Always one for finger-pointing, DeLay’s newest target in his fight against his criminal indictment? The Austin-American Statesman newspaper.
On September 28, responding to the criminal indictment, DeLay blamed a September 11 editorial by The Statesman:
(As) recently as two weeks ago, Mr. Earle himself publicly admitted I had never been a focus or target of his inquiry. Soon thereafter, Mr. Earle’s hometown newspaper ran a biting editorial about his investigation, rhetorically asking what the point had been, after all, if I wasn’t to be indicted….It was this renewed political pressure in the waning days of his hollow investigation that led this morning’s action.
A September 29 editorial in The Statesman responds:
A Sept. 11 American-Statesman editorial questioned why only the political action committees and not the individuals behind them had been indicted. DeLay was not mentioned by name, nor was there an allusion to him. It is either DeLay’s hubris or his conscience that leads him to think that the editorial targeted him.
The much-discussed September 11 editorial can be found here. As the paper’s editorial staff states, the editorial mentions several men by name, including indicted John Colyandro, but never mentions Tom DeLay.
Let’s recap: DeLay has now blamed The Austin-American Statesman, “unabashed partisan zealot” District Attorney Earle (the truth is here), a “runaway” grand jury, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, the DCCC, Rep. Rahm Emanuel, Democrats generally, and the rest of the news media.
Poor Tom DeLay.
Good, then let more editorials motivate more prosecutors to indict more republicans for their crimes.
September 30th, 2005 at 12:30 pm“This is no time to play the blame game” – McClelland
September 30th, 2005 at 12:33 pmI wonder what Delay said when Hillary blamed Bill’s problems on a vast right-wing conspiracy.
September 30th, 2005 at 12:35 pmIt is EVERYBODY’S fault, but his. This sounds ridiculously juvenile. What idiot would buy this garbage?
You can’t know how many times I hear that SAME line from people who are in jail. Look, man, they were all against me from the start. It was the cops, the DA, the judge and even the doc that were “in on it.” They just want me in jail.
He sounds EXACTLY the same. Riiiiiiiiight sure. He is nothing but a common criminal and I’ve heard it a thousand times. It is truly uncanny. Whoever defends this guy, unless he is his attorney, is no better.

I don’t care who you are, that’s funny right there…
September 30th, 2005 at 12:38 pmVery good, Larry.
September 30th, 2005 at 12:45 pmAs the old saying goes: When you don’t have a good defense, take the offense. And the more offensive, the more effective it is.
September 30th, 2005 at 12:51 pmThe spin seems ridiculous when you are aware of the gane, but, I kmnow my family members buy it hook, line, and sinker. Lies repeated easily lead those who only watch Tv for their information. I hope they throw the book at Delay. Send the Hammer to the Slammer, and make sure he gets a bunch of big strong horny cell mates,
September 30th, 2005 at 1:04 pmThe BugMan just got exterminated.
What we’re witnessing are his appendages thrashing about helplessly as his whole body keels over onto its back. All that’s left is to stick a pin in him and mount him on a board next to all those other Greedy ‘Ol Parasites who’ve been caught mismanaging The People’s money, trust, and policies.
Here’s to hoping this guy’s political career never resurrects itself. :-)
September 30th, 2005 at 1:08 pmThe Democrats are after him, especially Earle and the DCCC. Have you seen the DCCC blog lately?
It’s not like he’s guilty yet. Innocent until proven.
September 30th, 2005 at 1:25 pmA wise person would’ve stayed quiet with No Comment at this Time, but what did delay do act like the common criminal by Acting Out.delay your guilt is all over you. bye-bye I’m sure Ann Coulter will send you some cookies as she is wildly supporting you. “Wildly” isn’t use lightly.
September 30th, 2005 at 1:27 pmThat’s right up there with that horses ass brown blaming horsesass.org for his downfall. These guys are truly pscyhotic!
September 30th, 2005 at 1:35 pmWhy can’t the media just leave these guys alone? They just need a big story and choose whoever looks weakest. First Brown, then DeLay, who next?
September 30th, 2005 at 1:39 pmIf he were not so vile, he would be pathetic. He is squirming little worm. It’s everyone else’s fault. He is a victim. It’s not fair!! Boo Hoo.
September 30th, 2005 at 1:49 pmI am afraid to rejoice too soon – because until he is found guilty – I won’t believe it, but I hope he is humiliated, found guilty and punished. One less varmint in government.
They WERE leaving them alone for the past four years but they’ve had enough. The crimes of these scumbags cannot simply be brushed under the rug anymore.
September 30th, 2005 at 1:49 pmLeave them alone? I suppose the tragedy of Katrina and Rita must provide you some comfort while you sit at your home or job and comment on the plight of those (politicians) who do not care about the people they serve!!!
The media DID NOT take kickbacks, the media DID NOT take trips (On taxpayers money), the media DID NOT create a PAC to re-draw the districts, etc. (Get my point!!!) They (politicians) are to be held accountable for their actions, hence the term “Public Servant”…It is the responsibility of every citizen and media outlet to do the same.
But judging from your comment, it is this clear by your idiotic and moral lack of common sense that you’d rather stick your head in the sand, and ass up in the air before holding someone accountable for their crimes. It is easy for some people to disregard the facts concerning the loss of government representation that has poisoned America today, in the name of religion!
No Peggy!!! It is not the media who should leave them alone, but the people who should not leave them to practice such deceitful and divisive tactics to separate individuals. I believe in God and the power of prayer. Nevertheless, just as our government has been sold out from under us, so has our religion. MANY preachers, pastors, and ministers alike have sold their sold for a government handout, and as you yell “Hallelujah†on Sunday, remember one thing!
For every work a man speaks, there are many unspoken. For those without a car or home, I DO NOT see these men of the clergy opening up their doors! But then again, it is easy to say God and praise him, rather than teach God and emulate his works!
September 30th, 2005 at 1:59 pmOOps…I meant sold their soul!!!
September 30th, 2005 at 2:00 pmSomebody throw Delay a life vest, because he is sinking fast…The right to remain silent is a fundamental right that he clearly does not understand, yet the typical strategy is in full force…
Divert, Divide, Dismiss!!! That’s all that they are trying to do…
Weapons of MASS DISTRACTION??? We shall see!!!
September 30th, 2005 at 2:03 pm#13…hopefully Bush and Cheney for war crimes.
We can dream, anyway.
September 30th, 2005 at 2:13 pmI agree that the Dems should be coming out and saying now is not the time to play the blame-game. Now should be a time when everyone works together to get to the bottom of the situation.
September 30th, 2005 at 2:14 pmNobody likes me.
Everybody hates me.
I think I’ll go eat worms.
September 30th, 2005 at 2:34 pmThe exact words keep shuffling and recombining, but the formula never varies: attack them by declaring that they are attacking us, encourage hatred against them by suggesting that they hate us, undermine respect for their right to speak by asserting that they are trying to silence us, legitimize the most elaborate campaigns against them by revealing their conspiracies against us, justify our incivility toward them by pouncing on the least sign of disrespect in their treatment of us, and respond to charges like these by adducing a few examples to the effect of “they’re really the ones who are doing that to us”. Regardless of the psychology that might inwardly motivate them, the outward effect of these rhetorical devices is to project the rhetor’s own aggression onto the object of that aggression, refusing personal responsibility by portraying all of one’s actions as responses necessitated by the aggressive other. This denial of responsibility is routinely found in domestic violence cases, for example. Its most important product is confusion: simply being exposed to it makes clear thinking difficult, and its absolute genius is that any attempt to identify it (like my own here) is readily portrayed as precisely an example of it.

IRI in drag.
September 30th, 2005 at 2:42 pmI hope the MSM is ready to record all the lies and spins that will come out of this circus event. It would be great if it were on C-Span or Court TV. I’m sure one of the networks is working a deal for the movie rights as we speak.
September 30th, 2005 at 2:46 pmNotice the media hasn’t been hitting any of the big Dems lately? Why don’t they go after some of them?
September 30th, 2005 at 2:47 pm“Why can’t the media just leave these guys alone? They just need a big story and choose whoever looks weakest. First Brown, then DeLay, who next?”
Apparently you haven’t been paying attention. The next in line is Bill Frist. He is being invetigated by the SEC for securities fraud. He sold off millions of shares of stock in his own falmilies business just two weeks before the stock took a huge tumble. This saved him $2-6 million dollars in losses. All the while, his family’s company were telling stock holders that everything was fine. This is the same type of crap that Eron was doing.
Now you know, Bill Frist is next.
See, there is no guess work. It is all right in front of people, bu thtey are to blind to see it, too lazy to care or, to stupid to want to care.
September 30th, 2005 at 2:51 pm“Notice the media hasn’t been hitting any of the big Dems lately? Why don’t they go after some of them?”
Do you think that the police should go after people stealing gum or people that kill other people.
The corrupt Dems have nothing on the corrupt Repubs.
September 30th, 2005 at 2:52 pm“IRI in drag.”
That’s a redundant statement…
“Notice the media hasn’t been hitting any of the big Dems lately? Why don’t they go after some of them?â€
They’ve tried to, but they apparently are having trouble finding any dems sufficiently criminal enough to actually prosecute. But there’s a relative bonanza of crooked republicans!!
September 30th, 2005 at 3:06 pmPeggy! Peggy!! Peggy!!!
Naive may be a word to describe your beliefs, but here is a try at a common sense approach…
Some people do BAD things and for that they must answer to someone for their actions. Such is the law of the land; however, the current administration has chosen to do whatever they want to, and use the religious fanatics to solidify their position by pandering to their cause of religious based laws.
Therefore, that is why the media has called them to the carpet to explain some of their actions. However, let us not forget that there are some media friendly channels that disregard fact; in the form of opinionated journalism (i.e. FOX News). So they do have friends…Trust me!!!
The Democrats lack a backbone. They have missed opportunity after opportunity, by being OVERLY cautious, because they are afraid to offend the public with their accusations of misconduct. A decisive voice should be heard, yet no one can be separated from the crowd of murmurs. The Republicans have one thing in their favor…No matter how wrong or immoral it may be; they stick together until the end!
But the media has been harsh on the Dems (as you put it), and they should be as well. They lost with Kerry, and although Kerry WAS NOT the best choice, he was a BETTER option to the current state of America. Because, if a person changes his/her mind, then that makes them a flip-flopper, then what could be said of Bush!
Did he not say anyone involved in the (Plame) LEAK would be fired? Only to turn around and say, “If anyone committed a crime, they would be fired!â€
So, what is good for one candidate, is not for another. In this case, we discovered this error $2.5 trillon, 1900+ dead soldiers, and 4 cities too late. God didn’t send Bush to help us, but to test our faith in seeing the wolf in sheep’s clothing!
September 30th, 2005 at 3:11 pm#13 “it’s not like he’s guilty yet.” C’mon, where have you been the last 10-12+ years? Delay’s been brought up on ethics charges at least a dozen times, has been repremanded by the Ethics committee, has had rules changed to try to get away with his behaviour, the list goes on and on. He’s ALWAYS guilty!
September 30th, 2005 at 3:12 pm“The corrupt Dems have nothing on the corrupt Repubs.” There are plenty of both to go around and many of them on both sides of the aisle have had their turn in the roasting pit. Everything in this world goes in cycles so it just so happens that there are lots of people getting in trouble right now that all registered as republicans.
It’s not a conspiracy. Heck, that representative from Louisiana just got his house raided by the FBI a couple months ago and he’s a Dem.
Stop pressing the panic button. Take it down a notch. Relax.
September 30th, 2005 at 3:32 pmYa just gotta laugh at DeLay’s public defense – as if Ronnie Earle had the power to unilaterally indict whoever he felt like.
A bittersweet, fanciful and rude treatment of DeLay’s current state of mind here: http://www.hairytruth.blogspot

The fact that the Republicans are in power right now may also have something to do with it.
September 30th, 2005 at 3:48 pmWhen you have the law on your side, you argue the law.
When you have the facts on your side, you argue the facts.
When you have neither, you attack your opponent.
September 30th, 2005 at 4:26 pmGreat, another female troll. Who next? The president. HA!
September 30th, 2005 at 5:12 pmNewsflash:
At 5:12 pm today, Sep. 30, 2005, Tom DeLay held a press conference to announce that his indictment was caused by 10-year-old Arnold Miller, of Hannibal Missouri, wetting his bed last night.
September 30th, 2005 at 5:40 pmIt’s those liberal children. Ah ha!
September 30th, 2005 at 5:59 pmFor a guy who prays everyday in his House office, on his knees holding hands with various members of The FAMILY, Tommy boy should be publicly acknowledging that his god is testing him and his faith, don’t ya think? Maybe we should help him blame it on god. If their god sent hurricanes into the gulf to show the disdain for the immorality of those poor black folk and crazed whiteys of the labiral persuasion, then mighten that same god be choosing to punish the wickedness of the money changers in that there temple on both sides of the Capitol building????
September 30th, 2005 at 6:56 pmHell, Brownie (”I’m no superhero, but I do a heckuva job — just ask Georgie”) blamed a blog. I guess DeLay can blame a newspaper. Both are pitiful blowhards.
September 30th, 2005 at 7:51 pmPoor Tom “I AM the government” DeLay. Guess he’s getting a little civics lesson.
September 30th, 2005 at 7:59 pm#34 Marblex – I will remember that!
September 30th, 2005 at 10:46 pm#38, Spyder – I wonder if Tommy would ever think that God would smite him? He’s a contemporary Pharisee. Hypocritical prayer man.
September 30th, 2005 at 10:48 pmPllease refer to the house of representatives as the Republican House and the senate as the Republican Senate.
