“I know of nothing in Harriet Miers’ background that would qualify her for an appointment to the Supreme Court,” says Roger Pilon, director of Cato’s Center for Constitutional Studies.
I would like to thank TP for not making us suffer through Sitemeter and blogads. I’m just about done with Kos and Huffpo. I have DSL and it still sucks.
I think junior has consistently shown from the beginning that anyone they appoint to any position doesn’t need experience or credentials. He’s totally incompetent, so it kind of follows that he would select the same. ‘Brilliant’… ya sure, ya betcha. If he had any of his brain left, he’d take it out & play with it.
Junior didn’t have any decent credentials or experience in 2000, either. Texas governors spend maybe two months out of the year in the office. Ten months of paid vacation. Georgie must miss that dreadfully.
Not enough grease in the world for me Zookeeper, but I agree. This nomination is a Bush sympathizer and a deliberate “shield” attempt for BushCo in reference to upcoming trials and legal action against them. The Dems and MSMs taking this as a legitimate nomination rather than the sham that it is is pathetic.
Remember how the conservative base hates all justices but thomas and scalia. Regardless if they were appointed by a republican they paint them all as “liberal” activist judges. I believe this is directed at the base to fill up their bellies with hate for years to come, to give them the gay/fetus flag to gather around. It also gives the administration some cover in the middle if “badder things happen” in the coming months. Bush will be bashed on the right for a few weeks/months but his supreme court appointments will be surgically separated from the GOP as has previous GOP “liberal activist” judges. All hail the chief, death to judges mantra will ensure the necessary hate to keep the red meat base in line for 2008. At the same time an inoculation from the charge of “these extremist GOP crazies†may help prevent a total GOP bleed out for 2006.
Of course, the above will be so very wrong if these appointments are indeed “GOP sleepers†grown from thomas/scalia stem cells.
It’s official: At this point, Bush doesn’t care if the court is pro-life, pro-business, pro-Christian or even modestly conservative-friendly. All he wants is a Supreme Court that is reliably pro-George-Bush should pending indictments and ongoing investigations lead to the Oval Office. He’d nominate his brother Marvin if he thought he could get away with it.
The only draw back is that Supreme Court Justices tend to become independent as time goes by and Bush will be long gone. I think the real agenda here is property rights and a check on legislation for any future progrogressive majority. Of course, I’m sure a little personal loyalty could come in handy if this puss filled bag of an administration bursts with criminal charges. But we all know that beyond indictments, there will be no trials within the current statis quo, much less a supreme court ruling on pardons.
The nomination of Harriet Miers as the replacement for Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor has united liberals and conservatives in ways few thought possible. Democrats fear she is a stealth arch-conservative. But it is Republicans fellow-travelers like Michelle Malkin, Bill Kristol and David Frum who seem most horrified. They are simply astounded that Bush confirmed Americans’ worst fears that he values cronyism over qualification.
#6 Zookeeper: I think you have it ‘right on’. (I knew a ‘zookeeper’ once, when I asked her why they called her ‘zookeeper’ she answered: “Because I have 5 kids!”..lolol.) Just ask yourself, would Miers vote to impeach bushie?….I think NOT.
Miers isn’t a judge, but neither were other judges. Thing is, she doesn’t have the “chops” to be a Supreme Court judge. The right is furious over this, too: They know that after Brown and all of the other plums the Boy King has given a way this is the most obvious. The game is afoot with this appointment.
Bush just admitted he’s all about big business, shielding himself from investigation, and rewarding the party faithful with this pick.
I think the most important question they could ask her , would be “If any administration members come before the Supreme Court, would you recuse yourself?”
She wouldn’t. There is talk of the Republicans blocking her, too. Here is what others have been saying, and I agree. The phenomenon will be called the Rob Schneider Effect (From now on the RSE).
Everybody knows who Rob Schneider is, right? He worked on SNL, has been in a few low-brow comedies, and is a bit actor in almost all of the Adam Sandler movies. That last part is the most important. Nobody would accuse Sandler of being a skilled, deep actor(well, pre-Spanglish and Punch Drunk Love, but it is a stretch.) Anyhow, if you look at when Schneider released movies you’ll see that a Sandler movie was in the oven or running at the same time. The real reason: Schneider makes Sandler look good. Schneider is the poor man’s Sandler. So, after Miers gets dominated and voted down the Republicans bring in Wonder Boy or Wonder Girl. Sure, its not what the Democrats would love, but Miers just made the terrible look like the poor, and the poor look pretty darn good. Also, this phenomen/strategy can be known as the horse-faced girlfriend tactic (H-FGFT)
There is nothing in Bush’s record that qualified him for the Presidency. Come on, y’all knew he wasn’t very bright when you voted for him. Now the red team is all surprised to find out what those of us in the reality-based world have known for years: Bush is an idiot. Shocking!
#6 Zookeeper, I buy your point about Harriet greasing the skids. by ceding a bipartisan defeat of his nominee, the president will seem as if he’s being a team player and have an opportunity to play up some aw shucks faux contrition to his base.

October 3rd, 2005 at 1:25 pm“Cato Institute Slams Miers”…Well, at least some conservatives, how ever few, still have an iota of sense.
October 3rd, 2005 at 1:27 pmWell, she has no experience:

Good job, George. Not.
If ever a pResident sucked hard, King George is it! :-(
October 3rd, 2005 at 1:29 pmStupid! Just plain stupid!
October 3rd, 2005 at 1:31 pmMaybe Georgie has a real nutcase waiting in the wings, and he’s being a real dick throwing Harriet Miers out there to grease the skids.
Maybe he’s thinking that after this stunt one of his crazy appointees who’s actually been a judge will be looking just right.
Maybe he’s just trying to throw the dogs off Scooter Libby and Karl Rove.
Maybe I’m giving the guy too much credit?
October 3rd, 2005 at 1:39 pmShe’s probably only one of a handful willing to take it deep for Bush, considering his unpopularity.
