It Takes More Than A Cabinet Post

In his press conference today, President Bush expressed confusion and disappointment about his standing in the African American community, saying:

I was disappointed, frankly, in the vote I got in the African-American community. I was. I’ve done my best to elevate people to positions of authority and responsibility — not just positions, but positions where they can actually make a difference in the lives of people. I put people in my Cabinet. I put people in my sub-Cabinet.

Maybe President Bush should take a look at the facts if he wants to clear up his confusion:

– Today, 33% of black children live in families under the poverty level.

– Last year, African American households had the lowest median income of any racial group ($30134), down a full percentage point from the year before.

– The unemployment rate for African-Americans is double the rate for white Americans. Over the past six months, the average unemployment rate for white Americans was 4.39 percent; for black Americans, it was 10.06 percent.

– President Bush’s political appointees in the Department of Health and Human Services doctored a report about racial disparities in healthcare. The department deleted a key section detailing racial ”inequalities” and ”disparities” in health care from its findings. Deleted: conclusion by HHS scientists that healthcare disparities are “national problems.” Deleted: key examples of health care disparities, including findings that racial and ethnic minorities are more likely to be diagnosed with late-stage cancer, die of HIV and be subjected to physical restraints in nursing homes.

– When a racial profiling report by the Bureau of Justice Statistics showed African Americans were more likely than whites to have their cars searched or be threatened with force after being pulled over in traffic stops, political supervisers at the bureau ordered the findings deleted. When the study’s author refused, he was fired.

Christy (love you on Al Franken BTW), this is probably the most poignant and striking post ever.

The Far Wrong thinks that if they model the perfect behavior, people will immediately be willing and able to follow it.

But it’s not about creating the ideal. It’s about changing the reality on the ground.

  4. Sue says:

Not alot of African Americans get invited to the White House for dinner to experience Bush’s black friends and members of his inner clique. I’m white, and I’m still waiting for my invite. Sigh…..

  5. Zookeeper says:

Georgie is a rich boy who has never had to work too hard for anything and was never denied a single thing he wanted. It’s impossible for him to have sympathy for people in poverty, a situation he can’t even imagine exists. Katrina should have scrubbed away his denial, but it didn’t.

“A failure of imagination.” Truer words were never spoken.

  6. Gary Kleppe says:

Let’s also remember that the Bushies and their state government pets have done their best to keep African-Americans from being able to vote in Florida, Ohio, and lack of God knows where else.

  7. Terrytheturtle says:

Yes Gary, disenfranchising 50,000+ AAs by illegal voter purging in Florida in 2000 and then executing Operation Jim Crow in Ohio in 2004. You’d wonder why that pisses off the locals? Hmm…more here: http://www.grepalast.com – author of ‘best democracy you can buy’

  8. Bobby says:

George “silver spoon” Bush is so far out of touch with reality. He thinks that appointing a few minorities to his cabinet would be enough to garner the black vote. His appointments are rewards, symbols, or tokens – they are intended to sway the vote – but they are so transparent. When the average person surveys where his life and his family have been taken for the past 5 years, his is convinced that Bush is a phony.
When the poor realize that after five years they are worse off than they were Before Bush, they are reminded again why they didn’t vote for him.

  9. Spudge_Boy says:

Who in Bush’s cabinet is black? Who in his sub-cabinet is black?

I am not being a smart ass, I really can’t think of any.

  10. mighty aphrodite says:

Hey, here’s an idea to help decrease black poverty – STAY IN HIGH SCHOOL, ASK THE TEACHER QUESTIONS, READ THE TEXTBOOKS, STUDY FOR THE TESTS, GRADUATE. GO TO COLLEGE OR GET A JOB. Here’s another idea tried by a minority in the black community: GET MARRIED, THENNNNN HAVE BABIES. These are not complicated concepts, but they do require self-discipline.

So slap mah ‘fro and give me the 4-1-1. How many trophy coloreds do I have to admit to the club before I get a little quid pro quo from the rest of you impoverated, welfare-sucking nubian driveway lanterns, huh? Tell me THAT, homewood. Gawd.”

  13. Southwest Bob says:

Zookeeper #5 … you are right on track about gw. Most conservatives I know, and I have a few in my immediate family, believe poverty, which affects more black Americans than any other group, is caused by being lazy. “Anyone can be successful” is all I ever hear from them. The concept of generational and institutional poverty is foreign to them. Most have never had to work, live or deal with poor Americans. While it’s understandable, it’s also shameful that all Americans can’t comprehend what growing up in poverty can do to a person’s spirit. While a few “break out” the majority live in poverty for their entire lives.

Tossing a symbolically successful and totally out-of-touch “minority” their way is akin to telling women in Iraq that Democracy will change their lives while the social / religious values remain the same. The disconnect breeds anger, thus the anger from those who should be grateful for gw’s symbolic bones tossed their way.

  18. The Witch says:

Mighty dear, I know I shouldn’t feed you, but I can’t help myself. First of all, those are all extremely good pieces of advice and I agree that every last one of them should be followed. My question to you is:

What do you do with the people who have already missed that boat? What do you do with people who dropped out of high school — a big mistake, sure — or had babies before they were married and working steadily — an even bigger mistake? Should they go back to school? How can they if they have to juggle three or more jobs to stay afloat and feed their kids? How about the kids? What do you do with kids who are born to those people? If their school district can’t afford books or paper for them? Who goes into those homes where the parent works a day and a night job, and tells these kids to stay with it? When parents, for whatever reason, don’t tell their own kids not to have sex, who tells them? And suppose, despite those messages, the kids do have sex anyway. Who takes care of the problems that come from that?

    OK, so that’s a lot of questions…

Huh? See? You can’t even answer, can you?

  23. Pete Bogs says:

Bush need only look at the Katrina debacle, which is just the latest example of this administration’s indifference toward African-Americans… he didn’t cause the hurricane, but he wasn’t proactive on the response either – like he was in Fla before the 2004 elections… many of the “reforms” his party have pushed through, though not specifically directed against African-Americans, will make them suffer the most… and, of course, he’s been the only US president to refuse to address the NAACP in decades… true, they’ve spokenly critically of him, but he still owes them the courtesy of a visit… he refuses to deal with any dissent, even in an effort to defend his views… he prefers a “stacked” audience that won’t make any waves…

  24. Marie says:

MA thinks life is so simple. Hers must have been simple – and privileged. After all the solutions are so available to everyone – why don’t they just take advantage of that? At least Archie Bunker was funny in his bigotry — MA is just sick, ignorant, and thoughtless.

  25. LwordLover says:

I don’t think MA’s a bigot. I understand where she’s coming from. And yes, Marie, the solutions are availabe to everyone – it’s called birth control – and helps you attain other goals while enjoying a sex life. I also know whites in the same boat – it’s called the underclass and they keep breeding idiots.

  29. Mary Poppin says:

#25 LwordLover, You say use birth control but the right wing religious nuts wants to take that away from women. They want everyone to keep having children. There are laws in different states that alots pharmacist not to fill a prescription of birth control pills. They have no right to do this. I am not in that age group anymore but I have children and someday grandchildren that will be in that age group. You are not very inform about this.

  30. Terry C. Potter says:

#10 You’re absolutely correct. I just dont’ understand the feedback you’ve gotten from some of these people. What the heck is wrong expecting people to support themselves? I guess it’s true that millions of adult Americans still believe in Santa Claus, so many in fact, that the mental health professionals have given them a special name. Democrats

  31. Jamie says:

Oh, of course — BIRTH CONTROL!!!! That TOTALLY solves the problem of teenaged pregnancy in empoverished areas.

OH BUT WAIT — didn’t the government under Bush just spend a ridiculous amount of money making sure that teenagers are not taught accurate, sensible information about birth control??? Even though these “abstinence only” programs have been shown to be full of incorrect information, and the results of these programs is higher rates of STDs and pregnancy amoung teenagers, aren’t they working on spreading these programs, like the Clamidia they DON’T prevent, around the country and eventually the world??

But you’re right. If these stupid poor teenagers don’t figure out what is and isn’t true about birth control on their own, then they don’t deserve a shot at a decent life. God hates them anyway, right?

  32. Mary Poppin says:

#31 Jamie, How can you say that God hates anyone. You are no christian. God loves everyone.

  33. Gary Kleppe says:

    Mary, he was being sarcastic.

  34. Jamie says:

    Mary,

It was sarcasm based on the old belief that the poor are poor because God is punishing them for some failing — this is an idea that seems to be making a comeback.

And you are right. I’m not a Christian.

  35. Redleg says:

#10- I just wish my white college students would read the textbook and ask questions in class.

#10 and #30 You really must be idiots to derogate an entire group of people based on their skin color or on your simplistic beliefs about race and ethnicity. I feel sorry for your children (if you have any) if you teach them to hate in that way.

I also have to wonder how well educated you are given the stupidity and narrow-mindedness of your views. What did you really learn in high school/college that would give you such hateful and distorted impressions of Black Americans? Must have been that damned lib’rul education. You better turn to Rush Limbaugh for salvation! Alleluja!

  36. joe says:

Love the post, but it is worth noting that, I think for example, black unemployment has traditionally been twice that of whites. Ditto some of the other indicators. ie, blacks have always been worse off than whites in american.
A better way to reflect Bush’s inattention to the racial disparities in our country might be to look at how those numbers have actually gotten worse under his reign. But an excellent overall point you make about his hypocricy / gross opportunism.

  37. LwordLover says:

Mary Poppin wrote “You say use birth control but the right wing religious nuts wants to take that away from women.” Right – but for now it’s legal. And you’re taliking about the morning after pill that pharmasists won’t fill. Look – You’ve got to be dumb, deaf, and blind to not know about birth control. Sure they have abstainence only education, but anyone who can go to planned parent hood or ask a teacher off the record. Not to mention a guidence councelor. I’m not saying accidents don’t happen – but when they do it seems the underclass is the last to get an abortion. The rich white kids are the ones who can both affor them, and don’t want to ruin thier lives with the burden of motherhood.

  38. Mary Poppin says:

    # 38 I am not talking about the morning after pill. There was a Pharmacist in Madison, WI that would not fill a birth control prescription. You do not know what you are talking about. Just go on the internet and check that different states are doing this. The morning after pill you have to have a prescription.

  39. Jamie says:

    Lwordlover,

You are wrong about the pharmacists — they are also refusing to dispence the pill. The ordinary pill that women have had access to since the 70s is now become more difficult to get.

The problem with the abstinence only programs is not that there is a lack of info that the kids can say “Gee, I better ask my counsillor about this” (as if kids are going to approach an adult who’s job it is to disipline them and ask about sex), it’s that the info given is WRONG and gives the impression that “this is all there is to know.” Kids are left with more myths than facts.

And if you think that teenagers are going to take the initive to find out what they are not being taught in school before the succomb to their urges, then you haven’t been a teenager for a long time. The last part of the brain to develop is the part that controls descision making. Teenagers are more likely to be controled by thier urges than adults because they simply don’t have the tools to fight them as effectively. That’s not to say that all teenagers succomb to it — but many do. To not give them all the facts in school without them having to do the research independantly (how many teenagers do all their homework, much less take on other projects?) is beyond asinine — it’s suicidal as a society.

And where are you getting your info that “the underclass is the last to have an abortion” — as if it is a problem of williness to take responsibility. There is a problem in the “underclass” of access — when the pro-lifers gain a foothold (as they have in the last decade) the first to feel the effects are the so-called “underclass.” Rich, white girls have always have access to safe abortion — even when it was illegal. Not true for poor girls in bad neighborhoods.

Your postings say more about you than they do about the poor.

  40. David B says:

You’re kidding right? It the perfect world of headupmyass that you, #10 and #25 live in, everyone has the same access to education, training and jobs. Therefore, everyone can provide for themselves equally. WAKE UP, the plight of blacks due to slavery is a stain on our society that will never be removed. Despite riots in the 60’s education, work, and general living conditions for most blacks has not improved much. I guess you missed the Katerina debates after the pictures.

Sir, look in the mirror, you will see a bigot. You 3 speak like a true Republicans, “Me first and Screw everyone else”. I’ll bet you call yourself a Christian as well.

  41. Redleg says:

Another problem with Bush’s statement is that his two most visible Black appointees, Colin Powell and Condi Rice, were both put in the State Department, a cabinet that Bush has de-valued time and time again because he doesn’t believe in diplomacy. He has given his token Blacks jobs with little discretion- look how Bush kept jerking Colin Powell back when Powell wanted to actually try some diplomacy with N. Korea and with Israel and the Palestinians. No- Bush just wanted his boy Colin to trump up charges against Iraq so we could go to war.

  42. Spudge_Boy says:

Come on people. How can we expect these stupid NeoCons to know about anything that Bush (Rove) spoon feeds them. These people actually believe what they are posting. Even though they are absolutely incorrect.

I wish more people would think for themselves, but the Bushies count on these people not thinking for themselves.

  43. to the right of you says:

  44. Spudge_Boy says:

Can you name any others besdie Condi and Alphonso Jackson?

That would be better. You know, give me some names. You know, facts.

  45. mighty aphrodite says:

#18 – Good points – but when one mistake is made (dropping out of school, getting pregnant, etc.) why compound it??? Get back to school – even if only night classes are available – trade off babysitting with a neighbor or sister. And for God’s sake, don’t have four more kids by four ne’er do well jerks who won’t help support their children. The opportunities ARE THERE – and no, it is not an easy road. But someone in my firm asked once how to build higher self esteem. The poor ba*&%rd was serious. I told him, “life is not as complicated as your DemFriends tell you – set small goals, achieve them and keep going. That DOESN’T mean detours are not on each of our roads – but how do we deal with failure, mistakes or disappointments?

    #21 – Spoken like a true moral relativist –

#36 – “#10- I just wish my white college students would read the textbook and ask questions in class.”
Prof. Redleg, if your white college students don’t pass your class, please flunk them. I assume you are capable of giving them a failing grade. Let them (or their parents) cry all they want.

You are welcome to disagree with my positions, BUT you cannot dispute the FACTS (not my personal bias) that successful, upwardly mobile blacks (and other minoritites) have generally availed themselves of educational channels, hard work, and marriage. Your guess at my level of scholarship is just that, a guess. Rest assured, I did not hold your poor grammar or spelling against such a learned person.

“Let’s make excuses for them because we did not let them read for 246 years…” That won’t wash for the last 50 years. My solution to the crappy schools for poor kids? Accept ONLY “A” and “B” students for teacher credentialing programs – no more stupid teachers!!!! STARTING pay for all teachers in our nations poor schools : $100,000.-/ year for ten months of teaching. NO MORE TENURE – kick the burned out relics waiting for their pension to the curb!!!

Yes, to my sorrow, those numbers have gone up exponentially in the white community, too – but the racists who cricized me conveniently forgot that the discussion was about “black poverty”. The white tweakers and druggies are bigger losers as they did not have to contend with residual racial stereotypes.

  46. Mary Poppin says:

The “FACT” is, you and your racist bullshit, like that degenerate gambler and hypocrite, Bill Bennett, are history. Argue with that.

  58. mighty aphrodite says:

#58 – Armed with facts, Duh, argument is no problem. YOU should know that the “morally reprehensible” hypothetical discussed by Bill Bennett (the abortion of black babies to reduce crime) WAS used (in sweeping context) by a darling of the left, Henry Morganthaler, the abortion KING of Canada. His sick suggestion that “unwanted children” are responsible for the spike in crime may be found in the book, “Building a World Community” beginning on p. 144. (Prometheus Books, NY, ed. Paul Kurtz). Bennett was discussing the absurdity of such a premise, in the same way Jonathan Swift did when discussing the starving masses in Ireland in his “Modest Proposal”. Being so bright, DUH, you knew about “Dr.” Morganthaler’s “argument”, of course.

  59. Spudge_Boy says:

    #59

Bennett’s comments were racist, no matter what spin you try and put on it. He said what he said, then repeated it to make sure that people understood his position.

But, I am sure that you don’t know what is racist and what isn’t, because you yourself are a racist.

  60. Huh? says:

Being so bright, I know the subject better than you, Bill Bennett, or just about anybody else who hasn’t studied Criminal Justice in America. And I won’t even address your comments about Morganthaler, because we all know he had nothing to do with Bennett’s racist defense of the the indefensible pseudo-science of eugenics.
You should take your cue from Bennett and stop digging yourself a deeper hole and just let someone kick the excavted dirt on top of you and bury yourself like he did.

    The Crime Drop

In America, the rich get richer and the poor get prison and race has nothing to do with it.

Unwanted babies of any race are as likely to end up like Charles Manson as not. If I didn’t tell you his name first, and told you the story of his childhood, even you may have considered that a mitigating circumstance, considering it was never proved that he actually killed anyone with his own hand. Until you learned his name, then your biases, prejudices and fallible reasoning would kick in. You are an ill-informed moron and it’s high time you remain silent in the deep hole you keep digging for yourself. I will continue to kick you back into that hole, everytime you climb out and open your mouth. The information I link to is purely for the benefit of the intelligent and sincere who read these threads.

  62. Redleg says:

#46 You must be high if you think my grammar and spelling are flawed. I notice that you didn’t actually give an example to back up your accusation. Besides that, you shouldn’t evaluate a person’s level of literacy by their posts on a blog. A lot of people type their comments very quickly and without a whole lot of “craft” going into them.

As for your other comment to me- it is probably true that minority professionals and managers have availed themselves of higher ed. opportunities. It is also true that people from lower socio-economic backgrounds have very limited opportunities and more difficult circumstances compared to more well-to-do people. You seem to imply that Black people are poor because they are too stupid or too lazy to get education. I reject that notion.

  63. Huh? says:

Whitey Hermaphrodite is a ponce. A long gone and buried ponce.

  64. mighty aphrodite says:

#63 – Dear Prof. Redleg, How interesting that you have mentally assigned me to the educational “backwater” – and whine when someone who does not know you, reads what you (obviously) did not proof read and rightly or wrongly, is given the impression you were an average student. Perhaps you may wish to pick up a well-worn copy of “Perspectives in Arguement” as “You must be high…” is not intellectually persuasive. I expected better. You are quick to ridicule my suggestions as naive and/or simplistic but try as I might, I have yet to read a SUGGESTION made by YOU to help socially and economically elevate those blacks, whites, and other poor people who wish to improve their lives and the lives of their families. As an aside, previously you mentioned wishing that middle class white students would learn the material you assigned. I told you to flunk them if they did not perform academically. I am most interested on your policy of failing “low performing” students.
“You seem to imply that Black people are poor because they are too stupid or too lazy to get education. I reject that notion.” -Prof. Redleg
NO WHERE do I imply such a notion. I do believe there are marvelous opportunities out there, but many contributing factors can hinder the educational development of poor children. I do believe many poor children, from a cross-section of races and ethnicities, are harpooned by cultures that do not value educational excellence and academic effort. On the other hand, certain poor communitites have placed the attainment of education at the pinnacle of their culture. Amazingly, these groups have out paced the majority community. Across every community there are certain intelligent, but lazy people, who want the rewards of hard work without the sweat. If they avail themselves in criminal enterprise(s) (whether we are discussing Ken Lay or drug dealers) I would conclude they were not stupid – rather, lazy and/or immoral.
In conclusion, I once had a client with a dear, sweet, clueless mother. She stupidly believed EVERYTHING her criminal son told her – and NEVER cross checked ANYTHING he said. At the end of one of our meetings, she tearfully told me “what a good boy” her 22 year old criminal was. Instead of patting her hand, and giving her the perfunctory “there, there” I told her sadly, that her “son was a piece of shit”. After her shock subsided, she admitted she was “at a loss” on how to handle this “kid”. Mom quit “bailing his ass out of trouble” – I recently heard he is doing much better and is planning a productive future.

Dear Sponge – have you ever stopped to consider that I may only conclude you are stupid when you write. THERE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN UNPLANNED OR UNWANTED CHILDREN -****MANY PEOPLE WALKING AROUND TODAY WERE UNPLANNED*** AND THE VAST MAJORITY AREN’T CRIMINALS. Please comment on Dr. Morganthaler’s premise, if you can. Please comment on Bennett’s reference to “black abortion as morally reprehensible “, if you can. The racists in the Progressive movement do NOT want blacks to succeed. If they are “kept down” the “sensitive, caring” phonies on the left can exploit them at the ballot box.

Hey Mighty Aphrodite, what race are you anyway? Just curious…

He’s white. Even if it was only on the inside. But he’s white on the outside. And I notice he wouldn’t touch my smackdown of his bullshit. He’s some young college repuklikan who spent most of his time cheating little old ladies out of their money through direct mail scams while stabbing his fellow young repuklikans in the back during campus political infighting, the closest thing that litlle turd has ever come to real combat, and how they prepare for public life so they can drown our government in the bathtub and milk the poor and middle class some more. He’s why rope was invented and special slip knots were devised.

  68. Huh? says:

No wonder he wants to drag Morgenthaler into this. He’s pissed because Morgenthaler has been vindicated and honored recently for the terrible crimes committed against him by morons like whitey the hermaphroditey in Canada. Morgenthaler never said anything about “black babies” because he wasn’t a degenerat gambler, racist and eugenicist like Bennett. He just said “unwanted babies”. I’d have to agree with Morgenthaler that an unwanted baby is less likely to thrive than a wanted one, regardless of race, and what race do you suppose has the highest number of throwaway kids in this country? White. You can check that by the stats on runaways. Better trolls, please.

FOR THE RIGHT TO ABORTION – 1975
    (EXCERPTS)
    THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: That the delegates at the 1975 General Assembly of the Unitarian Universalist Association reaffirm the right of any female of any age or marital or economical status to have an abortion at her own request upon medical/social consultation of her own choosing; and urge all Unitarian Universalists in the United States to resist through their elected representatives the efforts now under way by some members of the Congress of the United States and state legislatures to curtail that right by means of constitutional amendment or other means;

    AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That we urge all Unitarian Universalists and all Unitarian Universalist societies in Canada through the Canadian Unitarian Council to strive for making these rights available in Canada;

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That the General Assembly deplores the legal persecution by the Canadian authorities of Dr. Henry Morgenthaler for his courageous fight for the abortion rights of Canadian women and his willingness to assist them in exercising those rights. We deplore particularly the attack by the Crown prosecutor on the jury system, which has twice acquitted Dr. Morgenthaler; the mistreatment of Dr. Morgenthaler in prison after his second acquittal; the shocking ruling of the Canadian courts that an Appellate Court can declare a defendant guilty after he has been acquitted by a jury; and the announced intention of the Crown prosecutor to carry on ten more prosecutions of Dr. Morgenthaler for past abortions. The General Assembly commends the Canadian Unitarian Council for its support of Dr. Morgenthaler and requests the CUC to convey the concern of the General Assembly to the Prime Minister of Canada and the Prime Minister of Quebec, and to request the Prime Minister of Canada to procure for Dr. Morgenthaler a royal pardon.

    Asswipe Aphroditey,

I can direct you to some fine sites alledging that thousands of black slaves fought on the confederate side during the civil war to preserve their comfortable way of life as slaves on the old plantation, but something tells me you probably are familiar with that bullshit, too.

  70. Huh? says:

Thanks, Hermaphrodite. Abortion is not a big issue with me, but now that I’ve read about Morgenthaler, thanks to you, I am quite impressed with the man. A holocaust survivor even, but opposed to zionism. You must hate the guy as much as I hate Bennett, or you.

  71. I-RIGHT-I says:

    – Today, 33% of black children live in families under the poverty level.

I’m surprised it’s not higher. But whose fault is it? The President’s for not giving away more of my tax dollars? Yup. Losers.

    – Last year, African American households had the lowest median income of any racial group ($30134), down a full percentage point from the year before.

Tell them to work harder and try some of those jobs Vicente Fox says the American Negro won’t do but his people will. Work? Yeah right. Why bother when they can just let me pay for everything?

    – The unemployment rate for African-Americans is double the rate for white Americans. Over the past six months, the average unemployment rate for white Americans was 4.39 percent; for black Americans, it was 10.06 percent.

I think if you’d count those Negro men between the age of 16 and 35 who are working very hard at criminal enterprises the unemployment rates would be about equal. Why is it Mexicans in this country seem to have no problem finding work?

We all know that you dumbyas on the right don’t get alot. Maybe if you took the tin foil hat off, reception, comprehension and retention would improve, but I doubt it. It’s not the reception, it’s the receiver. It’s not plugged in.

  77. Huh? says:

No wonder you girl’s are so cranky. Ann has more balls than both of you. About the same amount of brains, less than half the normal human dose.

First, Bush has no right to say “Trust me.” He was elected to represent the American people, not to be dictator for eight years. Among the coalitions that elected Bush are people who have been laboring in the trenches for a quarter-century to change the legal order in America. While Bush was still boozing it up in the early ’80s, Ed Meese, Antonin Scalia, Robert Bork and all the founders of the Federalist Society began creating a farm team of massive legal talent on the right….

Being a Supreme Court justice ought to be a mind-numbingly tedious job suitable only for super-nerds trained in legal reasoning like John Roberts. Being on the Supreme Court isn’t like winning a “Best Employee of the Month” award. It’s a real job….

Bush may as well appoint his chauffeur head of NASA as put Miers on the Supreme Court….

However nice, helpful, prompt and tidy she is, Harriet Miers isn’t qualified to play a Supreme Court justice on “The West Wing,” let alone to be a real one.

    1. I did not “assign you to an educational backwater.” I am not an intellectual snob.
    2. I realize that the authorities on rhetoric do not recommend the use of the phrase “you must be high.” I didn’t intend the statement to be part of a persuasive argument.
    3. You once again critiqued my grammar and spelling without actually giving an example of poor grammar or spelling. Shame shame shame.
    4. Quit calling me “Dear.” I don’t like be patronized.
    5. I don’t have the time to waste writing a lengthy rebuttal to your tediously long rantings. This will have to suffice. Now go away.

  92. mighty aphrodite says:

#91 – Dear Prof Redleg – I am NOT patronizing you – I am merely polite and deferential to your high level of educational attainment. Do you dimiss your students with, “Now go away”? I do learn something from you each time you impart your wisdom.

  93. senatortombstone says:

Post#36, Posters #10 and #30 are not racist, they are simply stating common sense. Perhaps the real racists are those who don’t hold AA’s to the same degree of of accountability as they do whites. By your logic, the black, Kerry-voting John McWhorter is a racist.

and to those who call Condi a token. The woman can speak four is the new secretary of state. You don’t put a token in such a position. And by the way, she could out think any of you “enlightened” liberals with one lobe tied behind her brain. She is that damn smart!

  94. mighty aphrodite says:

Ever notice how liberals love “racial tension” – ignorant blacks are easier to exploit that way. How else to explain the Dem GLEE over Katrina??? Political opportunism trumps morals EVERYTIME with the majority of Dems.

  95. Redleg says:

    Mighty Aphrodite,
Once again you failed to address my points. In one sentence you claimed deference for me while in the next you implied that I treated you and my students dismissively. You claimed that you were being polite but continued to refer to me as “Dear Prof Redleg” even though I told you it was patronizing. Your comments are neither polite or deferential- in fact, your comments are intended to insult and to mock. That’s fine, but don’t pretend to respect me or even understand me. I suspect that you find me as repugnant as I find your racist ideas.

  96. mighty aphrodite says:

Dear Prof. Redleg, Stop being so liberally sensitve!! If my kids were to meet you, I would not allow them to address you as ‘Redleg’ – such great disrespect for elders is rampant today! If you have a PhD, I would suggest they call you ‘Dr. Redleg’. To illustrate my point: One of my dear, sweet lib neighbors came over the other day and asked that I instruct my 17 year old daughter NOT to call her ‘Mrs. So& So’. She said it “made her feel old”. I asked her how old she was. She replied that she was 38. I told her that to a 17 year old, she WAS old; furthermore, they were NOT friends or peers so Mrs. WAS appropriate.

In the event we were not fond of a neighbor, I would not allow my child to say, “I think John is mean”. Rather, “I think, Mr. Johnson is mean,” would be acceptable. To reiterate, my respect is for the attainment of your high level of education. When you said, “Now go away,” my question was legitimate as you provided evidence of dismissing those with whom you diasgree – not very tolerant, I must say. The fact that you construed my polite address as patronizing, well, quite frankly, THAT’S YOUR PROBLEM. (Now, if I called you a fu#@%*g pervert or child molester – BE OFFENDED!!) You, sir, have no idea what my intention is when I address you as such. In court, your whiny, inaccurate objection would be over ruled as speculative. I respect you, but I do not understand you. I’m trust you do not find THAT objectionable. I do not find you repugnant – I find you NAIVE. My assertions on poverty and illegitimacy are attacked by those who often seek, not to solve problems, but to enlarge the dependency class. On the political front may I suggest a new slogan, “VICTIMS FOR VICTORY”. I do NOT form my opinions of people based on race – I judge people on their behaviour – after all, talk is cheap!! Sadly, there are many racists today – in all RACES. Again, you are VERY busy ASSUMING much – but when in doubt, ALWAYS call someone a RACIST. It’s easier than research and rebuttal.

  97. mighty aphrodite says:

#36 -”I also have to wonder how well educated you are given the stupidity and narrow-mindedness of your views. What did you really learn in high school/college that would give you such hateful and distorted impressions of Black Americans? Must have been that damned lib’rul education. You better turn to Rush Limbaugh for salvation! Alleluja!
    Comment by Redleg — October 4, 2005 @ 3:54 pm”

To address ALL of your “pertinent” premises:
I am probably not as well educated as you. I have a BS and a JD from a fairly well-known univerity and college. (My parents did not pay for any under grad or grad schools for my sister, brothers or me. They were convinced – correctly – that we were the kind of students who would get better grades and study harder if our $$$ was footing the bill.) Pre-children, Mr. Aphrodite and I lived in the US Virgin Islands for seven years and have many friends of many races. As I said previously, I do not judge people on their racial membership – I judge people on their behaviour. I have had many clients with wealthy parents – some of them were horribly parented, others appeared to do their best. I have had some clients with poor parents who were TERRIFIC parents. Again, my judgement of the parenting skills was NOT based on race or economic standing – I am a performance based person – despite lib’rul education (sic). P.S. Do YOU flunk students who do not perform to your explicit expectations?? Have a great weekend!

  98. Redleg says:

    Might Asshole,
Are you still here stirring up shit? Doesn’t the KKK have a website that you can grace with your high-and-mighty legal mind?

I know you tried to backpeddle from your previous statements. I’ll repeat your racist statement back to you since you’re too fucking dense to get it:

    Mighty Aphrodite said:
“Hey, here’s an idea to help decrease black poverty – STAY IN HIGH SCHOOL, ASK THE TEACHER QUESTIONS, READ THE TEXTBOOKS, STUDY FOR THE TESTS, GRADUATE. GO TO COLLEGE OR GET A JOB. Here’s another idea tried by a minority in the black community: GET MARRIED, THENNNNN HAVE BABIES. These are not complicated concepts, but they do require self-discipline.”

If you can’t see that this statement stereotypes Blacks then you must be dim. You blame poverty on laziness and poor choices but not on the historical and systematic discrimination against Blacks and the real obstacles many of them face trying to lift themselves out of poverty. A reasonable person would attribute poverty to both internal and external factors. You prefer to blame the people without any consideration for their situation.

As for being “performance-based”- I recognize the importance of linking outcomes to performance but, as a professor, I also recognize the importance of reinforcing positive behaviors such as hard work, pro-social behaviors, learning orientation, etc. Remember that pure performance based systems can sometimes induce dysfunctional behaviors (as in the case of Enron, et al.).

Now, perhaps it was impolite for me to tell you to “go away.” For that I apologize.

  99. dcdulce says:

don’t you love when racists faced with their own bullshit, start waving their credentials? “i have a BS & JD and i spell behavior with a “u” “…therefore justifying all their ignorant comments

  100. Ilean says:

The real ignorance is calling remarks racist….it is a cop out term!
If a person behaves stupidly he is behaving stupidly …color doesn’t change that! Black people are intelligent people they don’t have to hide behind ‘racism’ so quit abusing that intelligence!!
