Religious Right ‘Too Busy to Comment’ on Pat Robertson, Quick to DeLay’s Defense

Prominent Religious Right groups went days without saying a word in defense of Pat Robertson after his assassination gaffe.

But when Tom DeLay gets in trouble, the response is immediate. Clearly, people like James Dobson and Tony Perkins know where their bread is buttered. When DeLay gets hurt, so does their right-wing agenda.

Family Research Council

Robertson: No comment.
DeLay: “Tom DeLay is a great leader for pro-family public policies of enduring importance to the nation.”

Focus on the Family

Robertson: No comment.
DeLay: “Today’s indictment of Majority Leader Tom DeLay bears all the signs of a trumped-up, political witch-hunt. The extreme left has seized this chance to take a swipe at one of America’s leading advocates of family values.”

Traditional Values Coalition

Robertson: No comment.
DeLay: DeLay is “a Christian man” and prosecutor Ronnie Earle is exacting “political retribution.”

Christian Coalition of America

Robertson: No comment.
DeLay: “Yesterday’s indictment of House Majority Leader Tom DeLay on an unsubstantiated charge of conspiracy… [has] been a major objective for the past several years of the extreme left wing and enthusiastically supported by their sychophants in the ‘Old Media.’”

Perhaps the Religious Right would like to weigh in on Tom Delay’s own comparison of himself to Jesus.

I would not dare to so dishonor my Creator God by attaching His name to that book (the Bible).

Among the most detestable villains in history, you could not find one worse than Moses. Here is an order, attributed to ‘God’ to butcher the boys, to massacre the mothers and to debauch and rape the daughters. I would not dare so dishonor my Creator’s name by (attaching) it to this filthy book (the Bible).

It is the duty of every true Deist to vindicate the moral justice of God against the evils of the Bible.

Accustom a people to believe that priests and clergy can forgive sins…and you will have sins in abundance.

The Christian church has set up a religion of pomp and revenue in pretended imitation of a person (Jesus) who lived a life of poverty.

The issue is this: will the matter be settled in a court or on Fox News? Reality is as simple as that.

  7. Look says:

“U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld revealed Friday that videos and ‘a lot more pictures’ exist of the abuse of Iraqis held at Abu Ghraib prison.

“‘If these are released to the public, obviously it’s going to make matters worse,’ Rumsfeld told the Senate Armed Services Committee. ‘I mean, I looked at them last night, and they’re hard to believe.’

“The embattled defense secretary fielded sharp and skeptical questions from lawmakers as he testified about the growing prisoner abuse scandal. A military report about that abuse describes detainees being threatened, sodomized with a chemical light and forced into sexually humiliating poses.

“Charges have been brought against seven service members, and investigations into events at the prison continue.

“Military investigators have looked into — or are continuing to investigate — 35 cases of alleged abuse or deaths of prisoners in detention facilities in the Central Command theater, according to Army Secretary Les Brownlee. Two of those cases were deemed homicides, he said.

“‘The American public needs to understand we’re talking about rape and murder here. We’re not just talking about giving people a humiliating experience,’ Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina told reporters after Rumsfeld testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee. ‘We’re talking about rape and murder — and some very serious charges.’

“A report by Maj. Gen. Antonio Taguba on the abuse at the prison outside Baghdad says videotapes and photographs show naked detainees, and that groups of men were forced to masturbate while being photographed and videotaped. Taguba also found evidence of a ‘male MP guard having sex with a female detainee.’

“Rumsfeld told Congress the unrevealed photos and videos contain acts ‘that can only be described as blatantly sadistic, cruel and inhuman.’”

The military later screened some of the images for lawmakers, who said they showed, among other things, attack dogs snarling at cowed prisoners, Iraqi women forced to expose their breasts, and naked prisoners forced to have sex with each other.

In the same period, reporter Seymour Hersh, who helped uncover the scandal, said in a speech before an ACLU convention: “Some of the worse that happened that you don’t know about, ok? Videos, there are women there. Some of you may have read they were passing letters, communications out to their men … . The women were passing messages saying ‘Please come and kill me, because of what’s happened.’

“Basically what happened is that those women who were arrested with young boys/children in cases that have been recorded. The boys were sodomized with the cameras rolling. The worst about all of them is the soundtrack of the boys shrieking that your government has. They are in total terror it’s going to come out.”

Terry can’t wait to see them. He’s gonna get wood.

The issue has been decided. That’s why the last minute change from Dreier, a placeholder who can be easily bumped on the off chance DeKay is cleared, to Blunt, who is there for good. 16. David B says:

Ah yes, religion, the opiate of the people. These perverse anti-christ religious paraders wouldn’t know a Christian if Christ himself was in their midst. They support the hipocrite, Delay, because they are afraid that one of their names will be connected. I beleive Ralph Reid was already mentioned, as fliting too close to the flame of Delay’s candle.

I’d like to know how much each of these Christian organizations contributed to hurricane relief over the past several weeks. The answers may force a debate on their Christian attitude and lack of compassion. It might shead some light on their family values for the next election and there after.

As for this ‘charge’, did anyone notice that Reid donated money to the church, not the other way around? For there to be ‘bribery’ usually you get something in exchange. In this case Reid was involved with giving money to an organization he thought was doing good work. He donated his own personal money to them. The fact that free republicans would be so desperate and DELUSIONAL to think this is even similar to the DeathStar enron money laundering scheme of Delay’s is LAUGHABLE!

    WHAT RETARDED FOOLS!!!

  32. Marie says:

Organized religion is at the root of evil.
Didn’t Jesus preach something about going into a closet to pray alone, rather than be seen as pretentious?
These guys need a reminder of the seven deadly sins as they are guilty of the sin of avarice. They are so concerned with their own wealth and benefit that they will defend a snake like Delay because they know which side their bread is buttered. Robertson is merely a nut case.
They are disgraceful, certainly un-Christian, and otherwise a group of the worst sinners among us — they have influence on the lives of many and their lies, their greed, their hypocrisy is despicable.

  33. Patriot says:

Evil people are evil with or without organized religion.

  34. Patriot says:

Prayer is in the heart, yes. That’s what Jesus said. Then Paul said go be evangelical. It confuses Christians.

  35. Marie says:

#35, hmmm. That is confusing. Except “Christian” is based upon “Christ” so shouldn’t his admonitions take precedence over Paul?

  36. Patriot says:

When I was Christian, I thought 2 things about Paul. 1, He was a symbol of a Jew converting to Jesus. Saul=Paul. or 2, he was a false prophet.
Nowadays I see him as the first ever televangelist/con artist. Paul is how modern families model their family systems. It’s gross.

  37. Ryan Neat says:

I prefer the gnostic gospels. To me the reveal why christianity was such a powerful force in the early centuries. The choice rome made of 4 unnamed, unauthenticated and unsigned manuscripts as the ‘4 gospels’ I think was a poor choice. Many of the other gnostic texts were better written and more ‘authentic’ in their message from my perspective. And giving each a name of an apostle was just sleazy…

It’s interesting as well, because in the Gnostic Gospels, mary had a much more critical role. Clearly she was the chosen disciple and not paul. It could explain why he was such a frightful and bitter man – having been slighted by the choice of a woman…

Seems like he must have been a CONservative – those ‘family values’ sexist hate filled genes run deep in most cultures…

Also many of the gnostic texts refer to the ‘true goddess’ who was the creator, and that the god of the jews is a fraud. This is of course in reference to Asherah – who was the original ‘goddess’ that most middle easterners (including the jews) worshipped originally. Moses and subsequent generations of Rabbi attempted to purge the records of her – but some references have survived. In particular references to ‘worship on the mountain’ refer to practices of goddess worship.

Of course christians like to believe the word was handed from Jesus, but he never actually wrote anything down. All of the written documents apparently occurred much later, and are thorougly unauthenticated. And different individual churches even had radically different ‘versions’ of the supposed same doctrines. That’s why the ‘catholic’ church tried to ‘create’ (eg. fabricate) a bible in the 4th century and kill everyone and destroy every document that didn’t submit to the standard teachings. Quite a bloodthirsty and ‘unchristian’ lot they were…

  38. I-RIGHT-I says:

    I prefer the gnostic gospels.

comment by Ryan “I once visited a Seminary” Neat

That’s because the Word of God is a closed book to you and that’s why it doesn’t make any sense to you. Of course you’d read the heresies.

You probably read comics instead of the classic “boys” books like Huck Finn, Treasure Island, and Penthouse Forum. That’s why you’re stupid and my guess is it’s why you’re a homosexual.

Good heavens…glad I wore my thick-soled boots! The vitriol puddles on the floor are getting deeper. I’ll mince around their edges (that’s what we pussy-footing liberals do) in order to address my point.

When it became apparent that the Chief of the Counterfeit Compassionate Conservative And Oh Yeah By The Way Conspicuously Caucasian Caucus and his Dither of Dolts had ushered in an era when the XianXrazies felt empowered to impose their vision of virtue on the rest of us, I, at 71 and a long-time believer, formed my own schismatic Church of the Apologetic Apprentice Christian. Membership one; no proselytizing permitted; one commandment: Love ye then one another; greatest duty: care for the poor and most vulnerable among us.

The “apologetic” I felt necessary because the XianXrazies have been less than kind to unbelievers and to believers of other “flavors”. Personally, I never thought God ran a restricted club or needed to gather followers by draft or impressment — He simply leaves the door open for those who choose to enter, but does not despise or hate those who do not.

The “apprentice” because … well, let’s face it: in over 2000 years we may have turned out a journeyman or two, but there’s been only one Master Practitioner, and we rather ungratefully tacked Him to a cross.

I have two rules of thumb regarding prophets: I turn a deaf ear to the obese ones — lack of restraint in feeding doesn’t seem to me consonant with godliness — which means Robertson’s jowls alone are enough to assure I don’t hear him. The other rule is that very probably no one who consider himself qualifed to preach virtue to anyone else actually is qualified. It’s that troublesome spiritual pride thingy. (And yes, I do recognize that by saying that, I show I have a goodly and blameable portion of that pride myself.)

And I have a further litmus test: Performance, not profession — or, in more familiar terms, “show me, don’t tell me”.

Mumbling pieties is not the same thing as having or practicing faith.
