DeLay’s New Excuse: “I Misspoke”

Since DeLay was first indicted, he has bashed District Attorney Ronnie Earle and dismissed the charges:

This is a frivolous indictment. I am indicted just for the reason to make me step aside as majority leader.

But on Rush Limbaugh’s show (10/4/05), DeLay offered another explanation, based on his meeting with Earle a month before the first indictment (Sept. 28):

I can’t really talk about specifics of that interview because it’s under grand jury secrecy and, unlike Ronnie Earle, I’m going to adhere to that agreement, but suffice it to say, I misspoke one sentence — one sentence — and they have based all of this on one sentence, and that basically, they think that before the check was cut and sent to the Republican National Committee, I approved that check, which is totally false. I didn’t know that this went on ’til well after it had happened.

DeLay’s excuse doesn’t hold up. Earle said the new indictment came about based on new information that “came to the attention of the District Attorney’s Office” last weekend (not a month ago). DeLay has consistently said the whole scheme was legal, but has not disputed the facts. Looks like he finally recognizes the merits of indictment and admits that he may have brought them on upon himself. Next step: recognizing that money laundering is a crime.

So I have a hard time keeping track…how many excuses are we up to?

  2. Mary Poppin says:

What a joke, how many excuses can he make up?

  3. Tonya says:

Maybe DeLay will now be cleared? If it’s based on a misunderstanding, that should come to light. I’m not saying it will, just wondering.

Any thoughts on if he’ll be able to return to power?

  4. Dartanyon says:

DeLay has flapped his trap more than a toilet being flushed.

He’s tried himself in the court of public opinion and his arrogance prevents him from keeping quiet until his case goes to the jury.

DeLay is in trouble: being indicted for conspiracy AND money laundering isn’t like stealing a package of gum from a 7-11.

Even with Ronnie Earle’s piss-poor record, DeLay could easily be convicted and wind up serving jailtime.

    WELCOME TO OZ, BITCH!!!

Why are there 7 comments but it says there are 6? (Well I guess now 8 comments but it says 7 (unless somebody else is posting right not and then it would be 9 comments but it says 8) )

Bug in the Code??? Say it ain’t so! I’m not judging you TP, I feel your pain. I’m a software developer so I know how bad you feel about this flagrant defect. :)

  7. Original Andrew says:

Sorry, I guess that was OT. I guess this is too. DAMN! I’ll stop now.

  8. Jay says:

Delay and the K St. Project are in deep trouble. The simple fact that he’s been indicted twice (the first time by an extremely cautious prosecutor by all accounts) means that they have to goods on him in spades and this investigation will certainly reach other power players within the GOP crime family. I expect further indictments and I expect Delay to squeal like the little bitch that he is when the junk starts to hit the fan. He will not go down alone. Some of the big boys (including Norquist) are scrambling for the best lawyers in D.C. these days, I’m sure.

We all owe Ronnie Earle a huge debt of gratitude for removing the first brick, as others have followed, won’t be long before the house starts to fall.

  9. Mary Poppin says:

Delay is going down. He will get jail time. He is the second biggest crook next to old Bushie. Shay said yesterday he does not want him back as majority leader. This is good.

  10. Magnum DB says:

DeLay can lie all he wants, the facts will remain the same, and those facts are what will get him in court, no matter how he tries to spin it. And of course if he does lie in court – which almost seems possible, being that he appears to be a habitual liar – he’ll be charged with lying under oath!

  11. Sharon Cox says:

Jay #9 it can’t be soon enough for me. One thing I am concerned about is all this yapping Delay is doing will give his attorney some fuel for not getting a good jury. I keep remembering a quote from some one once. ” There is no justice, only points of law”…..Blessings

  12. Jay says:

    Sharon,

Yes, there have been so many high profile miscarriages of justice recently, it makes sense to be skeptical. I think there is an important intangible here though. Momentum. It can be a powerful force.

Keep blogging and keep your fingers crossed that the corrupted can’t corrupt the courageous.

  13. Original Andrew says:

Maybe a judge can slap a gag order on them or hold them in contempt!

  14. Dr. Van Nostrand says:

I hope Delay keeps talking. I bet Earle is keeping notes on everything he says.

Mistakes were made. I have no recollection of selling missiles to Iran. I was not informed. My previous statement is now inoperative. My dog ate it.

    Dance, Tom, dance!

  16. Southwest Bob says:

Delay’s problem is that he has been acting like he’s above the law for so long that he’s fallen into the DC trap of actually thinking the laws don’t apply to him! Now that the law is squarely on his chest and getting heavier by the day, he’s slowly coming to the realization that he’s just a jerk and the law can hammer him just as he’s hammered others. Very fitting that what goes around comes around for clowns like Delay.

  17. Pablo in Mexico says:

DeLay wrote the proposed budget, and the shrub loves it.

It asks nothing of the top wage earners or otherwise rich folks, just takes away more from the poor and the middle class.

The shrub will argue that without the tax cuts, the economy would be in the tank. Hey shrub, the economy has been in the doldrums for 5 years now, and is just about to tank again. Thanks to your “trickle down” theory of economics, whcy has been disproven time and time again.

You realize, dont you shrub, that you are asking your grandchildren, and their children, to pay for all of your crass mistakes? Your idiocy is beyon belief.

You harp, dear shrub, about social security, and what bad shape it is in. You realize of course that if you had not taken 360 billion from the coffers of social security to pay for your illegal war, that social security would be in no crisis whatsoever today.

Oh shrubbie, what are we going to do with you? You have our treasury department borrowing 1 billion a day from the Chinese, a communist government who want to bury us. Well, you are helping them dig the grave.

Oh, and shrub, what a success your NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND progrom has been. Californias department of education reports that high schoolers cannot even pass rudimentary english and math.

Hurrican Katgrina came along shrubby and you had your loyal congress pass an emergency 10.5 billion assistance package. Sorry to report to you, but no one knows where that money went.

Sorry shrub, but you are a miserable failure, and the worst president ever appointed by the supreme court.

  18. Joe Sixpack says:

Curiously, I have not seen any rightwinger step up on the site here to defend one of their own. Where is NED, or mightly aphrodite? Well, as a rightwing redneck, I guess it is up to me to help DeLay out and defend him. Sure, many people will call Tom an unethical, religious whore who exploits every thing he can for political gain. Others here would point out that he is a sorry-assed dipshit and has had warning, after warning, after warning from the Ethics Committee over the past 8 eight years—ignored warnings that have finally caught up with him.

But correct me if I’m wrong, but when questioned about his unethical behavior by Chris Wallace on Fox News two days ago, he pointed out that this was “politics at its sleaziest.” I mean, you have to agree with his rationale here, as who would know more about sleazy politics than good ol’ Tom?

  19. progressive and proud says:

What do you expect from an exterminator?

  20. RedStateProud says:

I am a conservative and do think it’s too early to rush to conclusions. Let him have his trial.

  21. Jorge Arbusto says:

I’m trying to figure out just exactly how Delay “stood up for the Contras.” Abramoff and North were raising money through speaking tours, as best I can tell, but when and how was Hot Tub Tom involved? Did he “misspeak” about that? Did he really want to attach himself to that criminal conspriacy too? Or is this just one of those right wing street cred bloviations?

  22. Patriot says:

Earle has already won. This case is about the awareness of exclusive, preferential constituants, and their “pay for access” priveledges.

  23. Mary Poppin says:

Delay thinks he is about the law. He will go to jail.
That is what he deserves. We don’t need him in congress.

  24. mighty aphrodite says:

I am not a huge Tom Delay fan. I DO think there is something wrong (note I didn’t say “illegal”) about sending $190K to the RNC and getting back $190K for congressional candidates. I’m waiting for more specifics on Texas law. I do have to laugh when DemDefenders raise the “Ronnie went after lots of Dems” argument. MOST POLS IN TEXAS WERE DEMS FOR THE LONGEST TIME! I also remember his capricious filing in the case of Kay Bailey Hutchison – dismissed. Will wait and see! Joe, would you quit peeling the label off that longneck!

  25. Marie says:

Delay’s demise is one that is anticipated with glee, but let’s not get too excited yet. He is going to be hard to take down. Pardon my cynicism, but we have witnessed years of lies with horrific consequences going unpunished, so this “money laundering” seems not up to the task.
Then again, they finally got Capone on a tax charge.

  26. Nathan Bedford Forrest says:

Hmm most pols were Dem in Texas for the longest time – why that’s right. Then they passed that there ‘Civil Rights’ law and gave the nigras the vote and let them have ‘equal rights’. That’s when all the good old boys switched over to the party of Lincoln to turn Jim Crow into a corporation – who would’ve thought such upstanding white folks like Strom Thurmond, Trent Lott and Jesse Helms would’ve been Republicans? We don’t get many democrats ‘taking the sheet’ these days.

Got your pillow cases boys? Yee hah! Let’s ride.

  27. P.P. says:

#25 – Most politicians in TX are now Republicans. So…what’s the problem?

  28. progressive and proud says:

Aphro – what are you doing here? Why do you hang around people that you hate? Why do you feel the need to be “told off?” What kind of psychological issues have brought you here? What do get from us? Do you think you can change minds here? Do you just like to spin your wheels? Are you on some strange sort of mission? Don’t you have something better to do with your time?

I just can’t understand the need for these trolls to be punished. All they do here is whine, bitch and insult others that don’t care what they think. Pathetic.

  29. Mary Poppin says:

The problem is we need to get rit of the Republican. 2006 The Dems will take over.

  30. Joe Sixpack says:

Hey, RedStateProud #21, I like your juice on not rushing to conclusions. The leftwingers here are acting like Tom DeLay’s republican politicos going after the impeachment of Bill Clinton, huh? I like your statement that we should let Tom Delay have his trial, though.

But correct me if I’m wrong, but Tom DeLay sure didn’t feel that way when he led the republican charge to get Clinton. I mean, I’m on your side here but remember what DeLay said on October 9, 1998? “Sometimes hard, sometimes unpleasant, this path relies on truth, justice and the rigorous application of the principle that no man is above the law.” He evidently doesn’t like that same rigorous application being applied to his own catbox, eh?

He also accused President Clinton of using “leagalese and lawyerese to do two-steps” around the question. Kind of sounds like he’s doing the same thing himself now, don’t you think?

  31. progressive and proud says:

These trolls sure “laugh” alot. I picture them laughing hysterically with great big eyes and coffee jitters while they type madness.

  32. Joe Sixpack says:

Hey, aphrodite, #25, how are doing? Myself, I’m sill swigging on one of those longnecks you mentioned and before long, I’ll be pissing and moaning in the can again. Speaking of pissing and moaning, our boy DeLay is really getting handed his ass over all this unethical crap, huh? I’m with you though, I bet the “specifics in Texas law” you mentioned will help him out of it—probably changed or has a loophole like redistricting was done.

But tell me if I’m wrong, aphrodite, but don’t you find him just a little bit—sleazy? I mean, beyond his unethical and highly questionable dealings? By the way, I wonder what kind of greasy shit he uses on his hair trying to make himself look younger.

  33. Sharon Cox says:

You are right Mary, however, at present we must clean up our own house and senate as well. Many of our dem’s. are merely repub. lite’s and have been rolling over so long they seem to have trouble standing up with us. I have sent thousands of letters over the years, snail mail and now e-mail and rarely do I get responses and even more rare are their vote’s with country and party in mind. Usualy they will do as the majority did in the last election, that is, vote for one tiny amendment while the big part of the bill is down right anti country and anti american. The big picture has been over looked for to long. Our country is in a giant mess and we need some strong leadership in our party. If they don’t step up to the plate and do what is right, help impeach, stop the war in Iraq and against the American people, help our people down south, keep our rights in tact and fight for our constitution I’m not going to vote for them. Have even sent them all letters to that affect and gotten no response, that leads me to think there is a degree of corruption on all sides. Sorry to be so negative but I have made my choices and backed them up with actions that so far prove me right in my thinking….Blessings

  34. bob says:

once again the “little people” take it in the ass. wake up you sheep! your barn is on fire, and your pretending the barn will protect you. your government has been hijacked, your money has been destroied, your rights? well we wont mention those, read the bill of rights lately? you dont have any, not one. america is a used up diseased whore, in debt up to your great grand childrens’ eyeballs. with out electricity your 500thousand$ houses are worthless boxes, no running water, no refrigeration, 5th and sixth generation suburbanites with out the survival skills of a gnat. if youve got any thing you wanted to do before you die, nows the time. have a nice day

  35. tigrismus says:

Man, he lies like a rug: witnesses, and their lawyers, are not compelled to keep their testimony secret, the prosecutor, grand jurors, and the stenographer are. Also, “mispoke?” Did he just admit he told an untruth under oath?

  36. Hunter Morrow says:

“Tom Delay here. Sorry everybody, I forgot to incriminate myself for perjury, too. Have a nice day!”

  37. deegahl says:

Delay has been on about 30 talkshows and NOW he is going to remain quiet and “adhere” to Grand Jury secrecy? Sounds like he was told by his lawyer to get off the air.

  38. Mary Poppin says:

#34 Sharon I agree with you about there are some Dems that don’t belong in congress. I have James Sensenbrenner as my House Representative. I have writen to him but all I get is his spin on things. When he has townhall meetings if you don’t agree with him he is very rude. He is one person that needs to go. I have two Senators that are Democrats. Russ Feingold is one which I like. He is thinking of running for President and Senator Kohl is the other one. He is a low key Senator. This is all new to me I guess I woke up when old Bushis took office in 2000. I hope we can take our America back from these cronies.

  42. ElectricBassPlayer says:

#38 nailed it. Tom has said enough to satisfy the right-wing media hucksters, giving them enough to run with (we’re already seeing “news” stories explaining that he misspoke), while hiding behind non-existant grand jury secrecy rules.

“I can’t really talk about specifics of that interview because it’s under grand jury secrecy and, unlike Ronnie Earle, I’m going to adhere to that agreement. . .”

As a witness HE’S FREE TO DISCUSS ANYTHING HE SAID!!!

He’s such a goddam liar. I don’t hate these guys because they’re conservatives. I hate them because they earned it. Every day it seems like there’s something that makes me despise them anew.

  43. Pablo in Mexico says:

Hey Aphro, you dont know how Kay Baily Hutchison, the alcoholic Texas senator got off that case do you?

Let me tell you, look it up if you dont believe me.

Earle had her dead to rights, had taped conversation of her directing her people to destroy the evidence.

The matter went to trial, jury pciked and sworn. Earle told the judge he was going to introduce the evidence of the crime to the judge. Her attorney objected. The judge, being the good puke that he was threw that evidence out of court.

DEarle then told the court that he was not ready to go to trial without that evidence and walked out of the courtroom.

The judge, being the good puke he is dismissed the jury, had another panel brought in, swore them in, told them the matter before them was the State vs. Hutchison, and directed a verdict of NOT GUILTY.

    gREAT REPUBLICAN JUSTICE HEY APHRO?

  44. Spudge_Boy says:

“I DO think there is something wrong (note I didn’t say “illegal”) about sending $190K to the RNC and getting back $190K for congressional candidates.”

Yes, it is called money laudering.

  45. Ben says:

In a written statement Tuesday, Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle acknowledged that prosecutors presented their case to three grand juries — not just the two they had discussed — and one grand jury refused to indict DeLay. When questions arose about whether the state’s conspiracy statute applied to the first indictment returned last Wednesday, prosecutors presented a new money-laundering charge to second grand jury on Friday because the term of the initial grand jury had expired.

Working on its last day Friday, the second grand jury refused to indict DeLay. Normally, a “no-bill” document is available at the courthouse after such a decision. No such document was released Tuesday.

Earle’s statement on Tuesday said he took money-laundering and conspiracy charges to a third grand jury on Monday after prosecutors learned of new evidence over the weekend.

Lawyers for DeLay immediately called foul after Earle released his statement after 5 p.m. Tuesday.

“What could have happened over the weekend?” said Austin lawyer Bill White, who represents DeLay. “They investigate for three years and suddenly they have new evidence? That’s beyond the pale!”

White suggested that Earle released his statement Tuesday because he feared reporters would learn about the no-bill.

In his statement, Earle said he would have no further comment because grand jury proceedings are secret.

Yep, that Earle guy is a real honest person. Why don’t we all be honest and acknowledge that the system is corrupt. Both sides use deception and loop holes to compete against the other doing the same.

That’s what is sad today. Ignore the dishonesty of your agenda but persecute the dishonesty of the opposition.

  46. Terrytheturtle says:

Pablo, can you link to your source? Need to strap on a little ‘anti talking point armor’ in the break room here.

  47. Hunter Morrow says:

Keep talking. I’ve heard the saying before and I’ve heard it here, too: The guilty scream first, loudest, and longest. Man, he’s such a greedy prick he’s grabbing the rope and hanging himself with it. This is more than just Delay. Abramoff, Delay, and Co. are going to rat on a lot of operatives, high and low. This should be big enough to taint the Republican party for years.

  48. tigrismus says:

Ben: apparently, that’s not exactly true: a no-bill was issued, and copies have been handed out. New evidence was brought before the third grand jury.

  49. Ben says:

tigrismus: Are you comfortable with the integrity of a prosecuter that brings forth new evidence and new charges on the final day of the grand jury’s regular term? I’m not. Seems like politics as usual to me. Personally, Delay seems like a person that works the system. Like I said the system is corrupt. Term limits is a great first step to reducing it. Also look at the corruption that goes on with union dues in direct violation of the law and no one says a thing.

  50. tigrismus says:

If he obtains new evidence, why should he not bring it forth? For example, Margaret Thatcher was just questioned in the Abramoff probe, and DeLay was a topic of conversation. Should any information found before the close have been off limits just because it wasn’t obtained a little earlier? No, I have no problem with bringing any evidence for as long as the grand jury is in session, even on the last day; it is neither illegal nor unethical.

  51. mighty aphrodite says:

Sixpack, I told that little primper Delay to quit using the same greasy pommade you use – God, I wish he’d listen to me.

#29 – Don’t flatter yourself, PP – your arguments aren’t cogent or concise. Some trolls argue for a living – this site is merely a “sport” for us. We have no desire to change your minds – you would be of no use to us.
You might want to start winning elections – I have a suggestion how you anti-war, Bush bashers might convince the great unwashed that they should vote for all of your progressive candidates. Let them know that the Revolutionary Communist Party is a strong backer of “Not in Our Name” and members of that group are signatories on the worldcantwait scam. No surprise there – but we know how progressives love honesty and transparency!!

Pablo – You’re right, Republican justice is no where near as fair and equitable as Mexican justice. Be careful down there, gringo.

FEMA CONCENTRATION CAMPS: Locations and Executive Orders
    http://www.sianews.com/modules.p…e&sid=1062

There over 800 prison camps in the United States, all fully operational and ready to receive prisoners. They are all staffed and even surrounded by full-time guards, but they are all empty. These camps are to be operated by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) should Martial Law need to be implemented in the United States and all it would take is a presidential signature on a proclamation and the attorney general’s signature on a warrant to which a list of names is attached. Ask yourself if you really want to be on Ashcroft’s list.
The Rex 84 Program was established on the reasoning that if a “mass exodus” of illegal aliens crossed the Mexican/US border, they would be quickly rounded up and detained in detention centers by FEMA. Rex 84 allowed many military bases to be closed down and to be turned into prisons.

Operation Cable Splicer and Garden Plot are the two sub programs which will be implemented once the Rex 84 program is initiated for its proper purpose. Garden Plot is the program to control the population. Cable Splicer is the program for an orderly takeover of the state and local governments by the federal government. FEMA is the executive arm of the coming police state and thus will head up all operations. The Presidential Executive Orders already listed on the Federal Register also are part of the legal framework for this operation.

The camps all have railroad facilities as well as roads leading to and from the detention facilities. Many also have an airport nearby. The majority of the camps can house a population of 20,000 prisoners. Currently, the largest of these facilities is just outside of Fairbanks, Alaska. The Alaskan facility is a massive mental health facility and can hold approximately 2 million people.

Now let’s review the justification for any actions taken…

Executive Orders associated with FEMA that would suspend the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. These Executive Orders have been on record for nearly 30 years and could be enacted by the stroke of a Presidential pen:…

    EXECUTIVE ORDER 10990

allows the government to take over all modes of transportation and control of highways and seaports.

    EXECUTIVE ORDER 10995

allows the government to seize and control the communication media.

    EXECUTIVE ORDER 10997

allows the government to take over all electrical power, gas, petroleum, fuels and minerals.

    EXECUTIVE ORDER 10998

allows the government to seize all means of transportation, including personal cars, trucks or vehicles of any kind and total control over all highways, seaports, and waterways.

    EXECUTIVE ORDER 10999

allows the government to take over all food resources and farms.

    EXECUTIVE ORDER 11000

allows the government to mobilize civilians into work brigades under government supervision.

    EXECUTIVE ORDER 11001

allows the government to take over all health, education and welfare functions.

    EXECUTIVE ORDER 11002

designates the Postmaster General to operate a national registration of all persons. i know for a fact they doing this right NOW! im a victim of it! they block my po box now without even giving a reason why!

EXECUTIVE ORDER 11003 allows the government to take over all airports and aircraft, including commercial aircraft.

EXECUTIVE ORDER 11004 allows the Housing and Finance Authority to relocate communities, build new housing with public funds, designate areas to be abandoned, and establish new locations for populations.

    EXECUTIVE ORDER 11005

allows the government to take over railroads, inland waterways and public storage facilities.

    EXECUTIVE ORDER 11051

specifies the responsibility of the Office of Emergency Planning and gives authorization to put all Executive Orders into effect in times of increased international tensions and economic or financial crisis.

    EXECUTIVE ORDER 11310

grants authority to the Department of Justice to enforce the plans set out in Executive Orders, to institute industrial support, to establish judicial and legislative liaison, to control all aliens, to operate penal and correctional institutions, and to advise and assist the President.

    EXECUTIVE ORDER 11049

assigns emergency preparedness function to federal departments and agencies, consolidating 21 operative Executive Orders issued over a fifteen year period.

    EXECUTIVE ORDER 11921

allows the Federal Emergency Preparedness Agency to develop plans to establish control over the mechanisms of production and distribution, of energy sources, wages, salaries, credit and the flow of money in U.S. financial institution in any undefined national emergency. It also provides that when a state of emergency is declared by the President, Congress cannot review the action for six months. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has broad powers in every aspect of the nation. General Frank Salzedo, chief of FEMA’s Civil Security Division stated in a 1983 conference that he saw FEMA’s role as a “new frontier in the protection of individual and governmental leaders from assassination, and of civil and military installations from sabotage and/or attack, as well as prevention of dissident groups from gaining access to U.S. opinion, or a global audience in times of crisis.” FEMA’s powers were consolidated by President Carter to incorporate the…
