Taking Out the Trash: Cheney Directly Involved In Leak Scandal

In today’s New York Times an anonymous source reveals that Cheney was directly involved in the strategy to discredit former ambassador Joe Wilson:

A lawyer who knows Mr. Libby’s account said the administration efforts to limit the damage from Mr. Wilson’s criticism extended as high as Mr. Cheney. This lawyer and others who spoke about the case asked that they not be identified because of grand jury secrecy rules.

On July 12, 2003, four days after his initial conversation with Ms. Miller, Mr. Libby consulted with Mr. Cheney about how to handle inquiries from journalists about the vice president’s role in sending Mr. Wilson to Africa in early 2002 to investigate reports that Iraq was trying acquire nuclear material there for its weapons program, the person said.

This is an effort by the White House to reveal more details about Cheney’s role on their own terms. The information was leaked to the New York Times on Saturday, the day when the fewest number of people read the paper. Also, it is presented in a way that makes Cheney’s involvement sound innocuous as possible.

Now, when more details about Cheney’s involvement are released by the special prosecutor or another source, the administration can dismiss it as “old news.” Remember, the first details about Karl Rove’s role were released by his own lawyer.

Nevertheless, the fact that this scandal reaches all the way to the Vice President – at a minimum – is very big news.

Fitzgerald sure runs a tight ship. I can’t imagine how if there was evidence the Cheney-yourself was involved that there haven’t been any leaks to that effect.

  2. mimalee says:

Mr. Cheney appears to me to be an evil man. I realize that I cannot judge Mr. Cheney has beimg evil that’s the reason I used the word appears. While the final judgment of Mr. Cheney does not rest with me.(thank goodness) the JESUS that the Republican Party has has Laid claimed to as being theirs alone will be his judge, and I wonder can Mr. Cheney stand fair unbias judgment. I wonder.

    We deserve worse than this?

  6. Skid says:

Get ready because the washing machine races will be going at full spin cycle from the White House via their cultist followers and the tepid MSMs. No “Democrat” label for Fitzgerald though, so expect weak excuses and strategic timeline discrepencies.

C’mon Dick, do the right thing. Resign and go f*ck yourself instead of the American citizens.

  8. Marie says:

Well, we may have seen the start of something big here.
Libby consults with Cheney on talking points in 2003, according to a White House leaker, so it becomes old news when the story develops further.
Karl Rove and Dick Cheney are evil incarnate. This shows how contrived are their plots.

  9. ShamRockNRoll says:

At least Bozo admits to being a clown.

Traitorgate has been overlooked due to Katrina, we need to get this back on everyone’s minds. It’s a HUGE deal that this treason scandal goes all the way up to the VP (if not higher).

  16. Ron says:

‘It is best not to drive and best to conserve energy’ reads better.

( http://www.blogniscient.com/uspol_tb.html ) Is the right dirt stupid thinking that we’re not going to unravel their tangled web of lies and corruption? I mean come on, Cheney’s chief of staff leaked this…of course Cheney knew. Let’s get real and hold people accountable for their actions.

  21. jan ravenhill says:

What about some inditments here! Impeachment maybe? Come on, this is much worse than cheating on your wife and lying about it!!!

  26. TWF says:

I agree with the last two posts.

If we cannot, as a nation, hold these criminals accountablle, to the fullest extent of the law, the U.S. has lost its sphere of influence, forever.

If we cannot hold these bastards (and a couple of bitches, too) accountable, then we should lose our influence.

    We are toxic as hell!

  27. Jesus Christ God of War says:

When does a crime pass impeachment and lead to hard time in prison? Or hanging?

What Dick Hung like a Whale Cheney did is NO LESS THAN TREASON!!! Queen Karl Rove also committed treason.

Granted, there’s a bit of work to do. Like having the world media record law enforcers bunny hopping these two racist greedy goons out of the MonkeyPalace, followed by a very public and very humiliating trial. Still, I wonder if there’s something worse than impeachment that could await these bozos.

  28. Jay says:

    # 24 Innocent Bystander,

I really like the way you put it: The Republican business model is construction/destruction/reconstruction. When we need to sum up the GOP approach to the U.S.’s raison d’etre to those pathecially confused fence-sitters and “undecided’s” (who are these people?)….I think that does it nicely.

As for Dick Cheney, lets face it, he’s been our president for the last five years. The man is responsible for so much pain and suffering…..loathe isn’t strong enough a word.

  29. Citizen80203 says:

It seems to be pre-emptive damage control. I agree with Judd that the leak is an inoculation for chaney.

Indictments are all that will matter here. If indictments are handed down to rove and libby, the GOP will go down in 2006. If no indictments are handed down, it will go a long way in immunization against corrupt GOP rule in 2006, even with delay et all looming.

I only hope that Fitzgerald has not been compromised in some way by the GOP. If he has, the second scenario plays out. If he has not (he has put a lot of work into this for no indictments), then the GOP is truly on the ropes in 2006.

  30. Marie says:

I think I agree with Citizen and his contingent scenarios. We all want this to happen so badly, but these guys are armor clad and we may not get what we hope.

  31. Ron says:

I could care less if the dumb idiot gets indicted, have leg irons wrapped around his ankles and sent to the hoosegow for forty years. It just doesn’t matter anymore. His ticker is in bad shape and his ticket could be cancelled anyday now. Let the poor shmuck live out his rotten miserable life. He ain’t got much time left.

  32. Grace says:

I suspected Cheny was the ring leader of this contemptible crew when a judge said he was shocked at the evidence Fitzgerald had. That is why Miller went to jail. This goes all the way to the top. Bush may stay clean, but we all know he isn’t. WHat pathetic losers these people are.

    They must be stopped now!!!!!!!!

  39. dano347 says:

Lets see what tomorrow’s punditfest produces – are they offering up Cheney to deflect from Rove? With the Vice-pres.’s recent “knee” surgery, perhaps he’s on the way out anyway, so why not “take one for the team”? If it’s because of heart problems, the president will pardon him, and he can ride off into the sunset, booty in hand. His “deferred compensation ” package, both from Halliburton and the illicit stuff we don’t yet know about, (the meetings he had with energy industry individuals shortly after taking office, for example) must be quite substantial.

  44. Innocent Bystander says:

    You are welcome Sharon Cox

There are some seriously good researchers at DU…if yu can get past the Lounge threads.

Fir thise that didn’t read it, here are a couple of grafs from the Conclusion section of the paper:

“F. Conclusions and Recommendations – To conclude, this paper asserts that Dick Cheney is directly responsible for the leaking of Valerie Plame’s name that resulted in sabotaging her CIA career and her cover company, Brewster, Jennings & Associates. CIA operations that were compromised by the leak were associated with A.Q. Khan’s network of nuclear smuggling. Khan’s network, vast enough to be dubbed by IAEA chief Mohamed El Baradei a “nuclear Walmart”, was examined here for the connections it has with terrorist organizations and state sponsors, as well as areas in which the CIA could have been following their activities.

It proves conclusively that Dick Cheney knew about A.Q. Khan’s nuclear Walmart as early as 1989, and chose not to expose the network but to profit from it, which gives him the strongest motive to blow Valerie Plame’s cover. State sponsors of terror that were proven recipients of Cheney’s nuclear proliferation include Pakistan, Libya and possibly Iran. The links between Khan and Cheney involved suppliers from other countries designed to blur the source of the components, but research concludes individuals affiliated with collaborative companies such as Cognis and their investor Goldman Sachs would be the most obvious links in the chain. Such links also exist in the case of Donald Rumsfeld profiting through ABB’s $200 million sale of nuclear equipment to North Korea, which would prove that Halliburton profited from this example of nuclear proliferation as well.”

  45. caged says:

If Cheney were to be indicted and prosecuted
(big “if”) every penny he has made from his scheming corrupt deals, here and offshore, should be poured back into the US Treasury. We would probably have a surplus!

Cheney Directly Involved In Leak Scandal

  50. Sharon Cox says:

Nancy very good points but I have some I like better. All their assets returned to the treasury and to be paid to all the veterans and their famalies. Next they all have to serve life terms out in the desert, living in tent’s and eating bad balogni sandwiches with that tough sheriff. Can’t remember if it’s Arizona or Nevada. No matter. Now that would work for justice…What do you think.? One more reason not to have capital punishment. How can the evil ones repent and truly pay for their crimes………Blessings

  51. CAT says:

Terror by definition is an emotion of being left afraid and helpless from some unknown entity. Once you know where the source of the terror is coming from it becomes less a terror and more of a challenge.

This house of cards built by the Bush Family and extending to encompass many of the wealthiest people in our country including Chaney, is a house that will not stand up as long as we are willing to fight for our country.

The law will prevail and Bush, Chaney and all the rest will have their judgment day soon. Our wheels of justice move slowly at times but they always move.

Bush and Chaney believe they are untouchable. They believe they own the justice system. Tom DeLay thought that and look at him now.

We must continue to investigate the many different corrupt
deals going on in the House, the administration and the pentagon.

Someday soon the gavel will crack down and these neocon criminals will face their day in court.

  52. CAT says:

  55. patriot says:

Sorry to post the same thing more than once, but I thought this idea was very important……………
The important thing to remember re: election 2008 is that the votes will NOT be counted as things stand now. Touch-screen vote-stealing machines have been proliferated throughout America by rabid Republican-owned corporations that have been proven to be designed for untraceable vote theft. Worse than that, the central tabulator machines — those that add up the local numbers for county-wide totals — have also been outed as being designed for untraceable count manipulation (by a “deep-throat” management insider, among others http://www.ecotalk.org/VotingSecurity.htm ).

Read about this in your local or regional newspaper yet?

See it on the corporate media whore networks yet?

There is only one answer: PAPER BALLOTS, HAND COUNTED.

I do NOT apologize for shouting. Please understand this issue in full. Go to http://www.blackboxvoting.org and http://www.ecotalk.org/VotingSecurity.htm#Educate&Agitate to get the particulars on what’s what, and what you can do.

The next time you hear a converted Republican tell you that he’s so mad that he’ll “vote them (the Repugs) out,” tell him just as fast “no you won’t,” and tell him why. I remember many *sshole Repubs telling me that election theft was a sore loser tinhat story — when election theft went their way. Now that it’s their vote being stolen, they are vulnerable to waking up. Give it a try.

    Good luck.

  56. Benjamin says:

They who do not read news or history are doomed to repeat it…”there is no cover up, and I am not a crook!” Oh, my, that occurred during the last of his five Vietnam era defermands! How rapidly we all forget, care of MSM spin.

Still, if he does a few months in a Federally Funded Pee Wee’s Playhouse for naughty boys, what justice is there when this lout can retire to one of a half-dozen luxurious digs placed strategically to isolate him from swarms of his corporate victims while his sleazeball wife pens more lesbian pot-boilers?

Hey Folks, to borrow a phrase from Scowlin Disk’s ostensible boss, “FEMA? Come on folks, FEMA!!! You’d think it was a Federal Program or sumthin!”

    Hi Marie-

I suspect that the fear of anthrax is more of a motivator than a Pulitzer….

  60. Marie says:

#45 IB, I have read the full report from DU and I am still reeling from the interconnections described therein. Admittedly, it is not proven, but the evidence and documentation so far is incredibly incriminating and explains much.
The good winning in the end only happens in the movies, but I sure am hoping for a Hollywood finish to this sordid tale.

  61. Gambit46 says:

When I think about our country, how we have thrown away our Constitution, turned our backs against those who needed our help, forced our industrial-military complex down the throats of everyone living in the Third World, promoted racism and militarism throughout the world, then I remember the shortest verst in the Bible: Jesus wept.

I weep for my country. We are living through a fierce storm spawned by greed and lies. We are fighting to keep the candle lit. Fight on, Fight on, Fight on.
We must not lose. Our grandchildren are counting on us now.

If we cannot even count our votes correctly, what can we do? We must return to an age when the American People could expect to have their votes counted, and expect to pick their own Leaders. Any person or group who interferes with that process deserves capital punishment, because they are the worst of all traitors.

    Gambit46

  62. Innocent Bystander says:

    Marie @ 62

Alas, this is no Hollywood-type tale. It’s very complicated and nuanced. But this is, of course, their modus operandi….all nicely buried in layer after layer of coporate shell’s and legal obfuscation. But the facts are Cheney and Rumsfield were in charge of these companies when these transactions went down. They are accountable.

I’d love to see Michael Moore do a documentary that lays this all out…

  63. Marie says:

So would I, but unless there is a personnel change in the White House and Congress, any movie made by MM will be fodder for their liars and spinmeisters.
