As an unmarried, childless woman, she will vote along with the most stringent of chauvinist men on the court against the rights of women to determine the fate of their own bodies.
There are also some skeletons in her closet about misdeeds involving finances and reports when she was managing partner of her law firm. Seems like she may have something in common with Ken Lay.
Oh wait, those two traits are what Bush finds attractive!
Just a thought from another lawyer: I wouldn’t get too worked up over the desire of Miers to have a referendum on whether the American Bar Association should take a pro- or anti-choice position. The ABA takes positions on issues it has no business being involved in. E.g. Tort reform, abortion rights, gun control.
Although I am strongly in favor of abortion rights, many lawyers do not think the ABA should have any official position on the issue since the organization is designed to be a professional association for all lawyers for the betterment and advancement of the profession – not an advocacy group.
(Candidly, although my law firm would pay my yearly dues to the ABA, I have never joined because I think it is a pretty much useless group anyway).
In any event, let’s not all get in a twist over this.
My father-in-law is an Attorney and has been for 30 years.
He’s a progressive and he’s pro-choice but he says that from a strictly legal standpoint Roe vs. Wade was written very poorly and should be repealed and re-written.
He says that a lot of lawyers who take that stance are misunderstood (people think they are anti-choice) even though they are just arguing the technical aspects of the decisions.
Maybe that was her opposition to it at the ABA. I don’t know all the details though.
Based on limited info around the internets it sounds like she may be anti-choice but (kinda) pro-gay. Sounds like a dem base split to me. That and using executive privilege to hide any info/advice from her re: Aug 6th pdb on…
the boston globe considers miers the most unqualified nominee in decades…

Bush gave the code on this a half-dozen times in the speech… he is pro-life, he knows her, she is his kind of judge, she won’t change.
