Partisan Witchhunt? Foreman of “Runaway” Grand Jury Praises DeLay

The central pillar of Tom DeLay’s defense is that Travis Country prosecutor Ronnie Earle is an “unabashed partisan,” and that DeLay is being targeted because of his political success.

But Ronnie Earle didn’t issue the indictment against Tom DeLay. A grand jury did. And as it turns out, the jury foreman William Gibson is a former sheriff’s deputy who praises DeLay specifically for his “aggressiveness.” Via Billmon, we see that Gibson spoke out yesterday:

He did his duty and that bound him to look at Tom Delay as just another Texan accused of criminal conspiracy, [Gibson] said.

“I like his aggressiveness and everything, and I had nothing against the House majority man, but I felt that we had enough evidence, not only me, but the other grand jury members,” Gibson said.

The grand jury foreman also takes great exception to accusations that he and 11 other grand jury members followed the lead of Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle instead of following the evidence.

“It was not a rubber stamp deal. It was not an overnight deal. If we needed extra information, it was provided to us,” Gibson said. …

Gibson thinks there is enough evidence to convict Delay.

“We would not have handed down an indictment. We would have no-billed the man, if we didn’t feel there was sufficient evidence,” said Gibson.

The question is not is Mr.Delay guilty but rather will be be convicted. Yes, I believe he will be convicted handed a light sentence and be forgotten. The statement made in the Bible,” that pride goes before a fall” is true. Because of his arrogance and mean hateful sneer I can find no mercy in my heart for him, forgiveness yes, but no mercy or tolerance.

And if someone could set the record straight for me on what hand Ronnie Earle DOES have in his indictment. Any at all right now?

I’m sorry for my lack of knowledge, been trying to run a business and new website so I’ve had less time to pay attention.

Coming Soon: The Ronnie Earle Movie

For the last two years, as he pursued the investigation that led to Wednesday’s indictment of House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, Travis County, Texas prosecutor Ronnie Earle has given a film crew “extraordinary access” to make a motion picture about his work on the case.

The resulting film is called The Big Buy, made by Texas filmmakers Mark Birnbaum and Jim Schermbeck. “Raymond Chandler meets Willie Nelson on the corner of Wall Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in The Big Buy, a Texas noir political detective story that chronicles what some are calling a ‘bloodless coup with corporate cash,’” reads a description of the picture on Birnbaum’s website, markbirnbaum.com. The film, according to the description, “follows maverick Austin DA Ronnie Earle’s investigation into what really happened when corporate money joined forces with relentless political ambitions to help swing the pivotal 2002 Texas elections, cementing Republican control from Austin to Washington DC.”

“We approached him [Earle], and he offered us extraordinary access to him and, to an extent, to his staff,” Birnbaum told National Review Online Thursday. “We’ve been shooting for about two years.”

One hates to be too cynical, but it’s pretty basic: no indictment, no movie.

Thank you for posting this. Most of the spin coming out of the Right wing talking heads flies in the face of what is the actual American Justice system. The right wingers spew this crap, the gullible American media just sucks it up, unfortunately most of the Sheeple that the right targets will believe it.

I guarantee you most of the people out there don’t understand that it isn’t the DA who indicted Delay… it was a “jurry of his peers”.

Cool, a movie about the one of the most corrupt politicians ever. I’ll buy that!!

  14. Ugh says:

I sure hope Bush dosen’t pardon him like he did those 14 people.

As I mentioned on a previous thread, Bush can only pardon people convicted of a federal crime. Only the Gov of TX could pardon Delay.

  15. I-RIGHT-I says:

“We would not have handed down an indictment. We would have no-billed the man, if we didn’t feel there was sufficient evidence,” said Gibson.

Maybe we’ll get some of that evidence in the previews.
How much you wanna bet Gibson has already signed up for jury foreman in the movie?

  16. Andrew says:

Mr. DeLay asserted, essentially, that his actions were legal because “everybody does it”.

This is the fallacy of “common practice,” an evasion of logical thinking.

DeLay was not the first and probably won’t be the last. For another example, read Caro’s account of LBJ’s l94l senate race.

His defense does not stand up. The fact is that he bragged about how clever his scheme was and let everyone know that he was behind it, when in fact it was indeed nothing new. The corporate money in guys are not supposed to control what the money out guys do.

Uhhhh, one could also conclude from that that Ronnie Earle had nothing to hide when it came to putting together a case against Delay and TRMPAC. I doubt a partisan hack engaging in a partisan witchhunt is going to allow cameras to follow his every move.

Any movie is going to show what those who have followed this case from the begining already know: TRMPAC’s actions were illegal and unethical, and Tom Delay is TRMPAC.

For those that didn’t know it, this was MrFascists attack on welfare and minorities. His claim is that democrats actually pay poor people to vote for them through welfare – this is the same old tired claim the reichwing has made for decade, when in fact the opposite is ture.

The Reichwingers pay for america to vote for them by making irresponsible tax cuts when the government needs its money to be ‘fiscally responsible’. MrFascist is correct that some politicians do policies to buy votes (for instance the 8 billion in tax breaks to oil companies is a fine example) – unfortunately the party that’s continually and consistently guilty of this is the Republicans.

But like all psychotics MrFascist only can see his own flaws by projecting those on others. It’s his pathology – forgive him, he doesn’t know what he does…

  27. Jamie says:

Grand jury members are absolutely forbidden from discussing anything that went on during the grand jury, regardless of whether it’s been recorded elsewhere (ie, they cannot confirm or deny other information). Secrecy is the backbone of the grand jury system, and in Texas, a grand jury member that breaks the secrecy is subject to fines and imprisonment.

Actually it would take aborting ALL children for this statement to actually be true, since crime comes from all segments and stratus of society. Look at the crooks Delay and Frist for instance!

The reality is that to single out a specific group and say THEY are the criminals, you deny the facts and realities that exist. Poor people are more desperate and have fewer means to be Enron or Halliburton or Frist or Delay or Bush whitecollar crooks. They often use the more primitive and only available means to do so. But this is a function of poverty more than race. And since african americans are kept in more poverty because of KKKrazy racists like MrWrongFascistFreak – there is more crime due to their increased level of poverty.

This is why crime tends to drop when the economy improves – because poverty also drops.

So I correct your stupidity, your ignorance and your racism.

    Mr. Butthead WAS wrong,

    1) because violent crime rates are tied more to poverty than race
    2) because the only way to end crime would be to wipe out ALL children, eg. the human race, because crime always surfaces (look at you, you’re nothing but a lying treasonous terrorist – that’s truly criminal)
    3) because the Butthead’s answer was to the question of crime and poverty – and he only mentioned black people – forgetting that crime rates among meth addicted redneck whites is is as or higher!

So once again MrNazi shows he’s stupid, ignorant, racist, illogical AND irrational. And his arguments look more like mudpies than masterful creations…

He didn’t discuss the proceedings. He discussed the merits of their decision. The proceedings would include specific charges or testimony that would prove useful in defense of the case – which he clearly did not do.

To simply say, well of course there was evidence and of course it was sufficient, because that’s the law and we complied with it – is not revealing any ’secrets’ or ‘proceedings’. A rational person would know this to already be truth – he’s just confirming this to an irrational republican horde all suffering from mass hysteria.

Ryan “watch out for my hemorrhoids” Neat is now an expert on Texas law. I’d bet he thinks so because he got busted down in Montrose for pandering and spent the night in the Harris County pokey. HA! Ryan the homo was in the pokey! He got poked in the pokey! By a Smokey! HA! Sometimes I really love me!

  80. Marie says:

IRI is out of his mind. Obsessed with sex and perversion. Typical right-wing insanity. He must have missed his medication today.

  81. Ryan Neat says:

Marblex described losers like MrPervert perfectly…

When you have the law on your side, you argue the law.

When you have the facts on your side, you argue the facts.

When you have neither, you attack your opponent.

  82. Jamie says:

Maybe I’m naive, having grown up in a rather liberal part of the country and all — but I have never seen such proud racism until I started getting involved in politics and started talking to die-hard conservatives. The way I was raised, racism was shameful — something to be embarrased about when it surfaced in someone you knew.

But now, the men and women running this country no longer even try to hide their racism. The GOP tried to court the black vote on one hand — with Ken Mehlman actually apologizing for the Southern Strategy, and the attempt to include the religious black community in gay bashing (because there has to be an other to hate, apparently) — but then you have Sean Hannity and the other GOP cheerleaders defending these comments by Bennett — as if we didn’t get that he didn’t actually mean he wanted to abort black babies, completely missing the fact that what was offensive was the casual, “I’m only saying what everyone is thinking” connection between race and crime.

Then you have people like IRI who really make up the heart of the GOP. I’m hoping that his most racist of comments is just for shock value — an attempt to enrage us “filthy liberals.” But I suspect it isn’t an act. I have met many people like IRI — people who never question that they are good, decent Americans, but toss off the racist comments like nothing — like no one gets hurt.

But there is a kind of desperation in IRI’s (and others like him) comments — a hateful “what do you mean I’m not a good person?!” kind of defensiveness that is really sad. IRI is the reason the GOP as it stands will not last. Outrage and anger can only last so long.

  83. Sharon Cox says:

Your right Jamie, it doesn’t take very long for their foul language, self hatred and hate for every one else to catch up with them. Soon people tire of even responding to them for the sake of argument or in hopes of waking them up..Then they have to return to their lonely, bitter thoughts…They are the unwanted and un accepted. They delude themselves thinking they are better than others and will some how fare better because of their miserable beliefs, ever following after liers and thieves that have stolen their soles. The realy sad thing for them is they don’t realize, we are all in this together, they will not fare any better than the least of us…..Blessings

  84. I-RIGHT-I says:

You guys are really pathetic. Hey, lookit, if you can’t stand the heat stay away from the cook. If I have to listen to any more of your crying and whining because you can’t keep up I’ll just have to start ignoring you and go pick on someone else.

But here’s a little clue for the clueless. The reason you can’t keep up is you don’t have a leg to stand on. The Filthy Left is always wrong about nearly everything and deep down you know it. It’s pretty hard to argue your despicable platform when you don’t believe it yourselves.

It’s my belief we’ve got several different kinds of people here and frankly it’s hard for me to tell the difference because you’re all pretty ignorant and in fact lacking style and even the semblance of class. We’ve got some real young Lefties here that’s pretty obvious. Easy to manipulate and eager to please. We’ve got some older Lefties, pretty tired of all the bullshit but unable to let go of the sixties and seventies when the Left actually had some pretty good brains running the show. Then we’ve got the die hard, true grit, absolutely insane killers of American culture, traditions and all that we as a country hold sacred. I’ve got a pretty good idea who you are but you keep a pretty low profile and are too smart to show all your cards. You’re the dangerous ones and you’re the first ones we’re going to hang on the courthouse steps one day. I hope I’m around to see it.

Now, you babies quit your whining and get down to the business of showing America what the Left is all about. I want to see some real venom for our leadership, military, for Christians and all the normal people who don’t think it’s a good idea to allow homosexuals access to children. Get busy!

    Peace-Love-Dove y’all!

I can’t believe anyone here bothers to respond to anything said by I-RIGHT-I. As far as paying people to vote one way or another, think back to the late 20’s and early 30’s. How many people in this country were slowly starving to death. No jobs, farms failing, stock market dead because of manipulation by a few very rich. Look what happened in Germany and Russia, large numbers of people forced to live in abject poverty, revolution was in the air, and it was happening here too. If not for FDR then what? More Hoover? At least the ‘New Deal’ provided something for the vast majority of people economically speaking…. It’s pretty hard to pull yourself up by your bootstraps if you barefoot….

I can’t believe you took the time to write that bullshit. WTF does the New Deal got to do with you ratbastardcommiemofo’s ruining this country and putting all our lives as risk? Abject poverty blah, blah, blah…Hoover blah, bootstrap blah…get off your ass and go to work like the majority of us and quit ‘yer bitch’n. Just a bunch of whining pussies, I got ‘yer “revolution” right here in my pants.

  87. Marie says:

IRI has gone insane. He professes to defend America but he wants to destroy everything it stands for because he wants it only his way — autocracy.
He is born out of his era — he should have been in the SS under Hitler because his philosophy is much more in accord with the Nazi party. He should be left alone to rant.

  88. La Marsailles says:

“Donks?” Sorry, dude, that one missed the dartboard and gave me the best laugh I’ve had today. I guess your rapier-like wit’s a little dull. Thanks for the cartoon image.
“Filthy Left?” Yup, we all look like Maynard G Krebs and hang out at the coffee house with our berets on; talking about smashing the state while we wait for our SSI checks to arrive. Remember to include “beatnick” in your list of stereotype insult words.
Your little pea brain’s full of simple cartoon images, isn’t it, you silly little jackass?
The people you’re defending have more contempt for you than you do for yourself. More contempt than you have for us. They thrive on tiny-dick social rejects like you. They lie to you so you’ll channel your delusional hatred against your fellow countrymen. They prey on the sick, disaffected castoffs like you. In the chaos that ensues, they operate to rob us all of our lives, our resources, our time, and our energy- yours as well as ours. This is the biggest crime wave our nation has ever seen. You think you’re a loyal henchman; you think you’ll be “in on it” when the victorious “day of triumph” arrives. But it’s all a sad and vicious illusion.
They don’t care about you. They’re using you. And that’s never going to change. We have a better way.

You poor deluded slob. You can’t even see it, can you?

I hate the French, they pretty much invented the Filthy Left. Maynard? You give yourself too much credit. Compared to the weasels I’m talking about and the kind of filth they live in Maynard was All American. I’d give you a lesson but even french sounding handles make me itch. Get a job.

Hey IRI? You awfully quiet today? Not feeling well? Take two rat poison pellets and don’t call me, call the undertaker, but you should do it now, not in the morning, K?

SNAPPP!!! The sound of a rat trap going off. I knew if I didn’t get you with the comment, the “La Marseilles” would make you go for the bait. I shouldn’t give myself too much credit- this is like shooting bloated trash fish in a barrel.

Please- understand- the people you’re defending are using you. They despise you. They only want to use you as a goon, fu*k you up the ass, and throw you away when you’re too damaged. Why do you support and cover for people who treat you that way?

  93. Jamie says:

    La Marsailles,

Don’t bother. IRI is completely gone. His rhetoric is so close to the nazi anti-jewish hate speak that he doesn’t even see it. “filthy.” “dangerous.” And my personal favorite: “…you’re the first ones we’re going to hang on the courthouse steps one day.”

IRI is not worth your pity. He’s not worth your time. It’s sad, but my god — how hateful does someone have to be before we finally ignore him?

I’ve been a little busy. Shopping for a new assault weapon, cleaning my sheets, punishing my Negra house slave and in general having a wonderful time here deep in Mexican territory. (Houston)

  95. I-RIGHT-I says:

Why do you support and cover for people who treat you that way?

    Comment by La “Homo” Marsailles

That’s what you say yet I have found no evidence that I’m being screwed by my side any worse than you are by yours. Your side has a history of murdering their useful idiots where my side doesn’t have a history of every having any.

What I do find over and over and over again here is how inept the Filthy Left is at construction arguments. Your favorite trick and you do it all the time is accusing your enemy of what you yourself love to do or are guilty of. By the way the French do suck the big one. I think Ryan is French.

  96. La Marsailles says:

The French midwived this nation into existence. They are a mature republic who long ago experienced the tribulations our nation is involved in now. For that, and other reasons, they’ve got my admiration and respect. We wouldn’t be here as the USA if it weren’t for the French. That is a fact. No slanderous, ignorant comments you say can ever change that. I am eternally grateful to the French. Vive La France!

  97. I-RIGHT-I says:

Question gay French guy; What did you call the French before the Americans showed up?

    Answer: Germans

I think Lafayette would consider the debt paid and if he were alive today lead another Revolution to cleanse the Filth from French soil. I further believe that the fact that you’d have to kill just about every Frenchman to clean the place up wouldn’t bother him on whit.

Also on a personal note. If you admire France then you either have zero knowledge of French history and perfidy or are just scum yourself.

  98. arkboy says:

BLAh BLAH BLAH BLAh BLAH…you are all Whiners who cant stand it that your idiot Dashle finally got what was coming to him. Now its revenge time…..We’ll see!!!!!
