While I am not happy with Bush’s pick, I will certainly not cede the process to you lunatics. At a minumum, it appears Dingy Harry Reid stepped in it by praising Miers too soon. She’s probably anti-Roe and I enjoy watchign the left scream about it.

But for the record, Reid did more than praise Miers. He actually suggested her name to the administration, which (weakened by its recent crises) happily acquiesced.

They’ll have to work hard to convince hardcore conservatives on the Judiciary committee that thought Roberts wasn’t “conservative enough.” So in proving Miers’ “conservative creditials” they’ll make it harder for any Democrats to vote for her. Roberts was made to look like a moderate, so Harriet has to look like a true conservative.

As for the end of roe v. wade, I think it would politically powerful for democrats for this to happen. Frankly democrats have been so successful and so effective over the last 60 years of transforming america into the economic and socially conscious powerhouse that it is, it would be good for all of the people who enjoy this to remember the dangers of complacency… It will do more to solidify voters around the democratic base than any campaigning democrats could do. The reichwingers are idiots, they don’t even realize what effect their little ‘game’ will have…

We want a qualified conservative with a track record like Janice Rogers Brown or Samuel Alito. Pointing to Miers evangelical credentials to assure the base is cynical and disgusting.
Liberals have created an environment where admitted pro-lifers are automatically disqualified from the bench. Conservatives are giving in by using this shameful back door approach. I prefer we debate it, vote and let the chips fall where they may.
But liberals should find no comfort in this process. Miers is probably anti-Roe and Bush will likely replace Ginsburg next Spring with another anti-Roe justice. John Roberts grilled the pro-death crowd today on the bench. This is it folks – you’re losing the Courts. I just can’t say I’m proud of the way it’s being done.

Democrats are not one hundred percent for abortion. Also, the real reason the pick upsets me is that its obviously a crony pick. And unlike Gonzales this person doesn’t know jack about constitutional law and has no experience as a judge. She is largely unqualified and is just getting the post because of loyalty. Also, the fact that she is a potential stealth theocrat who is completely in love with Bush doesn’t help, either.
My concern is how bush/rove/cheney seems to have to call dobson ,robertson,land and other megapreachers who call themselves ministers of the gospels to get their OK’s this should be a concern to every American christian,non christian alike.What only are they Americans and the rest Chopped Liver? Perhaps on both counts. Ginsburg is indeed set for retirement, but it’s by no means certain. The same can be said for Miers. As has been pointed out several places today, Reagan sold Sandra Day O’Connor as being “personally opposed to abortion”, which didn’t exactly pan out, either.
I suppose time will tell, assuming Miers gets through. The bottom line is that these things are very hard to predict without a track record–something we were saying about Roberts. Welcome to our world :)

So you’d rather the pick be someone more elite and understands constitutional law? If thats the case, then why are Ginsberg, Kennedy and Souter so eager to look to foreign examples on how to rule. I would much rather have someone that actually interprets the constitution than someone who wants to legislate their liberalism for the rest of us from the bench. Just for the record, I think that Brown or Owens would have been much better choices.

Actually that’s what the Death Penalty gives the government the right to do. And so far we know of 2 dozen people who have wrongfully been killed by our government!

A fetus only becomes a human being when it is born, and can survive on its own, until then it is an embryo of cells that aren’t developed into a Human Being. A Human being has higher brain functions – and that’s what separates us from that chicken (actually a chicken has higher brain functions than a Fetus does, but that’s a different scientific point).
