Cheney: Miers is Just Like Scalia and Thomas

Many on the right are complaining that Harriet Miers is not sufficiently ideological. But Vice President Cheney, for his part, is trying to sell Miers as another Scalia or Thomas. Here is Cheney today on Sean Hannity’s radio show:

HANNITY: So in that sense, the President’s promise, you believe, has been fulfilled, and that is that she fits the mold of a Scalia and a Thomas?

CHENEY: I do.

Cheney added that Bush didn’t pick Myers to avoid controversy: “He’s not a President who avoids a fight — he likes a good fight.”

  1. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

This is what Cheney has been reduced to? Bush is in more trouble than I realized.

  2. progressive and proud Says:

He loves a good fight, a bad fight and a bourbon...keep the cocktails coming.

  3. Ugh Says:

“He’s not a President who avoids a fight — he likes a good fight.”

    Which, I guess, explains Iraq.

  4. Marie Says:

Yeah, he likes a good fight all right - we're all witness to that!
Her main qualification is that she will claim attorney-client privilege against very question from the Senators.

  5. Rotwang Says:

Actually, she's about the same height as Scalia, and she looks a lot like Helen Thomas. Maybe that's what Crashcart was thinking.

  6. Skid Says:

Bush likes a good fight, but chooses to have others fight it for him. What jackasses BushCo are.

  7. Zookeeper Says:

Hello? Democrats? The ones who think Harriet would be A-okay? I don't know about you, but I believe Cheney on this one. Anybody home?

  8. Jon Says:

Then again, President Bush called Miers "a pit bull in size 6 shoes."

  9. Zookeeper Says:

Don't you love how Hannity asks questions? Have the answer neatly tied up in the question, only monosyllables required for answers. Hannity gets to talk the most. Ugh.

  10. They Lie Says:

Don't progressives know by now that every word these people say is a lie, including 'the' and 'and'.

They are in the business of controlling public opinion, so let's mount our own attack on her candidacy not just play back from the right wing liars.

  11. Marie Says:

Bush says he "knows her heart" -- what stupid talk falls out of his mouth.
Is this like seeing into the "soul" of Vladimir Putin?
Who the hell cares what he sees in his reveries -- or are they DTs -- the adjectives he uses to describe his people are irrelevant -- Roberts is a "gentleman" foreign dignitaries are "a nice guy" "he can take a joke"
I don't think anyone is allowed to tell him he is so stupid!!

  12. Marie Says:

Yeah, Cheney, and Saddam has reconstituted his WMDs too.
    You have no credibility, dick.

  13. Pablo in Mexico Says:

This woman is worse than Scalia and Thomas. She was appointed by Bush to SCOTUS to make sure, when his term is over, that none of his personal papers end up being public.

She will honor his request too.

  14. LP Says:

    Which, I guess, explains Iraq.
    that made me laugh

  16. blindprogressive Says:

I didn't think Bush and his buddies liked the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell Policy". However it sure seems to be their MO for the judicial nomination process. I think conservatives are being coy on this.

    NED,

The average progressive is aware of more truths daily, than you'll ever realize in your entire miserable little existence... The fact is this administration is filled with moronic cronies of the PNAC NeoCon Fascist conspiracy. They never cared about you, only themselves. And you were too stupid, self absorbed and insane to ever realize it... You're a pathetic excuse for an american you selfish traitor!

  18. CV Says:

Don't bother with her ideology or (lack of) record. None of that means squat. Her biggest attribute is her loyalty to the thug in chief. Everyone that he puts up is someone that has done something for him, the dirtier the job, the sweeter the plum. Bolton led the GOP Rioters in Tallahasse in 2000, Rogers was part of that action too. Miers? Scrub his National Guard records? Hide his coke bust? We may never find out.
Leave the ideological angle to the Cons, the more they attack her for not being conservative enough, the more Dick and Shrub have to say "yes she is". Most of the electorate are fed up with hard-right ideologs. The tack that may actually work is to point up the cronyism angle. We've had clear demonstrations of how incompetant cronys are dangerous (brownie) in important positions, the Supreme Court is too crucial to fluff.
(when the Bushies stand trial, how many judges will have to recuse themselves?)
Do you think any Democrats are going to stir themselves to resist the packing job?
    I'm not holding my breath.

  19. Priscilla Says:

Bush likes a good fight? Then why were the audiences for his campaign and Social Security "dialogues" so selectively chosen? The audiences were filled with people who agreed with him.

  20. CV Says:

    Ignore the troll
MoveOn has put out a call for distributed research on Miers. If you have any info or access to research tools:

  21. Montague Says:

Bush likes a good fight? Then where was he when it was time to enlist and go to Viet Nam?

The idiot doesn't want a fight, he's tired and hungover, you can see it in all the photos. He wants to go home to the ranchette.

  22. CV Says:

Bush likes a good fight. HA! Shrub doesn't have the balls to face Cindy Sheehan not to mention anyone his own size.

  23. David B Says:

I don't think Cheney is getting enough oxygen to his brain. Once again he is completely out of step with what most others are saying. This guy wrote the book on spin.

  24. cynical ex-hippie Says:

NED, you were teasing us about choosing the next supreme court justice?

  25. Xpatriated Texan Says:

Cheney probably thought he was talking about Scooter. President Bush has never been in a fight, much less enjoyed it.

If Roberts was "the best we could expect" from a Bush White House, then this has to rank up there with serving pork chops at the Iraeli-Palestinian peace talks.

  26. Patrice Says:

    Go f**k yourself, Mr. Cheney.

  27. Ryan Neat Says:

Just like Scalia and Thomas? You mean inconsistent, irrational, selfish, hypocritical and Partisan? Wow, she is a friend of Bush's...

  28. big dave from queens Says:

Still more research to be done but if we are going to filibuster this pick, so far it's the fact that the law firm she headed had to pay an 8 million dollar fine for ethical irregularities, she had to resign from the Texas Lottery Commission, and Cheney's comments.

Again, the reason why conservatives choose stealth judges with little or no record is because a conservative judge's record is indefensible. If she answers questions honestly, she'll most likely be viewed as extreme. If she plays evade and duck, then evading + ducking Plus the 8 million dollar fine gives us the right to filibuster. (Plus Bush will have a Barooka (willy wonka girl) temper tantrum since she's his pitbull)

  29. Sam Says:

With all the angst, I've decide to create my own list of potential candidates for the job. I tend to like my choices.

so off topic it's not even on the same url, but i saw an advanced screening of "good night and good luck," george clooney's film about edward r. murrow vs. joe mccarthy. brilliant. abso-f*cking-lutely brilliant. i can't recommend it enough. incredibly relevant to today's political scene. go see it. my review of it here.

    Duh!

  33. Sharon Cox Says:

I'm not even going to waste my time wrighting senators on this one, put her in and then impeach the rest of them. She's getting her due for all the sins shes helped cover up. Just like Roberts, except he's smarter.Fool them all and go along with their dog and poney shows.....Blessings

  34. Rotwang Says:

She's a born-again, evangelical Christian. If someone (preferably Spencer Tracy) can get her to say "I believe in the literal truth of the Bible" at the confirmation hearings, I think even Orrin Hatch will do a spit-take.

  35. Patriot Says:

I think what Cheney meant was that she looked like a short, black, pasta eatin' WOP (Oh my God! Did I say that out loud?!).

  36. Patriot Says:

    From E.L. Doctorow:

“But this president does not know what death is. He hasn’t the mind for it. You see him joking with the press, peering under the table for the WMDs he can’t seem to find, you see him at rallies strutting up to the stage in shirt sleeves to the roar of the carefully screened crowd, smiling and waving, triumphal, a he-man. He does not mourn. He doesn’t understand why he should mourn. He is satisfied during the course of a speech written for him to look solemn for a moment and speak of the brave young Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.”

Bush does not like to fight.

  37. brian Says:

Bush will definitely have to fight for this woman who only has experience defending Bush from what must be an endless stream of lawsuits based on his shady and torrid background.

  38. DeLay Meet Bubba Says:

Just wait till you hear what else is happening tomorrow. Trolls won't dare show their pointy little heads. GOP ist kaput!

  39. Sharon Cox Says:

Let's see so far we have a extreme right wing fundamentalist christian, female, unmarried, no children, Bush loyalist, able to cover lies, where the bodies are buried, if any, knows the law and how to get around it. Not far enough right or to far right for some of the Bush base, no paper trail. Hmmmmmmm. Give me a pagen any day. Thank you very much. Still think shes just getting paid back and or used to start a fight. Frankly I'm not buying it....Blessings

  40. noway Says:

im sure this (re: stuff that went on during Miers' tenure at the Texas Lotto) has been posted/discussed somewhere, but thought it deserved a 2nd look... read on:

"""""Mr. Littwin was fired five months later, with the commission saying it had "lost confidence in him."

He sued Gtech, contending that his dismissal was retaliation for seeking to expose improper campaign contributions by Gtech to Texas lawmakers and the commission's failure to hold Gtech to its contract. During the suit, his lawyers deposed Mr. Barnes, who described under oath what he later said was his effort to get Mr. Bush into the National Guard to avoid service in Vietnam.

Mr. Littwin's lawyers suggested that Mr. Barnes's lottery contract with Gtech was a quid pro quo for Mr. Barnes's silence about the National Guard matter. Mr. Littwin and Gtech later settled for $300,000, and he agreed not to discuss the case."""""

    Quid pro quo Agent Starling.

Looks like Bush's "pit bull in a size 6" used her influence via Bush to buy off/shut up Barnes from divulging info abt his keeping Bush out of 'Nam.
    ver-r-r-r-r-r-r-y interesting-g-g-g-g.

  41. Borgia Says:

A bit paradoxical that someone who's never struggled a day in his life would like a good fight.

  42. Borgia Says:

Oh and as for that Medusa all too thinly veneered with Jezebel allure, she's stinks of a fidelis ad urnam yes-man (or woman?) who would overturn brown vs board if bushie asked her...this court is off to the races sprinting towards the right.

  43. Jamaica Says:

Serious pay off for the spinster fan.

    Its a catch-22.
I don't think we should knuckle under & allow this to go through with someone who is incompetent & clearly a crony appointment with a history of sanitizing the Bush toilet. That reinforces "go along to get along" mainstream Dems.

Having said that, complete in-yer-face doesn't quite cut it either. Its a "kinda win--win big" coup for the NeoCONs.

A yes-person with no solid convictions of her own besides being a good foot soldier for "the most brilliant man she's ever met."
vs a big punch back to re-solidify his base on the right. They would feel empowered if they had "evidence" that they turned him around in an alternate nomination.

Yet Miers doesn't look that rock solid. I don't think she can go til 80.

  44. Jamaica Says:

What I am getting at in #46 -

Is that we better work on principle because this game is lost either way as far as court appointments.

It is game-set-match on this justice position.
Comes down to how bad & how competent.

& whether liberals & progressives can work on principle.

  45. Morgaine Swann Says:

He loves a fight as long as HE doesn't have to fight it.

  46. Jennty Says:

What I find more interesting on this appointment was that Fristy was trying to get this over and done with lickety split, he said yesterday he wanted her hearings done by the end of next month. That really set off my trip wire. Woah there nelly. We know NOTHING about this person. It's going to take MONTHS just to try to drag any kind of data out of the WH on her activities, which in the end the Senate won't get because they will claim Attourney Client privledge.

IMO this is total cronyism and payback for her work on cleaning up Duhbuhyas Guard record and keeping the Coke bust out of the records.

  47. Sharon Cox Says:

Jennty, maybe Fritzy is in a hurry cause he know's he is about to be charged with something. Ya think.?.He may be thinking leave nothing to chance in the Bush dog and pony show...Blessings

  48. Hank Says:

Miers is an Evangelical Christian. I think we can pretty well guess where she is going to come down on all future contriversies.

  49. Marie Says:

GWB is a coward. He speaks with pugnacious braggadocio, he walks with a swagger, but he surrounds himself with sycophants who will defend him and who will protect him. He likes to talk the talk and walk the walk of a "fighter" but he is a phony, a fake, a craven coward. Cheney, a bald-faced liar, is right there with him.

  50. Bob the Niihilist Says:

In another comment board a person initialed GJ insists this Miers is a diversion. we all know the Senate won't approve her and the Demos will have cashed in their chips on her, happy to have actually been of use.

BUT then comes along the next candidate Earle Adolf Killemall who believes in death sentence for crying babies etc. How can the Demos block another appointment?

    Answer: They can't.

It's enough to make me want to congressional cafeteria and dump anthrax in the daily special.

  51. Mr. Evil Says:

    Lying, lying liars,
    This is just the pits,
    He picked Harriet Miers,
    'Cause he likes her tits!

  52. Hunter Morrow Says:

This is definately not the "real thing."
The Rs just want us to blow the wad on Miers and then slip in somebody, who while terrible, looks like a savant compared to Miers. Its like during the revolutionary war where one side would strafe the fort and make the guys waste their powder, then BAMM!

  53. Sharon Cox Says:

All of this is just junk produced by the Bush co. administration to keep us busy while they force through their ajenda to cut it. drill it and kill it. That's all our safety net's in enviroment and domestic policies. Their constant is to take away our rights, distroy our wilderness and parks, support the war effort and all the Mfg. that goes with it and turn our country into a bigger industrial complex, dictated to, not for the people. It's working to. While they fill our air way's with crap they empty our pocket's and feed the rich. Never mind they are polluting us beyond repair and were sold out to China......I'm sick of it and not going to vote for any of my own that have rolled over either. Had enough..Can't win this latest judge nominee and maybe we should just act stupid for a bit to see how all this shakes out. Let the right wing haggle and act like we don't care. In the mean time we need to clean up our own party, get some fighters in there and shoot for 2006 take back......Blessings

They party that brings us that fat ass LimpButt shouldn't call anyone else 'squishy'. Every time you use that term it conjures up images of the stupid fat people (like you) who are republican. You really have to find at least an accurate term, since you've clearly shown you can't find anything else accurate to say Mighty Windbag...

  57. Keith H. Says:

Dickey's just trying to prop Georgie back up a little.
I mean, whatever junior's doin', it aint helpin' his inability to put together a complete and coherent sentence. Have you heard him try to speak if he's not reading the telepromter lately? Dude's goin' from bad to worse. It's fu*kin' comedy! Really!
So, the 'he likes a good fight' comment is just an effort to hopefully make him seem like anything but the absolute idiot that he is. You know, the 'he may be a meathead, but he's a tough guy' image. Somehow, an old blue-hair crashin' his bike while choking on a pretzle doesn't really come across as an ass-kicker.
Dickey's one lightning storm away from meeting his uncle satan anyway, hee hee. I'm stockin' up for the party now!

  58. Marie Says:

Keith, we had to turn on the Press Conf. this morning at work because we didn't want to miss the comedy show of Bush talking without a script.
Unfortunately the line from Julius Caesar fits here, regarding Cheney: The evil men do lives on after them; the good is interred with their bones.

  59. CV Says:

#53 Bob, If they block this foul piece, they will have precedent for blocking the next piece of crony garbage, If they had stirred themselves over Roberts, they wouldn't have any problem deflecting Miers.
There IS an element of distraction here, but Miers would do their bidding if selected.
And that crack about the Cafeteria? I'd be careful to walk in well lit places if I were you. No sense of humor @ 1600 Pennsylvania Ave (they posted snipers on the roof and linebackers with baseball bats all over the lawn when Cindy came to the WhiteHouse gate last week. They are scared shitless.)

What about jokes about, let's see... people trapped in burning buildings!!! You go, Bob, you're on a roll!!!!!!

Let's look at this another way: "....we have an extreme left wing humanist/atheist, female, unmarried, has had lots of abortions, lefty loyalist, able to cover spin, knows the law and how to get around it."

You're right - that does look like the candidate "regressives" could support!!

  65. Hunter Morrow Says:

Get real, MA. Bush dropped the ball on this appointment, and no, chugging Kool-Aid and then rambling on about some mythical abortion having "Communist" doesn't make Miers any better. She reeks from involvement with Bush scandals and is part of Bush's team so will not be impartial if Bush or his buddies are brought to the Supreme Court on appeals. Not only that she has almost no experience with constitutional law, and has never been a judge. Even far-right nutjobs like Malkin know that scores of more qualified, even-tempered, and moderate candidates got boned by this crony/patronage pick.

  66. mighty aphrodite Says:

Sounds a little bit like the ol' "LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT"

  67. SpudgeBoy Says:

Of course you guys did see the historical image from today's New York Times and other newpapers.?

The image that went out today with an AP story was an image dated August 6th 2001. In the picture is Miers, leaning over discussing some paperwork with Bushie at his Crawford Ranch.

August 6th 2001 is of course the date that GW was handed the oh so famous "Bin Laden determined to attack inside US" Presidential Daily Briefing.

The caption to todays photo was "Harriet Miers discusses the presidents daily briefing" with the date of the photo being August 6th 2001.

What this all means is that even old Harriet was too dumb to say "Hey George, should we read this PDB thingy?"

Which GW responded to with "No, we got a lot of hard work to do. Now go get the chainsaw"

  68. LINDA SPYCHALSKI Says:

Miers is a former President of Locke, Purnell, Rain & Harrell and former chairwoman of the Texas Lottery Commission. Locke, Purnell, Rain & Harrell have given at least $65,000 to Bush campaigns and are major backers of tort reform.

GUESS WHO JUST CONTRIBUTED TO DELAYS DEFENSE? YOU GOT IT,,,LOCKE,PURNELL,RAIN & HARRELL..GUESS WE CAN FIGURE THIS OUT PRETTY EASY HUH?

Was Harriet Miers the one who scoured and scrubbed the President's National Guard record?
They paid "hard-nosed Dallas lawyer named Harriet Miers" $19,000 to review the records. According to Newsweek, one result of her work was to deflect charges that former Texas House Speaker Ben Barnes helped Bush get into the Texas Air National Guard despite low qualifications and a long waiting list. Barnes was later forced to testify under oath that he helped Bush.

CORRUPTION AT ITS BEST..MAKES THIS AMERICAN VERY VERY ANGRY!!! WE AMERICANS ARE NOT STUPID...IT MAKES US SICK WHAT THEY ARE DOING TO OUR COUNTRY!!! NOT TO MENTION ALL OF US AMERICANS!!!!
