Source to Stephanopoulos: President Bush Directly Involved In Leak Scandal»

Near the end of a round table discussion on ABC’s This Week, George Stephanopoulos dropped this bomb:

Definitely a political problem but I wonder, George Will, do you think it’s a manageable one for the White House especially if we don’t know whether Fitzgerald is going to write a report or have indictments but if he is able to show as a source close to this told me this week, that President Bush and Vice President Cheney were actually involved in some of these discussions.

This would explain why Bush spent more than an hour answering questions from special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald. It would also fundamentally change the dynamics of the scandal. President Bush could no longer claim he was merely a bystander who wants to “get to the bottom of it.” As Stephanopoulos notes, if Bush played a direct role it could make this scandal completely unmanageable.

    Wow, this certainly is big! Like I’ve said before, I didn’t think our government could any less incompetent, but now we hear that even Bush is involved in this mess.

    I was worried about Bush pardoning DeLay and Frist, but with this new revelation I’m beginning to relax a bit on that.

    If Bush isn’t actually impeached for this, but punished in some other way, I sure hope Bush can’t pardon himself! As Bruce Gottlieb stated in his Slate.com article:

    Can the president really pardon himself? No one knows the answer. The Constitution says that the president “shall have the power to grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States, except in cases of impeachment.” This sentence, like many in the Constitution, can reasonably be interpreted in several ways. And since no court has ruled on this issue–because no president has ever tried to pardon himself–it remains an open question.”

    However, a search on About.com gives a different conclusion:

    “The “constitutional challenges” would come primarily from the power of U.S. presidents to grant pardons under Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution, which states in part, “and he [the president] shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.”

    In other words, under this Article, a sitting president can grant him or herself a pardon. The Founding Fathers intended this in order to prevent the Executive Branch (the president) from coming under the direct control and influence of the Judiciary Branch (the courts).”

    I guess I’m jumping way ahead here when I still have no idea how Bush will even be punished, let aloe IF he’ll punished, or even if he’ll be charged with anything.

    I’m waiting for the Republican chorus to start singing that we don’t need no stinking independent special prosecutor to inspect Bush and Cheney’s involvement — why, who could do a better job than Alberto ‘VO-5′ Gonzales, the nation’s top cop?

    The cliche is that grand juries will indict a ham sandwich; but what about someone with the intellect of a ham sandwich? (On white toast, of course.)

    DeLay, Rove, Scooter, and now Dick and Dubya, too. Karmic payback is fierce mutha– (Shut your mouth!) But I’m talkin’ about America gettin’ shafted!

    I think it has been very clear for a long time that both Bush and Cheney are ‘hands on’ managers when it comes to their top aides. Libby and Rove report DIRECTLY to Cheney and Bush respectfully. I would seriously doubt Libby and/or Rove would act on their own with such a serious matter. We all know why they would want to discredit Wilson and we also know that this team of politicians are probably ‘the masters’ of dirty tricks politics. The fact that Bush and Cheney would be involved does not surprise this American at all. Soon the trashing of Fitzgerald will begin by the spin machine.

    Bush’s top guy and Cheney’s top guy are in the hotseat… is it any surprise the fire’s rising? With Rove and Libby under investigation, how could Puppet-Master and Charley McCarthy NOT be involved?

    I wish that argument would fly in a legal setting. If indictments do come down (or go up), it’s going to be a very long and twisty road. And of course neither Bush nor Cheney will ever EVER feel any actual effects of the legal system.

    But for now, here’s hoping “If The Shoe” Fitz can bring this baby in for a landing.

    So, what. There is NO WAY this congress will impeach the president. Bush can rob the bank at high noon and the cops guarding it would not stop him or arrest him. They then would swear he never was there.

    That is the USA today. Clinton get worked over for whitewater and a blow job, and Bush can steal, start an illegal war and authorize torture and the killing of civilian and journalists and the condamination of Iraq with depleteted uranium and what happends - NOTHING, NOTHING and 40% of the public thinks he is doing a GOOD job.

    This country is ethically and morally bankrupt.

    This is not incompetence. It is dishonesty, treason and corruption to the highest degree. They should have both been impeached for crimes against humanity when they first took the offices they stole.

    I agree, Dan, that they both may be involved: while Bush is kept out of the loop (allegedly)on so many things, he DOES remain in very close consult with Rove, who is, after all, the man who directs him. Cheney is likely the one in control in his office, but Libby is without a doubt, in close, daily contact. I also expect a trashing of Fitzgerald, (Republican notwithstanding) but that possibility might explain in part Fitz’ very tight seal on the case.

    don’t know if anyone will see this, but does anyone know if there have ever been any provisions made, i.e. in the Constitution or subsequent laws, that would enable a ’special election’? i know that parliamentary systems allow ‘no confidence’ votes, but if this thing knocks out both bush & cheney, hastert becomes president, appoints a vp (subject to senate confirmation? yes? no?)and they would just serve out the rest of the term?

    And hastert has his own Turkish/Armenian problems, doesn’t he?

    As an outsider I am used to having a more progressive and objective news media both in TV and Paper.
    It has always been known that that Bush and Cheney have been involved from the outset.

    Cheney gave the info to Bush and told him that they would have to turn this story around; with Bush’s agreement Rove and Libby were told to go to work.

    Bolton is also involved Plames name is on the list of the 34 names not supplied to the confirmation hearing, it is interesting to see that the new UN ambassador visited Plame for a quite talk in jail.

    You people have only got one problem and that is the Whitehouse Mafia will not allow special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald to bring charges against Bush or Cheney. Rove and Libby might fall on their sword but I won’t hold my breath.

    Your current attorney general who was bush’s counsel is also clearly implicated if not at the beginning he was defiantly at the end in allowing 12hrs to elapse for clean-up.

    Patrick Fitzgerald loves the charge of Purgery and several people have committed this I hope he has the guts to start the process to rid America of some of the worst criminals in the history of the country. I wonder?

    This WILL go somewhere. Here we have Delay indicted on some flimsy conspiracy charges. I am sure Fitzgerald has a lot more evidence for indictments then the prosecuter in Delay’s case. I expect some indictments for conspiracy, obstruction of justice and perjury for Libby, Rove and other WHIG members.

    Unclear if Bush and Cheney get indictments but Fitgerald’s report will probably have something in it that Bush and Cheney are involved.

    Heretofore, everyone’s been parroting the line that there’s no way Dems can retake the House and Senate in 2006.

    But why is that?

    Leaving aside the Diebold issue… what would it take for Dems to retake Congress in 2006 — thus enabling impeachment?

    If this goes as other big scandal news stories have gone, Stephanopolous will be issuing a retraction shortly… One of his details will be off (say his source wasn’t actually a first-order witness), but the rest of the story was essentially correct, and Steph will be pilloried as a liar, and the story will die.

    I agree with those that have said that they suspected Bush and Cheney were involved all along in the Plame leak. Of course they knew, but there are too many layers between the POTUS and the Veep for them to get into trouble. This will further weaken them politically though, and that is the good thing for those of us opposed to their fascist agenda.

    Just watch how quickly the mainstream media drops Stephanopolous’ comment though. Like the Downing St. memo, this will be buried faster than a dog bone in the backyard. hope I’m wrong about that.

The SCOTUS has nothing to do with the impeachment process and impeachment doesn’t always lead to removal from office.     While this revolutiongives pause for hope. I have to say that I can see nothing but lies, spins, and finger pointing to get out of this psoition. When all is said, I doubt anything will come of this.

    Part of the problem is the lack of a strong democratic interest pushing the subject. The same thing happened with the Downing Street Memo, remember we thoght we had him then as well, not one democrat pushed for further investigation, so with time it died. To get attention on this possibility that Chimpus was involved, someone on the democrat team needs to make the case and push for a special prosecutor. But, that’s not going to happen because the democrats have abondon their left of center base in favor of the middle of the road moderates. Its comfortable there because there are no expectations and nothing happens in slow motion. Thank God for Move-On and ThinkProgress or the left would have no voice at all.

    The important thing to remember re: election 2008 is that the votes will NOT be counted as things stand now.     They would impeach him only if they thought that was the politically expedient thing to do. Whihc means only if a large majority of the populace really demanded it–not just “wanted” it, but “demanded” it.

    That seems very unlikely to me. My best result scenario is that this scandal encompasess both Bush and Cheney, the public outcry is large but not large enough to force Congress to impeach, and the next election(s) throw a bunch of the lunatics out.

    That would just leave us with the problem of finding enough Democrats with good ideas and spines for the change to make a real positive difference.

    This country is in SO much trouble.

Because of precedent established with Kenneth Starr, information told by White House staff to White House counsel may be admissable evidence.     George Bush has appealled to historic values that originated in four thousand year old Biblical writings and in Greece twenty five hundred years ago. The two are not compatable. Christianity as taught today does not reflect the Biblical teachings of Christ. Christ taught that as a member of a band brothers one should be willing to sacrafice his life to oppose an occupying force. The Greeks unabashedly taught that “democracy” included a slave class as well as a small group of people who were the ruling class.

    Not everyone has to know the history and the philosophies being talked about to act in your own best interests. Here is what I suggest you do to be represented more honestly, and fairly. VOTE FOR PEOPLE WHO YOU KNOW OR AT LEAST FROM YOUR OWN SOCIAL CLASS. If you do that you do not need to get your information from TV you get it from your friends and neighbours. In line with what I have already suggested: don’t vote for anyone who has or has access to a million dollars.

    I maintain we have no hard evidence of what the rest of the country is thinking. It would be interesting to get out there and talk to them. We might find that they are as disgusted and fed up as we are, but are more demoralized, and so don’t vote.

    What amazes me is that the die hard rEpublicans still think that bUsh is a good and righteous president - which is very disturbing in of itself. The stupidity of the rEpublican voter is ridiculous, when to anyone with even half a brain it’s so apparent that corruption is rampant within this administration - and that they cannot see it - truly astonishing.
