DeLay’s Smear Campaign Against Earle Unravels

Tom DeLay has used Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle’s indictment of former Texas attorney general Jim Mattox as proof that that Earle is a “liberal political fanatic.” Here’s DeLay on Fox News this Wednesday:

The political situation in Texas back in those days was conservative Democrats against liberal Democrats. He indicted the lieutenant governor, a conservative Democrat. He indicted Jim Mattox, the attorney general…This is just the sleaziest of politics. He is a fanatic, a liberal political fanatic.

Jim Mattox, however, has a much different view. Appearing on Fox and Friends this morning, he was asked if he thought Earle was politically motivated:

I don’t think he’s overly political. I think he’s been, frankly, very tenacious about this and more tenacious than what most of us would have thought possible because Delay and his friends have spent probably $2 or $3 million on legal fees in an effort to try to hide the facts of this particular matter. I think that the facts in this particular case were so egregious that any district attorney should have taken a look at the matter.

Man, I bet everytime a talkingpoint self destructs like that somebody at FauxNews has a stroke.

"AAAAGGH!! Our carefully crafted bubble of lies is being punctured on our own network! Who's idea was it to put him on the air??? You're FIRED!!! Go get a job at the White House!"

  2. dano347 Says:

Any "ham sandwich" apologists care to comment? Here's a "ham sandwich" (Mattox)who knows which way the political bread is buttered in Texas - and he says it's no partisan witch-hunt. Spin that flunkies!

  3. Tommydee Says:

    oops.

  4. yankeluh Says:

As a suppporter of Jim Mattox I was ticked off at Ronnie for going after Jim, because I thought it was unfounded. However, Ronnie Earle is the most honest District Attorney in the State of Texas and if anyone can bring down that buffoon Delay, it will him. As Molly Ivins says, "Good on you, Ronnie Earle!"

  5. Electric-Escape.net Says:

    Stuff You Should Read

"Earle is a political fanatic, just ask Jim Mattox here!" "Actually, I think he's very fair."

  6. afterthought Says:

It is rather nice that he would say this.
One gets the impression that Ronnie is repected
by quite a few people who are not on Ronnie's
side of the fence, whether by party or sides
    in court.
There used to be quite a few people like that,
but it seems like "the uniter" and his party
have fixed that problem most everywhere.

  7. Ryan Neat Says:

Facts never change the minds of Reichwingers - they live in Mr. Rogers world of CONservative fantasies. That's why they think the earth is 8000 years old and that a tiny clump of undifferentiated cells is human being...

Their world is pure fiction, bounded by a book of fantasy and fairy tales...

  8. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

Um - this one is nothing. If Scooter Libby or Rove get indicted, I will concede that Bush is f*cked.

Earle IS a partisan. The left is making a movie about him. Gimme a break. This isn't going to take the left where they want to go. Feel free to discount yourselves though.

"Their world is pure fiction, bounded by a book of fantasy and fairy tales… " Gee Ryan, that what most people probably think of you.

  9. Ryan Neat Says:

"Earle IS a partisan. The left is making a movie about him. Gimme a break. This isn’t going to take the left where they want to go. Feel free to discount yourselves though."

    Blah Blah Blah

    Accusation - no proof.

The republican head of the Grand Jury says there's enough evidence to go to trial. That's a FACT, all you present is an accusation and assumption that the facts contradict. Much in the same way as creationism - yet your side has never been capable of distinguishing or processing 'Facts'...

  10. Ryan Neat Says:

"“Their world is pure fiction, bounded by a book of fantasy and fairy tales… ” Gee Ryan, that what most people probably think of you."

Yes, but the people that believe this also believe in a flat earth and creationism. Delusions don't bring facts, but a lack of facts bring on delusions. Your choice to live in a world of delusion - is your choice. But it doesn't make you right - it makes you nuts...

  11. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

Ryan - please stop denigrating Christians. It's offensive and hateful.

Earle will be treated with the same respect Ken Starr was by Democrats. In other words, he'll be destroyed.

  12. Zookeeper Says:

Last time I looked, you don't get indicted because you are conservative, liberal, or because the prosecutor is conservative or liberal, but because there is an allegation or even actual evidence that YOU HAVE COMMITTED A CRIME.

  13. Praxxus Says:

Biting the finger that points at you

Over at Think Progress is a post about DeLay using Ronnie Earle's prosecution of former Texas Attorney General Jim Mattox to shore up his claims that Earle is a "liberal political fanatic."

  14. wisedup Says:

Mr Bush, we have a Supreme Court Justice for you:
    Ronnie Earle

  15. Andrew Says:

Last time I checked, Ken Starr isn't doing too badly. He's still got a job, a normal life. He's not rotting in jail or begging for change under an overpass.

So what exactly do you mean he'll be destroyed?

  16. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

Zoo - if you are that intellectually dishonest, fine. It's not worth a debate. Earle is a partisan liar. Can't wait til the House GOP does an investigation between Earl and McDermott's office. It will be fun to watch Dems burn for a change.

  17. Amy Says:

Maybe we should start referring to Delay in the past tense as in "Delied". Please, oh, please God, let this crooked lying neanderthal windbag scuttle out on his last legs (like the cockroach he is).

  18. Peace Lover Says:

NED - "It will be fun to watch Dems burn for a change."

So Neddy boy finally admits that the repukes are burning! Good for you young whippersnapper. Unfortunately for the Repukes, the Dems won't be burning for the same reasons.

  19. afterthought Says:

NeD you are a sad, sad troll.
Spin and spin but not a fact to be found.
We know Rove told you to recite "partisan",
but the judge and jury will decide.

  20. Spudge_Boy Says:

Hey, since I was raise Christian, I will denigrate them for Ryan.

Most Christian zealots are sheep that can't think for themselves. I asked my mom last night if she had heard that Tom DeLay was indicted. She asked who he was. I asked if she knew that Bill Frist was being investigated and she asked what the SEC was.

She voted for Bush because her pasture told her to.

    Christian are non-thinking zombies.

    Go fvck yourself NeD.

  21. Southwest Enigma Says:

Zoo - if you are that intellectually dishonest, fine. It’s not worth a debate.

It's never worth a debate to these guys because that would require critical thinking skills. Diatribe is all they have to offer.

    Earle is a partisan liar.

Back that one up gas bag.

Can’t wait til the House GOP does an investigation between Earl and McDermott’s office.

Wouldn't that be a partisan witch hunt?

It will be fun to watch Dems burn for a change.

So..Reps have all the power in the house, the senate and the executive branch...and they're burning? This will definitely require an explanation. But instead will be replied to by squealing like a pig.

  22. Jonathan Says:

    NeD,
As a Christian and a non-creationist, I take offense at your characterization of all Christians as anti-scientific throwbacks who insist on believing in creationism.

  23. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

Southwest - sorry. I know it sucks when your only power base in Washington is the double A's in Hillary's vibrator.

  24. David Berkowitz Says:

Neddy, buddy, I think you're ready to take over. Wipe the foam from around your mouth, go and get yourself a .45 and hit the streets. Oh yes and listen to the voices in your head, they'll tell you what to do...

  25. Jonathan Says:

    Oh, and NeD,
You really ARE sounding pretty despondent and desperate these days. Simply claiming that the DA is "partisan" doesn't make it so. Just as falsely equating Earle and Starr doesn't make it so, either (Starr didn't have a Grand Jury back up his work with an indictment, for one thing).

  26. Jonathan Says:

    NeD,
You've outright lost it. Take some time off, get a grip, then come back. You're not doing your cause any favors right now.

Trust me on this. Or don't. Take your pick. I'd prefer that my opponents lose on the merits, not due to lack of sleep, drugs, stress or what have you.

  27. Southwest Enigma Says:

Southwest - sorry. I know it sucks when your only power base in Washington is the double A’s in Hillary’s vibrator.

    I rest my case.

  28. jparker Says:

NeD’s not a Patriot by any definition, and certainly not an American from a ‘traditional value’ perspective. He claims to be conservative, but in fact knows nothing of the Constitution. He sits twitching in his own little vacuum, soaking up his perceived power he gets through some vague ideological connection he has with his Party. The principals don’t matter, just the Power. The only satisfaction he gets is to feebly try to project that power anonymously onto folks who care about this country and would like to see things change for ALL of our benefit; Dem, Republican, Independent, Greens, etc.

You won’t ever see a guy like NeD debating an issue publicly, unless he’s screaming alongside other NeoCons at Gold Star Moms (’cause it feels sooo good) outside the Crawford ranch. That’s the extent of his bravery. He would never actually fight for his Country, even though he’s 29 and should be enrolled in the NY National Guard, fighting for what he believes (NeD- there’s room for you, as the Guard missed its quota this summer).

NeD is being spoon-fed poop and he LOVES the taste. That’s why he follows the Talking Points so closely. BTW NeD - you might want to consider a vacation in North Korea, you’d like it there…they tell you what to think and say there too.

The only way he can feel powerful is to wax sophomoric on a blog about he gets to WIN vicariously through his Party, no matter what the cost; no matter that a guy like DeLay would throw NeD under a bus if it gave him one more ounce of power- just like he threw Abramoff under a bus. The fact that he pulled down previous post from his Blog demonstrates what kind of character he has; how he can’t stand by his own words. What a sad guy.

NeD- when you sign your Guard paperwork, be sure you post it on that expansive, well-trafficked & detail-oriented blog of yours. We all can’t wait for reports from the “Baghdad NeD” Road Show.

  29. progressive and proud Says:

NeD sure has a thing for Hillary, eh? He obviously either wants her or wants to be her. Boy are these trolls getting more obtuse by the hour. Why are they so obsessed with sex anyway? It seems to creep into every other post of theirs.

Sometimes, trolls, a cigar is just a cigar.

  30. progressive and proud Says:

These weirdos would smear their own mother if she got in the way of their "agenda." Noncaring, nonfeeling greedy warmongers.

  31. David B Says:

Thanks Jim Mattox, still a democrat at heart. Delay, grease up with the K-Y gel, it's coming on you big and hard.

  32. progressive and proud Says:

IRI talks about my short dick and NeD talks about all of my abortions. Oh and Ryan Neat's ass is quite talked about in trolldom. What gives, dudes? What happened that you have such a abnormal sexual attitude?

Just for curiosity's sake, I wonder how people end up like y'all. I mean, not for the sake of me rearing children, I just have abortions all the time. It's kind of fun, really, like staying at the Astrodome.

  33. twoplustwoisfour Says:

Please excuse the lack of trolls while the troll center is being outsourced to India. Indian trolls are much smarter, work harder, are more polite, write better English and are willing to do that for even less money than the pitiful hacks you have put up with so far.

  34. progressive and proud Says:

    Hahahahahahahahaha. Very clever

  35. Marie Says:

The trolls are showing increasing desperation. They lash out irrationally. They are watching their leaders (religious and political) disintegrate.
And who said Ken Starr has been destroyed? Not the last time I looked. And his Modus Operandi was 8 years of fishing that turned up nothing of substance, except the sex scandal that so enthralls the right-wing religious wackos.
Earle apparently has the respect of his opponents, as well as his friends, he has been described by many from both political parties as an honest, uncorrupted prosecutor.

  36. Bozo the Conservative Clown! Says:

Southwest - sorry. I know it sucks when your only power base in Washington is the double A’s in Hillary’s vibrator.

    Comment by The Northeast Dilemma — September 30, 2005 @ 5:12 pm

Hillary is more of a man than you will ever be! She uses 10 12V auto batteries hooked up in a series-parallel configuration for her vibrator!

  37. progressive and proud Says:

They are starting to show their teeth, er fangs. I still can't comprehend what kind of mind lets themselves ultimately devolve to sex. Good grief.

  38. Jonathan Says:

    Marie,
Starr also never got a Grand Jury to indict Clinton. That whole affair was a politically-driven frivolous lawsuit from the get-go. DeLay's problems are far, far more serious.

  39. Bozo the Conservative Clown! Says:

Tommy Boy. Great buddy picture. I think our Tommy boy is running out of buddies fast. Not to worry, he will find some new buddies in the slammer. The Hammer in the Slammer! It's Slammer time! And he can try saying "You can't touch this!" all he wants. I don't think it will help.

  40. Bozo the Conservative Clown! Says:

Are yew a girl P&P? Dayumm!

  41. Pablo in Mexico Says:

Earle has a sideshow all ready for punk ass DeLay. His investigators have been looking into how DeLay has amassed such huge personal wealth.

Thats easy enough. Compare what he takes in at fundraisers and compare it with what goes on the books.

The foreman of the jury says the evidence shows DeLay is guilty. That is good enough for me.

DeLay has his attorneys working on a plea bargain to reduce the charges to some misdemeanor offense. This, in itself, proves his guilt. If innocent, why even think of pleading to a lesser charge? Eh what Tom!!

  42. scotty g Says:

Looking forward to the first pics of Delay, Frist, and Rovey behind bars, or better yet, digging some ditches near some highway in Tuscaloosa. Earle, partisan?? You bet ya'...so what of it?

  43. progressive and proud Says:

Bozo, I must confess, I am woman, hear me roar.

  44. progressive and proud Says:

Hey Pablo - he sued a company on behalf of his father and made a bit of deniro from that. Torte reform my ass.

  45. Bozo the Conservative Clown! Says:

I look like DeNiro... in a clowny kind of way. Oh! You meant dinero!

  46. progressive and proud Says:

Give me a break Bozo - it's been a long day and I took French in school. Oh boy, here come the trolls now that they know I speak French. I'm sure they will tell to go there. Oy vey!!

  47. Bozo the Conservative Clown! Says:

    He-he!

  48. Bozo the Conservative Clown! Says:

Oy vey? So that's what french sounds like!

  49. Jay Says:

I have a theory about Tom Delay and his past as an exterminator. Please tell me if I'm way out in left field on this or if it's plausible.

Exterminator's, by definition, have access to chemicals. Deadly chemicals. They rely on deadly chemicals and someoe has to supply them. Tom Delay, I'm assuming, made his fortune while in this line of work before his impeccable credentials and moral values (wink..wink) carried him to the lofty heights of House Majority leader. One of his rivals and a true target for the right (see John Thune) is Tom Daschle. Way back in 01' and early 02' when we had the "anthrax" scare, which Senator got a happy anthrax letter in the mail in his D.C. office? Tom Daschle.

Does anyone besides me think that the bug killer is a very legitimate place to look for our "anthrax mailer"? Maybe I'm outta line here....maybe I missed the news, but I think he's just that evil.

  50. Innocent Bystander Says:

Where's that masochist, Mr. NED? Past time for your evening flogging.

  51. Marie Says:

#49 Hmmmm. He IS evil. I don't know if bug exterminators equate to knowledge of anthrax, but you present a verrry interesting theory. Hmmmm.

  52. Jay Says:

    Marie,

I admit that this a full-blown conspiracy theory and it's been kicking around in my brain for years, all the recent attention to Delay just prompted me to throw it out there. I'm pretty sure that some rightwing nutjob is responsible for sending the anthrax letter to Daschle and I'm also pretty sure that whomever is responsible was pretty sure that they'd get away with it and was taking advantage of the chaos and fear that most Americans were feeling in the wake of 9/11. Who's a better suspect than the evil GOP House leader, the self-styled Hammer, the guy with all the chemistry connections? It's certainly worth pondering.

  53. Leslie Says:

When are the corporate media going to stop concentrating on Earle and start concentrating on the charges against DeLay?

  54. Ryan Neat Says:

    Leslie,

When Rove tells them to... The Reichwing propaganda machine is nothing more than a republican whore... They lay down wherever and whenever their patron pays them to.

  55. Susan Says:

#28, you described NED to a tee!

#49 "Does anyone besides me think that the bug killer is a very legitimate place to look for our “anthrax mailer”?

Your absolutely correct about the availablility of pesticides to DeLay.

I've concluded that the anthrax scare was just another scare tactic to gain support to attack Iraq.

Look at how this new flu virus is upon us when DeLay and Frist are in major trouble.

You're theory could be 100% fact.

  56. Susan Says:

In Frist's little brain, he becomes an American Hero when he finds a cure for the new flu virus.

  57. Skid Says:

Has the FBI closed the case on the anthrax letter? Due to the overall effectiveness of the anthrax letter, I'm surprised a second or third attempt hasn't been sent to another politically high profile individual or location. Oh well, we'll solve that one right after we bring Osama Been Forgotten to justice, right?

  58. kjlovell Says:

    Personally I love ham sandwiches.

I also know a phony and a liar when I see one on TV. Dumbya, Rove, Crash-cart-cheeney, delay, roberts, frist....

I think we are seeing the ship sink.....and the rats are worried. Faux news rats, judas miller rats, gannon rats......

It is so totally funny to watch. I pay no attention to them trying to smear their accusers, looks way too much like troll droppings on this blog.

Time to celebrate approaching.... get the champagne! (not bertha champagne)

  59. kjlovell Says:

I love Ryan's comment: you don't get indicted because you are conservative or liberal......you get indicted because you are doing things that are against the law!

    AMEN BROTHER!

They would cry partisan no matter who was calling them to account for their actions.

They are criminals, not conservative nor liberal, just CRIMINALS! Let them serve time, all of them including dumbya and crash cart cheeney.

  60. kjlovell Says:

#28 KUDOS!!!! That is so totally nor-east dimentia to a TEEE!

The sad thing about it, he won't realize that he is so pitiful, and he will never wake up. But we all see it for what it is, a poor excuse with no friends that tries to bully in a blog!

You all know the type, the loud drunk at the end of a bar that won't shut up no matter how stupid they sound. The loud person in a restaurant that is never happy with the meal. The guy on a plane or in line that is SOOO important that everyone must kiss his shoes. That's right, the ones we feel sorry for! The ones that we say I bet their spouse is ashamed!

    that's dimentia all right!

  61. kjlovell Says:

By the way, aren't all the REPUGnican senators donating to this delay defense fund?

  62. Pablo in Mexico Says:

    Everyone listen up!

You want to help the progressive movement?

Here is a little thing that might help. When referring to the house of representatives, call it the Republican House. When referring to the Senate, call it the Republican Senate.

Do you realize that well over 50% of the folks in the US dont know or realize that all three branches of government are controlled by the pukes?

  63. Bozo The Conservative Clown Says:

That's not NED. I knew NED. I dealt with NED, and you sir are no NED. The real Northeast Dilemma is how to get neanderthals like NED to move to Alabama.

  64. Blue State Red Says:

It doesn't surprise me that Jim Mattox, now an elder statesman of the Texas Democratic Party, can find positive things to say about Ronnie Earle - now that Earle has trained his sights on Tom DeLay. My guess is that he didn't find Ronnie Earle quite so endearing a character when Earle prosecuted him in 1985 for felony bribery. Mattox was the Texas AG at the time, and was considered to be a strong future candidate for governor. Mattox was re-elected as AG, but he never became Governor. Thank you, Mr. Earle.

Of course, we all know who eventually did become the Texas Governor, and where he went from there. Maybe before all you lefties wet yourself with excitement over an indictment that will never be proven, you should consider the unintended consequences of Ronnie Earle's zeal. When he loses this case, the left in general and Democrats in particualr will be even less popular than they are now.

  65. Ryan Neat Says:

    BSR,

If yor premise was 'right' and he would want to appear as a moderate to reach republicans - surely he would attack Earle. Your premise is irrational and illogical as every discussion point you've posted. Everything you print only proves the opposite of what you way it does. You express the very definition of partisan by the way - as do most people who vote for your crappy excuse of a modern fascist party...

  66. Bobo the Conservative Clown Says:

the left in general and Democrats in particualr will be even less popular than they are now.

Comment by Grue State Bled —

He won't lose the case, but if the left is less popular in general, or even particular, it will still be far more popular than the right will ever be in your lifetime, or that of your kids, grandkids or great grandkids and so on. But please, don't breed. We'd like you to just die off and fade away.

  67. Bobo the Conservative Clown Says:

    Here bledsoe.

    http://www.mydd.com/story/2005/9/9/2265/71257

    You are insignificant.

  68. Marie Says:

#359, to add to your point -- Daryn Kagan from CNN often says "Democrat Ronnie Earle" when reporting on the Delay indictment. She feeds right into the partisan smear machine of the thugs. She is supposedly seeing Rush LImbaugh -- do we need any more proof that she is a skank? And a stupid one as well.

  69. Marie Says:

    Sorry - that's #59 (NOT 359)

  70. Gone At Last Says:

#37-- asking why, in the end, it always comes down to perverse ranting about sex.

This is a serious question, and it's got some serious answers. When you get down to the marrow of it, conservatives are that way because they are deeply confused fearful, and anxious about sex.

Stephen Ducat Explains It All For You in a great book called "The Wimp Factor." which deserves to be read right alongside Lakoff.

  71. Joe Says:

Ronnie Earle is a partisan and should be proud of it.

We are going after Delay because he is a Republican.

When was the last time a Democrat was ever charged with a crime?

    NEVER!

    Peace.

  72. Joe Says:

    Blue state red,

    You are full of it.

Earle did not go after Mattox because he opposed Ann Richards.

    Peace.

  73. SPERMDONOR Says:

    Ned is a TRAITOR.

He should be tarred and feathered and ridden out on a rail as an ENEMY of all that is good, and just, and ideal about America.

He and his ilk HATE America. They are all TRAITORS, and if I had my way, they'd all be kicked out of the country as subversives, liars and evil-doers.

Their type is DESTROYING our country and the GREAT ideals I have been taught to revere.

Their ilk is POISON to any healthy society.

If our society was in a healthier place, it would deal with such types swiftly, severely and harshly.

Can we bring back the guillotine?

  74. curious Says:

#63 - "The real Northeast Dilemma is how to get neanderthals like NED to move to Alabama."

Man, you must REALLY hate Alabama. How about just air-dropping them onto a remote island. I'd be happy to chip in on costs. So, do any of those old nuke test islands still glow in the dark?

  75. RepublicanTeamLeader Says:

    You libs suck
