretty important. As a good republican shouldn’t you be shouting something about ‘rule of law’ about now?

  63. deegahl Says:

Ryan: Clinton’s approval ratings were 66% on the day he was lynched, er, impeached by the people who hated losing to him, er, by the GOP. Wow, it didn’t take the GOP to make the Contract useless!

  64. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

#63 - only important against Republicans, my friend.

  65. Dr. Real Says:

    The Supreme Court is forever.

Make up your mind. Is it the court that has too much power, or is it the legislature. You guys are dying on the vine, and even SC Justices can be impeached.

  66. Ryan Neat Says:

“Ryan…. yawn. Clinton’s approval was about the same A. Vince Foster’s dead body was found in a corn field - for the sheer look of appearance, his political problems were much worse. AND the country is polarized. We’ll throw mud back and break even in the end…. Poor liberals - they have nothing.”

According to the ABC News polls, Clinton’s lowest rating was 43%, Bush’s currently is 40%. And within 5 months of this event the republicans swept into power.

Really, much worse you say? You mean the death of one democratic official is much worse than:

    1) Lying to congress to wage an illegal war - an impeachable offense
    2) Outing a CIA Agent - a felony and act of treason
    3) Failing to protect america, and allowing a terrorist attack on american soil based on incompetence and ineptitude
    4) A gutted homeland security and FEMA that allowed THOUSANDS of americans to die that could have been saved
    5) A Senate Majority leader who’s being investigated for insider trading.
    6) A House Majority leader who’s been indicted on corruption and conspiracy

Unfortunately I could do this all day. And you say ‘clinton’s problems were bigger?’.

Clearly you’re on crack or meth or off your prozac. Your comment is DELUSIONAL!

The republicans are crooks and you’re GOING DOWN!

  67. Ryan Neat Says:

    Deegahl,

There were already 34 MAJOR scandals of george bush by january of this year.

    This administration is obscenely criminal!

  68. Dr. Real Says:

It’s rough being on defense when you got all the power, isn’t it NED? So much for power in a democracy. The people are the power and the people are much more “forever” than the supreme court. You are about to find that out in a very unpleasant way. Soon you will be too “refringed” to even bother showing up here. There is always Stormfront, where you belong.

He’s more interested in doing the right thing and being an authentic american than he is party loyalty. He makes me proud! I hope he rats out every crook (of any party) in the state! I’d love to have one of him in the Justice department as well!

  78. Innocent Bystander Says:

NeD, you poor naive cheerleader for losing causes. You think there’s going to be a backlash? Didi you see how many people attended that Pro-Bush, Pro-War rally last Sunday? You don’t understand. DeLay IS the power in COngress. The rest of the Republicans are simply cowardly rubberstampers who made a political pact with the devil. Vote DeLay’s way and you’ll be rewarded, vote your conscious and we’ll bury you. The Republicans don’t have any fighters that can withstand the assault their going to be under because they have no principles….I suspect many will simply leave after their term.

And the best part, it’s just getting started. Wait till the American public starts connecting the dots between Al Qaeda money * Abramoff * Grover Norquist * Karl Rove * DeLay. The Republican Congressional Syndicate….they’ve all partaken of the fruits of Al Qaeda. They’ve put Party before Country. It’s Treason, NeD.

  79. Harx5string Says:

The reason he prosecuted more Democrats than Republicans is that everyone here was a Democrat 15 years ago… My how things change.

  85. Neil Says:

Seems to me the guy is honest and not afraid to prosecute those in power who get bit by the corruption but. Corruption is not a partisan issue. It crosses all party lines. The people with the power to be corrupt are the people in power at the time. I live in Illinois, believe me corrupt politicians are on both sides of the asile. We have sent 2 former Democratic Govenors to prison, 1 Repulican Attornery General and are fixing to send another Republican down that path. It’s not about party its about power. Maybe we should start electing people that care about America and stop electing good ole party bosses.

  86. Ryan Neat Says:

“Al Qaeda money * Abramoff * Grover Norquist * Karl Rove * DeLay. The Republican Congressional Syndicate….they’ve all partaken of the fruits of Al Qaeda. They’ve put Party before Country. It’s Treason, NeD.”

The illegal drug trade that AlQueda used to fund its operations is the same methodology the CIA has used in central america for decades. There are some seriously good folks that work at the CIA, then there’s the group that Buckey used to call “Capitalism’s Invisible Army”. That group is immoral, unprincipled and entirely reichwing! They overthrew several central and south american governments (and tried to overthrow the rest) and install fascist governments. They succeeded in Chile and Argentina - only to have those countries fall apart (just like this one is doing) under the inept policies of fascism.

The only reason fascism worked for Hitler and his european allies is that the stole the financial assets of MILLIONS of people and redistributed them throughout the continent. This massive redistribution of wealth temporarily improved the economic lot of those countries - but it was all an illusion. This ‘economic miracle’ is what the NeoCons have been striving to reproduce - but their own lunacy makes it impossible for them to see that the only way to achieve this is to kill MILLIONS of people and take their money. They thought they could do this in effect with Iraq and the other middle eastern Oil assets - but it didn’t work out as they’d planned…

  87. Oven Mitt Says:

“Al Qaeda money * Abramoff * Grover Norquist * Karl Rove * DeLay. The Republican Congressional Syndicate….they’ve all partaken of the fruits of Al Qaeda. They’ve put Party before Country. It’s Treason, NeD.”

Ya think? I think it’s far more likely that DeLay should avoid small aircraft hops. He’s the one who knows too much.

    Terry,

And the reichwingers claim there’s a liberal media - and yet the MSM continues to simply spread the same lie verbatim - even though it’s completely debunked. I’m not sure what’s liberal about that, other than repubicans have always been loose with the truth…

hey guys…this is earle. did you guys catch my new TV show…huh huh…it’s funny. all about karma. this latest hooplah is only to boost my ratings. not much to the case. MY NAME IS EARLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  96. mindo Says:

John Culberson, HR-R from Texas has just sent an email to his constituents saying that Earle’s a ‘hatchet man’. Annoyed, I called his office and told one of his spokespeople that I thought that the email was a bad idea, and that Earle also went after Democrats. His response was that Ronnie Earle only attacked Democrats that were his political rivals.

I pointed out that I was a constituent of Culberson’s (I am), and that I thought Culberson’s allying himself so closely was a bad career-move. I said Delay smelled bad.

Below is the text of Culbersons’s message.
“Today’s indictment of House Majority Leader Tom DeLay is proof that Ronnie
    > Earle is nothing more than a hatchet man for the Democratic Party who uses
    > his position as Travis County District Attorney to attack his political
    > opponents. We should all remember that his 1994 indictment against former
    > Texas Treasurer and current United States Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison was
    > so baseless that he had to withdraw the case on the first day of the trial.
    > Ronnie Earle also zeroed in on former Texas Attorney General Jim Mattox in
    > the 1980s, and those indictments were eventually dismissed. An indictment
    > from a grand jury is an accusation, and an indictment from Ronnie Earle
    > against a powerful and successful Republican leader like Tom DeLay is simply
    > a publicity stunt and political payback on behalf of the entire Democratic
    > Party.
    >
    > “Ronnie Earle railroaded a grand jury into indicting Tom DeLay so that our
    > Majority Leader would be forced to resign his post. He and his Democratic
    > supporters are targeting Tom DeLay for the same reason that Confederate
    > General Stonewall Jackson always ordered his troops to shoot the brave ones
    > first because it will scare the others. Tom DeLay was indicted because he
    > is the most effective leader in the United States Congress. The Democrats
    > could not beat him in the House of Representatives or at the ballot box, so
    > they changed the venue and manipulated the rules of the game in a last ditch
    > effort to derail him and our Republican agenda.
    >
    > “Tom DeLay is an honest and decent man who always does the right thing for
    > the right reasons. I stand behind Tom DeLay 100 percent, and I am confident
    > that he will be proven innocent and regain his position as Majority Leader.”

    Then Cheney/Rice/Feith and so on.

The Democrats are certainly not perfect, throughout history they have done almost as bad, BUT, RIGHT NOW what we have is a vile Republican party that has been taken over by a bunch of Theopublican Dominionist lunatics that are BY FAR the most abhorrent, disgusting, lying, cheating, bunch of crooks to have EVER set foot in the Whitehouse.

NeD et al…why does this have to be a war with each other???? Do you truly believe the power elite in Washing ton (Dems and Reps) truly represent the average American? Shouldn’t all of us be interested in keeping a close eye on the behavior of the “elected” and clean house when needed?

  114. jparker Says:

NeD’s not a Patriot by any definition, and certainly not an American from a ‘traditional value’ perspective. He claims to be conservative, but in fact knows nothing of the Constitution. He sits twitching in his own little vacuum, soaking up his perceived power he gets through some vague ideological connection he has with his Party. The principals don’t matter, just the Power. The only satisfaction he gets is to feebly try to project that power anonymously onto folks who care about this country and would like to see things change for ALL of our benefit; Dem, Republican, Independent, Greens, etc.

You won’t ever see a guy like NeD debating an issue publicly, unless he’s screaming alongside other NeoCons at Gold Star Moms (’cause it feels sooo good) outside the Crawford ranch. That’s the extent of his bravery. He would never actually fight for his Country, even though he’s 29 and should be enrolled in the NY National Guard, fighting for what he believes (NeD- there’s room for you, as the Guard missed its quota this summer).

NeD is being spoon-fed poop and he LOVES the taste. That’s why he follows the Talking Points so closely. BTW NeD - you might want to consider a vacation in North Korea, you’d like it there…they tell you what to think and say there too.

The only way he can feel powerful is to wax sophomoric on a blog about he gets to WIN vicariously through his Party, no matter what the cost; no matter that a guy like DeLay would throw NeD under a bus if it gave him one more ounce of power- just like he threw Abramoff under a bus. The fact that he pulled down previous post from his Blog demonstrates what kind of character he has; how he can’t stand by his own words. What a sad guy.

NeD- when you sign your Guard paperwork, be sure you post it on that expansive, well-trafficked & detail-oriented blog of yours. We all can’t wait for reports from the “Baghdad NeD” Road Show. Thanks for all your input, True Believer.

If nothing else, if Mr. Earle needs it, perhaps some good sticky fly paper that will help keep that vile creature from getting away..!

Better yet, send this draft-dodging little prick to Iraq.. maybe it could redeem itself as a “human being” but that won’t happen either, like others, especially “Emperior Dumbya”, he’ll talk of a “noble cause” but the little bastard wouldn’t go..even though “It” doesn’t mind sending others it’s age (58) and folks much younger to go over there, and perhaps die..! Remember all you rightwingers…when Delay came back

  123. mark j seagraves Says:

With regards to the DeLay matter; It appears both sides of partisan politics claim to be lilly white. What I know about lawyers, though certainly limited, does lead me to believe that as such they are not as ‘political’ as legislators.

Regardless of the political fallout from being accused, we should not fall prey to the error of failing to accuse at all. Court cases are a public forum to openly investigate diferences, in an orderly and pragmatic manner. Leaving questions of wrong
doing to polititians themselves is asking for little more than hot air. In this light I support the DA’s efforts to move issues of ethical conduct into the most suitable forum available.

The greater the resistance to public discussion and the more verbose and hyperbolic the responses, the more likely the accusations are tenable.

I saw an interview today in which Delay answered the question about Earle going after more dems the republicans. He said that the dems he went after occured in the 70s and 80s when there were no dems in Austin, only conservative dems, now repubs, and liberal dems. He said Earle went after the conservative dems at that time. I have not heard this elsewhere in the media. Not sure if the media is trying to keep this important detail under wraps, or if this is even true. If true the media does have an obligation to put that claim about in Earle in perspective.

It was June of ‘93 and Clinton was just starting out. It went up and stayed up. Bush is a half a decade into his presidency and his numbers are even lower. The GOP is royally screwed because they have proven to be a band of thieves and liars. They’ve got nobody to blame but themselves. Oh yeah, I was a registered Republican for 12 years. I’ve never been a Democrat. I will never again be a Republican. They’ve been taken over by corperations. Sad but true!

  137. Magistrate Says:

When criminal conviction is being used to handle political “incorrectness”, the judicial system is turned on its end. This so called DA is the worst type of offender. A person who needs 3 grand juries to get an indictment is beyond stupid. This man is trying to save his case, when he indeed has no case.

I only pray that people like him are taken from their post, after all this is concluded.
This buffoon is making a mockery of the judicial system, and there are people that are STUPID ENOUGH to support this moron.

  138. Magistrate Says:

In addition, why is it we continue to overlook the fact that this SOON TO BE FIRED DA, had the first grand jury REFUSE to indict Delay? How is it that a case he spent years trying to build, all of the sudden over the weekend came up with New Evidence?
What kind of person attended partisan fundraisers in order to speak openly about an ongoing grand jury investigation against an uncharged public official. As a moneymaking vehicle?
I will tell you… an idiot who doesn’t know law from a hole in the wall.

How is it possible that in conversation the foreman of the Grand Jury said we are indicted Delay because we know he is guilty???? WHAT THE HELL COUNTRY ARE WE IN?
    GUILTY TILL PROVEN INNOCENT?

Ok then…. I guess the Iron Curtain has just been raised over the Alamo.

  139. Ronbet Says:

    If it won’t compute, order a do-over
    By Wesley Pruden
    THE WASHINGTON TIMES
    Published October 7, 2005

    ——————————————————————————–
Everyone wants an occasional “do-over.” Who wouldn’t want to correct certain life choices — choosing to run a stop sign when an unseen cop was right behind you, or choosing to order one for the road at 3 in the morning. Ex-wives represent heartfelt attempts at a do-over. But when you’re a district attorney ardently pursuing the indictment of a ham sandwich, a do-over is risky.
You could ask Ronnie Earle, the infamous district attorney of Travis County, Texas.
Mr. Earle, who has a history of indicting politicians he doesn’t like and occasionally even taking them to trial (which he sometimes wins), went shopping this week for a grand jury to indict Tom DeLay for laundering campaign money. He had to go through three of them before he could get the indictment he wanted, a “true bill” to correct a defective earlier indictment of Mr. DeLay for unspecified crimes of conspiracy and dark dealing. Now the case against the Republican majority leader in the House, on leave that may or may not be temporary, is crumbling even faster than everyone expected.
Mr. Earle, who has experience in explaining curious indictments, says he did the do-over because he uncovered new evidence after the first indictment was handed up by the grand jury. Tom DeLay has his fighting clothes on and his lawyer is all but giddy. “What could have happened over the weekend?” he asks. “They investigate for three years and suddenly they have new evidence? That’s beyond the pale.”
Mr. Earle, like most Texas Democrats, wants to make Tom DeLay pay for his successful takeover of the Texas Legislature by orchestrating a mid-decade redistricting that tipped the balance in the Legislature, and in the Texas delegation to the U.S. House of Representatives, to the Republicans. Like Carthage of old, Tom DeLay must be destroyed.
The first indictments were returned last week, and then the district attorney discovered that well, maybe the law under which the indictment was returned didn’t apply after all. Hmmmmm. Maybe somebody ought to do it over. But the term of Mr. Earle’s original grand jury, compliant as all grand juries are expected to be, had expired. So Ronnie Earle went shopping.
But grand jury No. 2 was not so accommodating. Unlike the first grand jury, presided over by a Democrat, No. 2 was presided over by Judge Julie Kocurek, a Republican. The district attorney told the grand jurors that he had “some evidence” which he wanted to show them “out of an abundance of caution.” The grand jurors balked. This sometimes happens, and when it does district attorneys sometimes throw fits.
The Associated Press, quoting two sources, reported yesterday that when grand jury No. 2 declined to take Mr. Earle’s word for the quality of the ham he was asking them to indict, he became “visibly angry” and the “mood turned unpleasant.” This is polite lawyer talk for “the district attorney started kicking and screaming” and “everybody was about to start breaking up the saloon.”
Mr. Earle went shopping again. This time he found a grand jury presided over by another Democrat, Judge Brenda Kennedy, which was meeting for its first day of the new term. Four hours later, the Austin American-Statesman reported, the new felony indictments were returned.
You can’t find anyone in Austin, the seat of Travis County, who thinks Ronnie Earle will get a conviction. Few believe that the indictments, such as they are, will even get to trial. That’s not the point of this kind of partisan barn-burning. The indictments themselves get a lot of ink and airtime, and Mr. Earle understands that the public often conflates indictment with conviction, as exacerbated by history. So many officers of the House, beginning with Jim Wright and Dan Rostenkowski and continuing with Newt Gingrich and Bob Livingston, have been booted out of office reeking of various body odors that an indictment alone might be enough to destroy the Hammer. It’s a stunning abuse of the law and manipulation of a grand jury, even circa 2005, but it testifies eloquently to the times we live in.
Mr. Earle’s timing is impeccable and not at all coincidental. Certain lobbyists with whom Mr. DeLay has kept company, Jack Abramoff first among them, are giving off ripe body odors themselves. Maybe the public will add 2 and 2 and come up with 5. (Or even 4.) It’s the Washington game, and Democrats and Republicans, liberals and conservatives, all seem to play it equally well. History, after all, is the ultimate do-over.

Wesley Pruden is editor in chief of The Times.

  143. Ohio 2nd » Jean Schmidt Attacks Ronnie Earl Says:

[…] The Congresswoman said she was not going to return the money that Texas Congressman Tom DeLay gave her campaign. “Even if I return it, someone is still going to remind everyone that I took it in the first place. So, for some people it wouldn’t make a difference.” She also said that DeLay hasn’t yet been found guilty of anything. “He has only been charged with a crime by a Texas Prosecutor who is thinking about his own election in Texas.” She said Prosecutor Ronnie Earl went after Delay because he is so powerful and has built a huge following of other conservative House members in Washington. Schmidt’s office is across the hall and four doors down from DeLay’s. Schmidt said she did not receive any of the money DeLay is accused of conspiring to “launder” from Texas businesses, through the Republican National Committee, and back to other Texas Republican hopefuls running for a seat in the Texas State House. Critics say it was these State office holders, that once elected, pushed through a scheme to divide Texas voting districts in a way that favored the election of Republicans to the U.S. House. “So, by hoping to bring down Tom DeLay, Ronnie Earl hopes to break up and destroy Delay’s power and national influence. Delay has been very good at pushing the conservative agenda in Washington,” Schmidt said. She also said the public would be hearing more about Earl’s own behavior, in the near future. […]

    Dear Mr. Earle:

Please don’t relent. It is high time that, this new Breed of unlawful politicians live under the same laws that the rest of the country is expected to live by. They rule by creating fear and through mudslinging. They have answered to no one until now. Good Luck.

  151. Dan Berkes » A few words about Ronnie Earle Says:

[…] September 29th, 2005 Hoo boy, is Tom DeLay pissed. If there’s one thing crooked politicians don’t like, it’s having to be accountable for those things that they thought they were doing out of the public spotlight. DeLay’s target is Ronnie Earle, the prosecuter who convinced a Texas grand jury to indict the congressional leader. The GOP attack machine has shifted into overdrive, accusing Earle of a partisan legal assault on DeLay — and that’s just the kindest accusation that they’ve levelled. […]

  152. Former prosecutor Says:

I’m surprised at what passes for “justice” in Travis County. Three different indictments of DeLay and now Earle seems not to have the evidence he claimed (the list of recipients). Deja vu?? In 1993, Earle indicted Kay Bailey Hutchinson (R) three times and when the case went to trial, offered no evidence.

  153. Magistrate Says:

Don’t worry. Delay won’t even come close to trial. This babblig DA has no evidence. All he is doing is trying to smear Delay, and other people simply for the positions that they have EARNED.

Isn’t it interesting now that Earle hasn’t one shred of evidence, that the LIBERAL LAME ASS LEFT media has begun to shy away from covering this trial? How convenient as usual. Proof positive that once again its Republicans against everyone.

Hopefully Texas will have the wherewithal to disbar this shmuck.

  154. Jack Says:

You say that he doesn’t have any evidence, Magistrate, but how do you know that? We won’t know the evidence until the trial begins. Anything else is a presumption that Ronnie Earle is guilty of not having evidence before he even shows his evidence. And I thought that was your “problem” with the indictment in the first place… A trial is a trial, and if Tom deLay is innocent, the court will say so. If not, then he’ll go to jail. That’s that. Ronnie Earle’s motives do not matter (and his motives do not appear partisan at all). Only Tom DeLay matters. Talk about why Tom DeLay’s actions were not a conspiracy to get around Texas finace law.

  155. The Real Deal Says:

Why don’t all you bleeding heart Liberals go smoke your bongs, get your Starbucks coffee, and do what you do best….protest the war!!!!!!!!!!!!! Leave the real work up to the Republicans…you can thank us later.

  156. Dennis Says:

Ronnie Earl is a political hack SLUG!!!

  157. Magistrate Says:

Consider the fact that Ronnie Earle is guilty of producing fake information as well as being an extortionist. Unfortunately for you JACK, this isn’t a innocent vs guilty. This is a fact vs fiction. What DA goes after corporations intentionally for the fact, of thereafter letting them go if they make “CONTRIBUTIONS” to his favorite pet projects? Only the Federal government can go after him, and they very well should. Ronnie Earle is looking to produce a list that doesn’t exist. His evidence as well as his “selection” of grand jury is flawed.
